School’s Own Adventure. It’s all in the name! Our experienced education professionals and school travel experts are here to provide busy teachers with all the help they need to offer affordable, appropriate, enjoyable and safe field trips to Croatia and surrounding Central European destinations. We have a number of ready-made itineraries for outdoor adventure, GCSE, A-level and IB courses but are equally happy to produce a bespoke programme. This adventure in learning is your own to plan and develop. You set the objectives and decide how much help with planning you need. The valuable in school support we give makes School’s Own Adventure unique.

Safety first, second and third‌ 1 Tours will be carried out in accordance with Dept. for Education guidelines and Health and Safety Executive advice on educational visits. 2 Our Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments can be shared with governing bodies, parents and students and downloaded from the client log in area on our website. 3 Tour planning will take into account the specific needs of your students and risk assessments can be tailored to meet individual needs. 4 Each programme is organised by an experienced Course Manager who is the main point of contact in country for school staff. 5 Our leaders are trained and experienced in the activities for which they are responsible, have first-aid knowledge and training and can summon medical help, should this ever be necessary. 6 Health and safety equipment such as life-jackets and helmets are provided and their use is made compulsory where required. 7 We have full Professional Liability Insurance. 8 Accompanying school staff will remain in loco parentis throughout the trip. School’s Own Adventure staff have a duty of care to the students and school staff on the trip, and have the responsibility for the technical aspects of the expedition. School staff will also provide the important pastoral support to students. 9 Our leaders are trained in behaviour management and will remain with the group throughout the programme. Put simply, we have the systems and procedures in place to reassure you, your students, parents and governors that the visit will be a safe, high quality learning experience.

Sample itinerary for 7 day Geography tour Day 1

Arrive Zagreb. Transfer to Kezele Farmstead (1 hr)

Days 2 - 3

2 days in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park • River Sava boat trip • Examine an ox-bow lake and the effects on flora and fauna. Collect, analyse and compare data from various points of the River Sava • Collect and analyse data relating to wetland forests, marsh and grassland • Analyse how changing river patterns affect human habitation • OPTIONS for evening: Wine tasting, movie or table tennis

Day 4

Day on Kezele Farmstead • OPTIONS: Discussions and practical sessions - bread-making or preserving food; viticulture and wine-making or homesteading/farming

Day 5

Drive to Gorski Kotor (1¾ hr) • OPTION Day rock climbing and abseiling or canoeing down the Kupa River or trekking. Accommodation at local Youth Hostel

Day 6

Drive to Plitvice Lakes (1¼ hrs) UNESCO World Heritage site

Day 7

Return to Zagreb • OPTION - depending on flight time, guided tour of Zagreb

Rafting down the Drava River • Swimming and lunch on the riverbank

Day 3

Adventure, skills development and D of E Expeditions Our 5 to 7 day camping or mountain hut based adventure activity programmes are suitable for all ages and can include climbing, abseiling, canoeing, trekking and white water rafting. For schools participating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, students can complete their Bronze, Silver and Gold qualifying expeditions in Croatia. All our adventure programmes promote ‘skills for life’: • Problem solving and decision making • Leadership and taking responsibility • Co-operation, other social skills and values • Communication and presentation skills • Self esteem, independence and enterprise • Practical skills - e.g. cooking • Personal health and risk awareness • Environmental awareness

Itinerary for Velebit Mountain trek (Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award) Day 1

Arrive Zagreb Airport • Bus to Jospidol (90 mins drive) • Area orientation brief - issue of equipment • Accommodation - Josipdol Hotel

Day 2

Transfer to Dabarski Kukovi (2 hrs) for mountain safety brief and revision of basic campcraft and navigation techniques if required • Accommodation - camping (with toilet facilities)

Day 3 - 5

3 day trek beginning from Dabarski Kukovi • Day 3 - 4 - wild camping • Day 5 - transfer back to Josipdol Hotel for debriefing • OPTION - disco evening

Day 6

Transfer to Zagreb - check in at student hostel. Zagreb City tour and free time • OPTION - Rafting down Mrežnica River

Day 7

If rafting on Day 7, then morning tour of Old Zagreb and free time • Depart Zagreb Airport

Arrive Zagreb • Bus to Varaždin and settle into accommodation • Team building exercises

Days 2 - 3

A 2 day trek in the Ivancˇica Mountains • Trekkers will hike along a chain of up to five 13th century castles originally built to repel the Mongols and then refortified to defend Christendom against the Ottomon Turks

Day 4

Paddle down the Drava River, the Amazon of Europe, in open canoes (www.amazon-of-europe.com) • Stops for swimming and lunch. Pull up the canoes mid-afternoon for bush craft and survival skills. Wild camp overnight

Day 5

Early morning trek up Ravna Gora • Simple climbing and via ferrata work to reach the peak with a panoramic view over the Julian Alps into Slovenia and Hungary Return to Zagreb • OPTION - depending on flight time, guided tour of Zagreb
