Centre of hope opens >> ‘Here at Genesis, we all want to change the world. We believe we can.’ CANDYCE KRISHNA
LOCAL pastor’s vision of changing the “little world” which surrounded the community near his church, has given birth to the Marburg Genesis Youth Centre. The youth centre falls under the banner of the Genesis Trust, an outreach ministry of the Norwegian Settler’s Church.
At the official handover on Tuesday, Pastor Trevor Downham told guests about the journey. “Here at Genesis, we all want to change the world. We believe we can. Maybenotthebigworld, butthesmall world that surrounds us,” said Downham. Six years ago, he envisioned a community centre which will serve the Marburg, Merlewood, Bhobhoyi and Mkholombe areas. The youth centre offers a gym, mu-
churches overseas, and a R3,4-million investment from Growthpoint Property enabled the project to be completed. “There is no blessing without sacrifice. This centre is a blessing because so many people made a sacrifice to get involved and be a part of it,” he said. Downham added that he often asked himself if what the Genesis Trust was doing (for the community) was worth it. “It’s great that we got the sponsors and the funding for this cen-
sic programmes, secondary school maths tuition, post-matric life skills which includes applications to tertiary institutions and assistance with tertiary studies to develop leadership potential. “I believe that combining this building with the passion of our Genesis staff and volunteers will make this youth centre a blessing and a great tool for the upliftment of the community around us,” said Downham. Local businesses and sponsors,
tre but are we making a difference?” he asked. He then told guests about a story wherehegavean18-year-oldteenager and his little sister a lift to Gamalakhe one day. “This young man and his sister were waiting outside the church when I picked them up. On the way to Gamalakhe, I asked him about his life and like many he was raising his sister because his parents had died.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

SOUTH Coast man and what he has posted on Facebook, has become the topic for discussion on the social network’s South Coast Reporter page. What shocked many was the fact that the man worked for the Ugu District Municipality. The page was created to report crime, events and to share information with other residents. Recently a warning was posted on the page asking people to becareful when accepting friend requests. “I just wanted to warn people to look through a profile when someone sends a freind request. You should not just accept,” said the Facebook user. Another man said he was disgusted at the photographs posted on the man’s profile. “There was a picture of a man having sex with a goat and others watching. That is against the law,” said a Facebook user. “The picture has been removed but if you browse at the other pictures, you will be shocked.”
A screen grab of the South Coast Reporter Facebook page where locals expressed their feelings about an Ugu employee's obscene profile pictures.
A South Coast mother expressed her horror when she saw a picture of two school girls, in uniform, performing oral sex. “If those girls are under the age of 16, this man is actually distributing child pornography. I hope the municipality acts quickly on this,” she said. Ugu District Municipality was approached for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.
Man charged with kidnapping A 27-YEAR-OLD man appeared in Hibberdene court on Wednesday after he allegedly kidnapped a 23-year-old woman on Monday at about 7am. “The woman was on her way to work and boarded a taxi. She alleges that her ex-boyfriend was in the same taxi and when it stopped, he forced her to go his house and held her there against her will,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. The woman claims he wanted her to end her
relationship with another person. ShethenmanagedtosendanSMStoafriend whom she alerted about the situation. Warrant Officer Patrick Gosling, Constable Travis Dickens and Constable Raphael Smithwick from Port Shepstone Public Order Policing, proceeded to the area where the woman was being held and arrested the man. “The woman was unharmed. >>firstname.lastname@example.org HIBISCUS Coast Municipality (HCM) Mayor, Councillor Cynthia Mqwebu, tabled the draft2014/2015budgetatManzamhlophe Community Hall within ward 5 on Tuesday.
Hibiscus mayor tables budget This is part of the municipality’s aim of getting communities more involved in matters that affect them. CllrMqwebusaidthespecialcouncilsitting in the area was in line with values of transparency and clean governance, and the budget itself was drafted and aligned with the National Development Plan (NDP). For the next financial year, HCM has a capital budget of R137 million and an oper-

ating budget of R668 million which means the overall budget stands at about R805 million. “The main source of funding of the 2014/15capitalbudgetofR137millionisinternally generated funds at R49 million, followed by national government at R47 million and provincial government at R39.9 million,” said Cllr Mqwebu. Property rates make up 46 percent of the internally generated revenue with
service charges and electricity sales coming second at 23 percent. The rest is generated form fines and investments. At 41percent, employee related costs make up the biggest projected expenditure for the next financial year. On rates and other tariff increases, the mayor said a 7.39 percent electricity increase is to be expected from 1 July 2014. “Considering the Eskom increases, the consumer tariff has to be increased to offsettheadditionalbulkpurchasecosts.Given the magnitude of the tariff increase, it
is expected to depress growth in electricity consumption, which will have a negative impact on the municipality’s revenue from electricity,” she said. The proposed rates increase in respect of rateable properties for the 2014/15 financial year is 7 percent. Indigents, in terms of the indigent policyareexemptfrompayingratesifthevalue of the property is less than R320 000. Cllr Mqwebu then appealed to all councillors to work hard to ensure that the municipality gets a clean audit in the 2013/2014 financial year.
Municipality gets new TLBs
>> R26-million has been set aside in to fix roads and related infrastructure. VUSI MTHALANE
MAJOR plans for upgrading the Hibiscus Coast have been included in the 2013 - 2018 Capital Investment Plan. Slum clearance projects, rehabilitation of roads and general facility upgrades are on the cards. This was discussed at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s (HCM) Draft Budget Meeting, held at Manzamhlophe Community Hall on Tuesday. The capital investment plan shows progress and the future plans of the municipality. HCM has indicated that R26-million has been set aside in to fix roads and related infrastructure in the next financial year. The plan includes drain cleaning, road sign replacement, hand-
rail repairs, regravelling and blacktop patching on the P395, a national road. An amount of R1 052 631 has been budgeted for electrification in the Louisiana area. Community health centres have been allocated R24 million while construction and maintenance of sport, recreation and community facilities will receive R14 million. This includes maintenance and upgrades of community halls, taxi ranks and taxi rank ablution facilities. In the past financial year, the municipality spent over R8 million to clear slums in the areas of Mkholombe and Masinenge. According to the plan, a new R18 million clinic is to be built in Hibberdene by the 2016/2017 financial year.

Dr RT Naidoo addressed the meeting saying said that in the process of nation-building, social cohesion is important and is one of the touchstones of fighting poverty, unemployment and inequality. “Divisions of race, class and gender — all these challenges produce a very dangerous society that sees us experiencing violence, verbal and physical attacks, some leaving painful deaths,” said Naidoo.

An example to all of us
Sir, i left my book at home on purpose!
OUR inspirational story on page 1 this week about the Marburg Genesis Youth Centre and the man who brought it about (with the help of others he would like to emphasise), should be an example to all. Here is a man, Pastor Trevor Downham, who has brought about huge change in the lives of people in his very humble way. His mission is simply to make a difference, ‘not in the big world, but in the small world that surrounds us.’ And that he has done in an enormous way, by touching many, many lives at the Genesis Centre, in his ministry. Ifyoulookatpage3youwillseethat he has also just been recognised for his ongoing humanitarian service and dedication to the welfare of the South Coast community. The Lions Club of Port Shepstone nominated him for the 2014 Lion District 410-C Citizen of the Year Award which he was presented with last weekend. And he also received a Louis Halse Fellowship award, which is the highest award in the district, for his contribution to the community. Here Downham, who gave a humble speech, once again encouraged people to focus on being ‘significant rather than successful,’ which is the way he lives his life. His contribution to so many lives at Genesis has been immense, but he makes a point of touching all lives, every day around him with kindness and meaningfulness. We can all learn from this immense man. It is not how important our position, how big the world as he rightly says, but what we can do for the ‘small world’ that surrounds us, just that one person around us. And that will start to make the difference to the big world around us.

Thanks from rugby boys
Thanks Ugu for quick water response
Dear Fever, AS parents of one of the Port Shepstone High, under 15 rugby boys we would like to thank you for your sponsorship in keeping the boys hydrated on their Greytown Rugby Tournament. Thank you, Terry McGovern for the signage on the water carrier PHOTO: SUPPLIED to make it their Welcome relief for rugby boys. own and to Thea Dreyer from Sanlam for the water bottles. I can assure you when we handed it to the coach on Friday before they left, we already noticed some smiles while eagerly looking at it and they even filled the bottles before leaving. Rest assured the water carrier and bottles will grow with the team by replacing the sticker every year. Once again a big thank you! to you both for your support. Dear Fever, YESTERDAY night at 10pm (Monday night) there was no water at our place in Margate, just a short trickle and then just nothing! After a hot and sticky day that was bad news! I phoned Ugu and the lady on the phone responded immediately and she said it might be a burst pipe, as they had not received any report from Margate and the reservoir was full. This morning before 6am the water was back with a lot of spluttering and brown.

Well done Sheppie High ‘father-in-loco’ Dear Fever, WE, Jacques and Herma Vermaak, parents of Ulrich Vermaak, would like to thank Damien Williams forthemannerinwhichhehandledUlrich’srugbyinjury on tour during the past long weekend. We received our first call just after 2pm to inform us that Ulrich had injured himself and that the medics were busy with him and that they would be trans porting him to hospital for precautionary checkups. Damien constantly kept contact with us to
keep us up-dated on what was happening next, throughout all the calls he remained calm, which for me as the mother made me feel at ease and not strike the panic button. Damien is surely an asset to Sheppie High. Thank you, Damien for the very competent, professional and caring manner in which you handled the situation.Youareagreat“father-in-loco”totherugby boys. New hospital pharmacy...will wait and see Dear Fever, PERSONALLY I cannot wait to see the new multimillion upgrade at Port Shepstone Hospital. I go every six months and frequent three departments; the department where I wait for my file is not too bad (this has been part of a previous upgrade); then I go to a clinic that is seriously run-down and in need of basic care, but the very worst is having to go to the pharmacy, which I read has been upgraded. I look forward to seeing this because the old one was nothing short of a disgrace. It was so packed that people could not sit, that if someone coughed the germs literally spluttered all-
over everybody else, the little serving windows/ hatcheswerejammedclosetoeachotherandbesides it being too small and just chaotic it was downright unhygienic because of the size. There are way too many people trying to use this hospitalbecause, probablyasyoureditorialcomment saidpeoplecan’taffordmedicalaidschemes, butalso becauseofthehugecatchmentareathishospitalnow serves. Good that it has been renovated and I am sure I am not the only one who looks forward to better facilities. Mary Wilson Port Shepstone
Good news for the South Coast Dear Fever, HEARTWARMING is what I would call the story in the Fever, last week’s issue of 21 March, about ‘local lad reaches new heights.’ There are so many stories about crime, road accidents and shysters running off with people’s money and so on, that just for once it is a pleasure reading a good-feel story.
Well done former Suid-Natal pupil Ulrich Hechter for making the South Coast and your school proud, and good luck in all that you do in future. We are proud that young people like you come from our ‘little’ part of the world. Nancy Gray Southport

Probe in local
Dear Fever, IN 2013, the South Coast Fever was approached by a parent requesting a “probe” into the mismanagement and theft of funds at a local school be made public. The parent was concerned that the Department of Education and School Governing Body (SGB) was sweeping the issue under the carpet and that parents have a right to know.
The Governing Body Chairperson gave his word that a report will be forthcoming. To date no information regarding this serious incident has been shared with parents and other stakeholders in the community. Why is the Department of Education harbouring a criminal and why is the Governing Body who were elected by parents protecting the
suspect. To all parents on the South Coast, it could have been your money that was stolen, your child may have been disadvantaged to important resources as the funds intended for that purpose was stolen. To the community, you have always assisted in raising funds in local schools, you deserve to know if your money was stolen. I know for a fact that the parent
A disgrace...Tweni’s dirty scum Dear Fever, LATELY the seawater at Umtentweni beach water has been spoilt by this dirty froth or scum shall I call it? Thishasbeenthecaseforthelastcouple of months, more often than not and always after rain. I would hazard a guess it comes down the river which flows into Tweni beach, but still is there an excuse for this - well perhaps there is since this is not a Blue Flag beach and therefore HCM do not have to care about it? Well there are plenty of residents who docareaboutTwenibeachandwouldlike it to be cleaned please. And there are holidaymakers who use this beach so they should also count even
if locals don’t! WhileIam atitwouldthemunicipality like to pay for my doctor’s bill for the ear infection I picked up from swimming in the dirty water? AndbythewayIwillbeforwardingthe next doctor’s bill to HCM for an infection which I have no doubt is caused by this dirty froth. This weekend was such lovely weather, that I decided to give Tweni another chance (despite the recent infection). With petrol costing so much more it makes a difference having to nip down to Umzumbe, which is always clean, just for a quick swim, but it was only to discover the scum was there, but only after I had
actually got into the water. The water doesn’t look too bad until you are in it and catch some of the scum in your hand and then watch the bubbles burst and see the ‘brown’ in your hands. I would like to know, can some one perhaps tell me, who do I ask? Are we Tweni residents just expected toputupwithbrownfrothwhichisprobablycontaminatedwithe-colijustbecause we are not on the list for a Blue Flag beach? Is there someone out there who cares? Is there someone at HCM who looks after beaches who can answer this letter please? Sarah Taylor Umtentweni
approached the Fever and not any other newspaper because of your record in assisting the community and the bold, brave journalism your paper is known for. I trust that the SGB Chairperson and the Department of Education will make good on their promise to inform the community. Parents, SGB elections will be held soon. Please choose trustworthy, skilled and committed people
that will safeguard the interest of the community to represent you as the decisions made by Governing Body directly affect you and your child. To the accused, please note you have stolen children’s money. You may get away from the law but not from your conscience. South Coast Parent Port Shepstone

How do I fight for my marriage? Dear Doctor Nash, It was just four and a half years ago when I was going through a divorce that I met my present husband. We had a one night stand and I fell pregnant! I was tested and yes it was his child and I moved in with him together with my two children. It was an up and down marriage, I was depressed, and then I found out that he was having an affair! I had to change and I did but I know that he still wants this other
woman. I want to stay and make the marriage succeed, but at present he says that he wants to leave, that there is no spark in the marriage. My children still see him as “dad”. The affair has been going on for nearly two years as far as I can make out, and he has not left me yet, maybe the other woman, who is divorced, does not want to marry him. I want my marriage to work but how do I go about it? What do I do? How do I fight for my marriage and does he want me or is he going to leave no matter what? Help please for a desperate wife. Dear Desperate Wife, My heart goes out to you, but so often we write our own futures! You two got off to a bad start and it has continued on the same path, to change it will demand a concerted effort. In other words each one of you will have to make your own individual decision and hopefully those decisions will be the same. They should be because you are married and each of you have made a promise, a promise before Jehovah GOD as well as to each other and if you continue to break these promises you will destroy not only yourselves but also the children who depend upon you. The mess you are in will not easily be solved just between you. I strongly suggest that you seek help from a clinical psychologist experienced in these matters, who is also a bible student. I wish you well. If I can help further, please phone me.
What do I do? I am a lost soul.
DearDoctorNash,IcamedownherefromJohannesburg after the break up of a relationship that I had there for the last three years. I like home, living here. I am alone and see no one during the week which means I am a lonely man. I do not open letters or answer the telephone. TV is just a noise. Everything is just a huge effort. I put things down and do not know where they are. Everything is just a huge effort. I live in a complex but do not have the initiative or energy to make contacts. I know that I am not doing the right thing, butthenwhatistherightthingforamansuch as I? By trade I am pharmacist and that pays for my living expenses, but what about my life? Where to I go? What do I do? I am a lost soul. M.J. Dear M.J. Your letter is a very sad one to read.
Your life seems to have changed after the break up of your relationship in Johannesburg. What went wrong when it was such an important part of your life? It certainly seems to have formed a key in your life. Anyway what is done is done but have you actually come to terms with it? I think you need to re-evaluate that relationship and sort it out and the fact that it is over. You have to start a new life my friend, which I am sure you know that, but you have not managed to do it. I do not know what your interests in life are, and I get the feeling that you have lost touch with your feelings and interests. Get off your rear end MJ. Join a gym, date a customer, put an advertisement in the newspaper,Jointhelatestnudistcolony, anything, but do change your present dreary life style before it kills you.

‘A lick of paint can do wonders’ A WITTY gent recently suggested the “The South Coast is like an old trophy that needs a good old fashioned polishing up”. There is merit in his remark and two weeks ago after Ugu South Coast Tourism promoted the Greater South Coast at the Cape Getaway Show, I took our marketing and events team around Stellenbosch to take in the presentation of the town within the context of the Winelands District. What is patently clear is that their municipality, university and
owners of residential and commercial buildings have an immense pride in the design and look of their properties. The non conflicting aspects of modern design with the abundance of heritage buildings makes for a recipe for an exceptionally well presented urban area- hence its continued appeal as a tourist destination. We found scant evidence of buildings that had not had a recent coat of paint (usually white) and even in the less affluent areas (e.g. Cloetesville) buildings displayed a
property that looks a little shabby, please consider repainting your building- it is amazing how an area can revitalise itself by simply looking pristine. Stellenbosch continually pays attention to this requirement and it is so noticeable and inspiring. Our trophy is impressive so please assist in playing a role in getting it polished and having pride of place within South Africa’s attractions cabinet. Our local economy depends on it. Have a colourful week in Paradise.
challenge of upgrading public facilities and amenities- something that is vital if we are to be competitive. The private sector also needs to play its part in any revival of our urban aesthetics. Not all blame can be laid at the door of the government. Success stories for destinations depends of how the local government AND the private sector join forces to ensure that public spaces and the built landscapes meld into one pleasing and user friendly unit. So if you are an owner of a
communal sense of pride with blocks of flats well maintained and colourful. Sadly I am not sure if we can say the same about all our urban and peri urban areas- hence the old trophy analogy. We have to accept that the majority of our buildings, apartment blocks and holiday properties are privately owned and whilst the most are well maintained, it is the pockets of lesser maintained buildings that drag the reputation of our destination down. The municipalities have the
Ramsgate to host KZN’s Worldwide ‘Knit in Public Day’ WORLDWIDE Knit in Public Day takes place each year in June and this year Ramsgate will be celebrating this worthy event on the 14 and 15 June. Whilst traditionally Worldwide Knit in Public Day is a one day event, it has grown into a week long celebration around the world. Ramsgate’s two-day event also includes other forms of artistic expression such as crocheting and macrame and other fibre arts. Started in 2005 by Danielle Landes, the event aims to raise awareness of this age old craft and to serve as a way to bring communities together – to teach, learn and share their skills and use knit-
ting as a common ground to communicate. The organisers would also like to appeal to communities in the rural areas to get involved and request that any persons able to assist in this way contact them. Oneoftheratherquirkygoalsinclude `Yarn Bombing’. Yarn Bombing effectively means that the venue – The Waffle House – will be `all yarned out’ adding fun and colour to the whole event. The importance of getting good financial advice GOOD financial advice from a qualified professional can significantly improve your peace of mind and chances of success as you battle through economic challenges this year. George Cruickshank and Anitha Bechoo, Financial Advisers at Sanlam in Port Shepstone, says the good news is that you don’t have to battle the financial land-
scape alone. “Professional financial advice can give you a different perspective on your financial challenges and on how to achieve your financial dreams – so that you can make practical decisions taking into account your shortterm and long-term realities and goals.” Apart from assistance with budgeting, and advice on how to
reduce your debt, a qualified adviser can guide you to plan for unforeseen events and help you put a plan in place to protect yourself and your family from financial ruin when disaster strikes. With the rapidly escalating cost of living, South Africans have to start saving earlier and smarter to ensure financial independence

29 c breeze Preowned cars...the best service March 28, 2014
>> At Auto Exec a car is matched to a client based on all the special requirements
Looking to buy a pre-owned vehcile? Visit Fred van Zyl (left) and Bennie Badenhorst of Auto Exec in Port Shepstone. PORT Shepstone Auto Exec has been supplying residents of the coast with preownedcarsforthelastdecade.Thecarsales enterprise comprises the buying and selling of many different makes of vehicles. The staff are driven by customer satisfaction and the need to sell cars that they themselves would buy. Bennie Badenhorst left a desk job in the corporate world for something more challenging. Always having been a people-person, Badenhorst decided that car sales
would provide him with a sufficient platform to engage clientele on a one on one basis. “I have a passion for dealing with people,” says Badenhorst. He finds matching a cartoabuyerisextremelysatisfyingandnot something easily done. At Auto Exec a car is matched to a client based on use be it commercial or private, on mileage done per month and on price range. Badenhorst also takes into account the size of the buyer’s family, preferred make and fuel consumption.
Having a distinct love for the Mercedes Benz, Badenhorst, prefers to sell this make as he maintains its reliability is unchallenged. He recalls a day in which he sold a Mercedes Benz C180 kompressor and felt a twinge of jealousy as the buyer drove off in thecrèmedelacrèmeofthemotoringworld. Clients drive away in the cars they’re born to drive. He maintains that customer satisfaction is paramount to him and his colleagues at Auto Exec - supplied.

>> “You can run until you’re 80,” says Mathebula FEVER REPORTER
Pardon Mathebula has been mentoring new recruits for the Striders in an effort to bring to life the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Mathebula joined the runners in 2005 and completed his first Comrades at the age of 60. He has now completed a total of seven Comrades and plans to keep on running for as long as he can. “You can run until you’re 80,” says Mathebula. He is proud of the accomplishments of Fundiso Mvunguse who also started running later in life. Mvunguse claims that running is an
anti-aging sport, good for the body and mind. “These younger ones are always carrying plastic bags from the doctor because they are unfit,” says Mvunguse. Touching on the subject of childhood obesity, he is firm in his belief that running leads to a healthier and longer life. Mvunguse has run a total of five Comrades and takes his training, underthewatchfuleyeofMathebula, very seriously. NewtotheStriders, havingjoinedin January2014,isZandeleDunywa.She had no running experience before 2014 but went on to complete the Pietermaritzburg Marathon in 13th place amongst a total of over 7000 entrants.
Dunywa has found a passion for running and will be competing in next year’s marathon with her fellow striders. Her reasons for joining are twofold; she sees it as a more productive enterprise than sitting home and watching television and she feels it’s a great opportunity to keep fit. The Striders hold their time trials every Wednesday evening at 5:30 pm. Anyone with any queries about joining can visit the clubhouse and get to know the runners and the sport in general. The South Coast Striders’ clubhouse is situatedinEdwardDriveinUvongo,on the riverside, inland from the Uvongo Bowling Greens.
