TEACHING STRUCTURE

• Our focus for the Summer 2 is to get the children ready for Year 6.

• To do this, we have daily maths, English and reading lessons, focusing on the children's individual needs and closing any gaps.

• Mrs Southern is currently supporting in Year 5 for maths, English and reading.

• The children are currently split for maths and Mrs Southern takes a group from across the year group for reading and English.

• We have lots of interventions also going on to further support children (spelling, maths, reading).

• Other curriculum subjects such as art, Science and history are taught in the children's normal classes.

• Good communication between teachers across groups.

END OF YEAR EXPECTATIONS

Book recommendations >

Reading Throughout Year 5, we have covered a range of different genres including fiction, non-fiction and poetry. In any assessments the children complete, they will need to be confident in understanding different types of text.

This year, we have looked at: Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls Arthur and the Golden Rope Viking Kennings

Inference

How do you know that Odd’s father had been a master of the axe?

E.g. ‘I know he was a master of the axe because he had built himself a cabin from logs in the forest – not everyone is able to do this so he must be a skilled woodcutter. Odd’s father could also make large items e.g. wooden dwellings or boats. I also know that he enjoyed working with wood – it says that in winter he often sat by the fire and made smaller items such as toys and bowls.’

HPL

As a school, we have adopted the High Performance Learning framework (HPL) in order to underpin all aspects of our curriculum and school life, and support the children in how to behave and how to think. The HPL framework support Chapelford's core values:

Collaborative (HPL)

Helpful

Aspirations

Perseverance (HPL)

Enterprising (HPL)

Listening

Fearless

Open-minded (HPL)

Resilience (HPL)

Dynamic

HPL

These values help to shape our children into confident, capable and independent learners and are used to remind the children of their potential at every learning opportunity.

For example:

 Helpful – fosters empathy, teamwork and peer learning which helps to build a positive and collaborative classroom culture.

 Perseverance – helps children to work through difficult tasks and promotes a growth mindset and reduces the fear of failure.

 Enterprising and creativity – encourages risk-tasking and builds their confidence in initiating ideas which supports their independent thinking and curiosity.

HPL

In addition to our values, we have also introduced the Advanced Cognitive Performance Characteristics (ACPs) which are high-level thinking skills that our children develop over time.

These include:

Meta-thinking – Thinking about their own thinking and being aware of how they learn and making strategic decisions.

Linking – Making connections between different ideas and subjects.

Analysing – Breaking information into parts, examining relationships and patterns.

Creating – Being inventive, producing original ideas or products.

Realising – Understanding concepts deeply and applying them effectively.

The ACPSs help to support children's learning by promoting a deep understanding by making cross-curriculum links and help to build transferable skills for high school and beyond.

SUPPORT AT HOME

We always appreciate your support at home. Here are some ways you can support us.

Establish a Consistent Routine: Create a structured daily routine that includes time for homework, leisure activities, and a healthy balance of rest. Consistency helps your child manage their time effectively and reduces stress.

Create a Learning-Friendly Environment: Designate a quiet, organized space for study and homework. Ensure it's free from distractions and stocked with necessary supplies like pens, paper, and reference materials.

Embrace Technology Wisely: Leverage educational apps and online resources to supplement learning. Set screen time limits and ensure your child uses technology for both educational and recreational purposes.

Promote a Healthy Lifestyle: Encourage physical activity and a balanced diet. A healthy body supports a healthy mind, enhancing your child's overall well-being and focus.

Celebrate Achievements: Recognise and celebrate your child's achievements, whether big or small. Positive reinforcement boosts their confidence and motivation to excel.

Be a Role Model: Demonstrate a growth mindset by embracing challenges and learning opportunities in your own life. Your resilience and dedication will inspire your child to do the same.

HOME LEARNING

Homework will be set every Friday and will be due in the following Thursday.

Homework for Year 6:

- Weekly maths task

- Weekly spelling task including 5 Common Exception Words

- Either Grammar or Reading comprehension task (alternating weekly)

- Reading 3 times a week and recording this in their Homework Diary

Offer guidance with homework assignments but avoid doing the work for them.

Encourage independence and problem-solving skills by asking questions and providing resources when needed.
