SUDBURY & DISTRICT THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION A BIG THANK YOU to everyone for giving so generously again this year to the Poppy Appeal and to everyone for giving their time to collect, distribute boxes or count when boxes come back in. We also thank the local shops supermarkets and businesses who take boxes or allow collectors on their premises. To date the total stands at £47,327.13 which is £305 more than last years final total of £47,022 on 30th September 2017. Although the Poppies are packed away until October 2018 fund raising is ongoing by way of all year round boxes in shops, businesses and small home boxes. Also throughout the year we hold events in aid of the Poppy Appeal or the Branch or Branch Welfare and we also receive various donations for example in Remembrance from a Funeral. Meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in the Snooker Club, North St, Sudbury, 7pm for 7.30pm start. Branch Meetings take the form of business meetings but in February, April, June and August we have Speakers and welcome friends or someone new and maybe if they enjoy the event they will join the Branch! Anyone can be a member, male or female, as the Legion is for anyone to join not just ex Service personnel. Colin Smith is our Membership Secretary and can be approached via the telephone number for myself below. We do have Welfare Officers who should be contacted via the Freephone 0808 8028080. Both Service and ex Service and their dependants can qualify for Welfare help and will be seen by our local Welfare Officers. Looking forward November 11th 2018 Remembrance will be 100 years since the end of WW1 and Branches are planning various Commemoration Events leading up to and also after the 11th November 2018. Here in Sudbury we are formulating plans for the Commemorations which we plan to finish with a special Dinner at The Bull Hotel, Long Melford. I shall expect to be able to inform dates and ideas in the next publication of Events. Finally follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ groups/1431288183750462/ for up to date news and events and also on the Branch website http://branches.britishlegion. org.uk/branches/sudbury Cynthia Hume, Branch Secretary Tel: 01787 374277

50 YEARS OF PRESERVING THE STOUR FOR YOU 2018 will mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the River Stour Trust. The Trust was formed in 1968 to fight the proposed closure of navigation on this historic river that was first granted by an Act of 1705. A public right of navigation remains today and is administered by the Environment Agency. However, many of the locks have disappeared and through navigation from Brundon Mill, upstream of Sudbury in Suffolk, to the sea at Brantham in Essex (a distance of approximately 25 miles) is only achievable by lighter craft such as canoes and kayaks. For 50 years the Trust has worked tirelessly to preserve the Stour for you. It has successfully completed a number of projects, including: • restoring/rebuilding four of the river’s original 13 locks (Great Cornard Lock was the

first new lock on the river for over 200 years and Stratford St Mary Lock will mark the culmination of over 10 years back-breaking work!) • restoring the historic, riverside Granary building at Sudbury which hosts a variety of functions including weddings and the Trust’s Tea Room; • building a Visitor Education Centre at Cornard which facilitates educational activities about the river’s history, present and future; • securing public access points and slipways along the whole 25 mile length of the river; The Trust’s dedicated team of volunteers organise public events every year such as the annual Sudbury to the Sea canoeing event which attracts over 500 entrants from all over the world! The trip boats at Sudbury, Dedham

and Flatford carry thousands of people every year who come to visit Constable Country and see the locations of his most famous masterpieces. In 2018 there will be many events celebrating the 50th Anniversary and the Trust is delighted to be a part of the inaugural year of the River Stour Festival. This will celebrate the river, its culture, surrounding landscape and people throughout 2018. This river has a long history which we hope you will help us preserve. We could not exist without our members and supporters. It’s our Stour so let’s make sure we enjoy it for years to come! Please get in touch to find out more about the Trust, its volunteering opportunities and upcoming activities and events. Visit www. riverstourtrust.org or call 01787 313199.

Pet advice by Ardmore Veterinary Group SENIOR PETS Beginning at around age 7-8, your pet is on his or her way to becoming a Senior Citizen. As animals get older they, like us, begin to develop illnesses associated with ageing such as kidney failure, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and cancer. These usually develop gradually so that very often our pets show no warning signs until the problem is well advanced. Early detection and intervention leads to a lifetime of good health. We all want our pets to live happy, good quality lives in their ‘golden years’. New knowledge and treatments mean that many age-related conditions can often be treated quite easily,

as long as we notice them early on. This can help add years to your pet’s life, and just as importantly, give your pet the quality of life he or she deserves. Together, we can help your pet. You know your pet better than anyone else and can alert us to any changes before they become serious. We can help you understand the common medical conditions that your senior pet faces, and discuss a regular monitoring plan that suits you.

Senior Pet MOT We would like to invite you to book a FREE appointment for a full Senior Pet Health Assessment where our Pet Health Adviser examines your pet, particularly looking for problems affecting our older pets, such as lumps, weight problems and stiffness. Blood tests are available at special rates to detect early signs of disease. Should the need arise, your pet may be referred to the vets for further investigations so that we can give your pets the quality of life they deserve in their golden years.

ARDMORE CLINICS The nurses continue to hold their regular weight and dental clinics. Acupuncture treatment and osteoarthritis management clinics are now available with 3 of our vets able to offer acupuncture for your pets. Please contact the surgery for further information. 01787 372588 www.ardmorevets.co.uk

The Orihuela Costa lies on the most Southern point of the Costa Blanca and comprises of approximately 16 km of fine sandy ’blue flag’ beaches, rocky coves and sparkling blue waters of the Mediterranean. The climate is typically Mediterranean with welcome cool sea breezes in summer and protection by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. It averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees. The area is a golfers paradise with 4 golf courses in Orihuela Costa: Las Ramblas, Villamartin, Campoamor and the award winning Las Colinas. There are many other golf courses all within an hours drive. Orihuela Costa hosts a wide variety of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. With some bars and restaurants providing free evening entertainment. At the new shopping centre “Zenia Boulevard” you will find a varied range of retailers and restaurants. Open air entertainment also takes place throughout the year. Orihuela Costa is ideally placed to visit the historical towns of Cartagena, Murcia, Orihuela, Alicante and Elche and are all within one to one and a half hours drive. In 1986 the World Health Organisation recommended the climate of the area as one of the most equitable in the world - neither too hot in the summer nor too cold in the winter. On average it can boast 325 sunny days a year making it an ideal all year round destination.
