Scottish Ballet is Scotland’s national dance company. Founded by Peter Darrell and Elizabeth West as Western Theatre Ballet in Bristol in 1957, the Company moved to Glasgow in 1969 and was renamed Scottish Ballet. The Company employs 36 full-time dancers. In June 2009, it moved to new purpose-built national headquarters at the Tramway international arts centre in Glasgow following an impressive fundraising campaign and building project. 2009/2010 2009 was a truly momentous year for Scotland’s national dance company. Celebrating its 40th anniversary Scottish Ballet moved into its brand new £11million purpose-built headquarters; performed on the world stage at the Edinburgh International Festival, on tour in China, and made guest appearances in Paris, Barcelona and Estonia as well as premiering two brand new works made exclusively for the Company (Richard Alston’s Carmen and Ian Spink’s Petrushka). Scottish Ballet launched a new BA in Modern Ballet in partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and expanded its acclaimed Associate Programme, which trains young dancers, providing an invaluable resource for the future of dance in Scotland. In a dazzling 40th anniversary season, Scottish Ballet premiered Mercury, a specially commissioned digital artwork by film maker Daniel Warren, created as part of a touring exhibition, and launched its stunning coffee table book Scottish Ballet: Forty Years.
Scottish Ballet: A Cultural Ambassador for Scotland An award-winning Company Since being awarded the TMA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 2004 in recognition of its modernisation programme and dynamic performances, Scottish Ballet and several of its dancers have gone on to win a clutch of national and international awards each year. 2009 saw this trend continuing as the Company was nominated for no less than three awards in the highly respected Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards - the Oscars for the Dance world! Scottish Ballet was nominated for Dance Europe Outstanding Company, and company dancers Martina Forioso and Paul Liburd were nominated for Outstanding Female Performance (Classical) and Dancing Times Winner for Best Male Dancer respectively. The latter was indeed won by Paul, who was also honoured with an MBE for Services to Dance. Scottish Ballet also won a Golden Twit Award in the category of Business to Consumer for its effective and innovative use of social networking site Twitter.
Flying the flag for Scotland on the international stage Scottish Ballet is proud of its status as Scotland’s national dance company and utilises all opportunities to best represent to a world-wide audience that Scotland is a modern, innovative country with a vibrant, diverse culture. In 2009 Scottish Ballet delivered a number of international performances. In May 2009, with the support of the Scottish Government’s International Touring Fund, Scottish Ballet undertook a highly successful tour of a double bill featuring two of the Company’s original works, Carmen and Pennies from Heaven, to Nanjing, Shanghai and Beijing, China. Over five performances the Company attracted an audience of 5,050 people as well as a wide range of media who met the opportunity to photograph and interview ‘stars of Scottish Ballet’ with great enthusiasm.
The tour provided a fantastic opportunity for Scottish Ballet to promote Scotland in China and for the Company to liaise closely with Scottish Government officials and Scottish Development International to ensure that the visit linked in with other initiatives in China and fully supported the Scottish Government and Homecoming Scotland brands. Scottish Ballet was once again invited to perform at the Edinburgh International Festival, where the Company presented a diverse programme of dance that included the world premiere of Ian Spink’s Petrushka. In September, dancers Sophie Martin and Adam Blyde performed at the prestigious Gala des Étoiles du XXIe Siècle (Ballet Stars of the 21st Century) in Paris, where they presented a pas de deux from Ashley Page’s The Sleeping Beauty and the aria from Krzysztof Pastor’s In Light and Shadow. The gala was hugely successful and sold out in advance with around 4,500 people attending across the three performances. Dancers Tomomi Sato and Victor Zarallo performed at the Grand Ballet Gala in Sitges, Barcelona in November 2009, and then in March 2010, Eve Mutso and Erik Cavallari performed several pieces at the Jõhvi Ballet Festival in Tallinn, Estonia.
Developing a Broad and Diverse Audience
Reaching out across the world Pointe and click on www.scottishballet.co.uk and youâ€™ll find yourself in ballet heaven with access to a range of short films, video trailers, and photography from each of our productions - on stage and off as well as behind the scenes stories in our blog, mini synopsis books, character cards, biographies, hot off the press news, fully integrated education resources and much more. In 2009/10 www.scottishballet.co.uk received 134,691 visits and our friends, fans and alumni have also joined us across a range of social networking sites - from Facebook to our award winning Twitter site, Bebo to MySpace - and even on dedicated video networking sites such as Youtube and Vimeo. Across all of these platforms, we currently reach (and chat to!) 7,834 followers and friends, and have stacked up over 66,752 views across our online videos. This combined sees an impressive 130% increase in Scottish Balletâ€™s web community in one year.
A fiery and passionate start to the Season In spring 2009, Scottish Ballet unveiled a brand new Carmen, created on the Company by revered choreographer Richard Alston. Carmen was performed in a double bill with Ashley Page’s Cheating, Lying, Stealing, a dramatic, passionate work which showcased the technical skills of the dancers. The Spring Season toured to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness.

A glittering Ruby anniversary Scottish Ballet celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a sparkling triple bill featuring George Balanchine’s Rubies, William Forsythe’s Workwithinwork, and Krzysztof Pastor’s In Light and Shadow, sponsored by private bank Adam & Company and jewellers Hamilton & Inches. The Company had previously performed each piece at the Edinburgh International Festival (2005, 2009 and 2006 respectively) to widespread critical acclaim. Opening at Sadler’s Wells in London then touring to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness throughout October, the 40th Anniversary season received rave reviews.

A wonderfully surreal trip to a world of fantasy for all the family In December, Scottish Ballet revived Ashley Page’s The Nutcracker, which had been created in 2003 and was Page’s first full-length ballet. Opening in Glasgow then touring to Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness and Newcastle throughout January and February, The Nutcracker attracted huge audiences, making it one of the Company’s most successful productions, and again receiving enthusiastic critical acclaim.

As part of this celebratory programme, Scottish Ballet launched its own exclusive coffee table book. Scottish Ballet: Forty Years was written by renowned dance critic Mary Brennan and featured over 140 images of the Company’s 40 years on stage and off. The book was launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and partnered an iconic touring exhibition featuring archive images and a specially commissioned film from Daniel Warren.
A swell audience As well as critical acclaim for its repertoire across 09/10, Scottish Ballet performed to 74,514 people - that’s an increase of 24% since 07/08 and an increase of 17.5% from 08/09. In 09/10, Scottish Ballet reached a further 15,129 people via its Education programme (a rise of 37% on 08/09) and 6,653 people through other events facilitated by the Company including special talks and exhibitions celebrating the 40th anniversary and a number of exclusive behind-the-scenes activities for Scottish Ballet’s dedicated sponsors, supporters and Friends.
Social Science Scottish Ballet partnered the first ever Social Science event at Glasgow Science Centre in November 2009. This special evening promised attendees the ultimate adult playground with access to displays, music and entertainment focussing on the human body. Scottish Ballet dancers opened the evening with excerpts from The Nutcracker, and this unique and fun performance opportunity set against an unusual backdrop allowed the Company to reach an additional 1,000 people and raise awareness of the winter season tour.
Cross cultural growth As 2009/10 drew to a close, Scottish Ballet dancers joined forces with talented choreographers, visual artists, designers and other creative professionals for a three-week creative workshop. This exciting collaboration created opportunities for participants to look beyond their usual cultural references, taking inspiration from visual art, film and textiles, as well as dance and music.
Making a Significant Contribution to Cultural Life in Scotland
The role of education, learning and community involvement is at the heart of Scottish Balletâ€™s artistic purpose. Scottish Ballet delivers a broad-ranging access and participation programme which raises awareness and appreciation of the Company and its artistic direction, promotes ballet as a contemporary art form, and enhances the lives and learning of people of all ages and abilities. Scottish Ballet continues to expand its wide range of opportunities to access dance, for people of all ages and backgrounds, including those from disadvantaged areas. Projects include dance workshops for primary school pupils, talks for secondary schools, and theatre-based activities such as insight events, pre-show talks, and audio description and touch tours for the visually impaired. The Dancersâ€™ Apprentice Scheme, supported by The EsmĂŠe Fairbairn Foundation, supports the development of young dancers each year, preparing them for a professional career in ballet, while the acclaimed Associate Programme for young people aged between 8 and 17 trains students with the talent and focus to pursue a career in dance.
Supporting the Talent of Tomorrow
Creating a Ballet Buzz! The purpose and aim of BalletBuzz is to identify and nurture raw talent that may otherwise go unspotted. It bridges the gap between one-off workshops in schools (where sparks of enthusiasm and changed perceptions occur) and access to the Junior Associate programme. Its launch also coincided with the launch of the BA Modern Ballet at the RSAMD and of the Mid Associate strand of the Associate programme, ensuring that a clear career pathway is now fully in place. BalletBuzz offers basic ballet classes and fun creative movement to children who have never participated in ballet before. Participants are also able to watch Scottish Ballet dancers in rehearsal and to find out more about the work of the technical and wardrobe teams. BalletBuzz was piloted in spring 2009 when talented young people were spotted during the Company’s primary school workshops. 15 participants - eight boys and seven girls between the ages of 9 and 11 - were identified and invited to take part in this special scheme. Following their experience with BalletBuzz, three went on to successfully audition for Scottish Ballet’s Junior Associate programme. Scottish Ballet’s second BalletBuzz programme was rolled out from November 2009 to June 2010, this time working with schools within the Tramway catchment area to foster relationships in our new home surroundings. Eight boys and seven girls were selected to take part in the programme, and from this group a small number have applied for our Junior Associates Programme, with more enjoying a newly found love of dance.
Scottish Ballet is currently working on its third BalletBuzz programme, spotting talented young individuals through its education activity in schools across Glasgow. In Association with Scotland’s National Dance company Delivered from the dedicated Education Centre at Scottish Ballet’s headquarters at Tramway, Scottish Ballet’s acclaimed Associate programme continues to go from strength to strength. 2009 saw the introduction of a Mid Associate programme in addition to the existing Junior and Senior Associate programmes. This exciting new development means that talented young people can now access pre-vocational training right through from ages Primary 6 to Secondary 4 with no interruption. The young talent supported through this programme is exceptional, with 2009 seeing the addition of a monthly boys’ class to allow for the increased intake of male applicants.
Becoming a member of Scottish Ballet’s Associate programme brings a range of exceptional benefits. As well as access to dedicated dance facilities, the participants also benefit from a range of master classes delivered by the Company’s Education team and dancers. This year the P7 and Senior Associates were also invited to perform with the Helensburgh Orchestral Society at their annual Christmas Concert at which they presented a new piece choreographed specially for the event to Shostakovich’s 1st Ballet Suite - an exciting opportunity for all involved and an excellent chance for the Associates to experience working with a live orchestra. Indeed, such is the standard of young talent that all of the Senior Associates who completed their training in June 2009 successfully gained funded places at a range of vocational dance schools, and two Seniors Associates successfully auditioned for the new BA Modern Ballet course at the RSAMD. One Senior Associate, Scott McKenzie, was even offered the role of Billy Elliot on the West End stage in London.
BA Modern Ballet in association with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama In 2009, Scottish Ballet launched Scotland’s first ever conservatoire-based degree in Modern Ballet in partnership with the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. This three year full-time vocational degree bridges what was previously a critical gap in dance training in Scotland, allowing young dancers to complete their professional training in Scotland for the first time. “Commitment to education is an integral part of Scottish Ballet’s mission. With the move to our new home at Tramway last year, it has been possible to work with the RSAMD to provide this new, modern ballet degree. The combination of the specialist facilities, resources and knowledge of the RSAMD combined with the artistic input and guidance of Scottish Ballet makes this an excellent opportunity for gifted students who wish to pursue a career in professional dance. Course students benefit from dedicated time spent with Scottish Ballet dancers in class, through a range of master classes, and from observation opportunities.
There was fierce competition for the 14 places available in the inaugural year of the course, which began in September 2009, with over 100 young people applying. The successful 13 girls and two boys came from as far a field as Bermuda and Malaysia. The course is led by Scottish Ballet’s Deputy Artistic Director Paul Tyers, and tutors on the course include Kerry Livingstone, Head of Scottish Ballet’s Associate Programme, contemporary dancer Steinvor Palsson, and ex-Scottish Ballet dancers Eleanor Moore and Oliver Rydout. This brand new course follows on from the successful relationship between Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama established in 2005 with the introduction of a Postgraduate Diploma in Music (Pianism for Dance) – a specialised programme that provides intensive high-level training, experience and development for a professional career as a pianist for dance. The Company’s participation in the Awards for Young Musicians scheme, a national organisation which supports gifted and talented young musicians with limited financial means, was also met with positive response when, in the course of The Nutcracker tour, each of the participants was ‘buddied’ with an appropriate member of our orchestra, given a backstage tour and the unique opportunity to sit in the pit with their buddy during a matinee as well as a ticket to see an evening performance. “The music was inspirational and, in the unique position of sitting with the orchestra in the pit, I could see how much thought and feeling went into every phrase. Both the conductor and the players performed with such commitment and the dialogue between the parts came across all the more convincingly from this angle. All in all it was an amazing afternoon and an unforgettable experience which has greatly strengthened my interest in music.” Awards for Young Musicians participant
Access All Areas As a national company, it is essential that Scottish Ballet continues to develop interesting ways to engage with its audiences. In 2009 Scottish Ballet’s Access All Areas programme, in partnership with The Herald and Times Group, continued to open doors to the Company’s touring work with a range of innovative and exciting new opportunities. In Spring 2009, Scottish Ballet joined forces with innovative event hosting service Itison to bring its special Outside In events to a new audience. Delivered from the theatre stage, Outside In is supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and uses excerpts from the repertoire, elements of sets, props and lighting, and interviews with the artistic team, orchestra members and dancers to explore all aspects of the performance. Feedback from the public was excellent and Outside In continues to grow in audience reach each season, reaching over 800 people in 09/10. “I have never attended anything to do with ballet, though have been interested, and this was the perfect opportunity to get an introduction to it. The show was just the right length for this sort of set up, mixing the very interesting interviews with the beautiful pieces. It would have been nicer to see more dancing, but the show certainly succeeded it getting me thirsty to see more, and I might be able to appreciate my first full ballet show all the more. My girlfriend also enjoyed it, she has been to a few shows before, and I think she was interested to hear about what goes on behind the scenes.” Outside In attendee invited by Itison
Scottish Ballet was the first dance company in Europe to offer live audio description for the visually impaired and maintains a programme of regular audio described performances throughout Scotland. Each audio described performance is preceded by a special touch tour event where patrons have the opportunity to get up close to a selection of costumes and props as well as to ask questions about the production and learn some of the dance vocabulary which is used in the live description. The touch tour also gives the describers a chance to introduce themselves and get to know the patrons. Scottish Ballet has been at the forefront of pushing boundaries in this particular field.

Scottish Ballet’s Access All Areas programme also includes free pre-show talks on both the artistic vision and music used for each programme. In 2009, these talks were successfully developed to include exclusive personal appearances from a number of the Company’s dancers as well as popular sessions with Artistic Director Ashley Page and Resident Conductor Richard Honner. “[It was] good to hear from the dancers’ point of view – we got so much from the performance after this talk!” Pre-show talk attendee, Eden Court Theatre Inverness

A real Christmas ‘Cracker! 2009 also saw the introduction of a very special adaptation of The Nutcracker designed to engage with, and capture the hearts - and attention! - of a young audience. Christmas ‘Cracker was just under one hour long and included narrated elements mixed with sections of the original production of The Nutcracker. Audiences were enthralled and the show very quickly sold out, with 61% of those that offered feedback reporting that they’d never been to see a ballet before.
Scottish Ballet in schools In 2009, Scottish Ballet continued to develop its schools programme with DanceWise - a range of illustrated talks for students of Art and Design, Music, Dance, PE, English and Drama, as well as offering its ever-popular dance workshop programme. 87% of participants thought that the range of DanceWise talks had changed their or their students’ perception of ballet, while 71% also felt that it had increased their students’ understanding of ballet. Scottish Ballet also made a range of inspired virtual appearances in classrooms across Scotland with its tutorials on GLOW, the Scottish schools intranet.

Live music also accompanies the dance workshop programme to the delight of all participants. “The pianist was excellent and used a number of genres to capture the attention of the children. The explanation of the music used in ballet, which helps to tell the story, was clearly presented at a level which every child could understand. And, of course, what better way for the schools to engage with the work of Scottish Ballet than a visit to the theatre to see the performances they’ve just been learning about. In 09/10 Scottish Ballet facilitated this for around 1,100 primary school pupils and 1,200 pupils from secondary schools.

Glowing for gold Scottish Ballet was one of the first arts organisations to utilise GLOW (the Scottish schools intranet), and the Company has since delivered three live events; the first a DanceWise lecture on The Nutcracker for Art and Design pupils with live input from the Wardrobe team, the second a Q&A session with Scottish company dancers about their career pathways and the third a live broadcast from the production workshop featuring lighting and special effects. These events were accessible to every school in Scotland and reached participants as far as Moray and Aberdeenshire, to Argyll & Bute and West Lothian. Indeed, Scottish Ballet continues to provide groundbreaking Education opportunities via the world wide web with the Company’s dedicated online Education resources gaining an impressive 10,179 page visits from March 09 to March 10. These resources, based on Scottish Ballet’s dynamic reinterpretations of classic stories, feature a range of creative workshop ideas and lesson plans across several subjects in the school curriculum.
Summer fun Using Scottish Ballet’s new Education centre at Tramway for the first time in July 2009 were an excited bunch of ballet fans and participant enjoying access to the Company’s special summer programme of open classes for adults and two summer courses for young dancers - all of which were fully subscribed. Of course, the outreach work and the national remit remain equally important as Scottish Ballet’s ‘home’ activity, and the Education team also delivered summer workshops on Barra and North Uist.
Lifelong Learning Lifelong Learning opportunities are central to Scottish Ballet’s Education and Outreach programme, and as well as illustrated talks delivered to groups across the cities that the Company tours to and a range of Adult Dance classes delivered from the brand new Education Centre at Tramway, Scottish Ballet – 40 years on: a celebration of your national Company was launched in association with the University of Glasgow (Department for Adult and Continuing Education) in autumn 2009. This series of eight illustrated lectures with numerous examples of visual extracts, music and cultural influences reached full capacity and delivered a fun learning experience. “Every aspect of the course was delightful and interesting. Dedicated to Development
Supporting Scottish Ballet Scottish Ballet’s Development team continued to explore exciting new ways to enhance opportunities and support for the Company from both individuals and businesses. In the last year, there has been an increase in individual giving income to Scottish Ballet, and the number of Friends of Scottish Ballet also increased by 22% in 2009/10. “Having given our family so much pleasure in the past we are delighted we can play in Scottish ballet’s success and look forward to many years of enjoyment in the future’” The Bairds, Director’s Circle members
Members of the public were encouraged to buy Scottish Ballet dancers their shoes in celebration of the Company’s 40th anniversary, and this Ruby Slipper Fund raised more than £25,500 from over 280 supporters, 30% of whom were new donors to the Company. Autumn 2009 Season co-sponsors, Hamilton and Inches, also helped Scottish Ballet embrace the world of fashion by commissioning a limited edition sterling silver ballet shoe charm to commemorate the Company’s 40th anniversary, with 10% of the sale proceeds going towards the ongoing work of Scottish Ballet. Although the recession has presented challenges in terms of corporate support in 2009/10, Scottish Ballet has succeeded in continuing to develop more business backing, attracting two new sponsors in Aberdeen, Exxon Mobil and Aberdeen Asset Management. Scottish Ballet continues to benefit from the support of a number of Trusts and Foundations including a grant of almost £100,000 from The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation towards the Dancers’ Apprentice Scheme and a three-year grant of £30,000 towards the costs of professional musicians for the education programme from The Robertson Trust.
Scottish Ballet 2009/10
2009/10 was a landmark year for Scottish Ballet, not only in its celebration of 40 years but in the sheer breadth of activity that continued to build and support the Companyâ€™s world-class reputation. In 2009/10 Scottish Ballet presented a total of 89 performances to 74,514 people. This was supported by a wide-ranging education and engagement programme consisting of 55 events and 15,129 attendances, benefiting people of all ages. A lively programme of special events and engagement activities was also presented across the year reaching a further 6,772 people. While the economic climate has continued to present some challenges, particularly with generating income through business sponsorship, this has been partially cushioned by strong performance at the box office, and Scottish Ballet ends the year in reasonable financial health. Scottish Ballet has now been operating for over a year in its new building at Tramway, which has truly transformed the operation, volume, breadth and ambition of the work the Company is able to produce, both for the stage and through its extensive and evolving education programme. As Scottish Ballet moves into a new decade it is appropriate to look back and thank everyone who has continued to support and engage with the Company throughout. This has been particularly important during such a celebratory year and provides a very firm basis for Scottish Ballet to move forward and face the challenges of the future.
