Anchor Buoy Cove Tavern
during the day...
Great food, cold drinks and an unbeatable atmosphere characterise The Marine Village’s Cove Tavern. A favourite for family gettogethers and meet-ups with friends, the menu has something for everyone lunch or dinner.
Recline and dine waterside at this iconic Sanctuary Cove venue. Open from 7am until 3pm, Anchor Buoy has your casual bite, big breakfast or long lunch sorted. They even do events.
Quay Street Cafe and Bar If you’re looking for Instagramworthy dishes, you’ll find them at Quay Street. Luckily it’s open for breakfast and lunch, so you can come back time and time again - if not for a coffee catchup, then for a full-blown feast.
Bistro Nineteen Formerly Cafe Nineteen, the newly-revamped Bistro Nineteen has big shoes to fill - but, with a superb menu spanning breakfast, lunch and dinner, we’re certain it will live up to its beloved predecessor.
George’s Paragon This Sanctuary Cove staple comes in many forms - a classic seafood restaurant (more on that on Page 7), George’s Paragon Pizza & Wine Bar and, just across the way, Café Bravo. Enjoy a waterfront breakfast, then return for lunch at the pizza bar. Bliss.
Sushi Break Authentic, fresh and totally moreish, this isn’t your average sushi train. With a menu covering classic sushi styles and other Japanese dishes, Sushi Break is a go-to for a quick pit stop or a filling lunch, night and day.

Thai House Dealing in sizzling skewers and hearty noodles, Thai House is a must-try dinner (or lunch) spot for those in search of an authentic Thai dining experience. Perfectly positioned near the picturesque marina, you can enjoy a post-dinner walk with a view.
Ioesco Café & Cucina Modern Italian and Mediterranean combine at Ioesco, one of Sanctuary Cove’s must-visit lunch and dinner destinations. With an extensive menu of authentic delights, you can practically taste the tradition.
SEAFOODwith a view A LOVE OF LIFE ON THE WATER AND FINE DINING COMBINE AT SANCTUARY COVE, AND OUR MANY SEAFOOD OFFERINGS ARE THE PERFECT WAY TO EXPERIENCE THAT LOVE FIRST-HAND. IS THERE ANYTHING BETTER THAN OYSTERS OVERLOOKING THE MARINA?
George’s Paragon Seafood Restaurant George’s name is familiar around Sanctuary Cove - you’ll find his cafe across the road from this seafood restaurant, and a more casual pizza bar next door. But if it’s fresh seafood dishes with a Mediterranean twist that you’re after, this is the place to go. Lunch and dinner, George’s serves up an extensive menu of fish, crustaceans and mussels, alongside pasta, prime meats and poultry. Diners return time and time again, craving not only the food but the stunning waterfront view.
Any South-East Queenslander will agree that our seafood is second to none - the spoils of world-famous Moreton Bay, the Coomera and Nerang Rivers and the Coral Sea all arrive fresh to our doorstep for our tasting pleasure. Here at Sanctuary Cove, we’re particularly well-positioned. Perfectly perched on the Coomera River - which flows out, past scattered islands, into the Coral Sea - and not far from Moreton Bay, we enjoy local whiting, snapper and even rare jewfish. Add to that the plethora of crustaceans (mud crabs, king and tiger prawns and, of course, Moreton Bay bugs) found in our region, and it’s no surprise that Sanctuary Cove is one of the best places to find fresh, local seafood in abundance. While you’ll find seafood dishes on almost every menu in Sanctuary Cove, there are a handful of restaurants that serve them up with a marina view to match....
Artichoke Restaurant & Bar A round of freshly shucked oysters, a spot of chargrilled octopus followed up with crab tortellini in a tomato cream bouillon - all washed down with a glass of fine wine. Positioned on the marina, Artichoke Restaurant & Bar is a favourite for yacht spotters and seafood lovers, catering to both in equal measure. Not one for playing by the rules, executive chef Grant Madgwick puts his unique spin on fresh seafood dishes, serving up a modern Australia, Italian, French and Asian fusion that delights the senses and leaves you wanting more. The best part? They’re open for lunch and dinner.
Black Angus Bar and Grill
Dragon Cove Indulgence and authenticity define Dragon Cove, Sanctuary Cove’s premier Chinese restaurant. From dumplings to Peking duck, cooked fresh and carved at your table, your lunch or dinner here won’t disappoint.
Jonez on Food Jonez on Food serves up the finest seasonal ingredients in contemporary combinations - the culmination of more than 45 years’ experience. Enjoy a long lunch or an intimate dinner waterside.
It’s billed as a steakhouse, but Sanctuary Cove insiders know Black Angus’s seafood offerings are just as good as their sirloin. Start with pan-seared sea scallops or the grilled octopus, and indulge in the fresh fish of the day as your main. Or, if you really feel like sampling a smorgasbord of seafood, try the ‘Ocean Platter for Two’. Complete with bug tails, king prawns, calamari and more, it’s one of the best seafood experiences Sanctuary Cove has to offer. Visit during the day for panoramic marina views, or see the water sparkle at dusk.
liquid PLEASURE NOTHING MAKES A SUMMER MEAL BETTER THAN THE PERFECT DROP. BUT IT CAN BE HARD CHOOSING JUST THE RIGHT RED, WHITE, SPIRIT OR BUBBLES. IF ONLY YOU HAD EXPERT INFO ON TAP, OR MAYBE A DRINKS GURU ON HAND TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE... INTRODUCING ALFIE PARDOE, OF CORKER CELLARS.
~ FA S H ION ~
WHAT DRINKS ARE ON-TREND AT CORKER CELLARS AT THE MOMENT AND WHY?
Rosé, Prosecco, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the styles/varieties that we are seeing ‘on trend’ at Corker Cellars. Rosé is a very versatile wine that really suits our lifestyle and cuisine here in Queensland. The wines of Provence, France are the guiding light in this category. Prosecco is a cheaper alternative to the more expensive French Champagne, usually a little lighter in alcohol content, and a fun wine to drink. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay growers in both Australia and New Zealand are recognising site selection, clonal vagaries and concentrating on regional expressions to make some of the best examples on the global stage. The French are keeping a close eye on us!

TELL US ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF WINE MATCHING. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR BACKGROUND? WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BEING IN YOUR CURRENT ROLE AT CORKER CELLARS?
ALFIE PARDOE CORKER CELLARS
When my mother was pregnant with me, she was prescribed a pint of Guinness Stout a day by her doctor. It was inevitable that my career path had leanings towards the liquor industry! Fast forward to my late teens where, in Adelaide, I was lucky enough to gain employment with the Vintage Cellars Group, when it was still a family-owned independent premium wine retailer. I then travelled, working vintage in New Zealand then returning to Adelaide to run a record store, still with a hand in the wine industry, helping make a little wine and promoting festivals. I moved to the Gold Coast (when the digital age put an end to the music retail industry) and ran into Ioseco owner Max Alferi, who needed some experienced wine staff. Max was a past director of Corker Cellars. TELL US ABOUT THE CHANGING DEMOGRAPHIC OF AUSTRALIAN DRINKERS. WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN THIS RESPECT ?
Overall consumption of alcohol has steadily risen over the last few years, with an increase in the per-bottle average spend. Premium wine has shown good growth and drives both the domestic and export markets. 8
Pairing the right wine with a meal can be a revelatory moment. Some classics are pan-fried salmon with a crisp dry Rosé, chargrilled steak with a full-bodied Coonawarra Cabernet, or even Pinot Noir matched with duck. When you get an idea of the complimentary aspects wine can have on the dining experience, you will get an elevated sense of enjoyment and be on the path to gastronomy. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT ARE THE BEST LIQUID CHRISTMAS GIFTS TO GIVE?
This Christmas, I will be giving out bottles of Champagne - the perfect celebratory tipple. Magnums are a fantastic gift and ideal to take to larger gatherings - eye catching too! Single malt whisky is a family favourite and the resurgence in quality has been phenomenal. IF YOU’RE HEADING OFF ON A SUMMER PICNIC OR OUT ON A DAY ON THE WATER, WHAT ARE YOU TAKING WITH YOU TO ‘STAY HYDRATED’?
An esky full of beer to enjoy with friends is a perfect start. The craft beer space is very crowded at the moment, so my samples fridge is chock-o-block! I love a good Riesling, so something from the Clare Valley would come along for the ride. Once the sun drops into the ocean, I would open a bottle (magnum, of course) of Charles Melton Nine Popes. Charles was the first to make a GSM blend in the Barossa and this wine is possibly Australia’s finest.
WOMEN’S trending: SUMMER STYLE SUMMER STYLE AND SANCTUARY COVE GO HAND IN HAND - BUT WHAT’S IN AND WHAT’S OUT FOR THE SEASON AHEAD? SANCTUARY COVE’S RESIDENT STYLIST SUSIE MCWATT FORBES TELLS ALL.
Take a walk through The Marine Village or spend an afternoon at the Country Club and you’ll notice there’s one thing Sanctuary Cove visitors all have in common: an impeccable sense of style. But which trends will we be seeing more of as the warm weather creeps in, and how should we be embracing them? Stylist Susie McWatt Forbes has a few good ideas. “This summer, I’m expecting to see a lot of creativity when it comes to colour,” she says. “A bold, block shade teamed back with nude accessories. Pastel pinks, sage greens and butter boldly paired with tan accents. And, for the lovers of monochrome, lots of black and white worn with pastels for a twist.” When it comes to tones on trend, Susie’s pick for the season is emerald green - particularly with denim, rich, spicy hues and white. “Go bold, and keep accessories minimal,” she adds. Linen makes a triumphant return, in everything from singlets to shorts, longline dresses to sassy playsuits. Try a linen suit - structured jacket and extra-wide leg relaxed pant - for events and you’ll nab ‘Best Dressed’ time and time again. “This super natural fabric ticks all the boxes,” Susie says. “A tip: pop it in the dryer just before you put it on.” Fans of animal print know this staple will never truly die, and it’s back this summer as popular as ever. Try teaming it with a bold fuschia, orange or emerald green for a bit of summer magic. From sensational playsuits and jumpsuits to mini and midi dresses, anything goes when it comes to summer silhouettes. “Know your style and pick what works best for your body shape,” says Susie. “Remember to change up your look, too. Go from sporty to boho to fun and flirty with a view bang-on accessories.”
Now for the question on everyone’s lips: how can you perfect a polished summer look with minimal effort? “I like to have some never-fail combinations in my repertoire that I know I can always fall back on,” says Susie. “A nice pair of natural espadrilles or wedge ropy heels and anything shell - whether it’s earrings, an ankle bracelet or a bold neck piece - paired with an off-theshoulder style is always a winner. “A high-waist pant in a crazy print is definitely a summer must-have. Just add a flouncy top and plenty of attitude - and you’re good to go!” And finally, which accessory will carry us through to autumn? “My current favourite would have to be a headwrap,” says Susie. “Think bold and beautiful, a headwrap can act as a splash of colour, a talking point and help you take care of a bad hair day!”

5. Add some colour with green plants or wall art – but do so sparingly. There is definitely such thing as too much when it comes to coastal style, so for paintings go for one large photograph or two or three smaller frames in a series. Remember, the style is inspired by luxurious beach houses, so coastal-themed art is always appropriate.
COASTAL STYLE IS TRULY TIMELESS. A PERFECT BLEND OF DEEP BLUES, CRISP WHITES AND SOFT NATURAL TEXTURES, IT EMBODIES ELEGANCE, EXTRAVAGANCE AND RELAXED BEACHSIDE LIVING ALL AT ONCE.
6 Originating from the affluent seaside towns northeast of New York City, Hamptons living has long been coveted the world over. Now, you can bring the same ageless coastal look into your home – without having to uproot and move to the Hamptons themselves. And it’s all courtesy of Sanctuary Cove retailers.
Here’s how: 1. Start with a bare base. The foundation of any coastal style home is white – white walls, windows and ceilings. You can go slightly rogue and opt for beige, cream or grey, but stick to the general rule of ‘light and bright’.
2. It’s window treatment time. Plantation shutters are the obvious choice for a coastal room, as they are clean, crisp and functional. Floor-to-ceiling sheer curtains are another great option, adding softness to your space. You can even go all out and team the two together, in different shades, to create that multi-tonal, multi-textured look that is relaxed coastal living. 3. When it comes to key pieces of living room furniture, think large, sumptuous couches and armchairs. Lots of strategically placed seating is key to making your home feel relaxed, offering many places for you and your guests to lounge. Loads of convenient side tables offer places for books – and, of course, your cuppa.
4. The next step: layers, layers, layers. The coastal colour palette may be simple (light and bright), but in terms of texture, the more the better. Opt for cushions and throws in different fabrics, large soft rugs topped with chrome or wooden furniture as well as knick-knacks, candles and coffee table books for decoration.
1. Protea placemat (set of four), $19.95, Perfect Decor 2. Anya large bowl, $399, Theo & Joe 3. Coco Botanicals hand-poured soy candles, $49.99, Cabana 4. ~WHAT ’S ON~
~WHAT ’S ON~
When you think about those headlining magicians and incredible illusionists of the past hundred-or-so years, the name Harry Houdini will most definitely spring to mind. But did you know that awardwinning Sanctuary Cove master magician Matt Hollywood has links back to this iconic illusionist and stunt performer? Matt’s great grandfather was a turn-of-theCentury magician named Luke Stirling, or “The Great Stirlini” as he was known on stage. Around 1911, Houdini visited Melbourne on an Australian tour and Matt’s grandfather was involved in Houdini’s shows, assisting with his stunts. Matt has strong and very fond memories of his great grandfather, Luke.
magic happens THERE’S NO DOUBTING SANCTUARY COVE STALWART ENTERTAINER MATT HOLLYWOOD HAS MAGIC IN HIS VEINS – BUT IT’S ALSO ACTUALLY, LEGITIMATELY, IN HIS GENECODE.
“He would do incredible things with fire,” Matt recalls. “I’ll never forget it. “When he was 96 years old, I was 10 and he taught me a coin trick where - with a POP! – the coin would just instantly vanish,” Matt says. “That trick still tricks other magicians today. I include it in all my shows as a way of ensuring my great grandfather’s magic lives on.” Originally from Melbourne, Matt has spent the past 17 years living on the Gold Coast but jokes that he’s still waiting for the day that he’ll be able to call himself a ‘local’. While his fascination for magic never wavered from those early childhood memories spent growing up with The Great Stirlini, Matt admits that it took him a while to take the “scary” leap of faith to become a fulltime magician. In fact, he spent a decade working as a police officer in Melbourne, all the while honing his magic tricks and performing sporadic shows around his cop roster. It was on that fateful move to the Gold Coast, however, that Matt decided to boldly pursue his life’s passion to perform magic. And it has definitely paid off. After a decade travelling the length and breadth of Australia performing magic shows at corporate gigs and gala events, Matt found the perfect ‘home’ for his business in The Marine Village at Sanctuary Cove six years ago.
Fronting Masthead Way, Matt says he was the first Australian magician to own his own venue and provides the only fulltime magic show in Australia (one of just 20 in the world!). “We bring about 1000 visitors to Sanctuary Cove every month,” Matt says. “The theatre is open daily for visitors to walk through and we perform the shows every Friday and Saturday night.” There’s no doubting ‘Illusions Magic Show’ is a crowd pleaser. Matt has around 1000 five-star ratings on social media and has impressed more Hollywood stars and distinguished characters than we could list in this magazine’s pages. Think everyone from the Sultan of Brunei and the Prime Minister of Malaysia, to Dolph Lundgren (who claims he is Matt’s doppleganger!). “I’ve performed for every Australian Prime Minister for the past 25 years,” Matt says. “Nicole Kidman came and saw two of my shows in a row, bringing her mum and her kids along as well.” While the shows are knockout hits among audiences, Matt himself is highly regarded in his industry. Among his commendations, Matt received the International Merlin Award for Illusionist of the Year (the “biggest accolade” for magicians on an international scale – it’s the Oscars equivalent for magicians!) as well

as Australian Entertainer of the Year. So, what should guests expect out of a Matt Hollywood show? “It’s funny – people don’t quite know what to expect when they arrive. What they will get is a spectacular magic show, filled with Las Vegasstyle grand Illusions, that will also make them laugh so hard they’ll cry!” When Matt’s not making magic happen on stage, he’s a devoted father of two daughters, aged 10 and 13, and loves any watersports – especially jetskiing. He jokes that when he’s not ‘Matt Hollywood’, his other ‘job’ is as an Uber driver for his social butterfly girls – and he wouldn’t have it any other way! www.illusionshow.com.au www.matthollywood.com
Matt’s hot tip... When Matt Hollywood isn’t on stage performing mind-blowing illusions and LOL magic tricks, you’ll find him enjoying “the most amazing meals” at either Black Angus Bar and Grill or Ioesco.

THE DIFFERENCE CELEBRATING WELLBEING IN ALL ITS MANY FORMS, THE SANCTUARY COVE COUNTRY CLUB IS NO ORDINARY GYM. HERE’S WHY...
There aren’t many places you can sweat it out in a sauna, bend and stretch in a yoga class or serve it up on the tennis court, all in one afternoon - even fewer in a setting as idyllic as Sanctuary Cove. The Sanctuary Cove Country Club is revered as a place where luxury and wellbeing combine, offering members (who come from far and wide) a diverse group fitness timetable, stateof-the-art facilities and unparalleled services each and every time they visit. In the gym and air-conditioned training rooms, get your heart rate up with classes like Body Pump, Zumba, RPM, cardio, cycle and more, or treat yourself to a restorative yoga or mat work Pilates class. 22
Outdoors, soak up the sun in the heated 25m swimming pool or go for a game on one of the five tennis courts. Seek assistance from the Country Club’s expert personal trainers and fitness instructors who will help guide you through your workout and offer ongoing support to help you achieve your wellness goals. And speaking of wellness, you can indulge in some much-needed rest and relaxation in the spa and sauna, or the specialised treatment rooms. Massage therapists and beauticians are on hand to tend to your every need, with services including massages, facials and beauty treatments all offered on-site. Parents will love the child-minding options on offer, with the Kidz Club catering for babies and children up to 10 years old. When your workout or treatment is done, refuel at Arnie’s Café & Bar overlooking the lush gardens and stunning Sanctuary Cove scenery. We told you: this is no ordinary gym.
There are few places where Sanctuary Cove’s tagline, ‘One day is never enough’, is truer than at the Country Club - you’ll have to return time and time again in order to experience the full suite of services on offer. To learn more about how a membership at the Sanctuary Cove Country Club will work for you, simply head online to www.sanctuarycovecountryclub.com.au/ memberships.
AVID GOLFERS WILL AGREE THAT A DAY ON THE GREEN IS MORE THAN JUST A SPORT OR A HOBBY – IT’S THE KEY TO LIVING A HAPPY, HEALTHY LIFE. YOU MAY THINK THAT SOUNDS EXTREME, BUT IT TURNS OUT THEY’RE NOT WRONG.
When it comes to getting your heart rate up, you don’t always have to sweat it out in a cardio session. Finding a low-impact activity that you enjoy, and are happy to do regularly, is a sure-fire way to ensure that you are getting in enough exercise. A few rounds of golf every week could be all you need to keep fit and healthy. Did you know that you can walk up to seven kilometres playing an 18-hole golf course? Reports state walking can benefit your health in more ways than one – it can reduce your risk of heart disease, improve the fitness of your heart and lungs, strengthen your bones , improve your balance and help to manage conditions like muscle and joint stiffness, high cholesterol and diabetes. Regular exercise – as we all know – can also help you to keep fit and trim, particularly if you’re ditching the golf cart and rolling your clubs from hole to hole yourself (rather than carrying them, which can cause stress to your back and shoulders). Plus, breathing in the fresh air benefits your digestive system, strengthens your immune system and gives you more energy and a
sharper mind. And we can’t forget the power of good old vitamin D from the sun for promoting bone growth and strength by helping our bodies to absorb calcium – just ensure you stay protected by wearing sunscreen and a hat when you’re out on the green. Above all this, golf is a great way to keep in touch with friends – and also to make new ones. So, grab your clubs, hit one of the two Sanctuary Cove courses (The Palms or The Pines) and enjoy a day spent doing your body some good. As it turns out, a golf session is just what the doctor ordered!
Take a tour... You can tour each of the 18 holes on both Sanctuary Cove golf courses (The Palms and The Pines) on the Sanctuary Cove website. For each hole, you’ll find a written description, vital statistics and even a video tour. To book a round, visit www.sanctuarycovegolf.com.au @VISITSANCTUARYCOVE
Indulge in sunset cocktails at Jonez on Food or, for a more low-key atmosphere, the Cove Tavern.
the perfect girls’getaway FROM THE MOMENT YOU
DRIVE ALONG SANCTUARY COVE’S PAVED, PALM TREELINED ENTRANCE, YOU’LL FEEL IT - THE INSTANT RELAXATION THAT SIGNALS THE START OF THE PERFECT GIRLS’ WEEKEND AWAY.
Photography ~ Style Magazine
You’ve cleared the calendar, gathered the girls and decided on dates for the ultimate weekend escape. But, how will you spend it? Strolling waterside, lounging in luxury and indulging in good food, great wine and even better company - at Sanctuary Cove, of course. Your weekend begins as you step through the grand entrance of the InterContinental Hotel Sanctuary Cove. When you’re shown to your room - noting the deluxe double bed and gorgeous amenities - you swap your suitcase for a shoulder bag and prepare to get out and explore. In the resort itself, you’ll find spilling water features, lavish pools and stunning surrounds that make you feel worlds away from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast or Brisbane city (in reality, you’re just an hour’s drive south of the state capital). Keen to explore all that Sanctuary Cove has to offer, ensure you indulge in a coffee at Pier B Espresso (you’ll find it nestled between fine dining restaurants and lavish boutiques in the marina) before starting your day. There’s a lot of ground to cover and you want to be prepared. No girls’ weekend is complete without a spot of shopping, so you should stop in at Soho Girl and Harry’s Emporium (formerly Harry’s Jeans) to find quality threads for every style and taste. Tracie from Harry’s Emporium will no doubt host an impromptu styling session, helping you pick out the perfect designer ensembles for the weekend to come - accented with a bottle of bubbly, no less. When hunger strikes, pop across the marina to Jonez on Food to sample their inspired
menu. Blending culturally innovative food with British classics - in a Hamptons-esque setting, no less - Jonez on Food provides the perfect seaside dining destination, serving each meal with a marina view on the side. But if a long lunch doesn’t fit your schedule, you’ll find myriad dining options to suit every occasion in The Marine Village - all just a short walk apart. Back at the InterContinental, you’ll be tempted by the on-site menu offerings (crab linguine or chicken dumplings, anyone?) but there’s no time to waste… a high coffee experience provides the perfect pick-me-up of coffee, cake and smoked hot chocolate. Mingle with the resident wildlife - kangaroos can often be spotted basking in the afternoon sun - then hit The Marine Village again for dusk drinks and dinner. Indulge in sunset cocktails at Black Angus Bar and Grill or, for a more low-key atmosphere, the Cove Tavern, or pick up a bottle of wine from Corker Cellars and a cheese platter from Lee’s IGA. At dinnertime, Ioesco is calling your name, with its tantalising Mediterranean menu and welcoming Italian dining vibe - like a Siena hideout only the locals know, but there’s no passport required. Sink into the leather seats and sip on Montepulciano red wine as you get your fill on dishes like beef carpaccio, baked gnocchi, Moreton Bay bug pasta and fresh caprese salad. All bursting with fresh seafood and garden ingredients, you’ll have a hard time choosing what to order - but fear not, as you quite literally can’t go wrong.
When the glow fades, don’t despair. It only means another girls’ getaway at Sanctuary Cove is just on the horizon.
After dinner, make your way back to the InterContinental in a delightful carb coma, ready to retire and rest up for your blissful morning yoga class at the Sanctuary Cove Country Club, followed by a series of treatments at the day spa. That feeling of tranquility continues long after you check out of the InterContinental and drive back along those palm tree-lined streets you’ll glow from the inside out as you return to your weekly routine. When the glow fades, don’t despair. It only means another girls’ getaway at Sanctuary Cove is just on the horizon. @VISITSANCTUARYCOVE
STAGE 1 COMPLETION APRIL 2020
THE MAN BEHIND THE MARINA KEEPING THE SANCTUARY COVE MARINA IN SHIP SHAPE MAY NOT ALWAYS BE SMOOTH SAILING, BUT FOR GENERAL MANAGER STEVE SAMMES, IT’S THE JOB OF A LIFETIME.
WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE FOR A BOATING DAY TRIP, AND WHAT DO YOU ALWAYS PACK?
My wife and I love cruising out to Tipplers, dropping anchor, then going ashore by tender to enjoy a great lunch at the Tipplers Café. Good friends of ours, Scott and Rebecca, have operated the Tipplers Café for a number of years now, and it’s a great day out where everyone is made to feel really welcome. As for what we pack, well, we never know if a day trip to Tipplers will just be a ‘day trip’, so I always pack an overnight bag - just to be prepared! WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE ON THE WATER?
Always check the weather reports prior to your trip. Before leaving the marina, check over the engine, electricals, make sure the VHF radio works and ensure you have enough fuel and water for the trip. YOU’RE TAKING FRIENDS OUT BOATING FOR THE DAY – WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO SERVE UP FOR LUNCH?
Definitely fresh prawns from the Sanctuary Cove Prawn Trawler man, Dave Patane, all washed down with a rather nice glass of sparkling Bimbadgen wine. IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR BOAT FURTHER AFIELD, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO?
I love my old stomping grounds around the Pittwater and Hawkesbury cruising areas, north of Sydney. Great scenery, plenty of protected coves for anchoring amidst the national parks and good deep water. 26
impressive MARINA EXPANSION
WHAT IS YOUR DREAM DESTINATION? If I had the right vessel to cruise around in comfortably, my pick would be Tuscany. I’d love to cruise along the Italian coastline with no timetable, just stopping off at marinas along the way. IF MONEY WERE NO OBJECT, WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM BOAT PURCHASE, AND WHY?
Being originally from England, I have a certain allegiance to the Princess brand. On my last trip back to England a couple of years ago, I went and spent almost a whole day being shown around the Princess Yachts manufacturing base in Plymouth. The size of each of their sites in the city is incredible. Princess also employ in excess of 4000 people, all part of the manufacturing process. Great product, exceptional quality build. WHAT MAKES BOATING ON THE GOLD COAST UNIQUE?
We have 365 days of boating time on the water here on the Gold Coast, along with a unique variety of local cruising destinations - from
the hub and vibrancy of the southern end, through to the tranquil and quiet secluded anchorages around the northern islands.
SANCTUARY COVE MARINA WILL ENJOY AN $8.3 MILLION EXPANSION, BRINGING WITH IT ACCESSIBILITY FOR SUPERYACHTS AS WELL AS AUSTRALIAN-FIRST COVERED BERTHS.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: ONLY A LOCAL BOATIE WILL KNOW… Where the best
fishing spots really are - certainly not on any map.
Top tip… Take the fuss out of catering and order a delicious platter from Lee’s IGA to enjoy while boating. Choose from a range of seafood and antipasto platters. Simply order your platters by phoning 5514 8682 to arrange collection at a time that’s convenient for you.
Sanctuary Cove Marina will enjoy an $8.3 million expansion, taking capacity from 237 to 303 vessels. The new development was green-lighted on the back of increasing demand for large premium recreational vessels, from 50 feet in length up to superyachts larger than 180 feet. And in a first for the Australian recreational marina industry, the new marina will include covered berths. This six-star offering will provide premier marina berthing complemented by unparalleled customer service, facilities and amenities. Sanctuary Cove Marina General Manager, Steve Sammes, says the new facility will set “a new benchmark in marina design and facilities in Australia”. “Sanctuary Cove is uniquely positioned to offer berth holders the ultimate boating and lifestyle experience,” Steve says. “There’s direct access
to The Marine Village, home to one of the best dining and retail destinations on the Gold Coast, the five-star InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort, two championship golf courses and the Sanctuary Cove Country Club offering an outstanding range of gym, massage, Pilates and fitness services - all this at the fingertips of our berth holders.” Mulpha has been encouraged by the continued growth of the Gold Coast marine industry. Recent announcements such as the multimillion-dollar private investment in the refit and maintenance facilities in the adjacent Coomera Marine Precinct, and the State Government’s commitment to long-term dredging of the Coomera River demonstrate commitment to making the Northern Gold Coast area a premium boating destination in the region. Mulpha CEO Greg Shaw says Sanctuary Cove boasts a unique value proposition as
Australia’s best-positioned marina in terms of location and facilities. “Sanctuary Cove is a truly integrated lifestyle resort offering the very best in resort hotel, retail, golf, fitness and lifestyle facilities. This unique setting also hosts an impressive calendar of events, including the annual Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show and the Sanctuary Cove Food and Wine Festival. “We are confident local, interstate and international boat owners will see the benefits of leasing a berth at Sanctuary Cove and enjoying a sojourn on the Gold Coast as part of their itinerary.” Local Gold Coast company Superior Jetties has been awarded the contract to carry out the project. The marina expansion is due for completion prior to the next Sanctuary Cove International Boat show (May 21-24, 2020). @VISITSANCTUARYCOVE

Any time I go out on the water, whether it’s one a jetski or the boat, it’s always to the same area. I love Couran Cove and Tippler’s and McLaren’s Landing on South Stadbroke Island. It’s six minutes by jetski, and you only have to spend the day there to feel like you’ve been on a holiday. WHAT’S YOUR DREAM BOAT PURCHASE?

WHAT MAKES BOATING ON THE GOLD COAST UNIQUE? The accessibility to
local waterways and anchorages.
WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE FOR A BOATING DAY TRIP? I would
recommend anywhere from the shores of Wave Break Island on the Gold Coast up to Tangalooma in Moreton Island. This is about a two-hour trip for local Gold Coasters but well worth the effort for crystal clear waters and the ability to have a snorkel on the wrecks.
I honestly wouldn’t want a huge boat if money were no object. Instead, I’d like a Whitehaven Harbour Classic 40. It’s a ‘picnic’ boat - it’s a party for 10, dinner for five and, with two double beds, sleeping for four. WHAT MAKES BOATING ON THE GOLD COAST UNIQUE?
There are lots of places to explore, and it’s a very pretty environment. I feel like I’m in heaven here: I love boats, I love theme parks and I love the sun. I couldn’t be happier!
IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR WATERCRAFT FURTHER AFIELD, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO? Hamilton Island is absolutely one of
our favourite locations. Most of the reefs and islands on the way up are a pleasure to visit as well.

WHAT MAKES BOATING ON THE GOLD COAST UNIQUE? I would have to say the
canal estates, it is so unique! There are not many places around the world that you can have your boat in your backyard and have access to the Broadwater and ocean within 10 minutes.
WHERE’S THE BEST PLACE FOR A BOATING DAY TRIP? I love a day at Jumpinpin or Wave Break Island. Clean water, sandy beaches and great spot for the kids to get out and play or wet a line. IF YOU’RE TAKING A BOAT FURTHER AFIELD, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO? In summer, the waters of Tasmania are amazing. In
winter, the big boats mostly migrate north for the colder months and the hundreds of gorgeous anchorages throughout the Whitsundays right up to Cairns and Port Douglas are the absolute best way to escape the cold of winter. LSYachts regularly assists clients in voyage planning. WHAT’S YOUR DREAM BOAT PURCHASE? Hampton Endurance
720 Skylounge; it’s as big as one might go while remaining intimate on the water and driving yourself. You can typically get into marinas and anchorages that the larger 30-50m yachts can’t get into.
WHAT MAKES BOATING ON THE GOLD COAST UNIQUE? There’s
so many locations to hide from the weather, increasing your days onboard. It’s the ideal ground for boats 25ft - 75ft. There are also plenty of marinas to grab a berth for the night - you can meet friends for lunch and stroll back to your boat and enjoy all the amenities.

YOU’RE TAKING FRIENDS OUT BOATING FOR THE DAY – WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO SERVE UP FOR LUNCH? It’s hard to beat seafood on the boat. Nice
fresh prawns and oysters and a mango salad made from Kensington Pride mangoes is the best.
IF YOU’RE TAKING YOUR BOAT FURTHER AFIELD, WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO GO? My two favourites are the
Whitsundays - being my home town - and spending a week or two in the Clarence River. It’s very calming.
