ACT III Scene 1 (The next two scenes are played in front of the same background: green, steeply rising mountains. In Scene 1, a wooden, two-storied farm house with a porch, at the left, is the only structure. It is not visible during the first part of the scene, the conversation between Brown and Douglass taking place at the right side among large rocks in front of a curtain, which is raised when Oliver and Green walk over to the farm house. It is October, 1859. The farm house is located in Maryland, five miles from Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Douglass has just arrived, accompanied by Dangerfield Newby, a black man in his forties. They are welcomed by Brown and Oliver.)

(A curtain rises and we see the farmhouse in cross-section, revealing its interior. Martha is watching from the porch; she is many months pregnant. Clouds are forming; the day gradually becomes darker. Oliver escorts Newby to the farm house, walking quickly and watchfully after getting an all-clear signal from Martha. The two men go inside and greet Martha, who comes in from the porch, and Annie, who has entered from another room.)

In front of it is the spacious armory yard with a flagpole flying the United States flag. The same mountains as before rise steeply behind the scene. John Brown and Oliver lie side by side in the foreground, propped up on blankets. They are both wounded, Oliver mortally. They are surrounded by soldiers under the command of Lt. Stuart, who are protecting them from an angry mob. Brown’s raid has failed; some of his men lie wounded and dead. Dangerfield Newby’s body lies downstage at one side. The townspeople shout and jeer at Brown.)
