Garden Companions in this book. Marigold flowers are a best friend to almost every garden vegetable! Their very strong fragrance is stronger than the smell of vegetables. Pesky bugs eat the pretty marigolds instead of eating the vegetables planted nearby! How kind! Corn and snap peas are good garden friends! Corn stalks are tall and strong. They let the snap pea plant wind all the way up to the tippy top; giving the pea plant the support it needs to grow! Both marigolds and corn help their close friends. You can too! They help by protecting and being strong. You can care for your friends by sticking up for them when they are picked on and letting them play with you, especially when they feel sad or lonely. You can be a kind and supportive friend! Proof Copy: Not optimized for high quality printing or digital distribution

Meet the artist: Rachael Van Dyke lives with her husband in a tiny house in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her home is very tiny- about the size of most kitchens! It is also off the grid. That means, she collects rain water off the roof of her house to wash her dishes and clean her paint brushes. The house has electricity made from the sun using solar panels. Every day in the winter Rachael collects firewood and heats up her little house with a wood stove. Rachael's work is inspired by the many hikes she takes in the mountains. She also enjoys bicycling and photographing all of the beautiful old barns, farmhouses and animals in the fields. She is learning, just like you, about growing her own vegetables and flower gardens!
