Facts about dental disease Geriatric animals aren’t necessarily too old for oral work

E

very time I visit the dentist office I see information about the effects of dental disease on our health. I am sure we all appreciate how our dental health can directly influence our physical well being. It is no surprise then that the same is true for our pets. Unfortunately, as the pets age, veterinarians find clients are less and less likely to consider having dental disease treated. Recently we have seen many cases of geriatric pets with severe dental disease who were not treated either because the owners felt that the age of the pet prohibited anesthesia, the pet’s other health problems made anesthesia and treatment impossible, or because treatment was not an expense that was appropriate since the pet was old and would probably pass away soon. Meanwhile, as time passed and the patient continued to persevere, despite the dental disease, their overall health was being negatively impacted. These patients suffer from a spiral of illness and physical decline that is essentially a self-fulfilling prophecy. Unfortunately their owners’ decisions are based on some inaccurate data. Here are some facts about geriatrics and dental disease to remember when you are visiting with your veterinarian. • There is no age limit for anesthesia. A thorough evaluation of the patient is always necessary to be sure that they are an anesthetic candidate — 20-year-old cats can be anesthetized, like my cat Gracie!

• Dental disease and dental pain is profoundly debilitating. Cleaning and extraction of diseased teeth can give an older pet that was “slowing down” a new lease on life! • The pain of dental extractions can be readily managed. Veterinarians

have many different pain management techniques available that will help make recovery at home smooth and comfortable. • Don’t get caught up in trying to guess how long your pet is going to live. Instead try to focus on how well

they are going to live. Older pets deserve to be as comfortable and healthy as they can be! ❏ — By J.A. Hass DVM, MS, of Veterinary Care Specialists in Milford. For more information, call 248-6840468, or visit vcsmilford.com.

Dogs Playing Poker event raises funds for local pet pantry Get your dog and join the fun in Milford on June 2 for the Dogs Playing Poker fund-raising event. The event begins at the Historic Milford Power Station at Central Park, and gives ‘players’ (dogs and their family) an opportunity to walk through downtown Milford collecting cards from merchants (and to visit their shops). At the end of the event the players with the best poker hand win prizes. The event raises money for the Pet Pantry at Community Sharing of Milford/Highland. Like the rest of Michigan, Huron Valley has been hit

hard by the economic downturn. Community Sharing, an area food bank, supports families in the Milford and Highland areas. It was the first food bank in Michigan to recognize and respond to the need for family pets to be nourished and cared for during harsh economic times, just like people. The Community Sharing Pet Pantry has aided in preserving the human-animal bond through tough economic times. The Pet Pantry feeds over 500 pets each month. So come to Milford on Saturday, June 2 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to support the cause. ❏
