WILLIAM GEORGE AGENCY Mission of Gratitude THE FOR CHILDREN’S SERVICES

The

William George Agency for Children’s Services and the George Junior Republic Union Free School District provide residential and educational services to youth and families and have done so for the past 125 years. A campus-wide “Mission of Gratitude” initiative has been underway on our campus. As the COVID-19 crisis continues to create a significant disruption to our daily lives, the remarkable staff within various departments on our campus have continue to support the emotional and physical well-being of our youth in extraordinary ways.

We currently have over 150 youth on our campus, spread out over 18 different cottage buildings, all of which have been entirely selfcontained for nearly two months in the interest of preventing the spread of a potential COVID-19 case on our campus. Resident youth took this opportunity to apply their creative skills to develop hundreds of signs of appreciation for each department thanking them for their specific contributions during this extremely difficult

time. Our Independent Living Skills Coordinators organized and implemented this initiative on their behalf by collecting and disseminating the signs, along with several other decorations and surprises, typically during the late evening or very early morning hours to ensure the surprise of each department and over 400 hundred staff members. The idea behind the Mission of Gratitude was sparked by the well-known “Pay It Forward” initiatives. The kids and staff wanted to show their appreciation and gratitude for each and every one of our employee’s dedication to supporting and helping them during this uncertain time, all the while trying to take care of their own families’ needs. Similar to the goal of any “Pay It Forward” initiative, the hope is that the mission of gratitude and random acts of kindness continue throughout campus and into the larger community in order to spread some positivity and support to one another.
