From the Editor Happy third birthday Southdown Journal & Directory! It has been another great year for Southdowns. Just take a look at the cover and you can see the future of our industry is strong with the youth involved in our breed.

You might notice this issue of the Journal is a little different than the last two. We heard your feedback. Members asked for more articles and fewer forms. Thank you to all those that submitted ideas, content and photos. I would also like to especially thank our advertisers because our advertising revenue is what allows us to send this valuable publication out to all the members.

I hope you have a chance to read the articles in this publication. We aim to create content for those that are just starting out in Southdowns and for those that have had Southdowns for a number of years.

President’’s Message

Whether print or electronic media, one can’t help but see articles about risk management concerning financial markets, information technology, legal liabilities, natural disasters, and health care. The USDA has created a Risk Management Agency that has been very visible to the farm sector through crop insurance and livestock programs after the impact of last year’s widespread drought conditions.

In the Southdown business, as in any other business, we would like to control the probability or impact of unfortunate events in order to maximize income and minimize physical and financial stress. Many of us will now take measures to try rotational grazing methods, stock pile and use alternative feed sources, insulate water lines, and improve barns to help manage the risks of drought and severe winter weather, both fresh in our memories from this past year.

The ASBA has been leading the way among sheep organizations in providing means to manage risk for breeders and minimize risk to buyers. The major sheep sales now have DNA disclosure requirements which began with the ASBA Hereditary Chondrodysplasia(HC) Sale Warranty adopted in 1999. Then in 2006 we were the first breed to require QR or RR with respect to scrapie susceptibility( codon 171). By careful use of DNA testing, Southdown flocks have been able to minimize the occurrence of lambs deformed by HC ( “spider” syndrome), reduce the risk of government flock quarantine or condemnation from scrapie and have the additional benefit of using results for marketing breeding stock.

Through the research efforts of Dr. Jonathan Beever and the University of Illinois and the diligence of the ASBA genetic research committee, as a breed we are now able to manage another risk of financial loss from a genetic defect, Ectodermal Dysplasia (ED), more commonly referred to as “hairy lamb”, a terminology used based on physical appearance until the genetic cause was determined.

ED is a simple recessive genetic defect that affects the development of the ectodermal layer in an embryo. This is the layer associated with development of skin, hair, teeth and nails, which is why in ED affected lambs the abnormalities can include parrot mouths, abnormal teeth, fine white hair instead of crimped wool and very thin skin making them subject to stress, most dying within a few days of birth.

You will read in this issue of the Southdown Journal & Directory minutes of the Nov. 10, 2012 meeting of the ASBA board of directors.

It includes action on a policy for ED (like that for HC) that will go into effect for ASBA sanctioned sales this fall beginning with the 2013 Stars of Louisville Sale and for shows beginning in 2014 and thereafter. Dr. Beever has projected that the ED test will be licensed to commercial labs in April, 2013. Until that commercial transfer of testing responsibility happens, samples are still being processed and tested at the University of Illinois. Please check the ASBA website for any changes in testing availability in the near future. Once licensed, we will post which commercial labs are approved by Dr. Beever and the ASBA for testing.

Breeders can choose to manage ED risk in their breeding programs much the same way as they do for HC: 1. Do nothing and have increased risk of deformed lambs, resulting in fewer lambs to reach market weight and thus loss of income.

2. Use only EDF (Ectodermal Dysplasia Free) homozygous rams. This would compare to using NN rams, which results in all normal appearing offspring, but will not eliminate the risk of carriers of the defect in the breeding flock and replacements.

3. Use EDF rams and test a portion of the ewe flock, making progress towards EDF status, similar to what breeders with careful record keeping have done with codon 171 tests, using matings that increase occurrence of the “R” gene in order to decrease scrapie susceptibility.

4. Most costly in the short term, both in dollars and in loss of quality genetics, would be to test everything and eliminate all heterozygous individuals.

Let’s take advantage of the available DNA testing technology to reduce genetic defect risk and loss exposure for our customers when planning breeding programs and selecting consignments for sales. In the cattle industry, the Angus breed has developed testing for nearly a dozen genetic defects yet Angus cattle are more popular and in demand than ever. They have provided the tools to minimize risk, which in turn creates more value in pedigrees and offspring produced. We can benefit from following their lead and continue to set a high standard among purebred sheep in the industry.

Secretary’’ ’ s Column My oh my, how times change! With today’s social media, facebook, twitter, emails, websites, on line sales, and much more, how things are changing each year. All of these changes affect the American Southdown Breeders’ Association and many of its members.

Our Board of Directors is currently looking at the best way to serve the membership and to do so in a timely, professional manner. This year will bring the first year that juniors can buy futurity lambs through one of the on line sales along with consignment sales.

We hope this will allow for more participation of juniors nationwide. The futurity program is tried and true and with slight adjustments will continue to be a great way for youth to be able to purchase high quality lambs to show and then put into their flock.

However, with all the instant messaging, on line sales, and hustle and bustle of getting those papers needed for shows and sales, none of these are the real heart and soul of the sheep business and this Association.

For there is nothing like seeing that set of newborn twins nursing a ewe for the first time, or admiring the new lamb crop at the end of the lambing season.

There is nothing like the handshake of an old friend and fellow shepherd you haven’t seen over the winter, or the handshake of anticipation of a youth looking at Southdowns for the first time. Some good things just never change!

National and Regional Southdown Junior Shows

The National Junior Southdown Show will be held in conjunction with the 2013 All-American Junior Show (AAJS). The AAJS will be at the Michigan State University Pavilion in East Lansing, MI from July 4-7, 2013. Judges for this year’s event will be: Dave Clouser, Ohio; F.D. McCarthy, Ohio; and Matt Scramlin, Michigan. The Southdown judge was not announced at time of print, but it will either be Clouser or McCarthy.

If you have never attended an AAJS make plans to attend this very special event! It is much more than just a sheep show, with several activities for the whole family. The show features a lamb camp for the young sheep owners, a 3-on-3 basketball tourney for exhibitors, a sheep skill-a-thon competition, a sheep judging contest, a team showmanship competition and wool show for all breeds. The promotional contests for exhibitors once again feature a PowerPoint presentation category and an adult photography category, a college scholarship program for older exhibitors, and much more! And the fun doesn’t stop there.

This year will feature fun for the whole family including a pool and pizza party on Thursday night, the famous apple and cherry pie social on Friday, breakfast served up on Saturday and Sunday, and dinner on Saturday night including brats and lamb burger. The 2013 California State Fair will host the Western Regional Southdown Show. The junior sheep show is July 15, 2012. Entries are due June 7. The junior show is open to youth age 9 to 18 years old as of January 1. The California State Fair hosts hundreds of contests and competitions each year that are fun for the whole family. The Wisconsin Southdown Association will again host the Midwest Regional Southdown Junior Show, which will be held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival Junior Show on Sunday, September 8, 2013, at the Jefferson County Fair in Jefferson, Wisconsin.

Entry details can be found on the Sheep and Wool Festival website or the Wisconsin Southdown Association website (www.wisconsinsouthdowns.com) two months before the show. The junior show is open to all youth 19 years old and younger as of January 1. The youth events feature a skill-a-ton by Sam and Pat Wiford, judging contests, poster contest, photo completion, lead class, open and junior market lamb shows and jackpot and much more! Preventing Overeating Disease in Lambs

Overeating Disease in sheep is actually a misnomer. The disease is more accurately termed enterotoxemia. This disease is caused by the bacteria Clostridium perfringens. There are actually 6 types of this bacteria (A,B,C,D,E, & F), however only types B, C, & D are significant in sheep and lambs.

The infection of enterotoxemia caused by CL. perfringens types B & C causes severe enteritis, dysentery, toxemia and high mortality in young lambs. Type C also causes the disease in adult sheep. Usually, lamb dysentery is seen in young animals under 3 weeks of age. The proper prevention of enterotoxemia is caused by Type C vaccination of the pregnant dam. Vaccination is recommended in the last third of gestation, with a booster about 4 weeks after the first injection.

Clinical signs of acute lamb dysentery caused by Cl perfringens Type C include lambs that stop nursing, become listless, produce blood tinged diarrhea, and die within a few days. Many times, the lamb dies prior to exhibiting clinical signs of the disease. Treatment is usually ineffective and the best course is prevention by vaccination of the pregnant dam.

Enterotoxemia caused by Cl perfringens Type D is found frequently in lambs and less likely in goats. This is the disease most commonly referred to as “Overeating”. This disease usually affects young lambs under 2 weeks of age, or the weaned lambs that are consuming a high-carbohydrate diet (grain). However, lambs grazing lush pastures are also susceptible. There are few signs of the disease apart from “sudden death syndrome”. The term “Overeating” was given to this disease because it usually affected the larger lambs consuming grain diets, and without notice of signs, the lambs were usually healthy one day and found deceased the next.

Treatment is usually ineffective. Vaccination of pregnant dams and lambs is recommended. Lambs nursing ewes that have been vaccinated receive immunity through the ewe’s milk. Most sheep are found to have at least some population of Cl. perfringens in their digestive tract. When lambs begin consuming large amounts of carbohydrates (milk or grain) the bacteria flourish producing a waste product that is toxic. The toxin affects the central nervous system. Usually, the bacteria proliferate causing the toxin to be released in a short period. This causes the unvaccinated lamb to succumb to the disease in a short period of time, usually without clinical signs.

The recommended vaccination schedule is to initially immunize pregnant ewes in the last trimester of gestation with a booster about 4 weeks later, and subsequent annual vaccinations. For young lambs, usually their immune system is not fully developed to allow the full effect of vaccination prior to 4 weeks of age. So, it is suggested that young nursing lambs be vaccinated with Cl. perfringens Types C & D at 4 weeks of age and again 2 to 4 weeks later.

An annual vaccination is recommended to prevent occurrence of the disease in the adult animal.

It is also suggested that young lambs be vaccinated for Tetanus (Clostridium tetani) at the same time as vaccinated for enterotoxemia. This can be accomplished by using a toxiod vaccine that includes Cl. perfringens Types C & D, and Cl. tetani (CD/T vaccine). Also, it is important to note the difference between toxoid vaccine and antitoxin. The Cl. perfringens Types C & D antitoxin provides protection almost immediately but gradually becomes ineffective in about 2 weeks. In contrast, the toxoid vaccine typically builds immunity in a 2 week period, and that immunity persists for about a year when given a booster 2-4 weeks after the initial vaccination.

When lambs are born to unvaccinated ewes, and the organism is present, it is advised that the lambs be treated first with antitoxin and then subsequently vaccinated with the toxoid vaccine for maximum protection.

When purchasing lambs from a breeder or through a club lamb sale, it is a very good idea to ask the breeder if the lambs have been vaccinated. If that answer is no, the new owner should vaccinate the lambs immediately, and then again in about 2 weeks.

Feeding the Ewe Flock By: Larry Mrozinski

Feed costs comprise the single largest expense of sheep production. Correct nutrition of the ewe flock is one of the most important aspects of profitable sheep management. Profit is quite dependent on the nutrition program for the ewe flock. Factors affecting the nutritional program of the ewe flock includes: 1. Production stage 2. Production level 3. Body size 4. Body condition 5. Age 6. Time and frequency of lambing 7. Environment 8. Feeds available 9. Disease

Roughage is usually one of the cheapest feed for the ewe flock. Roughage varies drastically in nutrient value.

With the use of forage analysis, the nutrient content and quality of roughage can be determined. Comparison of the different feeds available and their nutrient composition must be analyzed to determine the most cost-effective feed that meets the ewes’ requirements.

Forages include pasture, dry hay and silage. The pounds of forage fed per ewe per day needs to include consideration of the dry matter of the feed. The pounds of dry matter that the ewe will consume is a better method of calculating intake since silage contains much more water than does hay. Low dry matter feeds requires the ewe to consume more pounds of feed in order to receive the same level of nutrients from hay or a dry forage. Corn silage is a desirable feed for ewes and can be fortified to become even a better feed. The following can be added to each ton of corn silage at time of ensiling to improve its nutrient content: 10 pounds of urea, 6 THE AMERICAN SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL & DIRECTORY 2013

10 pounds of limestone, 5 pounds of potassium sulfate/ magnesium sulfate, and 5 pounds of dicalcium phosphate. Be careful in the mixing of the aforementioned ingredients to assure even distribution.

It is essential that a good quality mineral/salt product that is specially formulated for sheep be used yearround. The content of this mineral product should not contain added copper. Mineral nutrition is a continuous program and should be made available to the sheep each day of the year.

During specific times of the year, forage or roughage alone will not meet the energy needs of the ewe. Energy is usually most cost-effective added to a sheep ration in the form of grain. Corn has traditionally been the most effective for price per unit of energy. The use of whole, shelled corn in ewe’s diets works well. Be sure to slowly introduce corn to the ewes’ diet to prevent acidosis.

Breeding Increasing the energy intake of a ewe two to four weeks before breeding and during the breeding season has increased lambing percentage. Results from flushing are greater with thin ewes than fat ewes. Increasing diet energy is usually accomplished most cost-effectively by adding grain to the ewe’s ration. In the Midwest for average sized ewes, typical flushing program is to place ewes on good quality pasture or forage and add ½ to 1 pound of corn per ewe per day. The great chance of embryo loss and thus lower lambing percentage is during the first 25 days post-conception. During this time, the level of nutrition and management must be adequate to not stress ewes possibly causing embryo loss.

Gestation After the 25 day period after conception and during the first 3 to 3 ½ months of gestation, ewes can be placed on a maintenance ration with satisfactory results.

Additional nutrient intake by the ewe becomes more critical during the last 1 ½ months of gestation. During this time, fetuses grow about 60 percent of their birth weight, thus placing a tremendous nutritional strain on the ewe. Ewes should slowly increase their nutrient intake so as to be consuming their lactation diet at lambing time. Also during this time, the weather may be cold, ewes may be sheared and many ewes are probably carrying multiple fetuses. Additional energy, above that received from a maintenance diet, must be fed to the

Feeding the Ewe Flock Cont. ewes the last 6 weeks of gestation. If adequate energy is not supplied to the ewe during late gestation, ketosis can occur. In general, even if the ewes are fat, additional energy besides the forage, must be fed to the ewes.

Depending on the size of the ewe and the expected number of fetuses, corn should be slowly introduced into the ewe’s diet so that ewes are consuming 1 to 2 pounds of corn at lambing time. The quality of forage should be also increased prior to lambing, with at least a 16 percent protein forage comprising the ration. If good quality forages are not available, supplementation with soybean meal can be done in an economical manner. Bulky, wet diets for late gestation ewes carrying multiple fetuses should be avoided. The energy density of the late gestation ration should be increased as the ewe has less digestive area due to the growing fetuses.

A high quality diet with good consumption by the ewe is important during late gestation.

Lactation Lactation requires proper nutrition if the maximal milk production and growth rate of the lambs is to be realized. The protein and energy of the diet must be higher during lactation than any other time of the production year. Average sized ewes nursing twins require about 1 pound of protein and 5 pounds of total digestible nutrients (TDN) per day.

Medium size ewes, during maintenance, only need 3 to 4 pounds of medium quality hay or pasture per day or approximately .40 pounds of protein and 2 pounds of TDN to meet their requirements. Restricted grazing of pastures can help prevent overly fat ewes during the summer months.

Restricted grazing is simply allowing the ewes to graze only for a specific time length. By doing this, ewes are maintained in proper condition and additional ewes can be carried on the pasture.

Replacement ewe lambs Proper nutrition of replacement ewe lambs is important for maximum life-time production. Due to vast difference in body sizes and types, one should pay close attention to the condition of the ewe lambs. They must be fed for growth and not fattening. Fat ewe lambs tend to have problems at lambing time while under-fed lambs never reach their full potential. Average sized ewe lambs should be maintained on a ration with at least .65 pounds of protein and 2.5 pounds of TDN. Pregnant and lactating ewe lambs must be fed at a higher level than mature ewes. A rule of thumb is that a ewe lamb needs about 1/3 more feed than the corresponding mature ewe.

Milk production in the ewe peaks at 35 to 42 days of lactation. Weaning at 60 days is a common practice.

Weaning the ewe properly helps to reduce the incidence of mastitis. Research done by the author show that the number of mastitis cases in ewes at weaning were reduced when the following was done: 1.

One week before weaning – remove grain from ewe’s diet and feed poor quality hay.

At weaning – remove all feed (grain and hay) and water for 48 hours past weaning.

After 48 hours – place ewes on low quality hay only.

Do not place on lush pasture until10 to 14 after weaning.

Maintenance Feeding ewes correctly during the non-productive part of the year can save producers many dollars. Ewes that are not pregnant of lactating have greatly reduced nutrient requirements when compared to the requirements of gestation and lactation. Keeping the ewes in a “healthy thin” condition during this time saves money

Miscellaneous feeding suggestions Coccidiosis is becoming a more prevalent problem in sheep operation as production levels increase. Feeding the ewe, during late gestation or lactation, a grain mix containing a coccidiostat has been show to decrease the level of coccidiosis in baby lambs. Informal Meeting Notes

The informal Board meeting of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association was held November 10th 2012, at 4:00 p.m. in the South Wing Board Room of the North American International Livestock Exposition, Louisville, Kentucky.

Those directors present included: L. C. Scramlin, Barbara Bishop, Darrell Howard, Scott Flanagan, Lee Pettey, Kyle Thayer, Jeff Repasky, Mark Johnson, Amy Powell, and Brian Forsee. There were also a number of interested Association members present.

A motion was made by Jeff Repasky to accept the minutes of the previous meeting as corrected by the Executive Secretary, seconded by Lee Pettey. The motion passed.

The Executive Secretary then gave an overview of the financial status of the Association for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2012. The Association cash balance as of October 1, 2011 was $153,009.33. With operating expenses of $89,285.19 and operating income of $86,014.12, the ending cash balance for the Association was $149,738.26. President Scramlin then called for committee reports under old business.

Mark Johnson of the nomination committee gave his committees recommendations for the different shows and sales in the coming year. The recommendations for a judge of the 2013 National Southdown Sale were either Jeremy Etzler or Brad Ellerbrock.

Recommendations for the 2013 National Junior Show to be held with the All- American show were Travis Hoffman, Bart Cardwell, Chris Spilde, Farabee McCarthy, Jamie Rincker, or Matt Scramlin. The committee’s recommendations for judge of the 2013 National Show were either Stan Poe, Brad Angus, Jeremy Etzler, or Brad Ellerbrock.

Four directors whose terms expire in 2012, Darrell Howard, Marty Gibbs, Mark Johnson, and Dr. John Jones, have chosen not to seek reelection. Two directors, Jeff Repasky and Barbara Bishop have chosen to run again.

In the absence of the proxy committee chairman, the Executive Secretary noted that there were 43 valid proxies submitted and 7 invalid proxies for the annual meeting.

Dr. Scott Flanagan of the genetic research and development committee, reported on the success of Dr. Jonathan Beever in finding the answer to the problem of hairy lambs in the breed. He was hopeful that a commercial test would be available to breeders soon.

Meeting Notes Continued Brian Forsee, stated that an excellent average of $1,084.00 was posted at the Stars of Louisville Southdown Sale held earlier in the day. Twenty-four head of lambs were nominated for the yearling ewe futurity.

Darrell Howard reported that the National Sale was held this year with the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. A very nice set of sheep sold with an average of $846.00 on 141 head.

The “Ewes for Youth” committee saw 20 applicants this year, with three youth chosen to receive a ewe lamb. The ewe lamb can be taken back to the donor for breeding the next year. Those youth chosen are from Missouri, Ohio and Massachusetts.

Mike McElvain gave an update on the futurity program for this year. There were 17 yearling ewes, 14 fall ewe lambs, and 28 spring ewe lambs that reported points.

The total jackpot to be distributed this year will be $525 for yearling ewes, $750 for fall ewe lambs, and $3575 for the spring born ewe lambs.

Amy Jones commented on the success of the electronic communication and social media committee. Traffic on the facebook page continues to be strong with 719 “likes” and the membership page continues to grow each month. The website sees an average of 80 visitors each day. The top five most visited pages are breeders’ links, show and sale results, breed overview, classified ads, and forms.

Amy Powell of the youth development and education committee informed the Board that three scholarships of $600 each were given this year. They went to Jessica Deeter, Troy Longenecker, and Richard Burns.

Lisa Scramlin, editor of the Journal and Directory and the Louisville Preview, stated that she would be editing both issues next year. She had ideas for articles for next year’s issues along with evergreen content.

Barbara Bishop noted the policy and procedure committee would be doing an update this winter that will bring us to a current status on all of the actions of the Board of Directors.

Barbara Bishop then gave a proposal on the budget for the fiscal year 2012-2013.

Darrell Howard moved to accept the budget as presented. Second by Lee Pettey.

After discussion, Darrell Howard moved to table the motion at this time, seconded

by Brian Forsee. The motion to table at this time passed.

President Scramlin then called for any new business.

Brian Forsee moved to designate the 2013 National Show to be held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition, seconded by Mark Johnson. The motion passed.

It was moved by Lee Pettey to designate the California State Fair as a regional show in 2013, seconded by Kyle Thayer. The motion carried.

It was noted that the 2013 National Sale would be in conjunction with the Ohio Showcase Sale.

Also, the 2013 National Junior Show would be held with the All-American Show in East Lansing, Mi, at Michigan State University.

There was then discussion on the classes offered at the All-American show and the classes specified for our National Junior Show.

Brian Forsee moved to have the pair of ram lambs class at the All-American show along with the best four head of ewes, seconded by Mark Johnson. The motion passed.

Discussion then began on the hair lamb policy. It was moved by Lee Pettey to adapt the same policy for both shows and sales as with the spider policy, and this policy to go into effect January 1, 2013. It was seconded by Barbara Bishop.

After much discussion on the issue by the Board, it was voiced by Mark Johnson to separate the effective date for the show and sale policy. With the same policy and wording as the spider policy, it was amended to have an effective date of the sale policy of September 2, 2013 and the show policy of January 1, 2014.

The original motion with the amended dates was then voted on and passed by a show of hands ,7-2.

Online sales and futurity nominations were then discussed. It was voiced that the on line companies that host futurity sales must be bonded, they must include a form to fill out with the identification of each lamb, futurity funds be collected by the sale management company and the sale management company sign an agreement of such.

After discussion on the issues, it was moved by Brian Forsee that we agree to online sales with futurity nominations with the following terms: 1. The sale management company agree to the terms of the ASBA show and sale policy, 2. The sale management must be bonded, 3. The sale management collect the $25.00 nomination fee from the consignor and send to the Association office, 4. Nominations must be done at the time the sale is posted with the scrapie number included, 5. The sale management send to the Association office a print out of the sale with name of purchaser, seconded by Darrell Howard. The motion carried It was then moved by Mark Johnson to take the budget off the table, seconded by Jeff Repasky. The motion passed.

Brian Forsee moved the Board go into executive session, seconded by Scott Flanagan. The motion passed.

Upon returning to the Board meeting, it was moved by Darrell Howard to increase the performance line of the budget to $600.00, seconded by Brian Forsee. The motion passed.

Darrell Howard then moved to accept the budget as presented and adjusted, seconded by Jeff Repasky. The motion carried.

Brian Forsee voiced he would still like to see a youth director for the Association. We need to explore the possibility of such.

It was moved by Darrell Howard to amend the By-Laws so that a Board member will serve no more than 21 consecutive years or seven consecutive terms. The following motion will be presented to the membership for a vote at the 2013 annual meeting: This would be done by the following change to Article V: Directors and Officers 1.

There shall be sixteen directors chosen by the members of the Association at the Annual Meeting, who shall constitute the Board of Directors of the Association and who shall have power to manage the affairs of the Association, subject to the provisions of the Constitution and By-laws. The President or any Board member may request a Board of Directors meeting and conduct business. Nine of the Directors shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business and may be held either in person or by telephone. The Directors shall be elected from the membership, must be a member and manage, raise or own Southdown sheep. They shall serve for a term of three years, not to exceed 21 consecutive years, and shall be elected one from each of the twelve Districts hereinafter described and four Directors-at-large (two from each of the regions representing the largest number of registrations, not to exceed two Directors-at-large per Region.

A second was given by Mark Johnson. After discussion, a ballot vote was taken with the vote 5-4 in favor. The motion passed.

With no further business to conduct, a motion to adjourn was given by Darrell Howard with a second by Mark Johnson. The motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 7:46 p.m. southdownsheep.org 11

ASBA Ambassadors Finishing my senior year of high school has been very bitter sweet. Even though it has been so much fun, it has been full of instances that I find myself doing something for the last time. The last time I walked out onto the soccer field, the last time I attended an FFA District Contest, or the last time I opened a Rushville FFA meeting as Chapter President. None of these last times would have happened if I didn't have the courage and drive to push myself.

The National FFA theme this past year, Grow, has encouraged me to grow and persevere as an individual. I feel as if during my senior year in high school, I have learned more about myself as a person and who I want to be, than I have during any other time in my life. Throughout my senior year I have set goals for myself and those goals continue to grow today. Each day I try to learn something new in order to better myself. These goals that I have set for myself have influenced me to grow as an individual and continue to help develop my character into who I want to be.

Being a National Southdown Junior Association Ambassador has been another opportunity for me to meet others and help out this great organization. I think that the most important job qualifications of an ambassador is the willingness to lend a hand when needed and to help new junior members meet others. Being an ambassador has given me the opportunity to network with breeders from all over our great country. I have, and continue to, learn more about the Southdown industry and its impact on American agriculture. I strongly encourage any junior member who wishes to better themselves as individuals and help the National Jr. Southdown Association grow stronger to fill out an application. The memories you will make, and the people you will come in contact with, will be extraordinary. Scholarship Program Purpose The American Southdown Breeders’ Association offers scholarships to junior Southdown members to reward their work as Southdown breeders and to encourage participation in Southdown activities. The Scholarship is available to any American Southdown Breeders’ Association junior member who is pursuing an education after high school.

Scholarship Information The scholarship is $600.

Scholarship Requirements: • Applicants must be a junior member of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association.

• Applicants must be age 21 or under as of January 1.

• Applicants must be enrolled and in good standing at a college, university or technical school as of September 1, and must intend to enroll in classes at that school the next semester following

the application deadline.

• Junior members may re-apply for the scholarship if they meet the eligibility requirements for the application year.

• Applications will not be accepted from previous ASBA scholarship winners.

Scholarship Criteria • Southdown experiences and achievements 50% • Leadership and activities within ag-related organizations 30% • Essay 20% Application Process • Applicants must complete the Application Form which is also available on the ASBA website.

- Attach copy of most recent transcript. If first semester freshman, attach proof of

enrollment and high school transcript. Transcripts may also be sent electronically.

Pot O’;’’Gold Futurity Point Rules’’ Ewe Lamb, Fall Ewe Lamb and Yearling Ewe Futurity competitions are open to junior Southdown members who purchase futurity nominated ewes. Consigners must follow the policies for the sale and nomination process. Junior buyers must adhere to the exhibitor rules to be eligible for awards and premiums funded by the nomination fees.

Ewe lambs nominated at designated sales in the previous year plus ewe lambs purchased at the “Stars of Louisville” sale may compete as yearlings.

Southdown breeders are looking to the future. The Junior Southdown sheep project is the perfect combination of youth and livestock. We prove it by the investment breeders make in the future of our breed.

511.1 Futurity Sales: • Illini All Breeds Sale • Oklahoma Black and White Sale • Ohio Southdown Classic Sale • Keystone Stud Ram & Ewe Sale • National Cornbelt Sale • Midwest Stud Ram Sale • National Southdown Sale • New England Sale • Nugget All-American Sale • Wisconsin Stars Sale • Stars of Louisville Sale • Hoosier Heartland Sale • Yearling from sales that qualify under rule 511.41.

• Online Sales (if they meet the following conditions)

1. The Sale Management Company agrees to all terms of the ASBA show and sale policy.

2. The Sale Management Company is bonded.

3. The Sale Management Company collects the $25 nomination fee from the consigned and pay those

funds to the ASBA Office.

4. The nomination of the animal is indicated for the entire time the sale listing is on the internet indenti fied by the scrapie number.

5. The Sale Management Company sends to the ASBA office the print out of the sale with name and

address of the purchaser for the entire sale.

6. Only sales conducted by a management company qualify, if an individual breeder has an online sale, all

futurity nominations and sales must be handled by the sale management company. (November 2012 director meeting)

511.2 At consignment sales that show for sale order, nominations of futurity lambs must be made before their class exhibits. (Passed policy – summer 1993). Sales which do not show for sale order must record nominations at check in and identify those animals on the sale order. Online sales must note the nomination of futurity animals when the sale order is first posted on the web.

511.3 The purchasing junior cannot be an immediate family member of the breeder or employee of the breeder as listed on the ewe s registration paper. Immediate family members would be described as any first generation child, grandchild, sister, brother, niece, or nephew. (Passed policy- informal meeting 2005).

511.4 Yearling ewes eligible to participate must be purchased the previous November at the Stars of Louisville Sale, at a fall regional Southdown sale that agrees to pay 1% gross Southdown sale commission to the Association or nominated as ewe lambs for the previous year’s futurity contest. (Passed policy-Reorganizational meeting 2005).

511.5 Futurity nomination fee of $25 for each nominated lamb will be deducted from the sale proceeds. The sale management will then forward nomination fees to the ASBA office. (Passed policy - summer meeting 2007).

Pot O’;’’Gold Futurity Point Rules’’ 511.10 CONSIGNOR RULES FOR Futurity animals: 511.11 Futurity ewe lambs must be entered and sell at the auction of a designated sale and not be pre-sold. For online sales, a sale occurs at the closing of the bidding and animals that have no bid do not qualify through that sale.

The winning bidder will be verified by the sale management. The nomination fee is paid once per animal. Yearlings that were nominated as ewe lambs may participate in the Yearling Futurity for no additional fee 511.12 Lambs are guaranteed to hold lambs teeth for 12 months from birth date. Failure to do so will give junior right to reimbursement of price paid plus a hearing for other provable harm before any dispute resolution board identified in the Association constitution.

511.20 EXHIBITOR RULES FOR FUTURITY ANIMALS: 511.21 A junior is an exhibitor who is not more than 21 on the January 1, of the calendar year. Refer to the NAILE Junior Southdown show rulebook for age definition. There is no lower age limit, but the junior must be physically capable of showing their own sheep. Junior’s with special needs that require the assistance of an additional showpersons are allowed to participate if another junior shows the animal from the head.

511.22 Junior members must physically show from the head of their Futurity animal to qualify for points at each show. If there are two Futurity animals in the same class, the junior must exhibit one and another junior member must exhibit the second animal. No points are awarded if the second animal is shown by an adult.

511.23 Futurity animals are to be registered in the individual junior name only. No partnerships, farm, family, 4-H Club or FFA Chapter names accepted..

511.24 Futurity animals and points earned in the Futurity are not transferable to any other person, nor are points transferable from one lamb to another.

511.25 A futurity entrant may compete with as many futurity animals in each class (Spring ewe lamb, fall ewe lamb, yearling ewe) as desired, but will receive a premium only for the futurity animal with the highest point total in that class. An entrant may place and receive premium in more than one class.

511.26 A futurity animal must be shown in her proper age class. If registration papers are not received by the first show, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to show the futurity animals in the proper age category.

511.27 Premiums: All nominating payments for each class of futurity (spring ewe lamb, fall ewe lamb and yearling ewe) shall be jackpotted up to 20 places or the number of participants, whichever is less.

511.28 The Junior owner of a Futurity ewe participates by reporting the placing of the animal at the first show and identifying the animal by the scrapie tag number.

511.29 A point record form must be filled out for each show and forwarded to the Association office postmarked within 14 days of the show. The card must be signed by the superintendent of the appropriate show certifying that the junior exhibited the futurity animals, class size, scrapie tag number and the placing of the futurity animals.

511.30 At each individual show the futurity animals may earn futurity points from either the open division or junior division, but not both. Separate 4-H and FFA shows at the same fair, are considered one junior division. At the North American (NAILE) only junior show placing will be counted.

511.31 Futurity animals can compete at an unlimited number of shows with only the top five (5) point award shows being recorded as the Futurity point total.

511.32 Futurity awards will be announced following the Junior Show at the North American International Livestock Exposition. # in Class 1-5 6 - 10 11 - 15 16 - 20 21 - 25 26 +

511.40 YEARLING EWE FUTURITY RULES: 511.41 The yearling ewes eligible to participate were purchased the previous November at the Stars of Louisville Sale, at a fall regional Southdown Sale that agrees to pay 1% gross Southdown sale commission to the Association or nominated by breeder and eligible to participate as ewe lambs for the previous year’s futurity contest.

511.42 Yearling purchased in the name of an older sibling, that because of employment or advanced education is unable to show at fairs, may be transferred to the name of a younger sibling, but this applies to the entire show season, not individual shows. Only a sibling can show a yearling ewe that was in the ewe lamb futurity the previous year. This change of exhibitor needs to be documented in the Association office. (Passed policy-reorganizational meeting 2004).

511.42 Yearlings that are eligible to participate are nominated by submission of a point record form. The $25 nomination fee at the “Stars Sale” will be included in the Yearling payout.

511.43 A traveling trophy will be presented to the winner of each animal class.
