“The children and the staff loved it and have been talking about it ever since! It is great to provide the children with this experience and see them smile and enjoy themselves so much - this was down to you so thank you! I definitely hope to work with Drum Jam again in the future.” Gillian Butcher, James Oglethorpe School, Upminster
Their team of expert facilitators: · Will create rhythms and sing songs that will leave young people and teachers inspired and aware of their own ability to express rhythm. · Using Africa for inspiration, you will soon get to feel the beat of the Drum. Workshops are totally inclusive and can be tailored to suit any group from 5 to 1,500 of any age or ability level. As with most musical learning ‘achievement’ occurs on many levels. · Younger students will enjoy learning the basic techniques of beating a drum in time to a simple rhythm while older more dextrous students can attempt to master more complex rhythms and cross rhythms. · Even experienced drummers have plenty to learn so there is always something to challenge and achieve. The African music and drumming experience has a universal appeal and draws individuals together to become part of an organised team. · It engenders a sense of belonging to the group and also teaches reliance, responsibility, concentration and focus as everyone relies on each other to create and maintain the rhythm. · When the group begins to achieve its aims and produce the music it begins to adopt its own persona as the spirit of the drum captivates and galvanises. There is no better feeling than to be a part of the drum circle and it is a wonderful way of building self confidence and esteem. Drum Jam Education promote, introduce and support strong value systems by using the metaphor of the team beat drumming. All members of the circle are equal and dependant upon the actions of all others. Drumming also improves: · Physical grace and gross motor skills · Drumming has been proven to increase IQ, attention span and motivation.

David Hall Shakespeare & Drama: Unforgettable Workshops Drawing on his wide experience as a professional actor and teacher, David Hall delivers dynamic, inspiring and quite unforgettable workshops for all ages and abilities. Combining his trademark warmth, enthusiasm, and energy, he skilfully develops pupils’ skills and confidence, opens their eyes to new possibilities and leaves both them and their teachers with new and exciting approaches for all their future work.
“David is absolutely brilliant - in the largest sense of the word! He both ‘shines’ and knows all of the component parts of how to create a meaningful and exciting learning experience for students, one with as-we-go delights and longer-term and sustained applicability.” Steven Holt, participant, performer and teacher
David’s standard or bespoke workshops are always highly active, challenging - and great fun! Shakespeare – an actor’s approach opens his participants’ eyes and ears to performance clues, providing a dynamic new approach to studying and working with Shakespeare and others' texts. “Tuesday's workshop with David Hall was a huge success: enlightening and exciting - a pure clinic in Shakespearean acting!” Andrew Hamm, Richmond Shakespeare Co, Virginia
His Voice Workshops introduce challenging and fun exercises to enhance and develop vocal range, techniques, strength and variety and apply it to a wide variety of work... “It's amazing what a huge effect your coaching had on my performance. I was infinitely more comfortable and loose. It really did make all the difference.” Katharine Dain, singing student, Guildhall School of Music
...whilst his energetic and hugely enjoyable Physical Theatre Workshops leave students and teachers with a treasure-chest of techniques which may be applied to all their future work. “He built a wonderful arc of experience.”
David is also very happy to bring his unique and dynamic approach and experience to bear on existing projects, scenes, speeches or productions. Trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, with John Wright and others, David's career includes TV, voice-overs, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Young Vic, Trestle, the English Shakespeare Co, and the National Theatre. For the Original Shakespeare Co he performed in the first full-length cue-scripted productions since Shakespeare’s day (using the first folio text, punctuation and spelling) and he regularly presents his highly successful Science, Maths and History shows nationwide - see page 77. David also facilitates Leadership and Presence programs globally and his hugely popular drama workshops have proved a great success on both sides of the Atlantic! “I can say with complete confidence that David will engage his learners in a powerful way and that they will leave with not only new skills, but also a renewed excitement for the craft itself.” 10
Dynamic, spirited and great fun - David Hall’s workshops are not to be missed!

“It was very impressive how the dancers managed to engage the young teenagers.” Elephant Festival, Bournemouth
Shobana Jeyasingh’s choreography is about living today and reflects a society in which cultural identity; technological change and the blurring of traditional boundaries are dominant themes. Jeyasingh’s work provides an opportunity to explore everyday dilemmas through dance. This is work that encourages people to think and engage with the world around them. Her 2007 work Faultline is currently a set work on the AQA GCSE Dance Syllabus and will continue to be so for the next few years. Workshops enable a deeper insight and understanding of the work to be developed in order to benefit students’ GCSE studies and can be tailored to fit your exact requirements and budget. Although on the GCSE Dance syllabus, Faultline not only appeals to GCSE groups, it is also an ideal professional work for ‘A’ level and BTEC students to study and experience. Additional resources are available to support the teaching of Faultline, including a DVD (£30), which acts as a superb teaching aid to add value to lessons. It contains two beautifully filmed versions of the full-length performance. A wide shot allows the full stage action to be seen in totality; while a second edited version provides a detailed, close up look at the choreography. This is available to order directly from the office. A Faultline Resource Pack is available as a free download from www.shobanajeyasingh.co.uk and also a mini documentary ‘Creating Character’ (commissioned by ResCen at Middlesex University) in which the dancers give their views on the creation process for Faultline. An Interactive Student Guide to Faultline is available on CD Rom from ArtsPool (01622 719467) features include: • An overview and structure • Section by section movement analysis • Key motifs to use and development ideas • Ways to use Faultline for the performance element

Summer Fundraising Tour – During the summer months Fred’s Flying Circus visits the school with their ‘little’ Big Top and their fund raising package. The School sells tickets to the show at £6 or more which generates £1380 and a profit of £130 after circus costs of £1250. For a two day appearance the circus costs £1500 and revenues can approach £2760 leaving a profit of £1260. The Big Top is a single pole tent which is 50ft in diameter and requires a flat area of 75ft in diameter to erect and accommodate vehicles. The tent seats an audience of 230 and requires 8 sturdy adult helpers from school to help erect and dismantle. The circus arrives! At an arranged time they start work with a group of 20-25 children and work with this group in the Big Top, for ideally three hours, teaching them a number of clown and juggling routines which they will perform in front of their parents and a live audience that evening. The evening entertainment lasts 90 minutes and commences with the children’s show followed by an interval during which China Chi Chi and Fred arrange the scenery for their own circus show. A FAB time will be had by all! When the circus stays for two days or more, the day can be repeated with a new group of children.

Schools are encouraged to pursue the circus theme around the visit with poster, costume and Clown face designing competitions. Fred and China Chi Chi are often asked to give talks on performance and the history of Circus where they hold question and answer sessions and talk about their lives travelling around the world with the Circus.

Acting Technique Acting Workshops for Schools Acting Technique is owned by Karen Louise Hebden; a director, writer and acting coach. Karen has directed in the West End, toured the UK and was Artistic Director of leading regional repertory theatre Derby Playhouse for 9 years. Acting Technique has an exclusive set of workshops for schools, designed specifically to complement GCSE, A level Drama, Theatre Studies and English Literature, by bringing course work to life with knowledge and professional experience. “That was amazing. My students worked for you in a completely different way, than they ever do for me. You got them to go further and work harder than they have ever done before. We all learnt so much. Thank you.”
Head of Drama, Ashby School “For me, the workshop was extremely beneficial and opened my eyes to the commitments you have to make if you really want to become an actor. There were certainly times when I was brought out of my comfort zone, which made me realise that acting is definitely all about risk taking and undertaking challenges that push you to your limits!” Emma (17) The Howard School,
2010 workshop “The whole experience was great. I have never worked so hard and I learnt loads. I never thought I could get Shakespeare, but Karen brought it alive and made it seem not only easy to understand, but really exciting too.”
Lloyd (17) Sutton Valence, 2010 workshop
They offer 3 different workshops for schools which can be booked individually or as a series depending on requirements and budget. They are also happy to work with English and Drama teaching staff on bespoke workshops tailor made to a school’s particular requirements. Rehearsing Shakespeare – Many students find studying Shakespeare challenging. Shakespeare is sometimes viewed as hard, dull and difficult to make exciting to read or watch. This workshop is the antidote and as a rehearsal technique for Shakespeare and Elizabethan dramatists is physical and fun. Discover methods to bring characters and scenes to life, and through rehearsal, explore and deepen students’ awareness of Shakespeare’s text. Workshops can be tailored to a particular text if required. Audition/Exam Technique – Preparing a monologue for an exam or audition is a skill, learned like any other, but even some professional actors handle this process badly. Acting Technique’s goal is to maximise success by teaching students basic skills that will help them achieve their goals – be that a good grade in their A level, a place at drama school, university or their first acting job! The workshop treats each student to an audition/exam giving them a taste of a real audition environment with instant feedback on how to improve their chances of success.

Acting Through Song – Developing character and drama through song is an art that is underestimated by many. Acting Technique has worked with some of the finest musical theatre talent in the country including actors from Phantom, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Wicked and Love Never Dies. Their talent is honed by years of training, but some of the tricks of their trade can be learnt relatively quickly.

Hartbeats African Drum and Dance Justine Hart has been running African Drumming workshops since 1998 and is passionate about this wonderful art form and the dances and songs that accompany it. Over the last 12 years she has inspired and enabled thousands of children and adults to enjoy being part of an exciting and enriching African drumming experience.
"I was so pleased with the African Drumming Experience, and know the students (and staff) loved it. From the offset the dynamism and enthusiasm was infectious and, equally as important, they delivered the instructions to the students clearly and calmly. The dancing was another fantastic addition and meant that those that wanted to could get up on their feet and embrace the tribal experience!”
When Justine visits your school, she’ll bring her infectious enthusiasm to your pupils who will no doubt already be eager to get their hands on an African drum. Djembes and dundun drums are provided for everyone, giving young people the opportunity to learn how to play them and learn African rhythms. With the addition of songs and dances, a complete performance piece can be attained in just one session. Or with a course of workshops, children can develop their skills and delve deeper into the polyrhythmic wonders of African drumming to become an ensemble that will delight and amaze an audience at a school show or local event. Alternatively, if your aim is to give as many young people as possible the opportunity to have a go, you can request a day of short taster workshops. Justine’s extensive teaching experience and ability to break down rhythms will enable your pupils to play the drums and rhythms relatively quickly. Material and teaching style can be tailored to encourage every child to participate whatever their ability. Hartbeats has successfully provided workshops for all types of organisations, including schools for young people with behavioural problems or learning/physical disabilities. Justine is usually accompanied by an additional professional drummer. This provides exciting and dynamic demonstrations as well as forming a strong rhythmic base that the children can follow and enjoy drumming with. Justine is also Musical Director of a professional drum and dance ensemble who can provide fun and energising entertainment at your school events and inspire any budding drummers and dancers. If you are interested in exploring the cultural aspects linked to African drum and dance, Justine can give pupils/students information from her own first-hand experiences studying in West Africa. Justine is keen to promote and support African artists and regularly runs events, such as African Beats Camp, showcasing them to a wider audience and providing specialist education for students who want to develop it to a professional level.
16
As well as taking your pupils on an exciting musical and cultural journey, African Drumming has many other benefits such as exercising hand co-ordination, communication, listening skills, releasing tension, building confidence and breaking down culture, gender and age barriers. It’s an ideal team-building activity that motivates and directs creative energy to a common goal where each individual is of equal importance to create the group rhythm.

The Kent Sinfonia is the professional orchestra for the County of Kent, and as one of the foremost orchestras in the South East, it aims to take music to all. Central to this is its extended education programme devoted to the next generation of concert goers. Kent Sinfonia also works with top international soloists and offers a platform for outstanding young artists.
Performing Arts
Kent Sinfonia Orchestral Workshops
“…the Kent Sinfonia was faultless in its various renditions of familiar and well-loved pieces …a second superb performance with the Kent Sinfonia ...this was a night that will be remembered for a very long while.” Festival Proms, Tonbridge Castle (Kent & Sussex Courier)
The orchestra performs education outreach projects, including concerts and workshops. While providing the excitement of seeing and hearing a real orchestra in action, Kent Sinfonia musicians hope to encourage young children’s experience of live music, developing knowledge and appreciation of music as a part of learning. Kent Sinfonia’s music projects contribute positively to music education in general and the future of classical music in Kent and the South East. They are committed to extending outreach work with schools, and have devised a new concert programme, ‘Birds and Beasts!’, for 4-7 year olds (KS 1), following feedback from teachers highlighting the need for outreach activities for this age group (the programme is also suitable for KS 2 children). The ’Birds and Beasts!’ concert programme involves 28 players, a conductor and a presenter. The audience (including teddies and toy animals who are also invited!) is introduced to birds and animals depicted in music through instrumental sounds and descriptive orchestral ‘pictures’ (with several short excerpts), and to individual orchestral instruments. An appealing song, ‘Spring Chicken’, also involves all the children. The presenter interacts with the audience, inventing amusing storylines linking orchestral extracts together, which delight the children and maintain attention! The hour long performance is conveniently fitted into the school day. Kent Sinfonia is also working on further education programmes to continue their aim of taking live music to children. When possible, the orchestra’s wind quintet, the Kent Wind Soloists (see below), plan visits to schools beforehand to help create a link to a performance. Kent Sinfonia orchestral performances are suitable for several schools participating together in a larger venue. The Kent Wind Soloists, principal wind players from Kent Sinfonia (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn), run separate successful workshop days for primary schools, including 1) a lively demonstration session 2) a 'hands on' session in which children can try out wind and brass instruments (very popular - and noisy!) and 3) a short concert performance in smart concert dress. Kent Wind Soloists workshops are suitable for visits to individual schools.

ActOne ArtsBase Dance and Performance Training ActOne ArtsBase is a thriving company and charity providing inclusive dance and performance training for disabled and non disabled people. ActOne strive to create a community in which people of all abilities perform together and accept each other’s differences. We recognise that we are all different and that through performance we come together to share a common ground which does not allow for segregation.
“Its been lovely to find this kind of space for my son as he loves dance and drama and mainstream groups tend to overwhelm him.” “The interaction is subtle and not forced. The children are not expected to take part, they are gently guided. The staff are excellent.” “My son was encouraged in a gentle way and not pushed into anything.” “It was set at the right level for the children, and no one was left out. A very enjoyable session.”
Commitment to inclusion: Working with a team of professional performers who themselves have a variety of physical and learning abilities we confidently approach the delivery process by turning what may have previously been seen as a person’s disability or limitation into their unique area of performance specialism. We find ways to create the space that each person needs to develop their technique. ActOne put ability not disability centre stage! Education and Community Partnerships: ActOne wish to make inclusive and inspirational dance performance available to as many people as possible. The core aims of our Education and Community Partnerships work are; • To involve people in dance • To promote inclusion and positive image of integration with disability • To share ActOne’s model of inclusive practice with teachers and parents • To promote healthy lifestyles • To inspire confidence and self esteem • To give people access to new and contemporary dance performance

Alight Fingers provide circus workshops to schools. They call it ‘learning through play’ because it reflects the emphasis of the session and promotes a happy and positive attitude for approaching things. Learning to juggle and circus workshops are the perfect tool for teaching people to believe they can achieve the impossible. It's also great fun and suitable for all ages and abilities.
Performing Arts
Alight Fingers Circus Skills in Schools
“I love the look in people's eyes when they suddenly realise they can, and are juggling. They usually drop a fraction of a second afterwards because they're so shocked they're actually doing it. Half the trick is getting over the shock that you're capable of doing these things.”
Learning to do the impossible is of course, not easy, in fact it’s actually quite hard, but as people who defy gravity on a daily basis, Alight Fingers can pass on the easy ways to achieve it. They can teach juggling skills, plate spinning, diabalos, devil sticks, poi. contact juggling and chair balancing, balance beams, chinese ribbons, stilts, pedal-gos, unicycles, balancing feathers, and hula hoops. Also if you have any special requests they will try to accommodate you or find someone else who can. As a rough guide a workshop for 20 can be handled effectively by one instructor but if you have volunteers to assist that will reduce the number of leaders required. Also different styles of workshop are better suited to different group sizes, so Alight Fingers can discuss this to ensure you get the most from your play and learn session. Workshops are great fun and equally appealing to pupils who are normally difficult to engage or more suited to an alternative curriculum. Juggling has been shown in scientific studies to aid development of the brain. It's also been linked to improved academic skills, and it's fantastic for team building. In schools teachers have also linked it to improvements in behaviour, as well as improvements in concentration and reading. It also helps personal development in many other ways... • • • • • • • • • • •

“Thank you very much for coming and doing Punch & Judy for year 1. We all had a lovely morning, the children really enjoyed making their own Punch & Judy Theatres and have played with them a lot since. They enjoyed watching the show and found it very funny, your visit helped our Seaside Topic as the children found it very interesting and are still asking questions now.” Willen Primary School
Punch & Judy Workshops are always a great success at every school we attend, most rebook year after year. Children love making puppets and in our workshop they make and keep their very own Punch & Judy Show. They then hear about the 350 year history, and after a demonstration of the puppets, we finish off with a live Punch and Judy Show. Ideal for projects such as Victorian and Seaside themes etc. We can also provide this Workshop with Fairytale puppets such as Little Red Riding Hood and the 3 Little Pigs etc. Puppet Workshops – Educational fun for children of all ages featuring glove, string, rod and shadow puppetry. This incorporates a wide range of puppets from Ethnic Origins where children are encouraged to use their imagination and work as a team, building up their confidence and establishing better communication skills. Recycle Magic Show – With this show we encourage children in a fun environment all about how and why we must recycle more. The show features comedy, audience interaction, competitions, puppets and magic recycling machine. This can then be followed by a recycling workshop where children turn every day household items into sculptures they can keep. We can adapt this to fit around your timetable and if time is an issue you can just book the Recycle Magic Show on its own. Discos and Fun Shows – Games, competitions, disco, party dancing and comedy magic, ideal for end of term or fundraising events.

It’s Him Entertainment Educational Circus Skills It’s Him Entertainment is a small entertainment company specializing in juggling and other circus skills. The company is run by Nigel and Tracey who are both multi-skilled performers with many years’ experience of juggling, close-up magic, fire-eating and fire-breathing, stilt-walking, balloon modelling and other more esoteric ones like plate manipulation.
They provide circus skills workshops to many different groups and in several different formats and have taught in all types of schools, all over the country. As a qualified secondary teacher, Nigel has the experience of handling large groups of children, as well as the knowledge of how to use circus skills to teach a particular message. Circus skills workshops in schools are available in two basic formats: Workshops during the school day (often a single day with a number of different classes) or after-school sessions (generally spread over a 5-week period). During the sessions pupils are taught a wide variety of manipulation skills (e.g. juggling, diabolo, devil stick etc.) and balance skills (e.g. feather balance, stilts, tight-rope). Obviously the more time with a particular group of students, the wider and more indepth the skills taught. Many schools like the one-day format because they can include it as part of a theme. Some previous themes have included medieval, sport, art, or even workshops in French. Other schools prefer the after-school format as the students have more time to develop and are able to work towards both putting on a show and receiving certificate. Fees are dependent upon the location of the school but are generally about £250 for a whole day or £600 for an afterschool programme. Often the after-school sessions are funded by the students rather than the school and to facilitate this ‘It’s Him’ can provide an assembly a week or two before the course to encourage participation.

Research suggests that juggling improves hand-eye coordination leading to better reading skills, can increase brain size, can raise self-esteem in less motivated pupils and reduces stress. In addition, it can be used to teach better classroom skills (such as listening and concentrating), Physics (different forces, transfer of energy etc.), History (Nigel is the first official English Heritage Jester), Mathematics (there is a whole Open University program on the mathematics of juggling and also features Nigel), Drama (constructing a show, use of humour, use of props).

“It was great seeing the quieter students in the class coming out of themselves... The workshop gave students the opportunity to showcase their new skills to the rest of the class - something they felt really proud of. The students were excited to be taught by an expert.” Yo Lansdell, Director of Learning: Drama, Sandringham School
Professional Connection practitioners work for regional and London theatres, at drama schools, as well as educational institutions. This professional experience provides additional insight to young students during workshops. They supply drama and theatre workshops to schools, colleges, and universities across the UK. Workshops offered depend on the opportunities in the industry and are updated regularly on the company website. They currently include: An Introduction to Stage Combat – A qualified fight director or fight teacher introduces students to the principles of stage combat in an action packed workshop. Participants work towards creating a realistic fight within the context of a dramatic scene. This workshop can be focussed on either unarmed combat or swordplay. Practitioners carry specialised fight insurance. An Introduction to Fencing – Not a theatre workshop, but an introduction to sport fencing where participants learn about footwork, timing and bladework from a professional coach. The workshop is physical, and requires a large open space. This workshop is fun and energetic. Coaches are insured and qualified by The British Academy of Fencing. Character & Chorus in Antigone – Under the guidance of a professional theatre director, students investigate Sophocles' powerful text. Using ensemble and movement based rehearsal techniques with classical character analysis; participants gain an insight to the work of professional actors. This workshop is intellectually and physically challenging and provides the opportunity to ask questions about studying drama at a higher level, or becoming a professional actor/director. Simple Self Defence – Under the guidance of a fully trained and insured martial artist, participants learn simple, real world self defence techniques. We all hope never to be in a position where we need to protect ourselves, but this practical knowledge will give you confidence to handle a hostile situation. Techniques covered include defence against grabs, holds, punches, kicks, strangles, and knife attacks. Performing Magic – Students learn magic under the guidance of a top UK close up magician. They are taught about sleight of hand, misdirection, and performance. This is a rare opportunity to work alongside a professional with international performance experience.

Gary the Musical Clown Science Workshops and Shows Gary the Musical Clown is a STEM ambassador and can offer a variety of Science and Maths workshops and Shows for Primary aged children (KS1 & KS2) in Schools, Libraries, Museums and Science Centres all around the UK and abroad. A typical day involves a morning of workshops followed by a whole school performance in the afternoon.
“Gary is very well informed about the curriculum which ensures his workshops enhance it, and the quality of the workshops is testament to this.” Michelle Common, Primary Schools Officer, Mid Glamorgan Education Business Partnership
“Gary is conscientious, reliable and always delivers to a high standard. All the schools have really felt the workshops and shows have enhanced their pupils learning and many rebook Gary straight away.” Paul A Hartley, STEM Adviser, Devon Education Business Partnership
Light Fantastic – a great way to teach light. Pupils work around a carousel of hands on activities that help them understand light. They make small toys that show the make up of white light and play with things to show the importance of light and the tricks it can play. Older pupils explore solar cells and wire up gadgets powered by light. Good Vibrations – see how sounds are made and how they travel in a workshop where pupils use musical toys and whilst having fun forget they are in a science class. Gary performs a show ‘Good Vibrations’ with lots of audience participation explaining how sounds are produced by an object vibrating and how/why different objects produce different sounds. Simply Fizzical – Materials workshops for KS1 consists of games exploring the properties of different materials and the differences between solids, liquids and gas. KS2 students complete a project to demonstrate the reversible and irreversible effects of heat on different materials. The ‘Simply Fizzical’ show is a magic show with superb tricks highlighting the properties of different materials and a finale involving some cooking and a big ‘POP’. Forces – This is a great workshop for showing ‘FORCES’ making things move, or change shape by pushing and pulling etc. Assisted by Gary, the children can try plate spinning, diabolo, balancing on wheels etc. and so demonstrate friction, tension and gravity. In the accompanying show Gary brings to life his circus clown character providing tricks to music, with circus skills, magic and balloon modelling. Living Things – children investigate through play, the parts of the flower and their functions. Each child can make a flower to take home which turns into a design competition. The Show The Magic Garden is an interactive magic show which covers the link between all living things with a finale of a plant growing before your eyes.

Numeracy – Each session is linked to one number table and involves specially designed games and competitions for teams and individuals. Younger children look at shapes, clocks and adding with money. The numeracy show is an interactive game show covering a variety of topics - music counting, shapes, clocks, additions, subtractions, fractions etc.

The course has a choice of ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’ routes to meet any students’ abilities. Children will enjoy themselves on the course and learn the discipline of their ‘life line system’ enabling them to accept responsibility and adopt basic safety rules that don’t normally exist in other sports. A Jungle Parc activity day incorporates a range of tasks that will develop balance, agility and mental and physical abilities. Jungle Parc allows children to attain new levels of confidence, self reliance and team awareness while experiencing an activity that is exciting, demanding and importantly, great fun. Another advantage of Jungle Parc over many other sporting or physical activities is its universal attraction among pupils. There is something about the unique nature of climbing among the tree canopy that is exciting and particularly alluring to children, whether sporty or academic and because courses are graded and non competitive, children of all abilities can enjoy and excel. Even children who normally opt out of sport or are afraid of heights will surprise themselves and everyone else by becoming the most enthusiastic once on the activity course. With 10 years experience of building and managing sites across Europe they have an exemplary safety record. All courses are certified under CERES The European Company for safety checks on ‘self belay’ high wire adventure activities. Sara Holmes Willow Sculpture and Junk Art Sara Holmes is a freelance artist and much of her time is spent working with schools and community projects. She is also involved in creating sculptures with disadvantaged young people and aims to inspire through creativity, using sustainable materials, leading to a greener awareness of the world. She believes young people gain confidence, self belief, motivation and inspiration when they are free to create.
“Sara is marvellous. Everyone in the school was hugely impressed and interested. It was a very special week for us. Senior Management here have said that they are very keen to build on this experience by developing more sculpture work with Sara and the boys, to be displayed outside the school entrance.” Jenny, Art Co-ordinator, Forest School, Horsham
As a community artist with creative awareness at the core of her work Sara is at ease engaging with all age groups and abilities. Willow withies have been her main medium for some time and most of her students continue to surpass expectations and surprise her with their aptitude for untypical materials. With the London 2012 in mind Sara has created ‘Discus’. Partly inspired by the 1948 poster, this 2 metre tall sculpture of willow withies on a mild steel frame continues her experience with figurative shape and the emotions behind strength. Sara hopes to work with schools, focussing on para athletes, as their example offers a perfect platform to inspire through creativity and a rare opportunity for young people to engage with the concept of disability. She aims to guide students in the creation of a series of portraits which will offer a lasting legacy both physically, with the sculptures they produce, and mentally, with the pride of their association with their local hero. Whilst hopefully, through the process of sculpture a personal empathy for disability can be gleaned. Willow’s unique qualities make it ideal for creating a wide diversity of forms from figurative to abstract, decorative screens and sculptures, as well as functional living art like seating and shelters. Willow is a native species, and requires minimal processing without chemical additives, making it an environmentally friendly material which satisfies the requirements of Sustainable/Eco schools status and enhances your school’s ‘green credentials’. Growing sculpture gives the added dimensions of seasonal changes in colour and form; a demonstration of growth cycles, and a potential harvest for future projects. Living willow structures are naturally sinuous and curved, and provide a soft and organic form of landscaping. To be able to create a sculpture from a pile of sticks using little more than your hands, is an experience that children and adults alike, find deeply satisfying and therapeutic.

“Part of my goal is that schools and young people will be inspired by the heroes of London 2012 and since the Paralympics began here in 1948, I hope this programme will not only raise awareness but also offer schools and young people a lasting legacy of their connection with the games. All the workshops I run inspire me, they are a two way street, I learn as much as I teach.”

Briony Jenkins and the team at Pigeon first splashed paint in a classroom in 1999, and since then they’ve just got bolder and brighter. The team have a passion for helping schools with personalised art projects, and specialise in helping schools to devise the right project for their needs. Briony explains her passion here.
At Pigeon Art Workshops we love children’s art and all of the things they make. We never run a session where we don’t see something amazing being made by someone. We like their dribbles and blobs, their mistakes and upside down bits. We like the way they see the world and how they go about showing it.

Pigeon Art Workshops in Schools
We are a team of artists and teachers who work with children and with adults in schools and organisations. We like the buzz of heads together making something amazing – we like to walk away leaving behind something that wasn’t there when we arrived. We want everyone to get excited and do more when we are gone. If you want something for your school, large or small, take a look around the two websites and see if anything appeals. We try to ring the changes with every single project so yours will look different to what you see there but it will look just as good. We are experienced classroom managers, combining our own art practises with our teaching experience. We can offer mosaics, textiles and 3D; we can work in wood and metal, paint and everything in between. We work indoors and outdoors and make temporary and longer lasting work. We work all the way from the nursery through to school leavers and include Special Needs children and schools.

Zena Jay Ellis Collaborative Art Projects As an established community artist specialising in visual arts, Zena Jay Ellis works collaboratively with community organisations and schools to create exclusive artwork for their environment. Projects include murals, textiles and mosaics with an ethos of working as a team to achieve a shared goal that can be appreciated by all.
“The girls thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and their confidence has really grown. It is the most animated I have seen some of them!” Ruth Farman, Art Teacher, Hitchen Girls School
“Zena was like a breath of fresh air to our school, she was really able to bring our vision for the school to life. She not only inspired our children but staff too, allowing us to continue changing our school and children's lives for the better. Her work coincided with our culture week beautifully, showing that every child really does matter. We are truly grateful.” Ashleigh Ferdinand, Art and DT Co-ordinator and Year 6 Teacher, Ferrars Junior School
“Zena ran a carnival costume-making workshop for our summer scheme in 2009. The children who are referred to Keys to the Future are vulnerable, with a varying degree of needs. Zena created a fun and inclusive workshop that all children were able to participate in. They loved their carnival costumes and the opportunity to learn more about the Notting Hill and Luton Carnival. The resources she provided were innovative and different to art activities we had provided in the past, and as such the children were engaged and positive about the experience.” Gemma Crozier, Education Outreach Worker, Shelter’s Keys to the Future Newham Project
With a strong belief in the power of the arts as a means of education and self-expression Zena encourages active participation in the ideas, development and production stages, allowing pupils to take ownership of their overall work whilst learning new skills. She is fond of offering art as an alternative for disengaged pupils who find school academically challenging. Past projects have ranged from external walls of various school playgrounds to textile wall hangings and large-scale mosaics. Each project can be suited to the individual requirements of the school and pupils, with a strong focus on positive communication and interaction. Beyond the aesthetics of the artwork, Zena’s expertise can also be employed as a platform to address larger social issues within the area to engage pupils with ideas that allow them to explore the context of their social environment. Previous themes have focused around anti-crime campaigns, exploring the 5 senses and a celebration of local historical figures.
52
Pupils can participate from the age of 4, right up to 17 and projects can be made applicable to small groups or entire classes. A collaborative approach is needed for all projects and requires a consultation with the teacher on direction and purpose of the artwork. The tasks are a fantastic way to unite a class and produce a visually stimulating and unique work of art to be proud of.

Mosaic Art Ltd. Collaborative Art Mosaic Art Ltd is a collective of professional and experienced artists who work with schools to create sitespecific artwork, which is installed in the school grounds. Their projects are individually tailored and provide a practical and collaborative approach to the national curriculum requirements. They can be adapted to all levels and bring together different disciplines.
“Every day I see girls gathered around the mosaic and it has become a real focal point for the school. The mosaic is a great source of pride for the school and everyone involved. Tamara and Sylvia utterly fulfilled what we set out to do and really made the history of the school come alive in mosaic. Judith Woodings, Head of Art, Marymount School, Kingston upon Thames
Participants learn about the materials, the making process, and the basic skills. They then work together to make their own designs come alive in mosaic. The use of simple geometric building blocks has proved to be a valuable teaching tool, which helps to develop spatial awareness and manual dexterity. Children of all abilities and disabilities can excel and we have found that taking part is a rewarding experience for all involved. Groups develop a sense of unity as well as pride and ownership in the resulting artwork. With former project themes ranging from local life and exploring nature to the history of the school, Mosaic Art Ltd offer an inclusive and alternative way to engage children in learning. Projects start from one day to several full days of fun depending on the scale of the work. The large scale projects champion the benefits of teamwork and encourage appreciation and respect for all cultures while the impressive end product yields a sense of achievement for all.
54
To get the most from the project the company requires a brief consultation that determines where the piece will be situated (interior or exterior) how many children you wish to involve, the age group and the topics or themes to explore. This mutual understanding ensures that the project can be carried out inline with the design and time requirements of the school. The projects are suited to both primary and secondary school ages, and give children the chance to take part in the entire creative process from the initial idea through to the rewarding conclusion, with results that promise to stand the test of time.

Carl Merry is an experienced storyteller with a repertoire of tales from many cultures. A former teacher, he has performed at schools for over ten years, telling tales to pupils of all ages. Storytelling has held an important place in education for as long as man could talk. Long before the establishment of schools and formal teaching the storyteller held a revered place within the community.
“Carl’s stories were stimulating and the students responded really well, going on to use IT to produce picture books of their own versions of Carl’s stories. He was a big success with the students and we would welcome him back.”
Creative Arts and Literature
Carl Merry, Talespinner Storytelling, Workshops and Picture Books
Shirley Hicks/Carey Cooke, Deben High School, Felixstowe
Storytelling is for everyone. We all live in the story of our own lives and relish the stories we are told by others. The old storytellers knew this and shaped their tales to fit the needs of their communities. Everyone learned from the wisdom contained in stories. Listeners young and old came together in an understanding of what it was to be part of a larger world and to appreciate many aspects of the human condition. Stories were told to entertain, educate, provide moral examples, develop imagination and transport listeners to “another place” so that they might better understand their own environment. It is on this tradition that Carl bases his school visits. Much of our sense of belonging and identity has been lost with the march of “progress.” By bringing the old tales to young listeners Carl hopes to bring back some of the magic of these ancient storytellers. While he entertains school audiences he also uses the stories to show the children how others have perceived the world in which they live. By combining stories and mixing the funny with the thought provoking, the sad with the uplifting, Carl takes his audience on a journey they will remember and reflect upon. Carl is available for single day or multiple visits as part of an ongoing project. He can work with pupils to create picture books based on traditional or original stories and can contribute to literacy days, arts and book weeks. When Carl visits a school he plans his tales carefully to fit the ages and requirements of your school’s curriculum. He is always willing to discuss the programme of stories and develop a set of stories around a chosen theme. His years as a teacher of English in secondary schools mean that he is aware of the need to plan each school’s programme individually and the importance of using the correct material to ensure a successful outcome.

Education involves getting out of the classroom to discover information on a practical level. Legislation and rising costs mean that practical external activities for children are becoming harder to obtain. Impeyan hope to compensate for this by providing valuable and practical experiential learning within the school environment. A mixture of different Impeyan animals can encompass themes such as camouflage, habitat, biodiversity, food chains, texture (very good for visually impaired/special needs students) and many other topics included in all key stages of the National Curriculum. They also cover National Curriculum subjects like: living things in the environment, food chains and feed webs, feeding relationships and hunting techniques. Some of the rarest owls from around the world including a Milky Eagle Owl, Great Grey Owl, Spectacled Owl, American Barn Owl are available to see at the centre or visit you at school. Living Eggs Education Through Life
“Children developed understanding of life cycles and it supported the writing of stories instructions and posters, all of which stemmed from having the chicks in school.” Weeton Primary School, Weeton, Preston
Living Eggs Ready Hatch is a two week comprehensive programme providing all you need to successfully hatch chickens in your classroom. Embryo eggs are provided, 2-3 days from hatching so there is no need to wait 3 weeks. The eggs are candled prior to delivery to ensure the highest possible success rate. The Living Eggs incubators are specially designed for classroom hatching. An electronic thermostat ensures accurate temperature control for a high hatch rate. The large viewing windows allow the children to see all stages of hatching. A brooder box complete with heat, light, bedding, feed and a water dispenser is supplied which allows teachers and children to care for the chicks and enjoy easy observation and access to the chicks. A comprehensive instruction manual is supplied with the kit detailing all aspects of the programme. Superb Teachers Resources are supplied on a CD with the kit, and are available 4 weeks before the experience via the internet to enable teachers to plan their lessons using the vast materials on offer linked to all areas of the National Curriculum. Colourful posters are supplied depicting Life Cycles or Embryo Development depending on your pupils’ ages. Living Eggs staff will deliver, set up for you and explain how equipment operates and will answer any queries you may have. A helpline phone number is available 7 days a week to assist you with any queries or concerns you may have. Once the programme is completed you are welcome to either keep the chicks or return them to Living Eggs for re-homing. Should you decide to keep the chicks, information is included on how to raise them.

Low Carbon Trust Eco Education Days at Earthship Brighton Low Carbon Trust offers many environmental educational experiences including training courses, workshops, events, and tours. They also offer Eco Education Days for schools covering a range of hands-on activities and workshops. Visits can be tailored to suit school requirements and can include creative activities using recycled materials, green wood-working, organic gardening or tailored activities relating to sustainability issues and the award-winning Earthship Brighton project. “Our visits have been eye openers and developed awareness for youngsters who wouldn't normally consider ecology or environment as important issues in their lives.” Charly Greensted, Oakmeed Community College “What a fabulous trip we had today! It was perfect, the kids loved it and your team were brilliant with really great information and fantastic activities!” Kirsten Monks, Balfour Junior School
Earthship Brighton provides an ideal environment to teach children and young people about sustainable living. The building's solar panels, wind turbine, rainwater harvesting and the use of waste materials in its construction make it a fascinating and inspiring place in which to learn. The centre can accommodate a maximum of 120 pupils per day. Accompanying adults are also encouraged to participate in the activities. We can tailor sessions to cover curriculum subjects, including science, geography and citizenship. There are also links with the international 'Eco Schools award programme' and Teacher Net, in particular on the topics of Energy, Water, Waste, Growing, Biodiversity and Healthy Living. All activities are risk-assessed and designed to engage visitors to learn through discussion and hands-on participation. The experience provides an opportunity for pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of environmental issues and nature in a fun and enjoyable way. When the group arrives in Stanmer Park, activities begin with a short walk through the countryside to Stanmer Organics and Earthship Brighton (direct access by car is possible for any special mobility needs). Pupils are split into groups of 15 to 30 students, which rotate around four activities in the Earthship and surrounding areas.

Key information
Activities can be tweaked to suit smaller groups. A leader from the Low Carbon Trust runs each activity with the help of the group’s own adult helpers. They participate in two activities (with a tiny break in between), before stopping for a picnic lunch in the meadow (there is indoor shelter in case of bad weather).

Transport: We encourage all visitors to use the 'Big Lemon' bus company, which runs it’s fleet on recycled cooking oil. As well as being a greener means of transport, it is a fun and educational way to begin and finish the day. The Big Lemon offers a discount to schools visiting the Earthship.

For thousands of years donkeys have been the 'helping hooves' of humankind - they are the original beasts of burden. In many countries of the world, and in many situations, they are used as the preferred mode of transport. Donkeys are much more of an all terrain animal than horses and are in fact highly intelligent, despite popular misconception.
“Mike's Donkeys attended our Charity Fun Day. We all had a great day, and now I've made my climb of Mount Kilimanjaro we are proud to say we have reached the target of £3500 for Clic Sargent. It's been a fantastic year and thank you for coming to our event.” Pete Matthews

Mike’s Donkeys Donkeys in Education
Donkeys can also be very useful to entertain and educate children. Mike’s Donkeys will come to your school or venue and teach your pupils how to groom, tack-up, care for and look after donkeys. Children can also learn many fascinating facts about donkeys and of course they can also enjoy a donkey ride. Mike’s Donkeys regularly attend Schools and Colleges; Youth Centres, Summer Camps, Education Days, Nurseries, Residential and Care Homes or any establishment wishing to learn about donkeys. The visits are suitable for any age groups although only those under 16 and less than eight stone in weight can ride the animals. Visits are also suited to able-bodied or disabled people and those with learning difficulties The donkeys love these visits because of all the attention they receive. They are very intelligent, calm and gentle creatures and can provide a powerful therapeutic experience for the people they visit. The donkeys are supervised at all times by the experienced staff and protective headgear is provided, if required, for the children who are riding. The donkeys are very happy and experienced travellers and distance is no object to them attending your school Before hiring donkeys to attend your school event and in order to protect yourself and those participating in your event, it is advisable to check with the operator's local council to ensure they have a valid licence to work donkeys. Request to see their insurance certificate although this will be invalid without a licence. Also ask for a copy of their Enhanced Criminal Record Certificate to make sure they can work with children or vulnerable adults. It is also a good idea to contact the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary to make sure the operator has their donkeys inspected for welfare reasons throughout the whole of the year.

Green Up Your Act Education teaches sustainability through workshops which use a balance of discussion, practical activities and out of class learning. They make children aware of their carbon footprint through the subjects of food, waste, recycling, energy production and pollution. By doing this they can see the importance of their impact on their own community and hopefully learn to protect their environment.
“Every class enjoyed the inspiring hands on activity of making pots and planting them with food seedlings. The activity had many links to our science and creative curriculum and our Eco week themes. This was the highlight of our school Eco Week because it linked every aspect of our educational focus on food, transport, reduce, reuse, recycle, simplicity, co-operation. There was no preparation required on the part of the teachers and we were amazed at what could come out of two handmade baskets carried on the bus - enough to provide every child with their own pot making material, the compost and a variety of food seedlings to go in it. This was a workshop of huge educational value and one which every child learned a practical skill of immense value, as well as getting to take their seedling home to grow and eat. We are looking forward to more input another time.” Liz Williamson St Mary Magdalen School

Green Up Your Act Education Sustainability Workshops
Many areas of the curriculum are covered, particularly science, geography and citizenship. Green Shoots – The energy consumed during food production accounts for over a third of the energy we consume in the UK. We import half of our fruit and vegetables. Learning about food miles, seasonal food and nutrition is essential to an understanding of our carbon footprint and promoting health and well being. Making paper pots from newspaper introduces the idea of growing from seed or bulb, which in itself is an effective way of learning about our food carbon foot print, recycling and the durability of materials we throw out. “Fantastic! The kids really enjoyed having a new face to teach them about the importance of sharing the earth’s resources. The students particularly enjoyed the practical aspect of the lesson, using tetra packs to make something they could take home.” Anna Frendo, Teacher of Geography, Sustainability Co-ordinator
Tetra Pack Wallet Workshop – Reducing waste is one of the best ways to improve our environment. Landfill sites are filling up and incineration is not the answer. Reusing redundant materials is a clear statement about closing the loop of resources, but it is a challenge to create new and meaningful uses for objects we regard as rubbish. The Tetra-Pack to wallet design is a transformation creating new and exciting uses for material otherwise regarded as waste. In this case the cardboard, aluminium creates a new object which cleverly borrows from the properties of the discarded carton. i.e.: durable and hard wearing. All materials provided.

Cuddle-Me-Do Mobile Farm Farm Animals for School Cuddle-me-do Mobile Farm is an educational service committed to empowering children through a hands-on experience. They work closely with nurseries and primary schools supporting and bringing to life many aspects of the National Curriculum. Sessions are tailored to Key Stages and can be used to introduce new topics or consolidate work already started. They can be structured to incorporate different activities, and children will be able to become involved at their own pace, from observing and stroking to bottle feeding and milking. “The children gained so much from seeing and interacting with the animals, their pleasure was a joy to see. I have heard nothing but praise from the parents today. I intend to recommend your business to other schools as it was the best visitor session I have experienced as a teacher.” Lyn Murray, Lewes Old Grammar School
A mobile farm visit can include a miniature pony, calf, goats, lambs, piglets, chicks, ducklings, hens and rooster, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, a tortoise, an owl and a hedgehog. All the animals used for the visits are selected for their temperament and their welfare is always our paramount concern. During a visit the emphasis is on bringing child & animal together using a hands on approach, building confidence and awareness in an enjoyable, educational and safe environment. The mobile farm service means there is no more organising coaches and the additional incurred costs or wasted travelling time. The farm can be set up on grass or an area of tarmac or on tarpaulins indoors. Gazebos are supplied to protect both children and animals from the rain or sun. The children will be invited out either in groups or classes to participate in a variety of activities. Subject areas covered can range from science, phse/citizenship, art and design and design technology. The structure and content of a visit will be pitched at the appropriate level of the relevant age group and the emphasis will be on hands on contact and developing respect and awareness for each individual animal.

Thames Barrier Information and Learning Centre The Thames Barrier Information and Learning Centre runs educational packages for school groups based around environmental and engineering themes. The activities follow the National Curriculum for Key Stages 2 and 3 for a range of subjects including science and geography. The Centre is based in the southeast of London next to the River Thames and the Thames Barrier.
“Very good informative day, excellent value.” Donhead School
“It was fantastic, covered all we required.” Shenfield St Marys School
The Learning Centre packages range from river walks and pond dipping, to role-play games such as the ‘River of life’. Activities are designed to get children thinking about their environment and the environmental challenges we face, as well as encouraging an interest in science and geography. The Centre offers a number of different half-day packages to suit most learning needs. You can choose to combine any two half-day activities to make it a full day. Sessions led by the Learning Centre staff include the ‘River of life’. This floor mat game encourages children to think about the role rivers play in the development of society and the impact humans have had on the river and surrounding areas through history. The ‘Flood game’ looks at what can be done to prepare in case of a flood. Pupils decide in groups what they should take with them if they are evacuated from a house. The focus is on teamwork and the themes covered include the floodplain of the River Thames and how London and the South East are protected from flooding. The Centre also has a wildlife garden. It’s a safe space for school children to learn more about their natural environment and how to preserve it. They can look at how plants grow and develop, search for mini beasts, think about sustainability or go pond dipping. The Information Centre is a small exhibition about the River Thames, the history of flooding in London and how the Thames Barrier was designed and built and how it works. It’s open to the public but also ideal for visiting schools who are looking for a shorter visit or lower priced option. You can choose a self-led package to the Information Centre, such as the Design and technology package. This introduces children to civil engineering using the design and construction of the Thames Barrier as a case study. Or you can choose a Group Talk led by one of our Information Assistants. Contact the Thames Barrier Team to find out more about all the activities available and to discuss the best packages for your class.

Jonathan's Jungle Roadshow specialises in providing professional animal encounter sessions that are educational, interactive and lots of fun for all involved. Jonathan, a former school teacher and lifelong naturalist, maintains a large and varied private collection of truly amazing invertebrates and reptiles and travels across central and southern England to provide his unique service to as wide an audience as possible.
“The best teaching session I have seen a visitor provide in my 20+ years in education. Jonathan's manner with the children, the level and content of the information given and the way in which he involved everybody in the room whilst respecting the concerns of a few of our children was exemplary. The use of a video camera to display animals like the tarantula on our interactive whiteboards was incredible.” Primary School Headteacher
Jonathan is able to provide age-appropriate presentations for any group from Pre-school through to College & beyond and provides children & adults with the opportunity to gain handson, personal experience of some absolutely wonderful animals as part of a truly memorable educational experience. Some sessions allow Jonathan’s amazing animals to be experienced really close up! By using his video camera's supermacro function and a suitably connected big screen (interactive whiteboard/large panel TV) it is possible to highlight tiny details on the animals which would normally remain unseen.
Whilst many of the workshops are tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Science curriculum for particular year groups, each topic can be adapted for children of any age, including Foundation Stage 2 and pre-school children. Just a few examples of available workshop topics include: • Minibeasts/Rainforests/Animal senses • Life cycles/Habitats & adaptation • Moving, growing & changing/Reproduction • Variation & classification/Wildlife conservation Finally, sessions can be ‘just for fun’ and not have a focus on any particular topic, but simply be an opportunity for the children (and adults) to meet these amazing animals up close and personally!

Model Rocket Workshops Ready to launch? Building, launching and recovering your own model rocket is guaranteed to spark an enthusiasm for science and maths that will last well beyond the workshop activity. Model Rocket Shop’s half or full day workshops deliver an exciting mix of physics, chemistry, maths, space history and design and technology that is FUN for all ages and abilities.
“Always helpful with lots of good advice. Quick to respond to our enquiries and orders. We've had lots of serious fun with model rockets.” Rupert Greeves, Teacher, Exmouth Community College
“We’ve had a total of seven rocket workshops that really got our kids revved up about science. Paul Lavin’s presentation and technical skills make his sessions our most popular activity.” Tom Ward, Director, www.technologycamp.co.uk, former Head of Science, Elstree School
Everything needed for your class, year group or entire school to safely build, launch and recover model rockets is provided. One rocket per pupil is the ideal ratio for full ownership of the experience and a lasting reminder that “Science is Fun”. Team building strategies can be incorporated and as much “hard” science as desired can also be included.
Scalable Workshops are not “one size fits all”. They can be tailored to most time, space, budget, age and ability constraints and can focus on individual curricular elements or enrichment subjects. After school clubs, fund raising events, summer activity days, and Science Week sessions are favourites. The workshops are scalable, from small clubs to world record mass launches of over 1000 rockets.
Never mind the weather There’s no need to wait for summer – there’s a workshop to suit even when the weather is inclement or where space is limited. Computer design exercises or rocket racer cars “fly” in any weather. If you have a group that is interested in rocketry competitions, Model Rocket Shop has participated at World Championship level, and coached national winning teams and individuals.

Science Dome Mobile Science Discovery Centre Science Dome explores science, geology and geography in an interactive way using the latest full dome 360 degree projection equipment. Science Dome visits schools providing an additional science resource and presenting a different learning experience to children. They provide fully digital mobile planetarium and natural history shows, utilising a purpose-built mobile dome situated in your school hall, or the UK’s first dome designed for exterior use. “The presentation was adapted well for the needs of the school. The experience was thoroughly enjoyed by both children and adults! There was a buzz in school for days afterwards.” “We were delighted with the presentation. It supported the children’s learning and even from an adult point of view was amazing. Thank you.” Teacher Feedback
A full day visit can include up to five class shows and there are a number of engaging and informative programmes to choose from, suitable for every year group including: 1. Solar System Tour and Beyond 2. Space Exploration (Apollo Moon Landings) 3. Dinosaur Show 4. Rocks, Soils and Fossils 5. Earth and Beyond KS1/2 6. Light/Dark and Space 7. Light and Sound 8. Ancient Egypt and the Stars 9. Ancient Greece and the Stars The innovative Dinosaur Show for example includes dinosaur pictures in 3D using 3D glasses (provided) and also real dinosaur fossils to handle and examine. The giant 180 degree projector is used to walk through a dinosaur landscape. The show starts with time travel back to the Jurassic times and pictures of early Earth landscapes. It then gives an interactive introduction to dinosaurs and talks about the fossils in the local Jurassic coast. The show ends with possible explanations for dinosaur extinction such as a large meteorite. We then look at the stars using the planetarium and observe many shooting stars and the night sky. Shows are typically 45 minutes in length but can be longer for older pupils. The Rocks and Fossils programme is one hour and includes samples to hold. Infant Schools are recommended to have 30-35 minutes for Reception and Y1. Please ensure you plan your schools event early with us, as we can take booking 6 to 8 months in advance. Certain dates during a term can be very busy. Content is constantly being developed, and covers many subjects. New additions to the Science Dome programme are four full-surround films using a new 360-degree projection system from the USA. These films wrap around and over the viewer on the whole surface of the dome, and are the type of films presented in fixed planetariums in science centres, but we will bring them to your school!

The Cool House of Learning STEM Workshops and Shows The Cool House of Learning offers a whole host of shows and science and mathematics based workshops, ‘with the fun bits left in’. Lively sessions packed with activities, games, puzzles, brainteasers and tricks for pupil and staff training with a quirky twist. For a magical approach to learning the wonders of Science and Maths across Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, The Cool House of Learning delivers a concoction of explosive shows.
“Thank you very much for a very enjoyable, engaging session. Yours was the first session of the day and after we got back to school I did a ‘What was your favourite session and why?’ talk with the children. 29/31 chose yours! We then spent 20 minutes making the ‘flying fish’ amongst other things, which you showed us. It was fantastic. Your energy and enthusiastic approach certainly won the children (and the staff) over!” Rita Pountney, Visiting Primary School Teacher, Old Church Primary School, Darlaston
With tricks and illusions guaranteed to amaze and amuse whether it’s levitating balls, vanishing pencils or screaming straws the Cool Magic Science show allows students to discover the scientific fun to be had using a mix of seemingly mundane objects. Similarly, The Cool Materials Show investigates materials and their properties (in line with the National Curriculum) and present experiments where children will see quicksand corn flour and exploding custard while the fact packed The Light and Colour Workshop tackles the topic of light and colour including bending and bouncing light, and producing a rainbow (you can stand in). Wacky Workshops – As a more interactive way of educating, the workshops are a popular choice with teachers who wish to include a more hands-on approach to science, encouraging pupils to dive head first in to experiments and investigations. They are adapted from the categories above and include handling gloopy liquid, making ‘Flubber’ balls, flying fish, screaming straws and levitating balls meaning a truly engaging feast for the senses. As a unique twist, parents are invited to witness the fun too, opening their eyes to a world of Science that awaits them in their very own homes! The Cool House of Maths – The Cool MatheMagical show puts to bed the idea of maths being all about boring sums and mind-numbing equations. In its place are animated demonstrations, tricks and teasers which astonish the audience and give the brain a real workout. As with the Science Shows, the MatheMagical Workshops provide the perfect proactive follow up to the shows and develop pupils problem solving and reasoning skills with hardly a number insight!

Architecture Workshops Making Learning Fun The Architecture Workshops Association are a small not-for-profit educational organisation, working throughout the UK in Schools, Colleges and Universities. Their Reception to Sixth form Architecture Workshops have been making learning fun since 1996. Designed for all Key Stages, these unique handson experiences of integrated curricular activities bring together the six strands of the national curriculum's Pupil Learning & Thinking Skills Framework. “We were impressed at how the pupils were given an opportunity to apply various skills in the workshop and were delighted at how much fun they were clearly having. The staff were highly impressed with the quality of the experience and the way the session was run. They have already requested a return visit and we will certainly recommend you to other schools.” Lindsay Fry, Deputy Headteacher, Corsham Primary Sch. Wiltshire
The workshops engage pupils in 3d visual problem solving, both individually and as a team, using a mix of higher order and creative thinking strategies. Workshops are adapted to suit pupils abilities, enabling G&T students and SEN students to have the same workshops experience. Increasingly used for extension/ enrichment, PSHCE and citizenship activities for KS3, 4 & 5. The workshops engage students in fun activity whilst helping them develop as Creative Thinkers, Effective Participants, Independent Enquirers, Self Managers and Team Workers, through a combination of individual and group work, design problem solving and creativity. Underlying the requirements for communication, cooperative skills, logistical reasoning, critical evaluation and self reflection. The Workshops are split into two categories: ‘Build-It’: Focused Practical Tasks, using design technology, maths, literacy, science, history and drama to differing degrees pupils create large scale reconstructions of famous architectural landmarks, i.e: Egyptian Pyramids; Greco-Roman Temple; Tudor Globe Theatre; Victorian Crystal Palace. ‘Kre8’ workshops stimulate pupil’s imagination, interpretative and visual problem solving skills helping to develop higher order thinking strategies. Focusing on investigation, Disassembly and Evaluation as Design and Make assignments. Working in teams, pupils use DT skills, Maths and Science to design and build large scale structures i.e: Bridges; Shelters; Olympic Sculptures; Skyscrapers. Kre8 workshops at KS 3 &4 are often run as year group or inter-school competitions by our regular clients. Key Stage 1 (inc. reception) – Using number, counting, shape and space pupils work together to build simple modular forms, which go on to form the basic parts of most KS2 workshops. Secondary design course – Developed to help spatial awareness and visualisation skills of older students considering further study in architecture and design. . The spatial interventions of 3D art and architecture are explored through precedent study with the students developing their ideas further as abstract art and architecture; introducing site and locality. Students consider environmental impact of their designs in relation to existing urban developments and green field sites.

Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience What was it like during World War II? How did it feel to be a British Citizen? What did people eat and wear? Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Museum answers these questions and more. It recreates the London Blitz with special effects highlighting the sights, the sounds, the artefacts, and even the dust, smoke and smell of an air raid at its height.
“Spot on for National curriculum for all age groups – quite amazing!” Dr. Anthony Freeman, Government, History Advisor
“I thought I was back in the war, it was unbelievable. All children should visit this nostalgic and moving experience to see what it was really like for the ordinary people during World War 2.” Dame Vera Lynn
The museum has an astonishing collection of evocative photographs and an enormous number of actual relics. Everything from toilet rolls and soap to an Anderson shelter, you can sit in and hear air raids overhead. There are shops displaying what was available for purchase during the war years and a feature devoted to Winston Churchill. The education packs available for primary schools include activity sheets intended to support National History Curriculum Key Stage 2 Core Study Unit 4 - Britain Since 1930. The particular emphasis is on the experience and impact of the Second World War in Britain and covers topics including: Sheltering in the Underground, Gas Masks, Anderson Shelters Rationing, Fighting Fires, Evacuation, and The Blackout. For secondary schools activity sheets are linked with the main themes of ‘Britain at War Experience’ and form part of the study programme for the History National Curriculum key stage 3, Core Study unit 5 - The era of the Second World War with particular emphasis on the experience and impact of war, and the home front in Britain. There are four titles: ‘Air Raid precautions’ ‘Andersons and the Underground’ ‘Women in Wartime’ and ‘The Blitz’. Each unit includes an introduction to the area of study and acts as a stimulus to further enquiry. The suggested activities are of varying levels of difficulty and may be used for individual work or group discussion. They invite pupils to develop their understanding of the Second World War, to think about the experiences that are recreated in the Supplement and to explore their own attitudes and reactions.

The museum allows pupils to use a range of historical Artefacts, Documents, Posters, Printed Resources, Pictures and photographs, Film Music and Sound Recordings. Tasks have been designed with National Curriculum Attainment Targets in mind, but are not connected to specific targets or levels, as these will vary according to the age and ability of each group.

The Bank of England Museum’s education programme is designed to support aspects of teaching in several curriculum areas for key stages 2 and above. It includes highly interactive cinema presentations, offering students the chance to ask questions and keeping them engaged and interested throughout. The presentations aim to improve pupils’ awareness of money and give them a better appreciation of their own spending and saving decisions. Presentations for younger children cover the history, function and value of money and concepts such as banking, changing prices and interest rates. Presentations for older students help them understand how everyone’s earning, spending, saving and work fit together to form the economy and how our individual activities help to shape the way the economy functions.
Heritage and Cultures
The Bank of England Museum Educational Programme
For secondary school students studying economics and business studies, the Museum offers a presentation on the role and functions of the Bank of England as the central bank of the United Kingdom. It consists of a twenty-minute film followed by a question and answer session in which the topics covered in the film can be explored in greater detail. The question and answer session can be tailored to meet the requirements of the group. Presentations are available to groups of between 15 and 50 students and are free of charge but their popularity means that they must be booked in advance (Telephone 020 7601 3833/3866/ 3951, or email education@bankofengland.co.uk). After the presentations, students can enjoy a fascinating visit to the Museum which includes audio-visuals and interactive displays. One of the most popular exhibits allows visitors to take control of a mock-up of a hot air balloon to learn about setting interest rates. Other displays that never fail to amaze pupils of all ages are the one million pound note and the genuine gold bar that can be handled and lifted, although its 13 kg of weight will catch a few people by surprise. Activity sheets are available for all age groups. The Bank of England also offers two free resources for schools which are based on the materials used in the Museum’s presentations. For 9−11 year-olds, Pounds & Pence covers the history, function and value of money and concepts such as banking, changing prices and interest rates. The aim is to improve pupils’ awareness of money and prices in every day life and give them a better appreciation of their own spending and saving decisions. For 14–16 year-olds, Made of Money describes what the economy is, how it works, how it stays on track, and its everyday relevance to teenagers. Both resources comprise printed information and activity cards, a DVD / video and teachers’ notes. They cover the topics in an engaging and accessible style using examples and illustrations from daily life so that young people can easily relate the ideas to their own experiences. The Lincolnsfields Children's Centre is a registered children's charity providing opportunities for children of all abilities. “I really enjoyed the experience and it was like going back in time.” Anna-Maria, Age 9, St Mary's School “Thought it was awesome to hear what an air raid siren actually sounded like!” Bradley, Age 11, Robertswood School “I had the most fantastic time ever!” Lucy, Chilton Primary School
The Centre is located at Bushey Hall heritage site and utilises its twelve original WW2 buildings to stage historical events within the grounds. A WW2 school visit takes your group to live in 1939 England, providing a safe, exciting, fun, experience, enabling pupils to live an Evacuee's life. This 3 day residential visit is totally unique and includes simple pre-visit classroom activities with children making I.D. labels and Gas Mask boxes. After being evacuated from school and arriving by your transport at the centre, pupils enjoy a hands–on learning experience where they can learn about using ration cards, predecimal coinage and weights. They visit a ‘bombed out’ London street; tour the unique reconstructed 1940's house; handle and use artefacts and clothing from the war; take part in drill sessions; respond to an air raid alert and much more. On day 2 all meals are based on authentic WW2 food, with a menu consisting of war ration recipes. During the day pupils will follow a typical evacuees day, helping as Land Army volunteers on the farm and in the ‘Dig for Victory’ garden; helping with cooking the meals, trying out some make do – and mend activities and helping with wash day in the 1940's kitchen. In the evening they enjoy playing traditional board and table games with the wireless as background entertainment and take part in a traditional Beetle Drive or Housey Housey session. The rationing ends that night with a visit from some American G.I. re-enactors giving out sweets and gum. On their final day there is a V.E. day Victory Lunch before they leave to return to modern day England. This unique residential experience brings the period vividly to life and throughout the programme, comparisons are drawn between modern day and WW2 experiences, linking recycling with ‘Make do and Mend’ and conservation with rationing and ‘Dig for Victory’. Non residential day visits, are available which also enhance pupils understanding of this unique period in a way that films, class work or coursework can’t.

Holocaust Survivor Stories London Jewish Cultural Centre Eye witness testimony from Holocaust survivors is the most powerful tool in raising awareness of the dangers of prejudice and racism. London Jewish Cultural Centre’s survivor speakers’ programme enables thousands of school children each year to hear and learn from these compelling stories of human endurance and man’s capacity to ill-treat his fellow man.
“Students were unanimous in the verdict that this was the most important historical experience they had ever had.” Vandean School, Kent “Without the visit the Holocaust would just seem like another history topic. It gave a reality to the subject which it is impossible to convey through textbooks.” La Sainte Union School, London
“Your story touched me in so many ways that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Arnita Manandhar, Year 11, Preston Manor High School
In 1994 Holocaust studies became a compulsory part of the school curriculum. This led the Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department of the London Jewish Cultural Centre to formalise its visiting speaker programme, formerly run on an ad hoc basis. Over the past 17 years the programme has gone from strength to strength, reaching out to schools throughout the country. In 2008/9 alone, Holocaust survivors gave direct testimony to over 15,000 students. Some 60 Holocaust survivors, not all of whom are Jewish, act as school speakers for us. They have endured a range of Holocaust experiences – kindertransport, the ghettos, hidden children, false passports, slave labour, camps. All speakers are people with direct experience of the Holocaust. They have been helped in the presentation of their story and in dealing with questions from both pupils and teachers. The LJCC Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department makes all the arrangements. Supported by a marvellous team of volunteer drivers, the department liaises with the schools, and requests feedback from students and teachers. Speakers give their time voluntarily, but all their travel expenses are met. Some are able to talk more frequently than others; how often they talk, and where, is entirely at each individual’s discretion.
92
Mindful of the survivors increasing age and frailty, an LJCC Legacy initiative has been launched to enable future generations to keep these testimonies alive, using recorded survivor tapes, personal reminiscences, photos, maps and other memorabilia. Meanwhile, if you have not heard a survivor speak, try to do so. The impact of direct testimony cannot be overestimated.

Hablemos Spanish Language and Cultural Workshops Hablemos was established in 2004 by Joanna Sessions and Francisco Valles Gomez. Fancisco and Joanna are teachers having previously worked in Mexico and Spain. Maria de Silva joined Hablemos in 2007. The team have a passion for everything Spanish and provide a range of language and culture workshops for all age groups.
“Their workshops are popular and have enthused a huge number of our students over the years. Jo and Fran's professionalism and commitment have greatly raised the profile of languages and specifically Spanish amongst our pupils. The enormous paella that has been cooked on our front lawn has become legendary! We have also been very keen to invite Hablemos into school for focus days with great success!” Matthew Morley, Assistant Headteacher, Clarendon House Grammar School
Spanish Language Workshops – Years 9 to Sixth Form – These bespoke workshops give pupils the opportunity to engage in authentic tasks over an extended time period, leading to a completed project. Workshops develop and encourage a natural use of language and promote fluency skills, by setting a number of practical activities requiring pupils to work in small groups, taking part in oral communication. Spanish Language Workshops – Years 3 to 6 – Growing in popularity with state and independent schools due to an increasing emphasis on primary MFL. The tasks and activities take a non-academic approach to language learning, with emphasis on activities, including games, music, theatre and crafts. Workshops focus on the rich and diverse practices of Spain and Latin America, including salsa dance, making piñatas and trying cold tapas. Cultural Workshops – Cross-curriculum – Spanish and Latin American cookery classes: Hablemos have a passion for all things Spanish, including the food and they are keen to share their enthusiasm and expertise. These cookery workshops emphasise the culture and background of the food. With chef Francisco’s vast knowledge of Spanish, Mexican and South American cultures, pupils will learn traditional and authentic recipes ranging from familiar paella, tapas, and tortillas to chicken cooked in a spicy chocolate sauce! Dance and Music – music workshops cover varied themes including how Spanish language influences popular music or how Arabic and African music has influenced traditional music in Spain and Latin America. Pupils are shown the wonderful diversity of music from across the Spanish-speaking world, focussing on contemporary and traditional themes. Workshops are practical and involve pupils producing a mini-project at the end of the session. Dance workshops can be combined with music workshops or provided separately with themes including salsa, merengue, cha cha cha, ragaton and flamenco.
94
Spanish and Latin American film – These workshops are suitable for sixth formers studying either Spanish, Art or film studies and approach film discussion by encouraging pupils to interact and get involved with the films and characters. Themes date from “filming during the Franco years” to the more contemporary films currently being produced in Spain and Latin America.

His vital signs are monitored and during the workshop, he is given a range of drugs and is stabbed (electronically). The effects of these are clearly demonstrated as Stan is pushed towards death. Only your students can save him by making the right decisions in the workshop! It is hoped the experience will help young people have the courage and knowledge to make the right decisions if faced with a situation involving drugs or knives. The Careers in Health workshop brings the health sector to your classroom, so students (and teachers!) are able to try their hand at some of the skills used in this sector and assess the many career paths available. Activities include how to take a set of medical observations, how to take blood from an injection simulator and how to move a patient using a hoist. Health & Fitness MOT is a great way for your pupils to explore how their body can be affected with poor lifestyle choices. The most popular activity is the ageing photography, where pupils can see what they will look like at the age of 72 with the effects of smoking, UV sunlight and obesity added in.
