At the end of the first most “normal” if somewhat challenging year that we have seen in a long while, what a lovely way to finish the year by taking a look at all the wider experiences that we have been able to offer the students this term. It is a pleasure to see so many smiling faces and team work. The experiences have ranged from trips abroad to school performances. I am proud to lead such a positive group of individuals and look forward to a similarly successful academic year ahead. It is impossible to single out one event as “the” highlight as all mean so much to the students and staff. As with any academic year, we continue to embrace change and say a fond farewell and thank you to some staff who are moving on to the next chapter in their professional and personal lives. Two of those members of staff have been with us for a long time and it is after 15 years of dedication to Lostock Hall students, that Mrs Heaton is moving on to pastures new and Mr Macrae has decided that after over 20 years of teaching and commitment here at LHA to retire and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the countryside. We wish them and others every success and happiness in all that they do as I know that they will always be LHA people. I wish you all an enjoyable read and a safe summer break. Enjoy!

Art and Geography subjects were delighted to take 62 Y7 students to Yorkshire sculpture park in June. Students fully immersed themselves into observing and analysing the works on display. Artwork by Sir Henry Moore to contemporary artist Damien Hirst challenged and stimulated their thoughts and opinions about abstract figures and conceptual art! We would like to say well done everyone for producing high quality sketches and mini sculptures and photographic compositions. We enjoyed seeing artwork first hand, exploring the park, improving our map reading skills and having a well deserved ice lolly in the sunshine!

Primary Partnership Week
In June we invited 277 Year 5 students from 9 local primary schools to take part in Primary Partnership Week at Lostock Hall Academy. Students from Cuerden Church School, Westwood, Little Hoole, Walton-le-Dale, St. Leonards, Farington Moss St. Pauls, Lostock Hall Community, Brindle Gregson Lane and St. Josephs experienced a day in the life of a student at LHA. We are pleased you enjoyed your taster day and hope to see you all again with your parents at our Open Evening in September!

Science Rocket Design Students in Science designed and made stomp rockets. The rockets are launched stomping on a 2 Litre bottle which creates enough air pressure to eject the rocket. Students experimented with a range of variables to create a rocket design which flew the greatest distance. Fin and cone shapes and a range of materials were tested to see the effect on the flight time. We had some great designs with amazing results!
Year 6 Intake Day/Evening
are looking
On 6th July, we welcomed our 2022 intake students to Lostock Hall Academy. 155 Year 6 students met their form tutors for the very first time and experienced a day in the life of a student at LHA. In the evening, we invited our 2022 intake parents to an information evening. It was fantastic to meet all our new students and families and forward to seeing you all again in September!

Forest
A small group of Year 8 students have been taking part in our Forest School initiative. This learning experience has helped students to develop communication, confidence, teamwork and practical skills, as well as a greater understanding of the environment. The activities have included collecting natural materials, lighting fires, cooking on an open fire and building shelters. All the student have enjoyed it immensely and were sad it had to end. The last session was spent making tools on the shave horse, playing games, climbing trees, toasting marshmallows to make smores and chilling in hammocks. Well done to all, you made a great team. High School Musical After months of preparation the cast, crew and musicians were ready and raring to go! The production involved over 80 students and staff both on stage and behind the scenes. What a show!! The cast were amazing and everyone commented on their brilliant performances. The musicians were fantastic, and the crew kept everything moving, lit and heard!! It was a brilliant team effort with staff and students supporting in the run-up to the show with set painting, costume designs, t-shirt printing, ticket sales, publicity and choreography.
Thank you to everyone who made it such a success and to everyone who came and supported us. See our Facebook page for more https://www.facebook.com/lostockacademyphotos.

Grow Winners 2022!
Yes, we did it! Thanks to the support of our school community we have won the Dobbies initiative and are looking forward to seeing the garden developing over the next 12 months.
LHA Gardening Club Update -
Our completed projects so far this year include the following:- landscaping of our memorial bed and planters, sowing 3 wildflower beds at the front of school to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, constructing a compost bin and planters using wood from pallets, planting onions, beetroot and potatoes, and tending to the 5 new trees planted by the Eco Club. It has been a very busy year and we have seen a bumper crop of redcurrants, blackcurants and raspberries from our well established fruit bushes. Our gardening club has been well supported by a small but dedicated team who have worked with enthusiasm and good humour. A special thank you to Mr Gill who has supported us this year and also taught our students some joinery skills along the way. New members are always welcome, and the gardening club is already looking forward to getting back to the allotment in September. Eco Schools at LHA
Mrs Semple and the Eco Schools team
Helping Your Community
The Eco Schools team have certainly been busy over the last few months and have been doing a fabulous job. Just some of the developments that we have been involved in include creating the LHA Eco Code. You can see this below and it is going to be displayed around school to remind students and staff of how we all need to act. We have also been successful in improving the recycling capabilities here at LHA. From September, there will be recycling bins for plastic around school and we would encourage all students to use these if they have single use plastic to get rid of. These bins will be monitored initially by the Eco Schools team to make sure that they are being used correctly, as plastic contaminated by other rubbish can’t be recycled. Further to this, we would like to encourage all students to bring a refillable water bottle to school as, following successful lobbying by the Eco Schools group, there will be no single use plastic bottles sold by the canteen from September. We are very proud to have achieved this as this, along with our new plastic recycling bins, will massively reduce the amount of waste that is produced by Finally,LHA. we want to share some very exciting news with you. We are receiving over 600 hedging trees after October half term. These will include hawthorn, blackthorn, rowan and guelder-rose, chosen for their flowers and berries to attract pollinators and birds, and provide homes for small creatures. They will also absorb carbon dioxide as they grow. We want to invite you all –students, parents and carers, grandparents and friends to bring a spade and help us to plant these trees. More details of the date and time will follow in the October newsletter – please keep a look out.

LHA Eco Code The truth is: the natural world is changing. And we are totally dependent on that world. It provides our food, water and air. It is the most precious thing we have and we need to defend it.” ― Sir David Attenborough Here at LHA we strive to defend our world by reducing our carbon footprint, improving biodiversity and increasing Wesustainability.canalldothis by: Reducing, reusing, repurposing, refusing and recycling Reducing our use of single use plastic Bringing a reusable water bottle to school Turning off lights and electronic equipment when not in use Putting our litter in the correct bin and recycling where possible Walking or cycling to school where possible Considering what we eat and where it comes from Eating what we need and wasting less food

Year 10 Geography Trip Year 10 geography students have completed their fieldwork today at Cleveleys. Students have been testing longshore drift by throwing oranges into the sea and measuring how far they travel in a certain amount of time. They’ve also measured the height of sand on either side of the groynes (a little wooden fence) to determine the direction of longshore drift and whether the groynes are effective. They have evaluated the coastal management strategies to see whether or not they are effective. Well Done Year 7 students Lucas and Sherif were awarded special Core Value Certificates in our end of year awards assembly for outstanding behaviour, maturity and commitment to the local community. The 2 boys helped a gentleman in distress in the street on their way home from school who required medical attention. They phoned for an ambulance and they stayed with the patient until help arrived. Well done boys. Lostock HaLL academy’s core VaLues Lostock HaLL academy’s core VaLues

Sorrento 2022 In May this year, 28 students left LHA to travel to Sorrento, Italy for a fun filled 3 days of Geographical learning. Up bright and early, we arrived in Italy and went to Fondo-Gallatea Working Farm where students were given a live demonstration of how to make olive oil, and mozzarella cheese. Students then used the fresh ingredients to make their own pizza’s before having a tour of the farm, where lemons, oranges and a whole host of different fruits and vegetables are grown organically in the fertile soils (due to Vesuvius’ eruption many years ago). After this, we arrived at our hotel and had time to explore the town before having a paddle at the local beach. Day 2 was taken up with a journey to Capri, learning about the history of Capri and taking in a boat tour around the island. Students learnt about the rock formations, and we even travelled under the natural arch in the boat. On arrival back at the mainland, we went to an gelateria (Ice-cream shop) where we made and sampled lemon sorbet and chocolate ice cream and a couple of different flavours from the shop floor. Day 3 was a hike up Vesuvius, tour of the crater and a visit to Pompeii - the archaeological site which has been excavated from under a mud flow after the 79AD eruption. This was fascinating as after all this time, they are still excavating sections of the town! We travelled back and went to the beach again for a refreshing paddle. Day 4 we were up very early to travel home. We certainly packed a lot into the time we were there!

Last week 26 Year 10 and 11 students had the opportunity to visit Poland. The trip allowed students the opportunity to see the Nazi Extermination Camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau, visit Oscar Schindler’s factory and enjoy the guided tour of Poland’s famous salt mine. Students also engaged with the cultural history of Krakow, as we toured the city centre seeing sights like the Medieval Castle and the Jewish District. Students were a credit to the History Department and represented LHA exceptionally well.

Sports Day 2022 Sports day ran for the first time since the pandemic and what a superb event it turned out to be. All students from Years 7-10 were invited to get involved to win points for their form. Year 7 and 8 students completed their track and field events over the course of Periods 1 and 2. Year 9 and 10 students followed during Periods 3 and 4. Thank you to all of the staff from across the Academy who gave up their time to help run the events and support the students throughout the day. It was a really busy programme of events with several races involving 4 or 5 heats to find the fastest eight qualifiers for the finals. All students and staff then came out onto the school field during Period 5 to watch the track finals followed by the relay races for each year group. Students were also all able to enjoy an iced drink in the sunshine courtesy of the school catering team! The behaviour and attitude of students throughout the day was excellent and we look forward to organising additional large scale sporting events such as these in the future! See our Facebook page for more photos coming soon. https://www.facebook.com/lostockacademy

•“We have far more in common with each other than that which divides us.”
•God’s good earth?
Year 9 have been taking part in a national competition called Spirited Arts. They were asked to reflect on a theme and produce a piece of artwork based on this with an explanation to show their thought processes. This years themes were:
I had some wonderful thoughtful responses on everything ranging from equality/LGBTQ/racism to environmental damage/human responsibility to how and why people searching for meaning and/or God. I have submitted the entries and we will find out in September whether any of our students were successful however I have to say regardless of the competition I was very impressed by the quality and thought shown in some pieces.
