Year 5 – Summer Homework
utz
Year 5 you are ! Those of you who know their Mayan will understand that accolade! Well done on our fabulous homework projects. Congratulations to those who submitted their 500 words stories on line… wonder if we’ll have a winner in Year 5!? Be sure to look on the class blogs for celebratory photos of your work. Here is the homework for this half term: READING – Your child should read independently EVERY night for a minimum of 15 minutes. Please also encourage them to choose a suitable question (see reading journal) to answer about their book, noting the answer in their reading journal or discussing it with them. At St John’s we use the AR reading programme to ensure your child is reading books that suitably challenge them. The class teacher will check the books suitability for your child. (Please read the notes within your child’s reading journal for further guidance.) Children should bring their reading journal in school every day. SPELLING – Each Friday there will be a spelling test using the weekly spellings below. MATHS - Online ‘My Maths’ tasks to complete over the term. Multiplication and division facts for all times tables. (Listed at back of reading/homework journal.) HOMEWORK PROJECT – See below the activities that make up this half term’s homework project. Please complete all three activities. They need to be completed and handed in on or before Thursday 20th June 2019. On this date, the children will have the chance to display and share their work with their teachers and peers. This will be a wonderful day – we are looking forward to celebrating hard work and rewarding success.

To support our learning of the Earth and Space we would like the children to consolidate what they have learnt about how the planets in our Solar System/Earth/the Moon/Black Holes exist in our solar system. They can do this in whatever way they want – make a model, draw a picture, write a report or create a PowerPoint presentation. Be as creative as possible! Make a piece of Spanish bunting- our Spanish visitors are arriving in June. To welcome them warmly, we would like to make some paper bunting. Your child will be given this paper bunting to take home and design, colour and create in a welcoming way. Religion Focus: We are reading a booked called ‘Floodlands’ by Marcus Sedgewick which addresses the concerns about climate change and rising tides. Think about the Pope’s message, Laudato Si. Create a poster or a model that encourages people to think about the seriousness of climate change. What messages could you use to encourage people to take action to save our planet?
