On Demand Book Printing Solution

Choice for books to remain Books have been with us for hundreds of years and part of their enduring success is a result of a constant evolution. Since Gutenberg produced his first bibles, books have survived many threats to their existence. People love books. They feel relaxed and at ease with their familiarity, their texture and their continuity - and have no concerns about compatibility. However, with the exponential growth of the internet; the introduction of tablets such as the Kindle and iPad and even the ubiquitous smart phone, the printed book is arguably under more pressure today than ever before. For books to remain an integral part of our lives as a form of entertainment, education or information distribution, they need to continue to evolve as they have for the last five hundred years. That evolution has always gone hand in hand with technological change and it is no different today. For the last 70 years, Screen has been at the heart of that technological evolution – from cameras to scanners, the first page make-up systems to desktop publishing and filmsetters to computer to plate, Screen has developed many of the technologies that have changed the face of book production. Screen continues to be a pioneer of technology that allows the publishing industry to revolutionize its business model. We are the only company to have developed computer-to-plate devices to match the new super-sized web presses that allow printers to optimize traditional litho production and our market leading development of inkjet web presses have significantly reduced the cost of short-run production in acceptable high quality. Our new sheet-fed inkjet press, Truepress JetSX, is the first digital press that has a format that is big enough for both dust jackets and paperbacks with flaps and our innovative workflow software called EQUIOS makes imposition, color management and output instructions completely automated processes.

Not every title printed can be a best seller therefore publishers have always suffered from large stocks, just in case a book sells, and returns when it does not. With the aid of Screen’s universal workflow and digital printing technology, we can offer marketing departments the opportunity to print long-tail titles on demand, rather than keep books in stock as well as the opportunity to trial market new talents before committing to volume production. This can be done regardless of paper volume and whether the book is monochrome or color. Screen has been working hard to provide solutions to publishers and printers for many years and today those solutions can be more flexible, more profitable and more environmentally friendly than ever before.

EQUIOS: Universal Workflow

EQUIOS drives litho and digital production Screen’s new prepress and production workflow software is called EQUIOS and for the first time a single set of workflow tools can be used to automate the processing of files to drive both conventional litho production as well as a full range of sheet-fed and continuous digital presses. This means that last minute decision can be made about where a book is printed and the same staff can control production whether you need to produce one copy or one million and one.

Truepress Jet520 series: Roll fed high-speed full-color variable printing system

Setting new standards for digital production The Truepress Jet520 series enables color and B/W titles to be produced on demand. Digital printing was introduced to book (mono) printing in the early 1990s and the value of short-run production was gradually recognized by publishers as a way of increasing profitability through reduced capital committed to warehouses full of unsold books. It also enabled small quantities of slower selling titles to be produced as they were required so no title ever had to be out of stock. As digital technology developed, so did publishing concepts that took advantage of the opportunity to produce customized projects using repurposed data for different market sectors. These projects were initially restricted to monochrome books but the more recent introduction of high speed inkjet presses has led to an extension of this publishing opportunity to color books. Screen launched the first color capable continuous feed inkjet press in 2006 and it now offers a range of machines to cover all production demands in both black and white and color. The Truepress Jet520 now has the reputation as the most reliable high speed roll-fed inkjet press on the market and we can confidently claim a marketing leading position that we are determined to maintain.

Lineup

The Truepress Jet520, the standard model for the Truepress Jet520 series, combines an outstanding full color on-demand variable concept with exceptional stability and high quality and productivity. Since it was launched in 2007, it has gained the support of a large number of customers.

The most recent addition to our inkjet portfolio is the Truepress Jet520ZZ, our flagship machine capable of outputting more than 6,000 pages per minute – approximately 1,500 books per hour (256 pages, B format: 130 x 198mm)*. *Output by 3up(Trifold binding) with a dual engine duplex system and 220 m/min output speed.

While the majority of the installed base of Truepress Jet520’s is used for printing color pages, we recently introduced the Truepress Jet520EX, a dedicated black and white machine based on the same technology. With a service model based on no click charges, the Truepress Jet520EX is a very cost-effective solution for black and white printing.

Truepress JetSX: B2 sheet-fed full-color variable printing system

Jackets and covers The Truepress JetSX is the world’s first B2 inkjet press, the format makes it ideal for printing jackets and covers. One of the early limitations of digital book production was that the color capabilities of the available presses were not high enough for commercial products. In addition, the A3 format did not permit jackets or covers with flaps to be produced. Digital presses have now improved to the point where print quality is not an issue although the A3 limitation remained. However, Screen’s B2 sheet-fed inkjet press removes this limitation by giving you a print area of 720mm x 540mm – plenty big enough for almost all jackets and covers to be produced. Most jackets and covers need subsequent finishing such as lamination, varnishes and blocking. Screen’s introduction of the industry standard B2 format means that all of your existing finishing equipment can still be used. The Truepress JetSX is based on the latest inkjet technology and its revolutionary approach means that we can print in photo-quality on offset coated paper and boards. With the ability to print up to 0.6 mm (23.6mil)**, even the heaviest cover materials can be handled. **0.6 mm (23.6mil) in simplex, 0.4 mm (15.7mil) for duplex printing

PlateRite series: Thermal plate recorder

Computer to plate litho production Desktop publishing and computer to plate means every recipe in your favorite cookery book is now printed in color. For many industry experts computer to plate (CTP) marked the biggest single transformation in print production. Today’s inkjet presses may seriously challenge that view but nonetheless, the disappearance of thousands of film planners and print down frames changed printing dramatically. Screen has long been the market leader in CTP and this is a position it maintains. Screen’s CTP quality is assured with consistent imaging ability with accurate inline punching and auto-balancing drum system, supported by its optics and graphic technology cultivated in scanners and other prepress equipments. Screen can supply devices that are capable of outputting plates for every press size from B2 up to the new super-size 48 page web offset presses, or from entry model to the world top level productivity. Furthermore, for your future business, field upgrade options can be added after installation. With this comprehensive lineup, we are sure we can meet your most demanding requirements.

Communication with toner printers EQUIOS can be used as your output centre for all your printing devices. Not only can it drive Screen’s different products but it can also communicate with toner-based POD presses. EQUIOS enhances two-way communication by obtaining and managing paper information, transmitting instructions to printers, and acquiring information on printing progress and results. It further facilitates the handling of small-lot orders. By feeding back information to the MIS, EQUIOS also makes possible a more integrated production management system.

Fully integrated production Book production has become increasingly automated over recent years as printers have strived to reduce the labor cost of manufacturing. This is particularly true for digital production where small volumes would be uneconomic if manual stages could not be eliminated. Screen has launched its EQUIOSNET partnership program as a way of facilitating the easy integration of many different production processes. Integration is based on the industry standard JDF/JMF protocols and this means that EQUIOS can communicate with a huge variety of prepress, printing and finishing devices.
