74 Louisa McElwain 1953-2013 High Desert Afternoon Oil on canvas 10 x 16 inches Signed lower left Estimate: $2,500 - 4,500

The natural world filled Louisa McElwain with the energy and power that drove her impulse to paint, a dynamic expressed in the thick impastos of her palette knife landscapes of New Mexico. McElwain would leave anything that drifted onto her plein air works and would often introduce bits of found objects, seeking to create textures that would connect her vision of the scene she painted with the scene itself.

75 Peter Hurd 1904-1984 Riverside Bar Watercolor 9 x 12 inches Signed lower left Estimate: $3,000 - 5,000

Peter Hurd studied with N. C. Wyeth and eventually married Wyeth's daughter Henriette, also a fine painter. A New Mexico native, Hurd lived and worked there for most of his life. His tempera paintings and watercolors occasionally reveal something of Wyeth's influence, but Hurd’s own work is closely bound to the colors and contours of the Southwestern landscape.
