David Wansey Headmaster

David Wansey has been a Headmaster for over 20 years, and Head of Durlston Court School since 2000. With his ‘hands on’ management style, David enjoys getting to know every pupil through his timetabled lessons, sports coaching and individual updates. He is a dynamic leader who works closely with the tenured and experienced staff at the school.

Durlston has an impressive academic tradition, of which we are proud. National Curriculum guidelines are followed in Key Stages 1 and 2, following which children are prepared for Entrance and Scholarship Examinations at 11+ and 13+, excellent preparation for the Higher Level Exams that will come later.

Durlston Court Pre Prep. encompasses the Kindergarten, Reception and Years 1 and 2, based in its own designated buildings and play areas within the school grounds. The happiness and sense of purpose that pervades the Pre Prep. ensures that every boy and girl gets the opportunity to be the best that he or she can be.

Children of 2 and 3 years of age are welcomed into Lower Kindergarten and they will have their 4th birthday in Upper Kindergarten. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, paying particular attention to Personal, Social and Emotional Development. We also lay the foundations for reading, writing and numeracy, physical development, creativity and a strong sense of curiosity, all supported by a qualified Early Years Teacher and experienced support staff.

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, we have two parallel, mixed-ability classes in each year group. The children work in bright and spacious classrooms and enjoy a broad and balanced curriculum. There are Interactive Whiteboards in every classroom, a well-resourced and exciting library, a fabulous playground and a Secret Garden with amphitheatre.

Senior School Staff teach music, games and art. Dance is a vibrant and energising part of our school week in which every child and teacher participates with enthusiasm.

The Prep. School encompasses Years 3 to 8, with Years 3 to 5 based in a dedicated ‘Middle School’ and Years 6 to 8 based in the main school building. The Prep School has a clear focus on helping pupils to gain successful entry to their Parents’ first choice of senior school, and has an excellent track record of success, including many scholarships awarded each year.

Children are taught core subjects by their Form Teacher, with specialist teaching in P.E., Games, Music, Art, Design Technology, I.T. and French.

Children are taught almost exclusively by specialist Heads of Department in well equipped subject Classrooms. In addition, there is a Science Laboratory, two-storey Library, Art & Design Centre, Two I.T. Suites, Music School, Chapel, Sports Hall and All-Weather Astroturf. The final two years of a Durlston Education (aged 11-13 years) bring significant opportunities for accepting responsibility and leadership. A vibrant House system is in place throughout the Prep. School, engendering team spirit and healthy competition. Seniors have leadership opportunities both within their House and, in addition, as School Prefects. At 11, Durlstonians have access to their own ‘Senior Common Room’, equipped with Recreational facilities for enjoyment in their free time.

Information and Communication Technology is an integral part of the learning process at Durlston. In addition to specialist I.T. lessons, children are encouraged to incorporate use of I.T. in other subjects also. The school’s impressive I.T. Suites house 50 networked P.C.’s. Furthermore, there are Interactive Whiteboards in all form rooms.

Foreign Languages are introduced at the age of 7. All children learn French and most learn Latin. A Spanish taster course is introduced in Year 8.

Music represents another of Durlston’s strengths. Most children learn to play at least one musical instrument and class music is taught by the Director of Music in our purpose-built Music School. There are three flourishing choirs, an orchestra and a Jazz Band, in addition to a large number of ensemble groups. Class Concerts are held each term. In addition to class music lessons, individual lessons are taken by a dedicated team of specialist peripatetic music teachers.

Drama plays an important role within the school. Children gain much confidence from the experience of performing in public, and dramatic productions are varied and ambitious.

Durlston has a well-established and impressive sporting reputation. Sport plays a key part of the school curriculum, with daily sports coaching and lessons instilling team spirit and confidence, and providing the opportunity to represent Durlston in inter-school matches.

The major sports are rugby, football and hockey (boys) and netball and hockey (girls) in the winter, and, cricket, rounders, athletics, tennis and swimming in the summer. The facilities are extensive, with a well equipped Sports Hall, a multi-use Astroturf and heated outdoor swimming pool.

Preparation for Senior School As a Preparatory School, we are committed to “preparing” our pupils, in every way, for their first choice Senior School and are proud of our successful track record of achievement. Durlston Court continues to feed a large number of senior schools and has excellent links with many of the leading schools in the South of England. The Headmaster works closely with parents, discussing the many routes available and offering advice and guidance, in order that a pupil’s abilities are best served and happiness assured.

Each pupil’s academic progress is carefully monitored and communication with parents is continuous. Reports are produced half termly and there are formal consultation evenings annually. However, we regard the process of education as an on-going partnership between home and school and we therefore welcome the opportunity to discuss children’s progress at any time. Each year group has parent led class representatives who act as another contact for parents as well as organising regular social meetings. There is also a thriving Parents’ Association and plentiful opportunities to meet socially with staff and parents throughout the school year.
