he Cougars denied Wilkinson County a fourth consecutive state title in their fifth semifinals appearance in the past six years to advance into the Class A-Pubic finals. Now just one win away from Calhoun County’s fourth title in school history, the Cougars still boast an undefeated record and have no intentions of breaking rhythm now in the finals. Following a week 1 bye, the Cougars have averaged 76 points per game in the postseason. Senior Bryan Smith has been a spark for the offense, a 5-7 guard who has no issue driving hard to the basket to throw up a shot. His overtime performance consisting of 17 points against Wilkinson County helped fuel the come-from-behind victory over the defending champs. Smith can also hit from long range and missed only one free throw in the semifinals, making him a sure bet to create offensive production. Junior Jahmad Wiley and sophomore Tykevious Curry represent other reliable options for the offense to look to. Curry can hit from outside or attack the glass and Wiley can take on defenders close to the basket. The Cougars play an all-out physical style of ball, leaving little room for opposing teams to get an easy break on a possession. The Cougars faced off against finals opponent Treutlen during the regular season, beating the Vikings 79-72. This time around, Calhoun County will continue to apply pressure early to Treutlen by attacking the hoop and playing each man tight with no letting up. A finals victory would grant the Calhoun County senior squad an overall record of 106-15, and give the team its first undefeated season during Marcus Shaw’s 10-year career at Calhoun County.

he Vikings narrowly defeated Irwin County 74-72 to give Treutlen a shot at claiming the school’s first-ever basketball state title in Tyree Coney’s seventh year as head coach. This semifinal win saw Treutlen’s lowest points in a game this postseason with previous scores of 78 and 88, a testimony to how electric the Vikings have been while attacking the basket. This fast-paced offense hits hard and early with multiple players who can really control a game. Junior Kamron Jordan plays physical ball, using his power to drive through defenders to make a shot or force a foul. His five trips to the foul line in the semifinals were the most on the team. Arkavias Lovett provides the Vikings with an intimidating big man who not only snags rebounds but follows through with a shot. Lovett’s presence in the paint helped the senior rise above defenders to snag a rebound and make the gamewinning last-second shot to send Irwin County packing in the semifinals. Junior KaSabian Mitchell is everywhere on the court. Whether it’s weaving through defenders with eyes on the rim or posting up outside and taking a long shot, Mitchell can hit from anywhere. He led the Vikings with 20 points in the semifinals and will continue to be a reliable go-to option for the offense. Two seasons ago, this team went 27-0 during the regular season, only to lose in the quarterfinals of the playoffs in a thrilling overtime game against Macon County. The Vikings followed up with an underwhelming 19-9 season but are now back with an undefeated region record and only one loss during the regular season, and are not looking to add another.
