Director’s Note Henrik Ibsen wrote An Enemy of the People in 1882. Yet it seems as if it was written just yesterday. The timeliness of this 140-year-old play is astounding. The battles of science vs. opinion, truth vs. economic stability, and individual conviction vs. public will, have been battles for time immemorial. The winners change with the times. Overarching themes aside, this play is the story of a family. How do these political battles affect individual citizens living their day-to-day lives? The interplay between various groups—scientists, media, politicians, the public at large— dictates how we live on a daily basis and influences what we dream for the future. In the end, this play begs the question: Who really is the enemy of the people?

Director’s Note Fairy Tales come to us from all over the world, beautifully universal with their messages. They may continually evolve to fit new times and cultures, but the stories they tell, no matter from where they come, are the same. Whether they be cautionary or inspiring, humorous or serious, they can originate anywhere and be easily finished somewhere else. Beautifully universal. Because The Sandman has its origins in Denmark, we strove to infuse the play with some Danish sensibilities and language. We hear this mostly from Henry’s Mormor (Grandmother,) phrases we often associate with grandmothers in general: “Silly child,” “Dear one,” “My boy.” Like in all Fairy Tales, the language may change, but the feelings and the messages stay the same. So beautifully universal. The Sandman is our Fairy Tale bridge across cultures, as well as between time and space. We witness in Henry’s dreams his own world-building, while his imagination takes hold and creates community. All children learn, grow, love, build; all children dream. Whether your community is in Denmark, Africa, or Santa Clarita, it is full of people creating and building and caring together, connecting cultures and stories and beautifully universal messages. Thank you for being a part of our community here at the theatre. Cast Henry...........................................................................
