Under Construction is a multi-national theatre company, making devised performance, with a particular interest in the physical presence of text and poetic expression. Constructing site-sensitive work that engages the audience as an active participant, the company’s ethos is centred upon collaboration with other artists and art forms. Working “between media”, Under Construction’s performances exist both in the lived moment and resonate beyond the event, but most importantly, do not forget a sense of play.

A WALK BETWEEN, 6TH SEPTEMBER 2007 Performed at dusk in the walled gardens of Southside House, Wimbledon, A Walk Between reflected the wild, almost magical character of the site. Taking the visually evocative depictions of Venice in Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, as initial inspiration, a period of six months was spent visiting Southside, researching in to its history, and creating stories that explored one’s ability to describe places we remember. Using the primary notion of a conversation between a traveller and a character enclosed by the garden’s walls, four actors and a director were brought on board in the final stages to develop more personal accounts of cities travelled, and it is through these characters that stories unravelled - an old man waiting for letters from his daughter, a postman on a boat taking letters to a port, a letter to a mother in times of war... Thus a performance emerged that enabled the audience to explore the garden for themselves, at the same time chancing upon concurrent scenes, some intimate, others frenetic, before the gate was closed, thrusting them back outside to question whether what had been seen had even happened at all.

We had a great surprise when we noticed that more than spectators, we were part of the performance. It was touching, exciting and magical at the same time. PILAR LILLO | AUDIENCE MEMBER

A Walk Between transformed my perception of what a promenade performance might be. Set in a tranquil garden the space seemed to open out and close behind as soon as a new part was discovered. Never intrusive, the subtle interjections of text, whispered, scrawled and shouted made it seem like the words came dripping from the trees... and on closer inspection... they were. RICHARD ALLEN | THINGS ON FIRE THEATRE COMPANY

A WALK BETWEEN, 6TH SEPTEMBER 2007

...extremely original, interactive and moving, like nothing I have experienced before - is this theatre?! ...the performance felt like a fresh collaboration between audience, garden and cast... I felt unease and not relaxed... unlike other plays this was not passive, we were actively part of the space... CATHERINE CAREW-HUNT | AUDIENCE MEMBER

The conviction, and passion with which the actors drew spectators into their magic world of ideas and illusion was convincing, challenging, and finally very moving...Many of us felt that we had become the first participatory audience for an electrifying new talent...
