Scarabeus Theatre Aerial and physical theatre Scarabeus Aerial Theatre works with children, young people and families, teaching aerial skills, physical theatre, yoga and stilts and creating high quality, innovative and imaginative participatory performance projects. Their workshops are practical and hands on for young participants - in particular providing an opportunity for them to be creative, to experience challenge, adventure, risk-taking and personal development in a safe environment. “Scarabeus promoted the importance of risk-taking for participants – taking the children out of their comfort zone. The outcomes of the project were outstanding.” Lawrence Price, Head of Keys Meadow Primary School

“The children loved linking work in the classroom to the theatre performance – reading results have rocketed.” Andrea Koutsou, Year 5 teacher Hargrave Park Primary School

“Our experience with Scarabeus was unequivocally successful.” Mark Morrel, Head Chingford Foundation Secondary School

Their work extends the learning experience beyond the classroom, to make the curriculum more exciting and fun. There are natural links in all their work to PSHE, but often the theatre work provides the best opportunities for cross-curricular learning, linking to literacy, DT, science, art. Developing greater confidence, trust skills and teamwork is all part of the journey, which in turn helps pupils become interested in learning. With 6 years experience of delivering successful workshops, residencies and performances for children and young people in schools and community settings (including young people with disabilities) they have a proud history of developing successful long-term partnerships with schools and Creative Partnerships. Please see website for further details. Previous projects have included: Beyond Flying – A major project with Chingford Foundation School, that used aerial work and theatre to help young people express their experiences of violence and bullying. The Seagull and the Cat who taught her to fly – Working with Year 5 students, this project took the acclaimed novel by Luis Sepulveda and recreated it as an original promenade performance in different locations around the school, tackling issues of difference and achieving goals that at first seem impossible through teamwork. Feather Boy – A project to help young people with the transition from primary school to secondary school which worked closely with the school to link the process of creation of the piece to the curriculum, involving the popular children’s author of the Feather Boy novel, Nicky Singer. Airborne Families – A parental engagement scheme, run in conjunction with Unclassified Arts, that has run in over 40 London schools and encourages bonding between children and parents through theatre games, yoga and aerial techniques.

10

These projects can be delivered during term-time, after hours and during school holidays. Other options and commissions are possible according to the needs of your school and young people.

Silk Roads is a non-profit arts and educational organisation with specialist expertise in arts and traditions from the Muslim world. They offer workshops, demonstrations and performances and their work has particular relevance for schools exploring world cultures or Islamic culture. The artists are handpicked, professional practitioners in storytelling, arts and crafts, Middle-Eastern music and dance, and are equally experienced as educators. Workshops aim to entertain, inspire, include and encourage cultural tolerance and are suitable for all age groups, genders and backgrounds. “All the children and adults involved had a fantastic day and I’ve already had some great feedback from both my colleagues and the children. They were particularly impressed by the fact that all the children were involved and taking part somehow – which, considering the number of children, was quite an achievement!” Nasreen Khan,

Workshops can be run as part-day or whole day, or as extended projects. They encourage workshops to lead towards an informal school sharing or formal performance. Their workshops have led to children sharing with Ealing Youth Orchestra, recording original work to be broadcast on Resonance FM, performing onstage at Shakespeare Globe Theatre in front of 800 people, and exhibiting their work at Basingstoke’s World Arts festival. One of their popular workshop formats is to combine multidisciplinary activities (storytelling, music, dance, arts) with two or more facilitators to deliver a richly layered narrative performance: the children can take on devising, storytelling, physical theatre, music, dance, costume and prop making. This format can be designed for large numbers of participants. All workshops can include whole classes. Choose from: • Tales from the Silk Roads – multi-disciplinary and interactive workshops which can encompass storytelling, music, arts and crafts, puppetry, and dance and leading to a performance or sharing (2-4 facilitators) • Middle-Eastern drumming (1 facilitator) • Middle-Eastern storytelling with Sufi frame drumming (1-2 facilitators) • Middle-Eastern drumming and Dabka dance (1-2 facilitators) • Dabka - traditional Middle-Eastern line step dance (1 facilitator) • Arts and crafts - calligraphy, textile arts, weaving, batik, sacred geometry (1 facilitator) All performances can be interactive. You can book a special performance for an assembly or event from the following: • Storytelling – interactive performances with stories adapted from Thousand and One Nights, spiritual/Sufi stories and mythic poems. • Arab Folkloric Dance – Middle-Eastern dance is not just bellydance – from group line dances to ‘stick’ dances. • Music from the Silk Roads – music with traditional instruments such as Arabic percussion, reedflute, and oud – the ancestor of the guitar. WORKSHOP LEADERS - Silk Roads’ leaders are leading and award-winning exponents of their craft. Khaled Hakim is a musician and the only teacher of Sufi frame-drumming in the UK.

Workshops and after-school clubs offered include Drama, Dance, Circus, Poetry and Songwriting. Themes are explored through improvisation, devising and discussion, often leading to structured pieces and performance. Dance – Street, Jazz, Funk and Freestyle. Here children can learn specific techniques and then get to develop their own personal styles. Never underestimate the power of dance in expressing your soul! Its benefits are bestowed on individuals and groups alike. Circus – Basic skills include clowning, juggling, unicycling, stilt walking, hula-hooping. Children develop excellent focus and co-ordination through highly enjoyable, artistic means. They also learn the value of perseverance and practice. Poetry (or "Spoken Word") – Helping children to tap into their thoughts and share their ideas through word is a lovely process, allowing personal impressions to be captured that might otherwise be forgotten. Performance is encouraged. Songwriting – Students are guided on how to construct a song for performance, whilst letting them be inventive and keep ownership of what they create. Children who may not want to sing, but still want to write songs are wholly welcome here too. Have you got a themed event coming up in school? Rakhi Sood Indian Dance/ Music Workshops

Mitel Purohit Indian Percussion Workshops Mitel Purohit is an experienced Indian percussion workshop leader in London schools, and currently one the most sought after Indian percussionists in the UK. The tabla is a popular Indian percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music and in popular and devotional music across the Indian subcontinent. The instrument consists of a pair of hand drums of contrasting sizes and timbres.

Rakhi Sood is a professional artist, teacher, performer and choreographer and offers the very best dance tuition for a variety of styles including Kathak, Bollywood and Bhangra. She has established a reputation for the excellent quality of the tuition she provides and the original and innovative methods she employs. She has maintained her burning passion for the performing arts since an early age and attempts to impart this to all her students. She studied the performing arts as well as achieving professional qualifications in both the classical dance style of Kathak and the art of Sitar playing. Rakhi believes that for any teacher, grounding in classical dance is essential. “To begin to teach forms and styles of dance it is first essential to have a good foundation yourself. It is my aim to not just teach dance, but to also allow students to gain an understanding of the differences between good and bad dance.” Her tantalizing choreography is an alluring fusion of contemporary Kathak blended with various dance flavour’s and heritages from around the world.

Like any percussion instrument it lends itself to group work and the playing technique can be developed from a simple finger tap right through to extensive use of the fingers and palms in various configurations to create a wide variety of intricate sounds. The heel of the hand is used to apply pressure or in a sliding motion on the larger drum so that the pitch is changed during the sound's decay. Tabla workshops provide an exhilarating learning experience that will help your pupils appreciate Indian culture while experiencing traditional Asian drumming rhythms and percussion based music. Pupils will benefit from expert instruction and fully participate in a rousing and collaborative group experience. Workshops can be half day or full day and held as one-off events or regularly throughout the term. Workshops are ideal for large or small groups of any ability level and all equipment is provided.

Her charisma and charm lies in the beauty of her work which is visually enchanting and spiritually enhancing. Having learnt dance and the Sitar from some of the great gurus, she stands as an independent choreographer and dance teacher. Rakhi can work with small or large groups and can perform workshops as one off events or regular weekly sessions as part of the curriculum, as PPA cover or after school clubs.

TARU devises and produces: • Tailor-made projects to suit any time frame and budget • Projects for schools, pre-school, after-school and youth groups • One-day activities (festivals, fun days and summer events) ‘Learn as you play’ is their approach to inspire and motivate participants to be engaged within their community, express themselves creatively and respect and care for their environment. Fun, inclusive and exciting, workshops focus on participation. Activities develop team-working skills, selfconfidence and self-esteem and celebrate creativity and cultural diversity. Created for early years, primary and secondary schools, programmes are tailor-made to link to the National Curriculum and enhance and complement the school’s values and educational context. Programmes are also useful for involving your school in a community event. One of their signature projects is Scrap Kingdom Party, a recycling carnival project. Involving a series of fantastic workshops including music and drumming, dance and costume and giant puppet making using recycled materials, the project culminates in an authentic outdoor Brazilian style carnival parade, a spectacular product of all of the participants’ creative contributions. Whether a one-day or long-term project, the process inspires and motivates participants to create an outcome with a ‘wow’ factor. Other projects offered by TARU Arts: FUN-TASTIC! Sociable workshops for Under Fives and their parents and carers to learn, play and explore together. Encouraging creativity and curiosity and stimulating development and progression of skills. Well-balanced and themed sessions involving games, storytelling, drama, arts and crafts, rhymes, singing and dancing. CAPOEIRA. An Afro-Brazilian martial art that combines dance, acrobatics and music. Taught as a non-contact game of inclusion and cooperation, it is ideal for encouraging interaction, team-building, respect for others and selfconfidence. Suitable for all ages and abilities, it improves fitness and well-being. FASHION SHOW. Children are invited to bring in recycled materials and with TARU’s artists design and create their own line of beautiful and colourful clothes, costumes and accessories in preparation for a show. JUNK FACTORY. From recycled materials, children design and make a piece of art, a cool recycling site or an installation for their school. Great legacy projects for year six pupils.

Amigo’s Magic - Fundraising Events Discos, School Fairs & Parties Are you on a PTA or another committee where it’s you and six others that end up doing all the work? Would you like to put on an event, that is fun, exciting, and different and where all the leg work is done for you? Most importantly would you like to make some decent money for your current school fundraising project? Then look no further as Simon from Amigos Magic has created dynamic family magic shows to turn incredible family fun into hundreds or even thousands of pounds for your next fundraiser and best of all it won’t cost you anything! “As a Chair of the School PTA for Virgo Fidelis Preparatory School, we have used Amigo’s Magic on a number of occasions. The events have always been successful, fun, interactive, enjoyable and well attended. The feedback from parents and students is always positive. I would highly recommend Simon (Amigo’s Magic) to other PTA’s or fundraising events – you will not be disappointed.” Tony Barnaby, Virgo Fidelis Preparatory School

You’ll know you made the correct decision to include the Family Comedy Magic Show as part of your fund-raising plans when you hear the laughter and see the smiles on the faces of your audience. And you’ll be stunned as you count just how much money you raise for your school from this incredibly fun and e-a-s-y event. This is a practically self-working program for you as Amigos Magic will supply everything you need to make the event a success including, Posters, Flyers, Tickets, Announcements, Magic Kit, World Class Family Entertainment and a free report on additional ways to make money with the show! “My Children really enjoyed your school disco (and rate it as the best one yet) hope your diary is not yet filled as I want to book you for the Spring Disco.” Secretary, Notre Dame Catholic Primary School

Discos – Have you ever put on a school disco that didn’t quite hit the mark? Simon has a unique way of getting everyone up and dancing (even if they don’t realise it) by getting them all involved with his balloon stamping game, where they all run around stamping on each others balloons. He then gets their coordination going with Spinning Plates which is followed by dance competitions, the Conga, the world famous rubbish game (you have to see it to believe it) and the recycling game. This is followed by the Limbo and other great songs. The reason Simon’s Discos are such a big hit is that everyone is involved from start to finish and by involving everyone no one gets left out and everyone has a great time.

22

Simon also offers one or two hour magic show packages for school Fetes and Fairs. The one hour show starts with an interactive 45 minute magic show with plenty of pantomime style audience participation. For the two hour show Simon does an hour of magic and then teaches the children Plate Spinning, plate passing and plate jumping which they will remember for years to come. This is followed by interactive games, balloon races, magic circles, and other old favourites. Both parties finish with Simon making balloon models for the children; anything from swords, dogs, swans, etc. Parties can also incorporate a Mini Disco.

Beeja South Asian Dance and Drama Workshops Beeja means ‘seed’ in Hindi. It carries with it a sense of transformation and the start of life. In keeping with its name, the company Beeja aims to generate new ideas and creative ways of working with South Asian dance theater forms.

“Beeja’s contribution was inspiring and professional, enabling 30 young and inexperienced pupils to perform a piece of real artistic quality and value at a major local theatre.” Soo Beer Music Co-ordinator, The Priory and Advanced Skills Teacher for LB of Merton

“Both teachers and staff thoroughly enjoyed the workshops you carried out in schools I have never seen the children so inspired and deeply involved in their dancing. It was lovely.” Rachel Cooke, Moorlands School Southampton

Beeja a collective, draws on the skills of its members — bharatanatyam, bollywood, Indian folk, body conditioning like pilates and yoga, visual arts, music and design — as well as including storytellers and spoken text. It seeks to develop a distinctive way of working that will offer an all-round experience. Beeja choreographs for a diverse range of traditional and innovative spaces and has performed in major theatres, museums and even the London Underground. Beeja creates workshops and residencies for professionals, schools, hospitals, special needs groups and corporate employees. The idea is to create new experiences for the audience, new forms and performers by creating work for new environments. Beeja’s workshops and residencies aim to share the enjoyment of dance, drama and music inspired by South Asian artistic practice. Beeja has extensive experience in working in a wide variety of educational and community setting – schools, museums & community centres. In bharatanatyam workshops the participants experience movements that capture the alignment and expressive beauty of the form. All sessions are accompanied by a percussionist on 'mridungam', a south Indian drum. Activities include experiencing the basic principles of rhythm and melody; enhancing interpersonal skills by working on the emotive aspect of this dance theatre; exploring creative aspects of dance in relation to a relevant topic, or theme. Beeja can deliver One day, or half a day workshops or after school clubs and theme based residencies. The workshop format is devised in consultation with the organisers ensuring that the participants get opportunity to experience and explore the form in a creative and enjoyable manner. Ideally these are conducted by a dancer and a musician or two dancers.

Defcon Workshops Confidence through music Defcon Workshops are all about helping young people to think positively about themselves and their future, while learning from talented young professionals. Defcon’s experienced tutors demonstrate how easily accessible music and the arts can be to anyone. Their workshops cover everything from lyric writing and music production to DJing and drumming. Wider issues such as careers, health issues and welfare are also explored in the relaxed and friendly sessions, with personal guidance offered where required. “All I can say is if you haven’t used Defcon, then you haven’t used the best.” Justin Wanstall, Senior Youth Worker, Riverside Youth Centre, Canterbury

“The outstanding factor during your performance was the inclusion of children and young people who requested to join in and perform their own pieces, written and produced that very day. Incredible, and testament to Defcon’s natural ability to draw out the hidden skills, achieving trust, rapport and positive mentoring with challenging groups.” Cormac Martin, Co-ordinator, Kent Children’s Fund

“Defcon deliver a key service that provides young people with real opportunities.” The Princes Trust

Defcon began in 2004 at the Young People’s Development Programme on the White City Estate in London, a pilot scheme that aimed to reintegrate children excluded from education. Following several sessions with the young people, feedback from both students and teachers at the centre was phenomenal. The results highlighted that a project like this is a perfect way to provide an outlet of expression for a young person – building their self-esteem and confidence regardless of background. Within the last 4-5 years, the project has been taken throughout the UK, to benefit young people in both schools and youth organisations. The workshops are run by a collective of professional musicians and artists, who understand, and can relate to, the youngsters’ issues and aspirations and are supportive and encouraging tutors. So what goes on in a workshop? – Defcon explores the practical aspects of making music. It’s a hands-on experience using turntables, microphones, synthesizers and keyboards, laptop production systems and percussion. The energy kicks off right from the start! To get the most out of each session, individuals are asked which skill they would like to try first, and they then go to work in smaller groups centred on each skill. They can try everything, and are free to change their choice and move group. What if you’ve never made music before? – Everyone, at some point, has hummed to a tune, tapped, clapped or clicked to a beat, so everybody has musical potential within him or herself. Defcon takes an informal approach, giving participants a relaxed atmosphere where they can really go for it! The tutors will never force anyone to perform or record if they don’t feel they want to. However, sometime’s all that’s needed is a little confidence boost, and Defcon’s tutors are understanding and skilled at channelling both confidence and untapped talent. Skills taught include: DJ Skills, Production/recording, MCing, Creative writing, Singing, Beatboxing, Percussion, Steel pan, Film Making.

Workabooks Homework Made Simple Workabooks are a range of 10 homework books in literacy and mathematics. There are 5 books for each subject for Years 2 to 6. They will simplify how you set homework and maximise the opportunities for learning and revision.

“I can’t imagine us doing homework any other way now.” Jo Puddy Wells, Head Teacher “Workabooks are perfect for consolidating, practising and revisiting what’s been learned in the classroom. They are a really good learning resource.” Mrs S Nettey, Head Teacher, Princess Frederica Primary School, Brent, London

“Implementing both literacy and numeracy works out at about 26p per child per week. I think that is money well spent!” Ian Young, Head Teacher

Workabooks are bought and issued by schools, with every child having their own copy to keep and complete. Each week, teachers can select which Workabook tasks to set as homework. These are divided into learning exercises, practice exercises and thinking tasks: • Learning exercises are manageable, bite-sized chunks of learning • Practice exercises consolidate class work and reinforce the learning facts • Thinking tasks apply the learning to everyday life Most children should be able to complete one of each of these tasks every week within the homework times suggested by the DCFS; the content complies with the Revised Primary National Strategies. Schools like the fact that they offer a simple, single solution to implementing homework; they’re using them to establish consistent standards of homework school-wide. Teachers like Workabooks because they simplify the setting of homework and dramatically reduce preparation time. With Workabooks, homework becomes an extension of classwork, consolidating the work already done. Children take pride in owning their own Workabook and get a sense of achievement from working their way through the tasks. Workabooks introduce them to the responsibilities of managing their time and working independently. Over the course of the year, their Workabooks build into a record of their personal work and achievements. Parents and carers are enthusiastic about Workabooks because they can see clearly what their child is learning. This clarity and simplicity encourages them to get even more involved in their child’s education.

Whether it’s done at home or in an after-school club, alone or with help, Workabook homework is always engaging, always relevant.

Mosaic Art Ltd. Collaborative Art Mosaic Art Ltd is a collective of professional and experienced artists who work with schools to create sitespecific artwork, which is installed in the school grounds. Their projects are individually tailored and provide a practical and collaborative approach to the national curriculum requirements. They can be adapted to all levels and bring together different disciplines.

“Every day I see girls gathered around the mosaic and it has become a real focal point for the school. The mosaic is a great source of pride for the school and everyone involved. Tamara and Sylvia utterly fulfilled what we set out to do and really made the history of the school come alive in mosaic. Judith Woodings, Head of Art, Marymount School, Kingston upon Thames

Participants learn about the materials, the making process, and the basic skills. They then work together to make their own designs come alive in mosaic. The use of simple geometric building blocks has proved to be a valuable teaching tool, which helps to develop spatial awareness and manual dexterity. Children of all abilities and disabilities can excel and we have found that taking part is a rewarding experience for all involved. Groups develop a sense of unity as well as pride and ownership in the resulting artwork. With former project themes ranging from local life and exploring nature to the history of the school, Mosaic Art Ltd offer an inclusive and alternative way to engage children in learning. Projects start from one day to several full days of fun depending on the scale of the work. The large scale projects champion the benefits of teamwork and encourage appreciation and respect for all cultures while the impressive end product yields a sense of achievement for all.

46

To get the most from the project the company requires a brief consultation that determines where the piece will be situated (interior or exterior) how many children you wish to involve, the age group and the topics or themes to explore. This mutual understanding ensures that the project can be carried out inline with the design and time requirements of the school. The projects are suited to both primary and secondary school ages, and give children the chance to take part in the entire creative process from the initial idea through to the rewarding conclusion, with results that promise to stand the test of time.

Smarty Paints Pottery Painting Studio Smarty Paints are a fun and creative pottery painting studio in Wandsworth, South London. Pottery painting has been an art form since Ancient Greece and they enthusiastically continue this wonderful creative expression. Smarty Paints love people painting whether young or old and believe that everyone has artistic ability; they just need the encouragement and chance to discover it.

“Our Year 6 children had the most fabulous time at Smarty Paints celebrating the end of their 11+ exams. They loved designing and painting a commemorative plate to celebrate the wonderful time they have had at Finton House. I know that they will treasure their plates and can't thank Smarty Paints enough for all their kindness and assistance during the time we spent with them. I'm already looking forward to next year's trip.” Karol-An Kirkman, Finton House

Pottery painting is fun and easy but is also challenging because you are painting a 3D object and the technique to painting pottery is different from ordinary painting. It is exciting to get the pottery back after the glazing and firing process which makes the colours more vibrant and the surface smooth; quite different to what is seen when painting. Each painted item is unique and will keep forever. The paint used is a non-toxic pottery paint, which is totally safe. The glaze is unleaded. All pottery is totally useable whether it is a plate, tile or any of the other 100 items. Pottery is left to glaze and fire and ready to collect one week later. Visit us – School visits to the Smarty Paints studio are very popular as a way to broaden any curriculum project or topic or just for fun. Workshops at the studio include: • • • •

Introduction to painting pottery. Painting a pottery item of your choice. Tour of the glazing and kiln area. Cold drinks for children, hot drinks for the teachers

The studio is near both Wandsworth and Clapham Common, which provide an ideal place to get some fresh air or have your packed lunch after the painting session. Packed lunch can also be taken at the studio. Some examples of how some schools have enjoyed Smarty Paints workshops: • Finton House School Yr6, painted plates with the school’s emblem as a leaver’s memento. • Northcote Lodge School Yr3-Yr6, painted Halloween items as a reward activity with their tutor group. • St Helens Primary School Yr6, painted tea plates for Art Week British artists theme. • Cambridge House Disability Services Yr3-Adults, painted tiles as an activity within their Summer Activity Programme

48

Visiting you – Smarty Paints can take pottery painting into your classroom. You just need to provide tables, chairs and water! The paint does not stain and washes off surfaces and clothes very easily.

Artyface Mosaics, Ceramic and Painted Murals

teacher, Bonner Primary School, Tower Hamlets

Artyface is an experienced, dynamic professional and inspirational community arts organization (with a pool of 10 specialists), led by artist Maud Milton. They were front cover of The Independent Education Supplement summer 2010 and their ceramic and mosaic projects have really excelled over the past years. Artyface specialise in transforming public and private spaces. Their expertise is ceramics and mosaics, as well as painted projects. Working closely with the community ensures the finished work is a legacy that belongs to you and is of a very high quality: the projects are drawn, designed and made with pupils. Artyface facilitate people of all ages and abilities working together in teams, co-operating and communicating with teachers, parents, dinner ladies, cleaners and even siblings and grandparents participating. They are experts at working with your ideas, budgets, enthusiasm and space. Projects enrich education, teaching many different skills, teamwork, discovering, developing and nurturing talents. Some are quick and easy to run, whereas others are fantastic, legacy projects that take longer to make. Every project is bespoke. Winn’s Primary School’s project involved every child going to draw local historical buildings. With the pupils participation, Artyface artists translated these into wonderful clay tiles and mosaics for a huge mural for the playground including William Morris motifs on the border as he lived locally. Other themes have included anniversaries; the local area; celebrating the theory of evolution; endangered species worldwide; multi-cultural patterns - inspired by the Quilt exhibition at the Victoria and Albert: but your theme can be anything. Costs and timescale vary depending on materials and size etc. All projects boost the arts and other curriculum targets, building bridges between people, places and organizations. Some murals build links between secondary schools and their feeder primaries, others simply transform a dull area into a more beautiful place which everyone can be proud of. Artyface teachers are all experienced at communication, research, teaching and making, as well as being inspiring and empathetic to work with, bringing new skills, volunteers, partners and enthusiasm into your school.

The Tropical Zoo Animal Encounters for School The Tropical Zoo attracts thousands of visitors each year, who enjoy the permanent exhibition of animals from every tropical region on earth. By combining fun and education, they aim to spread the message of conservation to a wider audience. Many of their animals are rescued from the illegal pet trade, private collectors or zoos, where their specific needs could not be met. The Tropical Zoo provides a safe haven for rescued and endangered animals and work hard to maintain an ideal environment for each species. People are becoming aware of the importance of the rainforest to our survival in the developed world. Forests breathe life into our world, shielding us from the worst effects of global warming, providing plant life that forms the basis of research into drugs to prevent or cure many serious illnesses. The rich diversity of life from the forest floor to the tallest canopy is dependent on our commitment to conservation now and in the future. The Tropical Zoo is a permanent exhibition of exotic animals and a centre for rescued and endangered species. Animal Encounters form an important part of the school trip experience and every effort is made to ensure that every visitor meets an exotic animal - close up! School trips engage the next generation of conservation minded youngsters and motivates them to learn by stimulating their imagination and arousing curiosity through physical interaction with the subject. With a blend of interactive, hands-on experience, they have so much fun that work becomes play. Schools receive an exclusive package including a half hour talk with hands-on encounters with animals in a purpose built lecture theatre. There are four talks to choose from: Lifecycles, Mini-Beasts, Conservation, and Rainforest. The animals used for handling include Snakes, Lizards, Mini-Beasts, Owls, Frogs and Baby Crocodiles. Different talks involve different animals. The Schools Education Pack contains teachers’ notes and a workbook for children with lots of interesting exercises. Children also enjoy exploring the exhibition, which includes displays of Marmosets, Birds, Fish, Reptiles and Amphibians, where they can feed the fish and the tortoises. There are also Pond Dipping and Picnic Areas. If transport is a problem, you can arrange a Roadshow, when The Tropical Zoo can come to your school. An experienced handler will encourage the children to touch the animals under safe supervision. They bring the creatures to you and explain their habits and environment to your group. The Roadshow is tailored to the age and curriculum requirements of your group and if you wish to discuss your requirements in advance The Tropical Zoo team can ensure the children enjoy an exciting, interactive learning experience to satisfy your needs. All Animal Encounters are supervised to ensure your safety and minimise any stress to the animals.

Education involves getting out of the classroom to discover information on a practical level. Legislation and rising costs mean that practical external activities for children are becoming harder to obtain. Impeyan hope to compensate for this by providing valuable and practical experiential learning within the school environment. A mixture of different Impeyan animals can encompass themes such as camouflage, habitat, biodiversity, food chains, texture (very good for visually impaired/special needs students) and many other topics included in all key stages of the National Curriculum. All Impeyan presentations aim to encourage an interest in the natural world, promote conservation and to help finance breeding projects for many rare and endangered animals.

Surrey Docks Farm Working city farm Surrey Docks Farm, in the heart of London with the Thames Path running through it, provides pupils with unique opportunities to learn about farming and food production. Animals reared on the farm include milking goats, sheep, cows, pigs, ducks, geese, chickens, turkeys, bees and donkeys – with always careful attention to animal welfare and visitor hygiene. In its unique setting, the farm is an ideal resource for educational and environmental activities throughout the year. “Thanks for an excellent day out. The children loved seeing, touching and especially feeding the animals. We would love to come back in the Spring when there are lambs and piglets. Highly recommended.” Grant Perry, Teacher, Ivydale Primary School, Year 4

First established 500 metres downstream in 1975 on vacant land by Greenland Dock, the farm started raising livestock and producing food from what was regarded as wasteland. The farm moved to its present 2.2-acre site on the Thames at South Wharf in 1986: it’s a community asset used by a wide cross section of people and has an excellent educational reputation. School visits to the farm These are tailored to support the National Curriculum and specific teacher requirements. Half-day activities can be followed by lunch in the classroom and a set activity. • Farm tour – Children learn more about where their food comes from and discuss the origins of different foods such as meat, eggs, milk, bread and vegetables. • Apple tasting and pressing – Best in the Autumn...learn about the varieties of apple on the farm, and use the special equipment to mash and press them for the juice. • Goat’s milk and butter making – (Spring/Summer) Pupils can try milking the goats and making butter, then discuss dairy products and their part in a balanced diet. • Bee trail – Explore the life of a bee, pollination and bee products. Includes honey tasting and candle making. • Vegetable trail, planting and growing – Discuss the plants grown on farms and their uses in food. Children will sow seeds in a pot to take away with them to care for. • Composting and recycling – Pupils learn about what goes into a compost heap and the mini-beasts that live there. They will sieve their own compost and sow seeds. • Fabulous felt – A chance to learn about the uses of wool, meet the sheep, card wool and create their own piece of felt in this practical and fun workshop. Self-led activities Add to your visit by incorporating several self-guided activities, including a scavenger hunt and photo/sensory trail cards to investigate the farm further. Or you can visit resident blacksmith Kevin Boys on his working urban forge.

Liam Moore, a commercial farmer for more than 30 years, introduces an exciting educational experience for young children. Inspired by observing his own children and their love of learning on the farm, he has created this unique service that brings the farmyard to the school ground. Liam uses his life experience and knowledge of farming to guide and motivate pupils to understand animals – how we use them, the food and clothing we obtain from them, their place in history and our modern society. “Having the laying hens and the chicks in our school was a great asset to the children’s learning. It meant that the activities that we carried out were practical and had more meaning. We could use the hens as a basis for our literacy work, such as life cycles, instructions and diary writing. Liam was great, too. The children asked him many questions and he was always on hand to help. I would thoroughly recommend it!” Holtspur School, Beaconsfield

Creature Curriculum Adding life to lessons

Mobile Farm Workshops – Experience a day of fun and learning with a visit from the Creature Curriculum Roadshow. Designed to complement and enhance the teaching of the National Curriculum, workshops are designed around topics being studied in the classroom. Add value to your lessons with a mini farm – Mini farms provide children with a longer term active experience of caring for animals, introducing them to a new forum for observation and learning. Pupils of all ages can benefit. English is encouraged as new experiences are described and recorded. Maths comes alive, as feed intakes and growth rates of living animals are calculated. Science becomes actionpacked as children study how animals behave and adapt. Geography takes on new meaning as pupils discover the origin and habitats of animals. Design and Technology develops as classes can help plan and construct their own mini farm. How does it work? – Creature Curriculum can install and maintain a welfare-friendly mini farm within the school grounds, ensuring that both the teachers and the pupils have all the support they need. Children are involved in the setting up and running of their very own working farm. They will experience rearing chicks, lambs and piglets as well as producing and collecting their own free-range eggs. When school breaks up they take your farm away. Imaginative teachers will be able to devise a host of lessons that can be reinforced with this living world. Bookworm – Someone who enjoys reading books and gains knowledge from the written word

Content linked to Key Stages 2, 3 & 4 of the National Science Curriculum and cross-linked to Maths & Citizenship curricula. Cells are the building blocks of life. They are so tiny you can’t see them with your eyes and there are so many in your body you can’t count them. Cells work together to make you think, move, talk, laugh and be you. A single cell made you... The make-up of our bodies, the processes that make us grow and stay alive and healthy, are all explored by Centre of the Cell through ground breaking digital interactive games, films, microscopes & body parts. The Centre of the Cell ‘Pod’ is dramatically suspended above the futuristic laboratories. Centre of the Cell allows students to access Curriculum specific information in a truly informative and engaging way. Beyond the biology books – Through the Centre’s Learning Facilitators, interactive microscopes, real-life case studies and interactive games – all set within a ‘live’ biomedical research laboratory – you can be sure that your students will be stimulated by both the content and surroundings. Working scientists also take part in school sessions at the Centre. The ‘Pod’ at the Centre takes up to 40 people at a time. Your pupils will have the chance to explore, question and learn the basics, and beyond, about fertility, cell reproduction, birth, disease, medical research and healthcare. Bubblz! Making Maths FUN! Can you imagine making maths fun for your children? Using soap bubbles, balloons and a Bubblz! Maths Clown you can! Picture your children estimating how many of them will fit inside a cubic metre, and seeing the glee on their faces as they test out their guesses by getting in. What if your children visualised 3D shapes and then made them out of balloons? Can you even imagine a soap bubble in the shape of a cube? You won’t need to imagine, when a Bubblz! Maths Clown visits your school! The MLS (Mathematical Learning Systems) program, based on mathematical thinking, uses hands-on workshops, shows and assemblies. It has been developed with over 100,000 teachers and learners in schools. Resources have been cowritten with mathematical learning experts from Cambridge University and Bubblz! have run CPD sessions at schools and maths conferences in the UK, Europe and Africa since 2006. INSET (Primary) – Let's suppose you have INSET sessions followed by receiving additional resource packs. There you are, with focused, enthusiastic children, exploring maths using bendy straws, old newspapers, bits of string AND bubbles! Each and every child enjoying the activity at their own level of attainment.

What others say about their Bubblz! Maths Clown experiences: “The boys were enthralled. They had great fun and did lots of Maths. Thank you.” M. Willcok, St. Columba's, Herts “Bubblz! bubbled maths concepts very easily in every child’s mind.” Mrs Dutta, Risley Avenue Primary, London “We have always found Bubblz brings fun maths and lots of ideas for both teachers and pupils. A most valuable resource during our annual maths week.” Jeanette Scott, Maths Leader, Burhill School, Surrey

Maths Workshops (5 years and up) – What if your children used balloons for measuring exercises? Zen Machine Introducing Go, The Ultimate Brain Game Zen Machine was established by Peter Wendes MA(Ed), Vice President of The British Go Association, and his wife, Sheila. Their unique, active, engaging, educational and fun workshops have toured schools, colleges, museums, and festivals for the last ten years inspiring new Go players and Go clubs across the land! Simple rules lead to astonishing possibilities!

“I’m really impressed with the pitch of the workshop and your innate ability to tailor the presentation to the ability of the pupils and get them 'hooked' and thinking. The workshop provided such a brilliant learning opportunity that was really measurable by the concentration from the pupils and enjoyment of playing.” Andrea Broadbent, Tameside Excellence Cluster Manager

This mysterious and intriguing game, Go, began over 3,000 years ago in China. It is the second most popular board game on Earth. In East Asia the game has the status of a mental martial art. Go professionals are national celebrities and tournaments offer big prizes. Expert players still beat computers at high levels. The recent BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Why Go?’ featured Peter and Sheila’s groundbreaking work with children in Hampshire, and explored the history and rationale behind it. Workshops are suitable for all ages and abilities. Large groups of up to 100 can learn and play together. Two or more groups can participate in a full day. Multi-schools events, such as transition are an option. Moving between demonstrations, hands-on experimentation, film clips, question and answer, and individual and group play, everyone will discover surprises and puzzles in this ancient game. Go is accessible at many levels and teachers are delighted to find everyone able to participate successfully. The more able pupils see vast creative possibilities, start up clubs, take part in tournaments and even continue learning about Go for the rest of their lives. The less formally academic discover they have the ability to think ‘out of the box’ successfully. Go is an excellent tool for looking at learning, patterns, space, efficiency, balance and judgment. Strategies and tactics are investigated. Pupils gain confidence and insight. Any particular topics you choose can be linked into the presentation.

60

Go requires logic, respect, reason, flexibility, discipline and creativity. It has been a metaphor for life, war, economics, business and philosophy in its long history. The presenters are experienced teachers. It’s a dynamic show! Puppets help out with younger learners and mind-boggling facts and numbers astonish the budding geniuses of tomorrow. Einstein himself was a Go player! Keen beginners can develop skills by setting up a school Go club, entering the annual UK Go Challenge for Schools, or joining one of the seven London clubs. Some of our past pupils are now strong players with opportunities at local, national and international tournaments.

Science Dome Mobile Science Discovery Centre Science Dome explores science, geology and geography in an interactive way using the latest full dome 360 degree projection equipment. Science Dome visits schools providing an additional science resource and presenting a different learning experience to children. They provide fully digital mobile planetarium and natural history shows, utilising a purpose-built mobile dome situated in your school hall, or the UK’s first dome designed for exterior use.

“The presentation was adapted well for the needs of the school. The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by both children and adults! There was a buzz for days afterwards.” “We were delighted with the presentation. It supported the children’s learning and even from an adult point of view was amazing. Thank you.” Teacher Feedback A full day visit can include up to five class shows and there are a number of engaging and informative programmes to choose from, suitable for every year group including: 1. Solar System Tour and Beyond - KS2/3 2. Space Exploration (Apollo Moon Landings) - KS1/2 3. Dinosaur Show - KS1/2/3 4. Rocks, Soils and Fossils - KS2/3 5. Earth and Beyond - KS1/2 6. Light/Dark and Space - KS1 7. Light and Sound - KS1/2 8. Ancient Egypt (or Greece) and the Stars - KS1/2 9. Under the Sea - KS1/2 10. Pirates and the Sea - KS1 11. Fractal Dome (Maths and Natural Symmetry) - KS2/3 12. Down to Earth (Fossils and Earth's History) - KS1/2 13. Nano Cam Show (Biodiversity at Micro-level) - KS2/3 The innovative Dinosaur Show for example includes dinosaur pictures in 3D using 3D glasses (provided) and also real dinosaur fossils to handle and examine. The giant 180 degree projector is used to walk through a dinosaur landscape. The show starts with time travel back to the Jurassic times and pictures of early Earth landscapes. It then gives an interactive introduction to dinosaurs and talks about the fossils in the local Jurassic coast. The show ends with possible explanations for dinosaur extinction such as a large meteorite. They then look at the stars using the planetarium and observe many shooting stars and the night sky. Shows are typically 45 minutes in length but can be longer for older pupils. The Rocks and Fossils programme is one hour and includes samples to hold. Infant Schools are recommended to have 30-35 minutes for Reception and Y1. Please ensure you plan your schools event early with us, as they can take booking 6 to 8 months in advance. Certain dates during a term can be very busy. Content is constantly being developed, and covers many subjects. New additions to the Science Dome programme are four full-surround films using a new 360-degree projection system from the USA. These films wrap around and over the viewer on the whole surface of the dome, and are the type of films presented in fixed planetariums in science centres, but they will bring them to your school!

Maths Inspiration Lecture shows for teenagers Maths Inspiration gives Year 11s and sixth formers a chance to experience the UK's most inspiring maths speakers live, in big venues, presenting mathematics in the context of exciting, real-world situations. Set up in 2004, the shows now attract over 12,000 pupils per year, and many schools make this their big STEM outing of the year.

“. . . the most informative, funny and engaging lectures I’ve gone to see.” Year 12 student, Nottingham “Awesome!” Year 11, Reading

The shows are held in inspirational theatres and concert halls, and all have the same format: three interactive talks on topics that can range from the maths of designing rollercoasters to the links between maths and psychology. The shows last just under three hours, including a short interval and a lively Q&A session at the end. There's normally a choice of morning or afternoon shows. The speakers are all high quality presenters with plenty of experience giving talks to teenagers, and who have applied maths in diverse and fascinating ways within their careers. Maths Inspiration not only provides a high quality maths field trip, but feedback from teachers and students has also confirmed that the entertaining but educational way in which the events are run can have a long-term impact on the attitudes of students to maths.

What about younger audiences? If you want a flavour of the Maths Inspiration experience for pupils in Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3, some of their speakers are available to travel to schools to give age-appropriate talks: Rob Eastaway is the author of several bestselling books including Why Do Buses Come in Threes? and Maths for Mums & Dads. Rob gives maths and magic talks for primary children, and a variety of talks (on topics ranging from games and mind-reading to music) for Year 7 upwards. Contact him via his website www.robeastaway.com Matt Parker is a former teacher and now a stand-up comedian. Matt can tailor his highly motivational talks about The Simpsons, the fourth dimension and magic to all age groups. Contact him via his website www.standupmaths.com

Einstein's Entertainers Making Science Fun Einstein's Entertainers offer a variety of science based activities to suit your occasion and have worked with schools charities and uniformed groups across the UK. They can tailor workshops to suit specific requirements and also perform a number of assemblies and shows including Atomic Assembly, Frozen Explosions or just an amazing show packed with favourite experiments. Assemblies are free to new schools that want to start an after school science club, but can also be arranged as one off performances. “I have made up my mind now to be a scientist when I am older, it is so much fun! I can study science and then I can even work at Einstein's Entertainers, can't I?” Ben “It was so funny when we used the machine that made everyone's hair stand up they looked really silly.” Laura “I have never had so much fun ever at a club, I look forward to it so much and I have found out so many amazing things, I don't want it to end!” Amy

Their engaging and fun workshops stimulate interest in science and support the national curriculum and include: Slimy Science, Exciting Electricity, Science vs. Magic, Push & Pull Olympics, Incredible Insects, Spaceman, CSI, The Sounds of Science, The Science of Light. National Science and Engineering Week this year is 11th – 20th March 2011, but they are available to come in any time to help your science week run smoothly. Their material is designed to back up and build on the National Curriculum and has been put together in partnership with schools and teachers, inspiring young minds with a passion for science. Whether blasting off rockets, watching sparks fly or getting to grips with the slimy gross world of polymers, they strive for excellence and sciencetastic hilarity every time. Einstein’s Entertainers after school clubs operate in many schools across the London, Surrey, Kent and the South East demonstrating scientific principles through fun, hands-on experimentation. They are also proud to be affiliated with The British Science Association and CLEAPSS. Most of the lessons include something for the young scientists to take home and enjoy. The topics covered offer a great variety and all follow the National Curriculum. At completion of the course, all children get a certificate for each different module, which they can treasure for years to come, and display with pride. The After School programme can be adapted to fit into your school calendar with a normal programme consisting of 8 club sessions once a week, each an hour long. Each lesson builds on what has been learned in the previous class so your young scientist can build their scientific knowledge. The science programmes run in the school classrooms and Einstein’s Entertainers are very sensitive to the fact that classrooms must be left if the condition that they are found. As such they clean up after every class to ensure that they are left spotless.

64

Einstein’s Entertainers are extremely thrilled to be nominated for the 2011 "What's on 4 Junior Awards in association with Konfidence". The award rewards and recognises the people and companies providing the best activities for children across the UK. Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience What was it like during World War II? How did it feel to be a British Citizen? What did people eat and wear? Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Museum answers these questions and more. It recreates the London Blitz with special effects highlighting the sights, the sounds, the artefacts, and even the dust, smoke and smell of an air raid at its height.

“Spot on for National curriculum for all age groups – quite amazing!” Dr. Anthony Freeman, Government, History Advisor

“I thought I was back in the war, it was unbelievable. All children should visit this nostalgic and moving experience to see what it was really like for the ordinary people during World War 2.” Dame Vera Lynn

The museum has an astonishing collection of evocative photographs and an enormous number of actual relics. Everything from toilet rolls and soap to an Anderson shelter, you can sit in and hear air raids overhead. There are shops displaying what was available for purchase during the war years and a feature devoted to Winston Churchill. The education packs available for primary schools include activity sheets intended to support National History Curriculum Key Stage 2 Core Study Unit 4 - Britain Since 1930. The particular emphasis is on the experience and impact of the Second World War in Britain and covers topics including: Sheltering in the Underground, Gas Masks, Anderson Shelters Rationing, Fighting Fires, Evacuation, and The Blackout. For secondary schools activity sheets are linked with the main themes of ‘Britain at War Experience’ and form part of the study programme for the History National Curriculum key stage 3, Core Study unit 5 - The era of the Second World War with particular emphasis on the experience and impact of war, and the home front in Britain. There are four titles: ‘Air Raid precautions’ ‘Andersons and the Underground’ ‘Women in Wartime’ and ‘The Blitz’. Each unit includes an introduction to the area of study and acts as a stimulus to further enquiry. The suggested activities are of varying levels of difficulty and may be used for individual work or group discussion. They invite pupils to develop their understanding of the Second World War, to think about the experiences that are recreated in the Supplement and to explore their own attitudes and reactions.

68

The museum allows pupils to use a range of historical Artefacts, Documents, Posters, Printed Resources, Pictures and photographs, Film Music and Sound Recordings. Tasks have been designed with National Curriculum Attainment Targets in mind, but are not connected to specific targets or levels, as these will vary according to the age and ability of each group.

The 25th. Bomb Disposal Co. Royal Engineers was formed on May 8th 2004 to portray the little known story of the Bomb Disposal Companies of the Royal Engineers, operating between 1939 – 1945. At the start of WWII, and early into 1940, the job of bomb disposal fell to the Air Raid Department & Civil Defence Corps. The Royal Engineer units were officially formed 11th May of that year. The group provide a realistic and invaluable educational interpretation of bomb disposal in WWII.

25th Bomb Disposal Co. Royal Engineers Living History Group

“The 25th Bomb Disposal Unit is a committed team of professionals who work hard to recreate the unique experience of the blitz and its legacy of the unexploded bomb. Their meticulous and historically accurate presentations and reenactment provides as close to real life experience as you could wish for and also underlines the brave work of the pioneers of bomb disposal and the continuing dedication of combat engineers working in war zones today.”

In September 1940, after just two weeks of the Blitz, there were more than 3,700 unexploded bombs waiting to be dealt with in London alone. The unknown quantity of these UXBs were crippling the nation: People were too frightened to return to their homes & factories central to the war effort, and key roads and railways were closed for fear of the damage that an explosion could cause. Armed with the most basic equipment & little information, the Newly formed Royal Engineer sections were sent out to extinguish the threats of UXBs. In some cases, these UXBs were to be defused ‘regardless of loss of life to bomb disposal personnel. The group is dedicated to keeping alive the memory of the work of the Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal units during WW11. They are based in Hampshire under the command of Capt. Mike Authers and provide static displays of inert ordnance with an Interactive course for children and they also re enact set piece scenarios & demonstrations , such as defusing UXBs, Butterfly bomb disposal, and how firebombs were dealt with. They are available for Educational School Talks including demonstrations of WWII Bomb Disposal. Typical School Visit includes: • An Explanation of the work of Bomb Disposal Soldiers in WW11 • Static Display of Ordnance – inert shells and bombs • Accurate demonstration of how bombs were defused • Types of fuses & typical booby traps • How mines were laid/ detected & defused. • DVD of WWII Govt. Yellow Earth offers a variety of school workshops using Chinese and East Asian art forms such as Beijing Opera, paper cutting, origami, shadow puppetry, Balinese masks and storytelling. These art forms are introduced in an accessible and fun way by experienced workshop leaders, creating a unique learning experience. All our facilitators are of an East Asian background bringing their unique culture and experience to you. They will be fully CRB checked and will have trained with the company. If you would like a language element (Mandarin or Cantonese) as part of the workshop please state when booking. Popular workshops include: Shadow Puppets – Lights, Screens and Magic – This workshop introduces the ancient art of Chinese Shadow Puppets and paper cutting. The children make their own shadow puppets and paper cuts and perform with them in a traditional Chinese tale behind the screen. Storytelling – The Nightingale – A specially designed interactive storytelling workshop based on the beautiful story of The Nightingale. Set in China when the Emperor still ruled, the story takes place on the eve of New Year with all its accompanying traditions. Beijing Opera – A practical introduction to the principles of this unique form of traditional Chinese theatre and a chance to explore how some of these key elements can be used in the students own drama work. Balinese Masks – Using the half masks of the Balinese Topeng, students will be introduced to this ancient and revered art form and have a chance to create their own contemporary characters.

They also offer Chinese Dance and Music workshops, Calligraphy and Origami. Yellow Earth has worked in partnership with community groups, schools, colleges, drama schools and heritage organisations and is always looking to work in partnership with schools to create a programme to suit you.

The Bank of England Museum’s education programme is designed to support aspects of teaching in several curriculum areas for key stages 2 and above. It includes highly interactive cinema presentations, giving students the opportunity to ask questions and keeping them engaged and interested throughout. The presentations aim to improve pupils’ awareness of money and give them a better appreciation of their own spending and saving decisions. Presentations for younger children cover the history, function and value of money and concepts such as banking, changing prices and interest rates. Presentations for older students help them understand how everyone’s earning, spending, saving and work fit together to form the economy and how our individual activities help to shape the way the economy functions.

Heritage and Cultures

The Bank of England Museum Educational Programme

For secondary school students studying economics and business studies, the Museum offers a presentation on the role and functions of the Bank of England as the central bank of the United Kingdom. It consists of a twenty-minute film followed by a question and answer session in which the topics covered in the film can be explored in greater detail. The question and answer session can be tailored to meet the requirements of the group. Presentations are available to groups of between 15 and 50 students and are free of charge but their popularity means that they must be booked in advance (email education@bankofengland.co.uk). After the presentations, students can enjoy a fascinating visit to the Museum which includes audio-visuals and interactive displays. One of the most popular exhibits allows visitors to take control of a virtual hot air balloon to learn about setting interest rates. Other displays that never fail to amaze pupils of all ages are the one million pound note and the genuine gold bar that can be handled and lifted, although its 13 kg of weight will catch a few people by surprise. Activity sheets are available for all age groups. The Bank of England also offers two free resources for schools which are based on the materials used in the Museum’s presentations. For 9−11 year-olds, Pounds & Pence covers the history, function and value of money and concepts such as banking, changing prices and interest rates. The aim is to improve pupils’ awareness of money and prices in every day life and give them a better appreciation of their own spending and saving decisions. For 14–16 year-olds, Made of Money describes what the economy is, how it works, how it stays on track, and its everyday relevance to teenagers. Both resources comprise printed information and activity cards, a DVD / video and teachers’ notes. They cover the topics in an engaging and accessible style using examples and illustrations from daily life so that young people can easily relate the ideas to their own experiences. For more information or to download our activity sheets and Teaching Resources, please visit the website at www.bankofengland.co.uk/education.

Holocaust Survivor Stories London Jewish Cultural Centre Eye witness testimony from Holocaust survivors is the most powerful tool in raising awareness of the dangers of prejudice and racism. London Jewish Cultural Centre’s survivor speakers’ programme enables thousands of school children each year to hear and learn from these compelling stories of human endurance and man’s capacity to ill-treat his fellow man.

“Students were unanimous in the verdict that this was the most important historical experience they had ever had.” Vandean School, Kent “Without the visit the Holocaust would just seem like another history topic. It gave a reality to the subject which it is impossible to convey through textbooks.” La Sainte Union School, London

“Your story touched me in so many ways that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Arnita Manandhar, Year 11, Preston Manor High School

In 1994 Holocaust studies became a compulsory part of the school curriculum. This led the Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department of the London Jewish Cultural Centre to formalise its visiting speaker programme, formerly run on an ad hoc basis. Over the past 17 years the programme has gone from strength to strength, reaching out to schools throughout the country. In 2008/9 alone, Holocaust survivors gave direct testimony to over 15,000 students. Some 60 Holocaust survivors, not all of whom are Jewish, act as school speakers for us. They have endured a range of Holocaust experiences – kindertransport, the ghettos, hidden children, false passports, slave labour, camps. All speakers are people with direct experience of the Holocaust. They have been helped in the presentation of their story and in dealing with questions from both pupils and teachers. The LJCC Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department makes all the arrangements. Supported by a marvellous team of volunteer drivers, the department liaises with the schools, and requests feedback from students and teachers. Speakers give their time voluntarily, but all their travel expenses are met. Some are able to talk more frequently than others; how often they talk, and where, is entirely at each individual’s discretion.

74

Mindful of the survivors increasing age and frailty, an LJCC Legacy initiative has been launched to enable future generations to keep these testimonies alive, using recorded survivor tapes, personal reminiscences, photos, maps and other memorabilia. Meanwhile, if you have not heard a survivor speak, try to do so. The impact of direct testimony cannot be overestimated.

Health Matters Education Health Focus Day Health Matters Education is a national partner in supporting Change4Life. Their wide range of high quality teaching resources help schools to achieve and importantly maintain National Healthy Schools Status. With a 'whole school approach' in mind these inspiring cross curricular resources demonstrate how settings and schools can implement a more ‘active and creative’ EYFS and KS1/KS2 curriculum.

“This was great! The children learnt a lot through the active element and I picked up some ideas for teaching.” Year 6 teacher, West Felton Primary School “It was fantastic because we were making our hearts fit. A really fun way of learning about our body and food groups.” Year 2 pupil

Health Focus Day - With a ‘whole school approach’ in mind, Health Matters Education is available to support individual schools through the delivery of their unique Health Focus Days. Focus days include a whole school assembly, health related exercise sessions for all children and elements of CPD for school staff and are fun, educational and inspiring. This exciting initiative from Health Matters Education has been very well received by hundreds of schools across the UK. Their tutors display a genuine passion for children’s health and well being. They undergo a rigorous training and quality assurance programme to ensure they have the necessary skills to engage everyone and importantly demonstrate that they can generate a rapport with pupils and school staff.

Showcasing ideas for the implementation of a more ‘active and creative’ Early Years Foundation Stage (England), Foundation Phase (Wales) and KS1/KS2 Curriculum Elements of the day led by a specialist ‘Health Matters’ tutor includes: Whole school assembly - led by tutor. Opportunities for school staff to observe the ‘Busy Feet’ and ‘Health Matters’ resources in action through watching/participating in whole class demonstration lessons i.e. from Nursery through to Year 6. Opportunities to engage parents in a variety of workshops. Staff meeting - discussion and a closer look at the resources. Continual Professional Development tailored to suit the individual needs of your school staff.

• • • • •

The emphasis of the day is to provide staff and pupils with an insight into the ‘Health Matters’ and ‘Busy Feet’ programmes whilst providing all those that observe with a wealth of ideas and an understanding of how the resources work in practice. Some schools have welcomed this as an opportunity to recruit parents onto many of the varied workshops on offer. Throughout the day the Health Matters tutors will outline links between curriculum subjects and areas of learning, as this can deepen children’s understanding and make learning about health and fitness a real and exciting experience. With busy feet modules costing just £70 and Health Matters £60 per box they represent an excellent value for money resource for promoting and maintaining the health of your pupils.
