On joining us at West Hill Park School, your child will be welcomed into a warm and supportive community in which everyone is valued and where we show respect and care for one another. Our overriding aim at West Hill Park is to ensure the happiness of the boys and girls. From their first steps towards independent life in our Early Years setting, our pupils develop the skills to grasp the many opportunities we offer, the confidence to realise their potential and the independence which prepares them for future life. School days should be among the most rewarding days of your child’s life and within our stimulating and secure environment we provide a rich experience, academically, culturally and spiritually.

Headmaster Alastair Ramsay MSc BEd (Hons)

We embrace our school motto ‘Omne bonum dei donum’ – every good thing is a gift of God – and do our very best for every child in our care. We take great pride in our pupils’ achievements, both in the classroom and beyond. West Hill Park School West Hill Park School

Investigating and learning Excellent academic performance is central to the school’s ethos. However, we are careful not to measure children by academic achievement alone and place real value on the breadth of experience they gain. Effort, enthusiasm and conduct are highly esteemed and the resulting growth in confidence is the key to unlocking other accomplishments. SETTING AND STREAMING Up to Year 4, our classes are currently taught in mixed ability groups with differentiation to at least three levels. From Year 5, we use formal and informal assessment to stream pupils in their academic subjects. In this way, each child’s individual strengths and weaknesses are catered for both academically and socially. LEARNING SUPPORT Children are routinely monitored and those who require extra help with their learning receive a combination of in-class support from specialist teaching staff, classroom assistants and small group sessions. Specialist staff, based at school, are available to give individual sessions if requested. E.A.L. English as an additional language is taught in support of the curriculum when necessary.

Creating and performing ART, DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY, DANCE, DRAMA, COMPUTING AND MUSIC A warm, friendly atmosphere encourages exploration and self-expression in our lessons. Art, Design and Technology, Dance, Drama, Computing and Music all stimulate creativity and imagination. They provide visual, tactile and sensory experiences and different ways of understanding and responding to the world. Pupils use their developing skills in Early Years and continue, throughout their time at the school, to communicate what they see, feel and think.

Boarding Boarding is a home from home whether you are a full boarder, a regular flexi boarder, or board for the occasional night. Our emphasis is very much on the children being happy and having fun. There are activities each night and trips on Sunday, with time set aside for study, music practice and quiet relaxation. With a dedicated team of house parents, matrons and duty boarding staff, there is a firm but fair routine, giving children the consistency on which they thrive.

They are

Sport We are careful to make every child feel valued when participating, but at the same time are keen to advance those children with more ability to the peak of their potential. Games and PE are an important part of life at West Hill Park and the curriculum supports the healthy physical development of each child. Extensive sports fields, a floodlit astro hockey surface, heated indoor swimming pool, netball and tennis courts all provide the necessary facilities to allow us to compete at a high level with independent schools locally and also at county and national levels.

Contained within the extensive school grounds, an established woodland classroom provides a safe outdoor learning environment. Two yurts, an extensive fire and cooking area and infinite possibilities for shelter building, provide pupils with the facilities to explore and discover together. We believe every child should have access to the outdoors enabling them to play, take calculated risks and explore the vibrant reality of our natural environment.

Challenging and experiencing EXTRA-CURRICULAR Breadth and diversity are crucial to the philosophy of West Hill Park. We encourage children to take every opportunity life brings and to appreciate the world around them. The extensive activities programme epitomises the school’s attitude that children are capable of anything, if only we let them try.

Moving on with confidence As children progress through the school, they are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning, and their contribution to school life. They grow to understand their importance in the community, both through instruction and example. This provides them with a strong platform, from which they can confidently move into their senior school as independent, self-reliant individuals. As a truly independent preparatory school, we thoroughly prepare children for Scholarships, Common Entrance and 11+ exams. Recent scholarships have included Academic, Music, All Round, Design and Technology, Art and Sport and have been to schools including Harrow, Eton, Winchester, Canford, Clayesmore, Dauntseys, Millfield and St Swithun’s as well as the local Grammar schools.
