he Kroger grocery store at Union Lake and Commerce roads in Commerce Township is hoping that its new fueling station currently under construction will be open no later than the middle of next month. Dale Hollandsworth, consumer communications for Kroger, said he gets positive responses from people every day excited about the new fueling station coming to town. It will have six pumps, including diesel fuel, and will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, Hollandsworth said. Plus, there will be benefits to doing both your shopping and filling up your car at the new fueling station. “Shopping at Kroger, you can take up to $1 per gallon off your fuel purchases,” Hollandsworth said.

The Kroger fueling station will become the fifth in Oakland County, with other locations in Milford, Davisburg, South Lyon and Lake Orion. There are currently 49 Kroger fueling stations in Michigan, according to Hollandsworth. Kroger typically hires between five and seven new employees to staff its new fueling stations, Hollandsworth said. Last year, Kroger filed a site plan with Commerce Township officials calling for the demolition of the vacant K-mart building and rebuilding an approximately 88,000-square-foot structure at the northeast corner of Union Lake and Commerce roads. The existing Kroger store is located in same retail center as the former K-mart building, but at the opposite, north end of the development. The site plan also called for the addition of the fueling station and a drivethru pharmacy at the new Kroger store.

rank Wozny is hoping you’re able to keep your New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Wozny, a 2007 Michigan State University graduate with a degree in exercise science who is now the director of Fitness Revolution in Wixom, is putting on a 10-week Fitness Transformation Contest at the Total Sports Complex located at 30990 S. Wixom Road. Registration for the program begins tomorrow, Thursday, Jan. 10, with registration times at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., and another registration session on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 9 a.m. In addition to rigorous training, the contest will also offer nutritional health information, Wozny said. The participant who loses the greatest percentage of body weight will win a 32-inch flat screen TV, and the runner-up will earn a $50 Visa gift card – in addition to the obvious main prize of shedding those extra pounds. “Fitness Revolution is all about people changing their lives for the better,” said Wozny, who developed the program. “Unfortunately, in the fitness landscape today, there is an overload of information and myriad of programs available. Our Transformation Contest provides an easy-tounderstand training program combined with an easy-to-implement nutrition program. Both were designed specifically to keep people motivated and eliminate distractions as they improve their fitness lives.” To only participate in the weight loss challenge, the cost is $25. If you want training twice a week and nutritional guidance, the cost is $300 for the 10-week program. If you want training three times a week and nutritional guidance, it’s $450. Over the 10 weeks of the contest that starts on Monday, Jan. 14, Fitness Revolution will be chronicling participants’ transformation, including with photos, videos and weekly blog entries from the trainers and participants, on their website at www. fitnessrevolutionwixom.com. For more information, contact Wozny at frank@totalsportscomplex.com or 248-669-9818.

White Lake Seeks Input For Parks Plan Update BY KIRK PINHO ACTING EDITOR

kirkpinho@scnmail.com

Officials in White Lake Township are hoping for a healthy level of public participation when a visioning session is held on Wednesday, Jan. 16 for the township’s upcoming update of its Parks and Recreation five-year plan. The Community Visioning Session will be held at the Dublin Community and Senior Center, located at 685 Union Lake Road in White Lake, and will be moderated by the township’s Community Development Department staff. Participants will go through brainstorming exercises to get input on future park planning and policy, said Jason Iacoangeli of the Com-

munity Development Department, adding that the process is “very important to crafting the goals and objectives for the next five years with regard to park planning in White Lake. The Parks and Recreation Plan will be written to Michigan Department of Natural Resources specifications, thereby allowing the township to apply for grant funding through the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. The NRTF is a restricted fund that was established in 1976 to provide a source of funding for public acquisition of lands for resource protection and outdoor recreation. The funding is derived from royalties on the sale and lease of stateowned mineral rights.

Thanks For Help With Toys For Tots Toys For Tots is an annual company sponsored event for the collection of new, unwrapped toys for children who are less fortunate. Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel in Commerce had a tremendous response this year with the collection of toys. We would like to thank the community for their generous donations dropped off at our office. In addition, Banker’s Title Agency, Changing Places Moving Company, Affin-

ity Home Care Agency of Commerce Township, ARO Welding of Chesterfield Township participated with warm hearts and giving spirits. Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel has been a leading Realtor in Southeastern Michigan since 1950. Our company is respected in the marketplace for its professionalism, ethical behavior, experience and proven results. From Coldwell Banker Weir Manuel, Commerce Township

The Greek philosopher Zeno once theorized that no one and nothing is truly ever able to get to a set physical destination, continually taking steps – smaller and smaller each and every time until they become infinitesimal – toward that spot. It’s surely a somewhat depressing idea, the notion that, if extrapolated upon, the completion of a planned task or goal is impossible. Leave it to the ancient Greeks to come up with such a downer of an idea, I say. But here’s where that particular paradox of motion Zeno developed is applicable in this space and at this time: We at the Spinal Column Newsweekly, too, are continually taking steps – some big, others not so big – to get to our ultimate goal of being the only community newspaper you’ll ever need. In the last month, we’ve made big strides in that direction, and eventually the strides we make will be less and less noticeable, but no less important, in our continuing effort to provide the coverage and content our main constituency – you, the readers – needs, wants, and demands. In the coming weeks, you’ll start noticing a

bevy of new editorial features – not from me, necessarily, or from our freelance team, but from members of the community just like you. But we don’t want to stop at the features we have already planned; we also want input from you on what you’d like to see. Cooking tips from local chefs? Let us know. Spiritual advice from religious leaders in west Oakland County? We’d love to hear about it. A home repair column? Weekly musings on the area’s history from area historical societies? Book recommendations from local librarians? Perhaps! What you want to see in the Spinal Column Newsweekly is of the utmost importance to us, but we can’t provide that content if we don’t know what you’re thinking should grace the pages of our 53-year-old newspaper. So I guess Zeno, in some ways, was right. There will always be areas for improvement, ways we can better the Spinal Column Newsweekly to get as close as humanly possible to our goal, and we are getting closer to it each and every week. But with your help, suggestions, and feedback, you will, over time, see the steps we are taking to reach that goal shrink until eventually you can’t see them at all.

My Weight Loss Program Works. The key is to discover why you are struggling with weight. Until you restore proper physiology you will continue to struggle . Are your fat storing/fat burning hormones working correctly? Your Thyroid runs your metabolism are you hypothyroid or autoimmune thyroid? If so you will never be successful on any program until that is fixed. There is a reason why you lose weight and put it all back. Do you struggle with weight loss no matter what you do? There is a reason and I will show you what it is at my seminar. There are many weight loss programs, 90 % of them fail! If you are over weight you are most likely unhealthy and you may already be dealing with type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure , hypothyroidism, joint pain, fatigue and more. It’s time to take responsibility and take care of yourself, the longer you wait the worse it will get. No magic drugs or potions will do this for you. I can help you, your job is to get to my seminar.

Restore your health with measurable lab tests. This program is natural and safe and it is the right way to do it. When you do it the right way you only have to do it once!

Last year we helped so many people lose weight and regain their health. This year we can make it happen for you. Our patients not only lose weight they keep it off. Listen to what some of the patients from Last year have to say. #&' & &',%"$')%,$#("#" #'"&"#*''*#( )!+(&'#% Ellen s Oxford. ) '% )%, $%#%! PUBLIC SAFETY

Sheriff’s Department Offers Ice Safety Tips T here is no ice that is 100 % safe. The following chart is a recommended guide to help judge recreational use of clear, solid blue ice and help you minimize your risk: 5â€? inches thick minimum for general use (fisherman, ice skaters, and foot traffic) 8â€? inches thick minimum for travel by snowmobile, Off Road Vehicle (ORV) (We do not recommend automobiles out on the ice. This also voids any insurance claims) Survey the ice, keeping in mind that ice conditions change day by day, lake by lake and location by location on the same body of water. Some signs of changing ice conditions can be, but are not limited to: moving water near a stream, river, unseen spring or inlet, slushy areas, depressions in the snow, heavy snow, white “milkyâ€? or black colored ice and “frazzleâ€? ice weakened by the freezethaw cycles. Frazzle ice is pocketed with tiny air pockets and often looks like frozen slush. These are all signs of thin ice or unsafe ice. ¡ Do not go out alone on the ice. Always take a partner or someone who

can call 911or go for help in an emergency. ¡ Do not make the first tracks on the ice. Check with someone who has experience with a particular lake or pond before you venture out on the ice. ¡ Always leave a travel plan with someone who can call for help and direct a search party if you do not return. ¡ Plan ahead by dressing appropriately for changing weather conditions. Dress in layers to protect all exposed parts of your body. Consider wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) as part of your overall protective clothing or a flotation jacket or suit. Ice creepers attached to boots will help to keep you stable on the ice and can assist in self-rescue. ¡ Bring safety items which may include: cell phone, whistle, rope, ice pick or awls, screw driver, hand flares, flashlight, throwable PFD. Plan ahead for a rescue. ¡ Check and double check the ice thickness with an ice spud, auger or cordless drill. If you discover a weak spot, retrace your route off the ice. Keep a distance between others in your group. ¡ If you hear the ice crack or detect unsafe ice

POLICE BLOTTER

Retail Fraud Suspect’s Vehicle Stolen From Impound

A 2006 Volkswagen Passat owned by a person suspected of being involved in retail fraud was stolen from a White Lake Township towing company’s impound lot, according to law enforcement. The vehicle was reported stolen on Dec. 31, but the theft allegedly occurred between Dec. 24 and Dec. 28, White Lake Police Chief Edward Harris said. Someone stole the Volkswagen from the lot by cutting the lock to the parking lot, Harris said. Police suspect the Passat was used in the retail fraud crime.

you should stay spread out, immediately lie down (which will distribute your weight) and crawl back to safer ice by the same way you came. ¡ If someone falls through the ice, do not run to the hole. First call 911 and get help on the way and then use a pole, branch, rope or any other handy object, which can be extended to the victim from a safe position. You cannot help if you also become a victim. ¡ If you fall through the ice, do not panic, because this will only hinder your self-rescue actions. Call out for help and kick your feet while getting your hands and then arms up onto safer ice. This is when the ice awl or screwdriver will help you with your self-rescue. Continue to “swimâ€? up onto the ice far enough to crawl or “rolloutâ€? to safer ice. ¡ Snowmobiles, ORV’s and vehicles on the ice increase your risk of falling through, especially at night. Many accidents occur when operators are driving at a high rate of speed (over driving) and are unable to slow or stop in time to avoid open water or unsafe ice. ¡ Pets that venture onto unsafe ice are another major cause for many

near drownings and deaths. If you find your pet has ventured out onto the ice, resist the urge to go out after them. Stay at a safe position on shore and persuade them back to safety. ¡ Wildlife that ventures onto unsafe ice is a natural occurrence. Wildlife such as deer are strong swimmers prepared for cold weather and find their own way off the ice. Most often, wildlife discovered in the water are injured and succumb to injuries from predators or natural forces. Oakland County offers many outdoor recreation opportunities with our lakes, ponds and rivers. However, before you step out onto the ice we strongly urge you to plan ahead and consider the risks involved. “When in doubt, don’t go outâ€?. The Oakland County Sheriff ’s Marine Unit offers: Boating, ORV, Snowmobile, and Hunting Safety Classes to the public. If you would like more information on “Ice Safetyâ€? or any of our outdoor recreation safety classes please call us at (248) 858-5000 or visit us on our web site at www. The proposed First Amended Idlewild Dust Control Special Assessment District involves property located in the Charter Township of Commerce, Oakland County, Michigan, which is described in the attached Exhibit A. Plans showing the improvement, the location, and the legal description are on file with the Township Clerk for public examination.
