Mr. Conradt’s Hour 4 Consumer reports!

The Diaper Truth! Many families spend thousands of dollars on diapers every year without even knowing if the quality of the diaper matches the price .Over the past week we have conducted multiple tests to figure which diaper will get the most bang for your buck.

Absorbency The first test the we conducted was the absorbency of the diaper, we tested four brands. Luvs, Huggies, Parents choice, and Pampers. What we did was we held a diaper over the sink and took a graduated cylinder and poured 50 mL at a time until it leaked . (As shown on bottom), Pampers held the most water at 350 mL.

Survey

The second test we conducted was a survey. Our survey was on which diaper is the softest. What we did was we got a notebook and we made four columns, one column per each kind of diaper. One column for Parent’s Choice, Pampers, Huggies, and Luvs. We surveyed fifty people. We collected the data and created a pie chart. (The pie chart is shown to the left) The pie chart shows that fifty six percent chose Luvs diapers, as the softest diapers out of the four possible choices. The least favorited diaper is Parent’s Choice, with only seven percent. We also did two other experiments.

Cost At Walmart

Our third test we conducted, was the cost. We researched the price for Parent’s Choice, Pampers, Luvs, and Huggies. we didn’t have a computer nearby so we researched the cost at Walmart on our phone’s. For a box of diapers containing 300 diapers cost 40$ for luvs, and a box of 144 diapers cost 20$. (And the rest are shown at left)

Durability For our final test we tested durability. We got two of each diaper and some sand paper. We each stroke diapers on the our piece of sandpaper. As shown below, Huggies blew the competition away with an average of 46 strokes on the sandpaper

Conclusion After all of the test were conducted, we have concluded that Luvs diapers are the best diapers for your baby, they are the best priced diapers, also the softest diaper, although it is not the most absorbent diaper, it can hold, 340 ML. The down side is Luvs are not very durable, seeing that it only took, an average of fourteen strokes on sand paper. These tests that we conducted have helped us decide which diapers are the best.

The Right Type of Soap Brand There are many different types of soaps and they can get very expensive, especially if you don’t know all the pros and cons about each soap. In this article, we are trying to help you make the right decision. We did an experiment on foaminess of the soaps, the cleaning power of the soap, the smell of the soap, and the price of the soaps. We used four different types of soaps, and the names were Softsoap: Coconut & Warm Ginger, Dial, c, and Serenity: Coconut Lime.

Foamiest Hand Soap Our first experiment was on the foaminess of each hand soap. We started by plugging the sink and turning the sink water on cold. From there, we added two squirts of soap and then let the water run for ten more seconds. When we turned off the water we measured the highest amount of foam and recorded the data (see graph at right). We repeated that three times for each soap.

Bacteria/ Cleaning Power Our second experiment we did was figuring out the soap that cleans the best. First we started off with drawing a line on our hand with a pen that was 4 cm long. We then put two squirts of the soap on our hand and scrubbed for one minute. Once the minutem was over we washed our hands and recorded how much of the line was left on a scale of 1-3. One meaning it was totally gone, two meaning there still was the line but there was a big difference from when we started, and three meaning there wasn’t much

difference at all. We repeated that for all four soaps three times and recorded our data. (See graph at left)

Smell of the Soaps In our next experiment we two squirts of soap in a small cup and labeled the cups a, b, c, and d. A was the Dial hand soap, b was the Softsoap: aloe soothing hand soap, c was the Coconut Lime Hand soap, and D was the Softsoap: Coconut & Warm Ginger. We put the soap in cups and labeled them so that the people that we surveyed were not persuaded by the brands. Once we put the soaps in the cups we went around the school and asked students and teachers which one was their favorite. As we went around the school, we recorded our data. (see graph at right)

Price of the Soaps Our last experiment we did was figure out the price per ounce of each Handsoap. We researched the prices for three different stores; the stores were Walgreens, Walmart, and Target. We figured out the price for each bottle, then divided that by the number of ounces in that bottle, to come up with the price per ounce for that soap. We recorded our data as we went. (See graph at left) We know that there are a lot of different soaps to choose from, and we all need them! Although these are only four different types of soap, this may have given you an idea of what to look for in each soap. Now that you have read this article, you know the pros and cons of these types of soaps, and saw which soap you want to buy next, and where you want to buy these soaps. http://img1.targetimg1.com/wcsstore/TargetSAS//img/p/14/28/14282319_201308141112. jpg

Paper Plates: Which is the Best? In our group we had paper plates. We tested the paper plates with durability, strength, price, and appearance. The brands of paper plates that we used were Dixie, Hefty, Chinet, and Great Value. We think that dixie was the best out of all of the other brands.. The first thing we tested was apperance. We took our paper plates around to 10 people and asked for

their opinion

on the different kinds of plates. We came to the conclusion that Dixie and Great Value were tied with 4 votes each. Hefty and Chinet both had only 1 vote. So we came to a draw seeing as Dixie and Great Value are the most liked as indicated by the chart at right. Next, we tested the Durability of the plates. As you can see to the left we tested each plate twice and found the average of each and measured in number of swipes of using a very coarse grained sandpaper. Dixie clearly blew it out of the water. Dixie won the Durability Test with an average of 635 swipes, Chinet came

in second with an average of 275.5, next was Great Value an average of 152.5, and Hefty came in last with only an average of 42. After the Durability challenge, we decided to see which store is the best to buy the plates. We used Walmart and Sams Club as our retailers. It is clear that Great Value does have the best average price at Walmart compared to Sams Club. Chinet was the most expensive Paper Plate we found followed by Dixie, then Hefty, and finally Great Value.

Finally, we tested what Paper Plate could hold the most weight. We stacked some books up according to the size of each plate. On top of the books we put a board to put the weights on and then balanced the plate vertically under the board and applied washers to the top. We measured the weight in grams. After we tested we saw that the Chinet brand plate held up the most weight in grams. Dixie was second, then Hefty and great value followed. After all the tests we did we got all our data. We then analyzed it and came up with our conclusion. Out of all our test it looks like that Dixie had the highest results and was one of the cheapest out of its contenders. Our hypothesis was correct after all.

Paper Plates

Do you use paper plates for camping or in your own home? Well here are the facts we gathered on different brands of paper plates the brands are Hefty, Chinex, Great Value, and Dixie. The tests we did were Size, Biodegradable, Price, and Strength. For size we measured the diameter of the plate. We used a ruler to find the diameter of each brand of plate. Graph below. For Chinet we got 10 inches, and for Dixie we got 8.5,then for Hefty we got 9,and Great Value got 9 to. For testing Biodegradability we burned the plates. We measured how long it would take to burn each brand of plate. For Chinet it took 16.65 seconds, Hefty it took 2.4 seconds, for Dixie it took 9.4 seconds, and for Great Value it took 12.38 seconds. Graph below. We tested Price by going to one store website and collecting prices of each time brand of plate. The price of Chinet was 5.69, for Dixie it was 2.99, for Hefty it was, and for Great Value the price was 3.97. For this trial we tested which had the highest price out of all the types of paper plates. Graph Below. For the strength of paper plates we used washers. Each of the paper plates held about 5 washers. Chinet held 22 washers which is 8.88 grams, Dixie held 15 washers which is 5.55 grams, Hefty held 30 washers which is 11.1 grams, Great Value held 14 washers which held 5.18 grams. What you see here is are graph that shows all are data for each paper plate. Graph below.

For paper plates we did a variety different experiments. Then we found a lot of different information. are opinion on which plate is best would be Chinet the only downfall for Chinet is that is more expensive but otherwise for our tests it was really good the only ones it lost were price and strength but for strength it was 2 best.

The Bad And Good Qualities of Paper Towel Paper towels. They’re the most handy and reliable source to clean up small household messes. But when you watch the commercials of the big name brands, are they really telling the truth about topics such as strength, durability, absorbency, and unit price? In the tests we have conducted, we have tested all of the topics listed above to inform people of the best paper towel brand for the lowest price per roll.

Which Brand is the Strongest?

When you or your families are out buying the groceries and you happen to wander into the paper towel aisle, you might find that almost every brand claims they have the strongest product. So how do you decide which one is really the strongest? In a group experiment we tested just how much a piece of paper towel could take. We were given four different brands to test, White Cloud, Great Value, Decorator Towels and Bounty Basic. We started our test by simply planning it out.

Steps to find strength of a piece of paper towel 1. Place 2 chairs about 8-10 inches apart from each other. Make sure the chairs are identical. 2. Place 1 sheet of paper towel between the 2 chairs(the long way). Label the sheets so you know which one you are testing. 3. Tape the sides of the sheet to the chairs. Make sure that the sheet is straight. 4. Using an eyedropper place 10 drops of regular water on the center of the sheet. Don’t stop adding the drops if it starts leaking through. 5. Place “washer weights” in the center of the sheet. Count how many are on the sheet until the sheet breaks. 6. Record the number of weights that were on the towel when it broke. Complete 3 trials for each brand of paper towel. 7. Evaluate the results. Our Team completed the steps above and evaluated the data collected. While we were evaluating our data we noticed that not as popular brands seemed to be false advertising. Our data shows that Bounty Basic came in first with an average of nineteen weights, next was Great Value with fourteen weights, and then White cloud with twelve weights, and lastly, Decorator Towels with an average of six weights (shown in the graph below). The conclusion to this test was that Bounty Basic is in fact the strongest Out of the four brands, White Cloud, Great Value, Decorator Towels and Bounty Basic.(See graph below).

Which Brand is The Most Absorbent? When watching paper towel commercials, you probably have noticed that in the commercials, the paper towel always seems to perfectly clean the mess up without leaving anything residue behind and not dripping at all. It claims that it doesn’t drip until it gets completely drenched with the material it absorbs, but how much of a material does the paper towel actually absorb? With a group experiment, we found that from four brands, White Cloud, Great Value, Decorator Towels, and Bounty, which one is the most absorbent or in other words, we found out how many drops of water a paper towel could take until it dripped. Below are the steps we took:

Steps to find absorbency of paper towel 1. Place 2 chairs about 8-10 inches apart from each other. Make sure the chairs are identical. 2. Place 1 sheet of paper towel between the chairs( the long way). Neatly tape the sides of the sheet to the chair. 3. Use eyedropper to drop water on the center of the paper towel. 4. Count drops of water placed on the sheet until it it is soaked through the towel and is dripping on the floor. 5. Record the number of drops. 6. Complete 3 trials for each brand of paper towel. 7. Evaluate the results. The data we have collected was somewhat spread out, for the White Cloud towel had an average of 74 drops, Great Value and Decorator Towels had an average of 17 drops, and Bounty Basic had an average of 3 drops, as shown in the graph provided below.

Which Brand is the most durable? Have you notice when you clean the paper towel rips easy? Well we put together a project on which has the most durability. We had four easy steps on how we figured out which one was the most durable. Once again we had four different brands of paper towel, white Cloud, Great Value, Decorator Towels, and Bounty Basic.

Steps to find the durability of a paper towel 1. Tape four corners of a piece of paper towel to a table. make sure the table is totally dry. 2. Using a piece of sandpaper, find a spot in the middle if the sheet to rub and rub the sandpaper back and forth against the sheet. 3. While you rub the sandpaper to the paper towel make sure you count how takes until it rips.

many rubes it

4. Record all of you data. 5. Complete three trials for each brand of paper towel. 6. Evaluate your data. The data we collected was very clustered; it never went above 7 and clustered around that area. White Cloud and Great Value had an average of 4 swipes of sandpaper until it ripped,

Decorator Towels had an average of 2 swipes until it ripped, and lastly, Bounty Basic had an average of 3 swipes until it ripped.(See graph below.)

Which Brand has the lowest Unit Price? Now all of these qualities do shed some light on which paper towel brands have the most quality, but you may be thinking about the price; what are the unit prices (price per roll) of the listed brands? In the last group experiment, we found the unit price for each brand; this would tell if you’re really getting your moneys worth for the quality of the paper towels. We generally searched each brand website for the price and divided that number by the typical amount of rolls of paper towels in each package. This would give us the unit price or price per roll. The results were not too spread out, the only major difference was 76 cents. White Cloud has a unit price of 83 cents per roll, Decorator Towels have a unit price of 74 cents per roll, and Great Value and Bounty Basic had the same unit price at $1.50 per roll.( See graph below.)

Conclusion Due to the data we have collected from the experiments conducted, we have concluded that the White Cloud brand is the best paper towel brand. It has a lower unit price in comparison to the other brands, and shows good results on the other tests. It shows that it has the best absorbency, durability, but not the most strenght. So in conclusion, the White Cloud paper towel brand is the best because of it’s high quality and lower price.

Paper Towels When you’re shopping, do you ever wonder what product you will get the most bang for your buck on? We tested what paper towel is the best. Based upon strength, absorbency, streaking and softness. In the following will be our results. Strength: To test strength, we taped paper towel to two chairs that were five inches apart. Then we put five drops of water in the center of each brand of paper towel; after our team put as many

washers as possible in the center of the paper towel to test the strength. We kept adding washers until the paper towel broke. We counted the washers and then repeated this for each brand of paper towels. After all of the trials, we found that Bounty is the strongest overall, but with Great Value as a close second, Decorative Towel as a third and White Cloud as the worst out of all four. (See graph)

Absorbency: We tested absorbency by taping a paper towel between two chairs that were five inches apart. Our team proceeded to add drops of water to the center of the paper towel until it started to drip. After we recorded how many drops it had absorbed and repeated this one more time. After all the tests were concluded, Great Value took first by a landslide! It absorbed a remarkable

400-450 drops water before it dripped! White Cloud took second with only half the amount of drops of Great Value (250), the Decorative Towel with half of White Clouds amount (150) and Bounty with half the amount of Decorative Towels! (50) (See graph at top left)

Softness: Instead of doing a test for softness, we took a survey of the teachers and some students at Parkview Middle School. We took all of the paper towels ,and labeled each of them A, B, C and D, so people that took the survey did not know the brand name. Surprisingly, most of the people thought beforehand that Bounty would be the softest, but ended up choosing White Cloud as the softest, with 63% of peoples favorite.

Streaking: We tested streaking by spraying Windex on a dirty window and seeing which paper towel would leave the most streaks. We sprayed one spritz of cleaner once on a window, and then wiped in a circle four times with each brand of paper towel. We then quickly took a picture of the streaks left over. We repeated this twice for each towel. Bounty left the most streaks behind, and White Cloud left the least streaks.

Which brand tested the Best? After reviewing all of our data, we have concluded that the brand of paper towel you buy should be based upon your lifestyle. If you have a messy life with a lot of tough messes to clean up and you’re looking for strength, Bounty will be your best choice. But, if you're looking for something more absorbent and softer Great Value or White Cloud would be your best option. If you’re having a party, Decorative Towel would be the best for you. It is rather soft and has pretty designs. We believe that Decorative Towel has the best presentation. Overall, if you need strength and absorbency, Great Value will be your best option. It came in a close second for strength and was by far the most absorbent.
