Ski Season Has Begun

Weather Not Cooperating but Some Runs are Open BY MARK STOWERS 45"''83*5&3 mark.stowers@comcast.net

The calendar says winter but Mother Nature hasn’t been cooperating on making any real snow for local skiers. But that hasn’t stopped the folks at Alpine Valley in White Lake. Office manager Mari Atreo says the ski run opened recently. “It’s a little bit of a slow start but we’re getting there, Atreo said. “We opened once and closed and reopened again Wednesday (12/12) and we’ll go as long as we can. With only a couple of runs open at this point in the season, Alpine Valley has had plenty of

visitors taking turns on them. But when school is out and the holidays hit, Atreo expects more runs to be open and more skiers and snowboarders to be hitting the runs. “The holidays are one of our busiest times as long as the snow is good. We’re hoping the weather will turn around for us, she said. The ski location has been in existence since 1960 and continually makes improvements to its facilities and runs. During the week, a lift ticket is $32 and rentals are $20. Weekend prices are $40 for a lift ticket and $25 for a rental. There are also rental

classes available from group to private to semiprivate beginning at $35 and up. You can find more information at their website, www.skialpinevalley.com or call them at (248) 887-2180. A little further north, you can ski at Mount Holly, www.skimtholly. com, where they have seven chairlifts and 19 trails to choose from. There is also a full service ski shop and two cafeterias on site. Or you can stay on I-75 to Shanty Creek in Bellaire where there is plenty of snow and several specials and events to take part to celebrate the resorts 50th anniversary. OnTheSnow. com’s visitors have rated Shanty Creek as the “Best Downhill Terrain in the Midwest.

Milford Child Receives A Christmas Gift of Life Milford Special Education Teacher and Former Coach Helping Daughter Battle Leukemia It was the first Christmas for newborn Maleena Hill in 2011. But she wasn’t feeling well and her dad, Jeff Hill- Milford High School special education teacher and former head football coach – took her to get checked out. At barely

six weeks old, Maleena was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “We took her in to get her checked out just after Christmas because she was a little fussy, said Hill, a Royal Oak native. “They came back after

But now one year later, Maleena is responding well to treatments and is actually spending more time at home with her mom, Natalie and older

sister Macy. The family is learning to cope with and understand the daily routines and reactions to take when needed. “We know what to expect and everything is not a new thing, Hill said. “We understand what the protocol is now. LAKES AREA NEWS Huron Valley Gift: Hospital Receives “A” Hospital Safety Score

Continued From Page 1A

DMC Huron ValleySinai Hospital in Commerce Township was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by the Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization of large employers dedicated to improving hospital performance. The “A” rating, on a scale of “A” to “F,” was awarded in the latest update to the Hospital Safety Score, which assesses U.S. hospitals on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. This eval-

uation is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is designed to provide the public with information they can use to obtain high quality health care. The Hospital Safety Score uses 26 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to create a single score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe by preventing errors and complications. Individual hospital scores are available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

window of not having any symptoms.” If Maleena passes that time frame symptom free then she will be declared cancer free. “That’s when they officially rule you as cured for childhood leukemia,” Hill said. “Some different cancer groups go as far as 10 years. 2013 has the promise of better things.” And she’s progressing normally in her development as well. “She is completely hitting all of her milestones. She started walking at 11-months,” he said. “She has days where she’s sick from the chemo of the other meds and that’s normal for all this stuff. This Christmas will be interesting because she has to go back for her last major chemo hospitalization on December 26.” The Hills have to be very careful as the treatments weaken Maleena’s ability to fight simple germs as colds and flu. So the family spends a lot of time at home and can’t be more than an hour away from the hospital. “If we go anywhere outside of 45 minutes or an hour’s drive, we have to talk to our hematologist and plan out where hospitals are if we go,” he said. With Maleena’s health a constant, consistent daily battle, Hill gave up his position as Royal

COMMUNITY NEWS Patterson Honors Residents during Q2 Awards Ceremony

MODERN MESSAGES DANCE COMPANY

Modern Messages Dance Company in Highland Township commemorated the season with its 14th annual production of “Christmas held at Huron Valley Milford High School.  The dance pictured is “The Angels Celebrating the Resurrection of Christ. Dancers from left to right: Julianna Maleszyk, Catherine Hechtman, Emma Green, Lily Finn and Kaitlin Roemer.  (PHOTO SUBMITTED BY ROLAND BOTTIGLIA OF MODERN MESSAGES DANCE CO., WWW.MMDCO.ORG)

Oakland County Executive Seeks Donations for Charity Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson has encouraged county employees to donate their old wireless phones, PDAs, accessories and batteries to HopeLineÂŽ, a Verizon Wireless initiative which turns no-longer used cell phones into support for domestic violence victims and survivors. In exchange for the phones and PDAs, HopeLine will contribute to Haven - an Oakland County-based organiza-

tion that provides specialized, comprehensive services in the areas of domestic violence and sexual assault. HopeLine gives donators a way to help prevent domestic violence by donating no-longer used wireless phones and accessories from any service provider in any condition. The phones, once refurbished, can help victims of abuse feel safer and less isolated by giving them a

way to call emergency or support services, employers, family members, and friends. Collection boxes and posters promoting the program are available in employee break rooms in all Oakland County government buildings through Jan. 11, 2013. So far, county employees have donated and shipped five boxes of wireless phones to HopeLine.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson honored three outstanding Oakland County residents with his annual Quality People/ Quality County (Q2) Awards today for their efforts to improve the quality of life of others. This year’s recipients are George Mosher, co-founder of Oakland Community College; Curt Catallo, owner of Union Ad Works and popular restaurants the Clarkston Union, Union Woodshop, and the Vinsetta Garage; and Erica Cale, a Clarkston-area native who at the age of 15 founded Helping Hearts Helping Hands to change the lives of povertystricken children and families in Honduras. “This year’s Q2 recipients are impacting the lives of thousands of people, Patterson said. “They epitomize what the award is all about - having a big vision that has a positive impact on others. George Mosher Nearly five decades ago, George Mosher had a vision of accessible and affordable educational excellence. His pioneering efforts, steady-handed stewardship and unwavering determination have made it possible for OCC to become one of America’s premiere community colleges. Today, OCC is the largest community college in Michigan with five campuses across the county offering 100 two-year degree programs and 45 certificate programs. OCC is surpassed only by the University of Michigan and Wayne State University for enrollment. OCC is a partner of Oakland County’s Department of Economic Development & Community Affairs. It trains and instructs individuals to join the work force in Patterson’s knowledge-based Emerging Sectors and Medical Main Street companies.

Welcome home.

There is no better Christmas gift.

Hiring a pro to stage your home If you’ve ever sold a home, you’re probably familiar with the concept of home staging. Home staging is the art of preparing a home so that it will sell fast and for the right price. This may entail anything from rearranging furniture and eliminating clutter to assisting with repairs and making recommendations to boost the home’s curb appeal. While some sellers may choose to stage their homes themselves, others will hire a professional home stager. If you opt to go this route, make sure you choose the right pro for you. Hiring a professional home stager is no different than hiring an interior designer. You should begin by asking for referrals. Check with friends and relatives and with your real estate agent. Larger real estate companies may have worked with professional home services and may be able

rule, the higher the asking price of your home, the more you can afford to spend for the services of a professional home stager. If you’re asking less than $200,000 for your home, you may want to go with a lower estimate, whereas if you’re asking for a higher price, you may want to go with a higher estimate. Keep in mind the time factor as well. If your home has been sitting on the market over a year, you may want to go with the more expensive professional stager who has a reputation for producing immediate sales. Choosing the right professional home stager takes some work, but it’s worth it. Not only will it help you sell your home fast, but it could boost the asking price of your home and give you more money to spend on your new home.

to provide you with a list of names. Once you have several names in hand, start checking them out. Find out from the Better Business Bureau if any complaints have been lodged against them. Make an appointment and ask to see photos of their work. Find out how quickly the homes they staged sold and ask for a list of referrals, so you can talk to others who have used their services. Finally, get an estimate. Some professional home stagers charge by the hour, while others charge a flat fee. The higher the estimate, the more involved the staging may be. While many professional stagers will just work with what you have, some will clear out everything and bring in rental furniture, requiring you to pay the costs of renting a storage unit and furniture. After you’ve been given an estimate, make some calculations. As a
