oikos Warsaw Responsibility for ownership

Doubtable credit transactions, the “greed of investment bankers, weak regulations - we seem to have an unsustainable financial system. In a lecture series at the University of Cologne, oikos Cologne asked: Can we do it differently?

oikos Warsaw organised a panel discussion on the topic of responsible ownership. The main questions for the panel discussion were as follows: Responsibility in business meaningless talks or a great idea? What is the freedom in business? Is it possible? Is an existing legislation an impediment for an enterprise and how is it related to the idea of CSR?

Meet alumnus... Lukasz Makuch My name is Lukasz Makuch and I work as a CSR coordinator at PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, Poland’s biggest energy company. Before I joined this company, I was a corporate sustainability consultant at PwC. I was part of oikos between 20042006 when I served as the president of oikos Warsaw. Since 2006, I am a member of the Advisory Board of this chapter. The oikos motto — ‘Be informed, get involved, make a difference’ — was and still is my reason for being active within oikos because I truly believe in this philosophy.

On 21 November, Local Chapters around the world celebrated oikos Alumni Day 2009. It is the first time the oikos network brings together its alumni on the same day in different cities around the world (for example, in Paris and Cologne). The oikos Alumni Day coincided with Shaping Change. This events was the first in a series of events focussed on developing tools for change makers.

What I care most about in sustainability is the possibility to make a difference. In my job, I try to balance the ecological, social and economical aspects of PGE to minimize its environmental and social impact and create added social value. For me, the biggest hurdle to overcome within my company is a mental hurdle: it is a former state owned company and currently 85% is still state owned. In 2010, I hope that we can continue networking amongst oikos alumni and develop some joint projects, in collaboration with oikos chapters. One hint I can give to current oikos students is ‘Never stop being an oikee!’
