President’’s Message Hello Southdown Breeders and friends. I hope everyone has had an outstanding lambing season and is ready for another great year in the Southdown business. This, our second Southdown Journal & Directory, is due to all the people who have supported us with ads and articles. I want to make sure I say thank you. I hope that if you didn’t advertise this year, that you will consider us for the Louisville Preview this fall or next year’s Journal and Directory. The Hairy Lamb issue is a problem that has nagged our breed for a long time and it is exciting to have some real answers at last. I ask you to please carefully read the Hairy Lamb report that is in this issue. I know that as we identify carriers, we will have some negative concerns, but in the end, it will help move our breed forward and make us stronger. I personally want to thank the committee for their work and all of those who sent in samples to help with the research. The National Sale is back in Sedalia and already sounds like a barn burner! It will sure be worth your time to make the trip out or at least call in mail bids on some of the best our breed has to offer. It is also exciting to know that the National Junior Show will team back up with the All-American junior Show. This show in Iowa could well be the biggest National Junior Show ever. Let’s help support our juniors in Des Moines. Looking to the future, I have two thoughts for you to consider. First, support our youth. Never let us take them for granted or think that the programs will keep going without all of our support. Keeping our Junior program relevant and fully supported is a must for the future of our breed. Second, we need to realize that Southdowns are the only purebred breed that has breeding sheep and wether sheep that can be the same animal. You only have to look at other breeds to see how this separation has hurt their breeds. We have the complete package, but we need to keep the pressure on breeders and judges to keep October 1, 2010 – September 30, 2011 Southdowns complete. Southdowns that After Shock Derek Wilson Titusville, PA can show in both breeding classes and Calhoun Emily Johnson Sandwich, IL still produce wethers are one of the best Cavalierr Mapolyne Farms Sycamore, OH Coach Misti Williams Ridott, IL ways to keep our Junior members excited Flair Derek Wilson Titusville, PA about Southowns.

As I close this letter, let me thank everyone for the chance to be President of the ASBA. It has been an honor and privilege to be your president. I know I will never forget the good times and all the wonderful people who make this breed so special. Hope you see you down the road,

Secretary’’ ’ s Column Dear Friends, This year, 2012, marks the 130th anniversary of the American Southdown Breeders’ Association. For the past one hundred and thirty year this Association has collected, verified, and published information on the history, management, and pedigrees of purebred Southdowns. For a number of years, in the early history of the Association, flock books were published with information on the pedigrees of the sheep registered. In more recent times, the Southdown handbook was printed with valuable information on the breed and a list of current breeders. Today, this Southdown Journal and Directory is compiled and printed with the same goal in mind, and that is to provide you with current information that will help during the year. You will find information on many of the youth programs the Association sponsors, along with a list of current junior and adult members, and much more. Furthermore, you will find many of the elite flocks in the breed have chosen to support this publication with information concerning their flocks. If you are new to the breed or just now considering Southdowns, you will find the Southdown breed of sheep to be the right choice, and the breeders who raise these sheep to be the best in the purebred industry. Take some time to visit with breeders at one of the many consignment sales or sheep shows, you will be glad you did. There is a reason this breed has stood the test of time and is still one of the major breeds in America today. I encourage you to study Southdowns and see the many positive traits of this breed. I believe that 2012 will be a great year for this breed as we begin a new chapter in the history of Southdowns. Please don’t hesitate to contact the Association office if we can help you in any way with your flock of Southdowns. Enjoy this current Journal and Directory, and most importantly enjoy your Southdowns!

4 THE AMERICAN SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL & DIRECTORY 2012
Hairy Lamb Research Project Dear Friends, For the past 5 to 6 years the American Southdown Breeders Association has been working with Dr. Jon Beever in an effort to determine a cause for the “hairy” lambs that have been seen in Southdown flocks for the past 25 to 30 years. Dr. Beever is a geneticist at the University of Illinois and has helped find a genetic cause for a number of diseases in multiple species including the “Spider Lamb” problem that we currently test for in sheep. We have been sending Dr. Beever samples for the past several years in an attempt to find a genetic cause for hairy lambs. This issue has been clouded because there is a condition that can cause a similar disease that is caused by a viral agent. These lambs were traditionally called “Hairy Shaker Lambs” because they had hair and would often shake and exhibit neurologic symptoms. While “hairy” Southdowns were similar in appearance, they did not show all of the same symptoms. In addition, the Southdown hairy lambs did not show the same pattern of disease prevalence that was traditionally seen with “Hairy Shaker Lambs”. As of the last few months, it appears that the mystery surrounding Southdown hairy lambs may be coming to a conclusion. On December 20, 2011 I received an email from Dr. Beever indicating that he may have found a gene associated with the cause of hairy lambs in Southdowns. In the December email Dr. Beever asked for a number of samples of normal appearing Southdowns from around the country to determine if his test was accurate. These samples were submitted toward the end of January 2012. Close to 400 samples were submitted along with the samples of animals affected with this disorder that had already been submitted to his lab over the past several years. The test results appear to be very conclusive at this time regarding the gene involved. A similar disorder found in mice and humans also appears to have a mutation at this same gene location which provides more evidence that we may have found our gene! Dr. Beever is currently concluding his analysis of the data and working with Dr. Steffen, a pathologist, at the University of Nebraska in cataloguing the various defects that this gene mutation appears to cause. When his analysis and documentation of the pathology regarding hairy lambs is complete, Dr. Beever will be submitting a full report to the ASBA Board of Directors. At this time we do not know when a test for hairy lambs will be commercially available nor do we have any idea of the cost of such a test. There have also been no decisions or discussions regarding the ASBA policy concerning this test because Dr. Beever has not completed his research and there are still questions that need to be answered. In the future the ASBA will continue to pass on information regarding this situation as soon as it is made available. If you have any question regarding this issue, please contact the ASBA office or you can reach me by email at saflanagan85@gmail.com. Sincerely, Scott Flanagan, D.V.M. ASBA Genetic Research and Development Committee Chair *Flash - On March 26, 2012, Dr. Jon Beever emailed the ASBA office with the following: The University of Illinois will begin accepting samples on April 1,2012 for testing for hairy lamb carriers. The cost of the test is $8 per sample. This will be available until a commercial test becomes available. Please contact the ASBA office for particulars on collection and sending of samples. southdownsheep.org 5
Sheep Showmanship 101 by Mark Johnson
The showman can have a larger impact in a sheep show than with any other specie. The exhibitor and the judge have more direct contact with sheep than any other animal. As a result, a sheep showman can have the largest effect on how the lamb looks and handles. That effect can be positive OR it can be negative. The goal of showmanship is simple – Make that animal look its best.
Successful showmen start very early in the project year. They start with selection. Obviously, it is easier and more fun to start with the best animal available. Showmanship needs to be part of the selection process. Structurally sound, well balanced, lambs are easier to make look good. Some are born with style and presence. Some lambs simply show better Many folks start than others. Some lambs working with the are born to brace and It is often genetic. lambs as early 30 show. When sorting through the days of age and pen to find show lambs, the best lambs and often by 60-80 find catch them. Try showdays of age. ing and bracing each one. Find the ones that work best for you. Start with a good lamb that wants to show and wants win. It makes the process easier, fun, and more successful. Start working with lambs when they are young. Many folks start working with the lambs as early 30 days of age and often by 60-80 days of age. Start with simply catching the lamb, to help calm them down. Start teaching them to brace. Begin setting the feet. Keep things simple and positive in the beginning. Most exhibitors are using halters to help exercise, move and manage their lambs. Halter breaking lambs can start at an early age. Most exhibitors start halter breaking their lambs soon after they have been selected. Start by tying the lambs to a fence or wall. Tie them in a safe place to prevent the potential of any injuries. The lambs head should be tied a comfortable, up and alert position. This will help teach the sheep to walk and show with their head in an upright and alert position. Never leave a lamb tied up and unattended. Start to walk the lamb on the halter. Most often sheep are lead on their left, like cattle and horses. More and more judges are putting emphasis on how the sheep look on the move. It is also important to practice walking the sheep without a 6 THE AMERICAN SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL & DIRECTORY 2012

Don’t just go through the motions. Bracing the lamb needs to make the lamb handle firm. It is important when bracing the lamb in the show ring to keep all four of the lamb’s feet on the ground. Some sheep and some exhibitors have a tendency to over brace. The lamb handles firm, but falls apart. Lambs that are over bracing often squat, sink into their front and break over their top. The sheep and the exhibitor need to look natural while bracing. The judge does not handle the sheep with their eyes closed. PRACTICE. Most exhibitors start working with their show sheep at least 60 -90 days before the first show. A typical practice schedule would include 3-4 days of showmanship practice each week. How long each animal is worked with is determined by how long the class will last. 10 -15 minutes for each lamb is common. Don’t forget the grand drive. The lamb and the exhibitor need to be in shape. It is work. It helps to have someone else to handle the lamb while they are being worked with. This allows the sheep to become familiar with how they will be handled in the show ring. It also allows the exhibitor to continually monitor the lamb’s body condition. Keep the movements working around the sheep easy, smooth and decisive, keep the sheep between you and the judge. The exhibitor’s appearance and attitude is an important part of show-

Simple things, like be neat and clean, tuck your shirt in, tie your shoes. Judges don’t want to see your underwear. Keep your hair out of your face. Exhibitors need to keep their shirts buttoned up. A little “bling” is ok. Don’t let it become distracting to you as exhibitor, the lamb, or the judge. The only skin we want to see is your hands and smiling face. Have fun in the show ring. A smile is contagious. Showman should be confident, but not cocky or arrogant. Be courteous to other exhibitors, show officials and the judge. Keep in mind, you might show under that judge again. Rules vary from show to show. It is important to be familiar with rules for that show. Some shows have rules regarding dress code, halters etc. It is a good idea to watch the judge work a class or two to become familiar with how they work they ring. They all do it slightly differently. Listen to the judge’s comments about the lambs and the exhibitors. That will help you determine the judge's likes and dislikes. Exhibitors need to be aware of where the are in the ring. ASBA Website Gets a Facelift The look and feel of the ASBA website received a makeover last fall. When you visit the site, www.southdownsheep.org you’ll still find your favorite pages like Breeder Links, ASBA Forms, Show and Sale Results and the Calendar. Now you’ll also find new features such as “Meet a Member”, classified ads and banner advertising options. The eCommunications committee including Lisa Scramlin, Sarina Rinker, Kay Jabs, Dusty Oldenburg and Amy Jones selected a web design vendor, wrote and collected content and pictures to hit their goal of the “refreshed” site going live on November 1, 2011; just in time for NAILE and to used to advertise the “Stars” sale. The committee is discussing online registrations and payment as a phase II of this project in 2013. Check out the new and very affordable online advertising options on the site, starting at just $25 for a classified ad. Since the November 1 launch, approximately 1,200 unique visitors visit the site each month! The most visited page on the site is the “Breeder Link” page. If you have any questions about online advertising options, questions or feedback regarding the site, please contact Amy Jones at circlejsouthdowns@hughes.net.

Pot O’;’’Gold Futurity Point Rules’’ Ewe lambs nominated to participate in the Futurity at designated sales in the previous year plus ewe lambs purchased at the Stars of Louisville sale now compete as yearlings. The nomination is automatic and the Junior is qualified the following year if a futurity ewe lamb was purchased. Yearlings may collect points from January 1 until the Junior Show at the NAILE. New in 2011 is a Fall Ewe Lamb Futurity. See below for additional details. Cash award placings are paid from 1st to 20th in the ewe lamb Futurity. The $25 nomination fee for ewe lambs will be jackpotted and the yearling are competing for the right to hold the traveling trophy for a year. Purchase Futurity Ewe Lambs at These Designated Sales: Illini All Breeds Sale - Oklahoma Black and White Sale - Ohio Southdown Classic Sale - Keystone Stud Ram & Ewe Sale National Cornbelt Sale - Eastern Stud Ram Sale - Midwest Stud Ram Sale - National Southdown Sale - New England Sale - Nuggett All-American Sale - Wisconsin Southdown Symposium Consignor Rules for Ewe Lambs: Nomination fee is $25.00 payable to the American Southdown Breeders’ Assn. Ewe lambs must be nominated and designated prior to entering the show ring. Futurity ewe lambs must be entered and sell at auction of a designated sale and not be pre-sold. Lambs are guaranteed to hold lambs teeth for 12 months from birth date. Failure to do so will give junior right to reimbursement of price paid plus a hearing for other provable harm before any dispute resolution board identified in the Association constitution. Exhibitor Rules for Ewe Lambs: A junior is an exhibitor who is not more than 21 on January 1. There is no lower age limit, but the junior must be physically capable of showing their own sheep (handicap is excepted). Junior members must physically show their Futurity lamb to qualify for points at each show. If there are two Futurity lambs in the same class, the junior must exhibit one and another junior member may exhibitor the second lamb. Ewe lambs are eligible to compete in one of the two ewe lamb Futuritys. Fall ewe lambs are those born September 1 - December 31, 2011. Spring ewe lambs are those born after January 1. Ewe lambs are to be registered in the individual junior name only. No partnerships, farm, family, 4-H Club or FFA Chapter names accepted. The purchasing junior can not be an immediate family member of the breeder or employee of the breeder as listed on the ewe’s registration paper. Immediate family members would be described as any first generation child, grandchild, sister, brother, niece or nephew. Ewe lambs and points earned in the Futurity are not transferable to any other person, nor are points transferable from one lamb to another. Any Futurity entrant may compete with as many lambs as desired, but will receive premium for the ewe lamb with the highest point total. Each junior may win only one top twenty award and one district award. Ewe lamb must be shown in her proper age class. If registration papers are not received by the first show, it is the exhibitor’s responsibility to show the lamb in the proper age category. Premiums: All nomination fees will be jackpotted and paid down 20 places. Lambs will be nominated for Futurity purposes at the sale after purchase. Lambs must have their scrapie ID number recorded by a Futurity Committee Member or they are ineligible for the Futurity. A point card must be filled out for each show and forwarded to the Association office within 14 days of the show. The card must be signed by the superintendent of the appropriate show certifying that the junior exhibited the lamb, class size, and the placing of the lamb. At each individual show the ewe lamb may earn Futurity points from either the open division or junior division, but not both, except at the North American (N.A.I.L.E.) where only junior show placings will be counted. Ewe lambs can compete at an unlimited number of shows with only the top five (5) point award shows being recorded as the Futurity point total. No designated show will be before the Midwest Stud Ram Sale. Futurity awards will be announced following the Junior Show at the 2004 North American International Livestock Exposition. Lambs that are not nominated by the junior purchaser on the day of the sale will become ineligible for the Futurity. Yearling Ewe Futurity Rules: The yearling ewes eligible to participate were purchased the previous November at the Stars of Louisville sale, at a fall regional Southdown sale that agrees to pay 1% gross Southdown sale commission to the Association or tattooed and eligible to participate as ewe lambs for the previous years futurity contest. Yearling’s purchased in the name of an older sibling, that because of employment or advanced education is unable to show at fairs, may be transferred to the name of a younger sibling, but this applies to the entire show season, not individual shows. Except 7, 8 & 9, all above ewe lamb futurity rules apply to the yearling ewe futurity. A traveling trophy will be presented to the winner. All shows from January 1 thru Louisville Junior show will become eligible for yearling ewe futurity point accumulation. This is intended to reward junior exhibitors that have success in the mid winter shows, such as Texas and Pennsylvania. 50 THE AMERICAN SOUTHDOWN JOURNAL & DIRECTORY 2012
