Connect, Commit and Create in 2008

JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2008 PAGE - 2

JUNE - JULY - AUGUST 2008

That is why our theme of Connect - Commit - Create is also a personal process.

Rev. Sydney Magill-Lindquist

Dear Family; Summer is filled with fun, sun and activities. Our theme this year of Connect-Commit- Create in 2008 continues on as well. As we bathe in the success of our first Environmental Fair and prepare for the grandest Spiritual Event of the year, The World Day of Prayer, in September, let’s pause a moment to take a snap shot or what is really at work here. In June we look a the Power of One a year later. It only takes the decision of one person to put their energy into a idea to create a different outcome. How many of us feel powerless when we turn on the news. Just a visit to the gas station alone can instill a sense of hopelessness.

When we connect with God and each other we find that hopelessness disappears. We are never alone and there is support for you. It may come to you through your personal prayer time or through someone else. When we commit ourselves to find new and more creative ways to fulfill our needs, unexpected miracles happen. A prime example of this came to Kelly Norman when she was led to organize our Environmental Fair. She found a job doing what she loves to do through the contacts she made in organizing our event. God knows even before we ask. All that we need to do is take the time to listen, then act. God is guiding our church too. We have come a long way in just one years time. We prayed then acted on our guidance beginning with the Power of One program. One year later we can see a huge difference in our community. As you look through these pages you can see for yourselves. With God in charge, everything becomes possible. Blessings,

From Our Board President: Our unified intention has now put the financial deficit of 2007 behind us Jeff Gibson and vastly improved our financial state, especially when compared to this same time last year. Successful also describes our first Unity in Community Environmental Fair fund raiser which netted over $2000. Together with Spirit we have turned around financially and the threshold to full solvency is in sight. Now is the time to cross that threshold by committing as much to the ongoing financial stability of Unity of Gainesville as we have to its financial recovery. As we continue with more fundraisers, individual tithing remains the primary source of income for Unity of Gainesville. The subject of tithing often elicits an intense reaction. What about you? Do you react with judgment of it’s requirements or do you respond with knowingness of its benefits? Or have you not even considered it either way? Whatever your Continued on page 9

fter much consideration, we have decided to change our Front Office hours. Although Christin Gonzales I will be in the office the same numFront Office Mgr. ber of hours each week, the new hours will allow us to accommodate early deliveries as well as reduce energy costs, as it will be cooler in the mornings. Since we are committed to family here at Unity, the new hours will also allow me to work around my daughter’s schedule as she will be starting school soon. We are always in need of volunteers in the front office. Volunteers do not have to have any experience, just a willingness to help with answering the phone, folding bulletins and other things that may need to be done. I will be on vacation June 23rd -26th. If you can help in the office while I am on vacation, or at any other time, please call me at 770/534-0949. All help is greatly appreciated. Have a great Summer! World Day of Prayer Events It’s time to start making plans... The World Day of Prayer is coming up on September 11th and it’s time to start creating your alcove for prayer. What do you feel drawn to create this year? Alcoves for the environment, for children, for peace, for world leaders have been the inspiration in past years. Where would you like to focus the Remembering Alcove 2007 prayers of this congregation as we join with Silent Unity, the Association of Unity Churches and Unity churches around the planet in 24 hours of continuMatt Miller helps Iris Arias on her alcove ous prayer in 2008? If you have a prayer idea and would either like to sponsor an alcove or are available to help create, set up or tear down we need your help. Our first planning meeting is Sunday, June 22nd after church in the sanctuary. Get your coffee and join us as we create the most fabulous prayer event in the history of Unity of Gainesville. Planning Meetings Sunday, June 8 & August 17 after church. Please contact Sydney at the church for alcove details this year.

Isn’t it time for...

UNITY?

Creating Unity in North Georgia Peace Flag Project In a spring concert in March of 2007 at our nation’s capital, Peace Troubadour, James Twyman laid out his cloth of peace for an hour on the mall in Washington, D.C. This cloth is made up of pieces of fabric that were created by thousands of people around the world, all praying for peace. When the cloth was removed an hour later, the National Park Service found that they had a Peace Symbol emblazoned on the grass. When asked how the cloth was treated the answer was prayer.

Can we create the same miracle here? Imagine different groups of faith, interests, and cultures coming together to create our own Flag of Peace. On Thursday, September 11th, during our World Day of Prayer, we will assemble and display all of the Flags of Peace in one large Peace Sign. This will be a moment of connection where churches and other groups and individuals will come together and pray for peace.

We make it easy for you... Each participating group will receive an information packet, fabric pieces, and instructions. Each packet makes one flag. Please have your fabric pieces completed and returned to your group leader prior to August 3, 2008. Each center will return their packet as a whole to Unity of Gainesville the week of August 10th (no later than August 17th). For more information contact Jere’ McMahan at 770-532-3187

2008 Peace Concert September 11th, 2008 - 7:00 PM After the Peace Flag Ceremony we will host a Peace Concert on our Fellowship Patio. You can relax enjoy the Peace and Fellowship and listen to the best of the New Thought Musicians in North Georgia.

JUNE - JULY - AUGUST

You are more powerful than you think. You have the power to change your life, and you have the power to change this church. Welcome to The Power of One. The Power of One is a unique program to share the light we call Unity of Gainesville with other seekers, one person at a time. Churches grow through individual connections between people. In our fast-paced lives, we all look for a place to pray, meditate, express creatively, and where we can step back, relax and find peace. You are an important part of Unity of Gainesville. You have found a spiritual center of joy and peace here. Unity of Gainesville is where you connect with God, and where God connects with you. Now that you have found it, we ask you to share it.

Here is what we ask you to do: 1. Make a decision to join the Power of One Campaign and sign the the Covenant Book. 2. Personally invite at least one new person to church 3. Once that person comes, greet them at the door and make them feel welcome. 4. Stay with that person and introduce them to our family and show them that you care. 5. The week after they visit the church, call them and thank them for coming. Invite them back. A followup phone call can mean so much. Remember, this is your opportunity to not just help our church grow; this is your opportunity to make a new friend. Make your commitment today! Sign the Covenant Book and let’s all work together to grow this church.

Family Ministry News

This summer we offer our second annual Summer Camp of the Spirit. Camp will take place the week of June 16th - 20th, and do we have lots of fun in store! The cost is $80 for the week, and camp is open to children from age 5-11. Each child needs to bring a sack lunch and we will provide snacks and drinks. Each day will offer different opportunities for fun!

Summer Hiatus for the Youth of Unity Summer brings a change not only with the season but changes in the lives of our Youth of Unity as we take on summer jobs and vacation. We have 3 members of our group graduating. Cassandra, Michael and Stephen have all turned 18 and will be graduating out of Youth of Unity. We will be holding a graduation ceremony on Sunday, June 8th during the second service. We would have held this later if we had been able to attend Summer Connections. This year that is not possible. After graduation we will be on hiatus until August 3rd. The donations, that so many of you have generously given, will still be used. We now have plenty of time to fund raise for the Fall Rally. This summer we will be regrouping, with an eye on expansion of our group. You will notice some jars around church. An easy fund raiser for us is a ‘Common Cent$ for Y.O.U.’. Just drop your change into a jar and it will go into our Rally Fund. We are also working on an idea for a Youth Service, with music and meditation led by the Y.O.U. Join us on Sunday, June 8th to celebrate our new graduates.

What you mean to say comes out all wrong? Whether in conversation with your spouse, your children, or at work, this class will give you the tools to improve the flow of information in your conversation as it helps to resolve differences peacefully. Chakra and Aura Balancing Class Continues Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:30 PM in the WEB Join Tracy Wyrick as this class continues its last 4 weeks in a journey of self-discovery. Chakras are the key energy centers of the body that govern our spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical well being. They are the gateways to realization, growth, universal connections, and good health. The aura is the electromagnetic field surrounding the human body. It mirrors your current perceptions of these different levels. The class provides you with the tools to awaken and balance your subtle energy system that connects you to the Universal spiritual dimension, and is open for you to join in anytime.

Class Fee: $10 per class

What the Bible Says about Healing Led by Kay Weeks and Debbie Loveless Monday Nights beginning August 4th - October 20th 6:30 - 9:00 PM Fatigue. Depression. Arthritis. Heart disease. Diabetes. "ADD/ADHD." Allergies...Are you and your family tired of feeling less than your best? Do you struggle with your weight? Are you looking for better health? Many of us may not realize what the Bible says about our diet and nutrition. The guidelines in the Bible show us how to live and eat in ways that will give us more vigor and strength. Rex Russell, M.D., through use of the laws in scripture, has shown that astounding measures of health are available to those who are open to follow these guidelines. Based on the book by Rex Russell, you will discover the Three Biblical Principles that will Revolutionize Your Diet, Your Health, and Your Outlook on Life. Cost: $50 for series (includes book and materials)

A Course In Miracles June 24th, July 22nd and August 26th at 6:00 PM Our study of A Course In Miracles Textbook the fourth Sunday of each month is led by Jim Brown. A Course in Miracles is a set of three books. The Course as a whole sets forth a curriculum for mind training. It emphasizes application rather than theory. Its preface states, "Although Christian in statement, the Course deals with universal spiritual themes." It presents a carefully planned spiritual training program, intended to help us remember our true Identity as God's perfect creation, through the means of forgiveness practiced in our daily relations.

On hiatus for the summer will be back in the fall

Prosperity Report Continued from page 2 position, give yourself the gift of taking the time to truly explore the principle of tithing and its benefits for yourself. I personally recommend the books The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity by Edwene Gaines and Open Your Mind to Prosperity by Catherine Ponder. Both are available in our New Journeys Bookstore. What else are you really giving to when you tithe to Unity of Gainesville? Tithing is acknowledging God as our source and celebration of our abundance. And it’s more. A tithe to Unity of Gainesville isn’t just to cover overhead and retire debt. It is to fund our group mission of “creating a loving supportive environment for individual spiritual unfoldment”. For me I absolutely know the difference Unity of Gainesville has to offer. Unity of Gainesville is a place where I am NOT a worthless sinner. God is Love rather than Judgment. Expanding my consciousness is the norm, and I can get a hug anytime I want one. When I tithe of my time, talent and treasure to Unity of Gainesville I am honoring God as my source, participating in our group mission and I am supporting my personal mission of preserving this “different” place. I know that somewhere out there there are others just like me looking for a place just like this, and I want it here for them to find.

he touched us all. His funeral was in April 2007, and just recently Sydney conducted the service to lay his ashes to rest at the beautiful military cemetery in Canton. Prior to leaving for England, Phil’s son Eric sent us a $500 check to finish a much needed project. Phil never met a stranger and when his family asked what the church needed in April of 2007 the first thought was a patio between the WEB and the church building to serve as our fellowship area, since we have no room for a Fellowship hall at present. We are looking at costs for pavers. Fellowship and Phil just always went together.

It has been a long journey since we were given a double-wide building to house our Education Departments. Our Children’s Church is getting ready to use it for Summer Camp. The beautiful chakras that Anna Andes, our Teen Director painted on the Teem Room is now the perfect surroundings for our Chakra and Aura Balancing Class. This building is well used and much loved. Recently some final bills were submitted by those that have put many loving hours into the building and side walks. Our last bills total: $250

Next Generation Unity takes on our Playground: When we initial did fund raising for our playground it was always with the idea of expanding to accommodate both our youngest children and older children as well. Thanks to Jere’ McMahan we now have a picnic table where can parents sit to visit and watch their children, however not much has happened since 2004 since we installed our current playground. Our Next Generation Unity has stepped up to take over that area of our grounds. These young parents are intentional in having our grounds accommodate families with children of all ages. Watch for further activities to support the repair and expansion of this important family area.
