Richard Rodney Bennett A COLLOQUY WITH GOD for SATB chorus with piano accompaniment Sir Thomas Browne (1605–1682) always used this, his own poem, as a ‘dormitive’ to lull himself to sleep. The composer is grateful to his sister, Meg Peacocke, for her help in editing the poem.

John Duggan Ave verum Ave verum was commissioned early in 2011 by Edward Rowntree for the birthday of his father, John Rowntree, director of music at Douai Abbey in the UK. My aim was to write a piece both short and simple, suitable for regular liturgical use. There are, of course, many wonderful settings of this text already, not least those by William Byrd and Edward Elgar, both of which I sang as a boy. In this instance I felt their presence as a fellowship and, having their music in my head while writing, I was encouraged rather than daunted. In fact, if you listen with this in mind, you may hear a phrase or two in homage to the great masters‌

Dedicated to Her Majesty The Queen, in the year of her Diamond Jubilee. Commissioned by the Dean and Chapter of St Paul’s Cathedral in celebration of the tercentenary. First performance on 26th September 2012 at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, by the Choir of St Paul’s Cathedral accompanied by Simon Johnson (organ), conducted by Andrew Carwood. Duration: c. 7 minutes Score on sale: Order No. CH79266 THE WHISPERING GALLERY Text by Sir Andrew Motion

LY E N C O AN E M R I could as well have walked from anywhere;R O O the path from every parish climbs to pass C through these west doors, and F heart S everyRthirsting in these soft-lapping shadows drinks its fill. L E A I entered in. My footsteps found P the way S selfhood of pilgrimage where Uin natureINslips disappears and everything its bounds: R hard potter’s clay E turned fluid as the air; E S highP marbleU arches vaulted into cloud; E floating and over me in weightless stone R– a telescope that flashed its fire Nthe dome I O L toFblaze on heaven blazing back to earth. N the dome. I touched the turning sky. O OTII climbed watched the surf of London break below. in the gallery beneath, I heard N And Wren speak his mind along three centuries: I walked from Clerkenwell to Ludgate Hill and saw the great cathedral anchored there – the parish church of empire as it was, the parish church of England as it is.

I breathed in dust, then breathed it out as prayer made visible to God and human kind. I sculpted light to show the shape of faith. I ordered space to touch eternity. NOVELLO 133

Salvator Mundi: Greater Love was commissioned by the Swansea Festival and premiered by Côrdydd, conducted by Sioned James at St Mary’s Church, Chepstow on 9 October 2011.

Salvator mundi, salva nos, qui per crucem et sanguinem redemisti nos, auxiliare nobis, te deprecamur, Deus noster. Saviour of the world, save us, who through thy cross and blood didst redeem us; help us, we beseech thee, our God.

LY E N C O AN E R RM O O C S RF L E A S NP U I R E E S P U E R N LI FO N O OT N Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

Dyma fy ngorchymyn i; ar i chwi garu eich gilydd, fel y cerais i chwi.

This is my commandment; that ye love one another, as I have loved you. John 15:12

The final soprano solo (bars 53-62) may be sung in English (alternative text provided).

Duration: circa 6 minutes

Dedicated to Dr Manon Williams MVO with great respect and admiration

F Each voice should repeat the boxed passage until bar 61. This should sound 'folk-like' and soloistic. Sing the boxed passage at varying tempi, with rubato and always independently of each other. The effect should be of small waves mixing and interweaving at a coastline. Singers should drop 'in' and 'out' of the texture at will.
