South West School Select is an annual directory of Educational Services available to schools across the South West. It has been produced in response to the growing demand from schools, education departments and local authorities for a practical guide to use when looking to expand or augment the national curriculum or to satisfy the requirements of the Social Disadvantage Subsidy Fund or new Pupil Premium. Inside, you will find many established practitioners, offering hundreds of unique and exciting services to schools. Each of the featured companies work as educators, providing a diverse approach to enhanced, alternative or extended education provision. School Select employs a uniquely informative layout with each page providing a detailed company profile; an overview of that company’s available services; their relevant qualifications; a testimonial and an outline of practical benefits for schools, teachers and pupils. Each page also includes an ‘at a glance’ guide to highlight those providers specialising in the following areas of education: Disengaged Pupils, Fundraising, Extended Schools Provision, Inset Days, Pre School Children, and SEN. School Select is a valuable addition to your decision making resources when looking to source external educational services. Whether you need cover for existing curriculum commitments or inspiration for new and stimulating ways to add interest, enrichment, diversity and value, School Select has a broad spectrum of professional, experienced providers to fulfil your requirements. the hothouse Making Music Come Alive! the hothouse delivers an unforgettable, hands on experience of music for children in school. A family-run company, directed by Felicity and Peter Scott, they present rhythm based drumtalk workshops, which inspire, challenge and excite, either as stand-alone experiential days or as a developmental programme.
“An absolutely outstanding experience for pupils and staff, truly enriching for the curriculum provision. Highly inclusive of all age groups and capabilities.” HN, Head teacher, South Brent Primary
For stand-alone experiential days they offer the big world band (a collection of drumming and percussion instruments from four continents providing an exiting multi-cultural mix). For developmental programmes they offer the same rhythmic approach, and apply it to African style drumming, Samba, Ukeleles or South-African style choral singing. The essence of the approach is to explore an easily accessible vocabulary of ‘universal’ rhythmic phrases which the children can very quickly build into a working practice. The results are very impressive. As one head teacher said recently after a day of the big world band, ‘It was amazing to see the high quality of performance achieved by our four classes, each class having had only 45 minutes with you.’ the hothouse harnesses each child's excitement and enthusiasm for making music, and, at the same time, trains their focus (listening, watching and awareness of what's happening), to enable the communication and team work necessary for creating a wonderful whole group musical experience. the hothouse travels with instruments for up to 40 participants per group. They can generally work with 4 – 6 class size groups in a day, with an option for a performance/celebration to finish. Alternatively they can work with one or two groups for longer and in greater depth. Performance/celebrations provide an exciting and bonding experience for a school, with lots of audience participation (including parents if appropriate). They anchor the developing skills and create a celebratory and supportive atmosphere that gives each child an opportunity to contribute to the best of their ability, and be recognised for doing so.
“One of the highlights of the school year...” MD, Henllys “Lots of energy, enthusiasm and pace...” RS, Milverton 6
“Inspirational... everyone loved it.” YS, Shepton Mallett
Key information R Travel to you with instruments for up to 40 participants R 4–6 class sized groups per day, with option for performance/celebration at the end of the day R Can also work with one or two groups in the day, or deliver ongoing series of sessions to work in greater depth

Integr8 Dance can offer your school a wide range of dance services to support your curriculum and extend your after school programme. Integr8 Dance Innovative Dance Workshops and Tuition
“Integr8 Dance has been working with our children for over a year and the work that they have done has been amazing. The after school dance club has offered the children a fantastic introduction to the Arts. We have seen a large improvement both in behaviour and academic work the children taking part, and they have become a group who work very well together. The opportunities for performance, have meant the children have really grown in confidence. We are very much looking forward to working with Integr8 dance next year, and would fully recommend them to other schools in Hampshire.” Nick Smith, Head teacher, Winnall Primary School
After School Clubs – Integr8 Dance currently offers after school clubs in many Hampshire schools, both Primary and Secondary. After school street squads teach a mix of Hip-hop and Break dance and are very popular among the children, even in the smallest primary schools, due to a high number of children wanting to learn this popular urban style. Clubs work together to create their own dance crew, with the options of competing at local and national competitions, under your school name. Special Educational Needs – Integr8 Dance specialise in being able to provide dance teaching to Special Needs schools in Hampshire with qualified, experienced teachers who understand the needs of children and young people with disabilities. As every school, class, and child is different they take an individual approach to every project. They have experience in working with Education Centres and are able to provide tailored one-on-one, or small group classes to young people struggling at school. Dance can improve confidence and self-esteem and have a wider impact on other areas of their lives. Integr8 can visit your school or Centre and discuss dance ideas to enhance your pupils’ dance experience. Primary Curriculum – The options for how Integr8 Dance can promote dance in your school, are endless. They work within the PE Curriculum to offer blocks of 6 or 12 dance lessons, often providing cover during PPA time. They can offer one off workshops to support a current project, such as African Dance, or for Key stage 1, ‘Hungry Caterpillar’ workshops, based on the book. Previous projects have seen Integr8 Dance teaching street dance at primary school discos, choreographing and directing school plays and supporting school teachers in the Rock Challenge. Secondary Curriculum – Integr8 also offer tutors of GCSE and A-level Dance to Secondary Schools and Colleges. They have some of the best qualified dance teachers with years of experience and can offer regular classes in your school, or one off workshops in contemporary or Hiphop to inspire students or complement your current programme. They can also provide dance weeks or days for activity weeks in Hiphop, contemporary or any other style, for all abilities.

They can do formal workshops and classes with clearly set objectives or they can supervise while participants simply ‘have a go’ at their own pace. In addition to classical circus skills Table Top Circus also offer workshops in Magic and balloon modelling. Magic Workshop – Magic is a fascinating subject for adults and children alike. In our workshop we get to explore how the eyes are deceived by simple illusions and how the mind can be tricked to make those illusions seem much bigger. Learn several strong astonishing illusions using ordinary household objects and then amaze your friends. Suitable only for children over 8 years old. A magic funshop is available for children aged between 5 and 8 years. Balloon Modelling Workshop – Make your own sculpture, hats and animals out of high quality modelling balloons which are provided. Aimed at the beginner, this is a lot of fun with the option of buying your own balloons to work with at home. A more advanced workshop is available by request. At the end of a circus workshop, a show is a great way for children to show their parents what they have achieved. Put into small groups, they are then left to plan and come with a short act to present to the rest of the group and parents. They are advised on what to include and the end result is something to be proud of. No two acts are ever the same! Benefits – All workshops have benefits for the children participating:

“David is absolutely brilliant - in the largest sense of the word! He both ‘shines’ and knows all of the component parts of how to create a meaningful and exciting learning experience for students, one with as-we-go delights and longer-term and sustained applicability.” Steven Holt, participant, performer and teacher
David’s standard or bespoke workshops are always highly active, challenging - and great fun! Shakespeare – an actor’s approach opens his participants’ eyes and ears to performance clues, providing a dynamic new approach to studying and working with Shakespeare and others' texts. “Tuesday's workshop with David Hall was a huge success: enlightening and exciting - a pure clinic in Shakespearean acting!” Andrew Hamm, Richmond Shakespeare Co, Virginia
His Voice Workshops introduce challenging and fun exercises to enhance and develop vocal range, techniques, strength and variety and apply it to a wide variety of work... “It's amazing what a huge effect your coaching had on my performance. I was infinitely more comfortable and loose. It really did make all the difference.” Katharine Dain, singing student, Guildhall School of Music
...whilst his energetic and hugely enjoyable Physical Theatre Workshops leave students and teachers with a treasure-chest of techniques which may be applied to all their future work. “He built a wonderful arc of experience.”
David is also very happy to bring his unique and dynamic approach and experience to bear on existing projects, scenes, speeches or productions. Trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, with John Wright and others, David's career includes TV, voice-overs, Shakespeare’s Globe, the Young Vic, Trestle, the English Shakespeare Co, and the National Theatre. For the Original Shakespeare Co he performed in the first full-length cue-scripted productions since Shakespeare’s day (using the first folio text, punctuation and spelling) and he regularly presents his highly successful Science, Maths and History shows nationwide - see the STEM section. David also facilitates Leadership and Presence programs globally and his hugely popular drama workshops have proved a great success on both sides of the Atlantic! “I can say with complete confidence that David will engage his learners in a powerful way and that they will leave with not only new skills, but also a renewed excitement for the craft itself.”

Attik Dance Learning Through Dance Attik Dance has 20 years’ experience of delivering high-quality dance in education. Specialising in contemporary dance, Attik helps students from primary level upwards to develop physical strength and fitness, and uses creativity to unlock the doors to learning. At any age, dance is a great way of improving communication and dealing with citizenship, while GCSE and A Level students can gain technical skills that count towards accreditation. Infant and primary education – Attik Dance offers three brilliant workshops to explore Maths, English and Science through dance. They are ideal opportunities for putting down books, turning off the whiteboard and doing something different... and fun. Maths – This workshop uses creative tasks, rhythm, problem solving and our bodies to explore measuring, shapes and adding and subtracting, multiplication, division and other curriculum content. It’s a stimulating and memorable way of looking at this familiar subject. English – Using our bodies to tell stories, explore settings and describe characters, we will bring the children’s ideas to life and give them bucket-loads of imaginative ingredients to take back to the classroom. Science – We use dance to investigate the wonderful world of science. Using our bodies and each other, we will explore forces, magnetism, changing states, life cycles and much more. Attik can also work with your school to devise a dance project to support your ideas and cross-curriculum development. Dance in a Day is an opportunity to create your own work to perform to the rest of the school or family and friends at the end of the day. Dance in Your Environment helps you to create a dance project focusing on your environment and raising the children’s awareness of their surroundings. In the past we have worked in a school’s local woods for a year to look at how it changes over the seasons, made a site-specific work for children on their local beach and created a pupil-led project with 150 primary school children dancing in the city centre. Secondary Schools, FE and HE – Attik can help support the dance provision in your school, college or university. We offer a range of opportunities, including: • • • • • • •
Choreographic starting points for solo and group work A technique class Making work for unusual spaces Thematic starting points Giving and sharing of weight Contact into lifting Introduction to technique followed by creative open session
Teachers Inset – Teachers can book a twilight, half- or full-day session. Sessions provide practical skills and useful lesson ideas supported by teaching notes. But don’t just take our word for it: “Superbly pitched to each group. All the tutors were confident and positive role models for our students. Their performance was fantastic and inspired our students. They really loved the workshop, many of our year 9 students have decided to opt for GCSE dance as a result. Children love banging on drums and making lots of noise. FabDrumming teaches them to play and create music together. Their school drumming workshops provide a fun and dynamic learning experience after which, your pupils will be energized, appreciative of each other and proud of their achievements. Drumming has many benefits; encouraging creativity, self expression and rhythmic coordination while also improving manual and psychomotor skills.
Performing Arts
FabDrumming Educational Drumming Workshops
Pupils require no prior knowledge of drumming or special musical skills. Everyone is given their own instrument and within minutes the class becomes an orchestra. Making music together and contributing your part, promotes a feeling of community and team spirit. FabDrumming workshops are a musical journey for children. The youngest discover different sounds and rhythms and learn basic music skills. The workshops can also include elements of storytelling, singing and dancing. For older children workshops go a step further, involving playing together and listening to each other. Pupils learn different rhythms and how to keep a steady beat. By doing a Drum circle they can also improvise their own music. All workshops are dynamic, rhythm-charged group experiences. While having fun, pupils discover the effect an individual has on the group, develop team skills and increase their listening and coordination skills. Playing and creating music together is a fun way to encourage bonding within the group. Workshops can also incorporate Body percussion and African singing and dancing. This can be traditional West-African dancing or South-African gumboot dancing. The workshop can be concluded with a performance, where pupils wear African costumes and show what they have learned. FabDrumming offers the following workshops: Drummunication – Play African and Latin American percussion instruments, such as djembe (African drum), bells and shakers. For group sizes up to 40, every child gets to play a drum. Junk percussion – Go green and make music with recycled instruments such as barrels, pots and pans, PVC tubes, etc. Drum circle – Combine creativity and teamwork by playing and creating music together. Body percussion – Make music without instruments. Body percussion uses hands, feet and voice to play rhythms and make music. Gumboot Dancing Workshop – A combination of body percussion and dancing involves hitting your boots with rhythmic slaps, hand clapping and feet stomping. African dance – Sing easy call-response songs and learn an uplifting African dance. Workshops also make ideal teambuilding exercises which will energise and inspire your teaching staff through the beauty and joy of the drumming experience.

Kaya Drums Creative Cultural Workshops
“I have worked with Alex (Kaya) in a family learning context, graffiti workshops and drumming workshops and he is always reliable, punctual, organized and works brilliantly with adults and children alike, however challenging their behavior. If I have a project that I think Alex could do he is always my first port of call. I have absolute confidence in his abilities and it is always fun working together.” Emma Procter, Extended Schools Network Co-ordinator, Trafalgar School, Downton
Kaya workshops support the aims of the National Curriculum (Key Stage 1 - 3 and Foundation Stage) by enabling pupils to learn about controlling sounds and creating and developing musical ideas while also understanding world cultures – African Native American and more. The most popular workshops are African Drumming (and Arts), Interactive Rhythm Circles and Native American Workshops. The workshops are always fun, dynamic and stimulating. You can learn traditional rhythms and improvise your own. Interaction is essential and they promote team spirit and awareness of each unique contribution to the group. Everything is learned through colourful and imaginative exercises and games, integrating confidence building, group cohesion, selfexpression, personal skills and lots of fun.
African Drumming (and Arts): Drumming - Using drums from across Africa the group is taken on an adventure through African music, each with their part to play. Learn dynamics, teamwork and musicality through the roots and rhythms of Africa. Art - Large scale backdrops, African shield and mask making all bring the vibrant colours and motifs of Africa to your workshop. Dance - Move into a world of dance and explore African culture through movement. Produce dance sequences and build them into a workable performance ready routine.
Interactive Rhythm Circles: These workshops are a fantastic platform to encourage self expression, build confidence, educate and engage. All workshops are fully interactive and are accessible to people of all ages and abilities. The range of different percussion instruments is outstanding.
Native American Workshops: Learn Traditional Songs, Stories, Drumming, Traditional Crafts and Cultural Practices. Kaya can run the workshops in classrooms, the hall or our Sioux-style Tipi. Kaya Drums are proud to have trained and worked with the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge and Seneca Indian Historical Society; a non-profit educational institution which is dedicated to preserving and disseminating the teachings of the Seneca Indians.

Fusion Media Arts Development Through Drama and Dance Fusion Media Arts is run by Kathleen – aka ‘Kaff’ – Brooks, an effervescent, highly creative Arts Practitioner who specialises in Performing Arts in Education. Working with schools on special projects, she brings to the classroom a wealth of experience, knowledge of teaching targets, plus a special ability to communicate and inspire. Kaff has worked as a teacher, lecturer and trainer for both Drama and Dance, and always adds a fun, dynamic dimension to any lesson. The focus of Fusion Media Arts is on creative learning and development for children, from Primary through to Key Stage 4. Making dance and drama as fun as they can possibly be, Kaff is able to unlock the imagination of the child, and enhance the school curriculum through exploration, communication, collaboration and creative thought. With over 20 years of experience and involvement in education, she has a deep understanding of school targets and curricula, always embedding current requirements for development and progression into her methods. Since schools don’t always have sufficient staff to meet all the specialist requirements for Dance and Drama, the rich experience, unique style and unstoppable energy that Fusion Media Arts brings in to the classroom can be an ideal solution for either regular sessions or larger special projects.
Achievement through active participation and collaboration Primary Fusion Media Arts follows the targets and changes proposed by the Primary Curriculum Review. This includes successful learning through enjoyment, creating confident individuals, exciting children’s imagination about the arts and developing their creativity. Kaff brings learning and thinking skills such as investigation, evaluation and communication into her projects. Improvisation, presenting and performing also enhance key skills, while dance and drama in general add to their breadth of learning. Key Stage 3 Embedding Dance within PE and Drama within English enriches the curriculum, however they can sometimes be neglected. Fusion Media Arts broadens and enhances these subjects, providing learners with enjoyable opportunities to reach their potential and achieve. Working on larger projects also challenges pupils to work collaboratively and reach a goal, while there is also often the opportunity to involve families and the local community.
14
Key Stage 4, 14-19 Because of the traditional focus on examination results, the 14-19 curriculum often creates a tension between maximising the learner’s potential within the areas where their strengths lie, and broadening their experience to develop a well-rounded student. An external specialist in Dance and Drama is valuable in stretching and challenging students who are following a Diploma in Creative and Media, for example. Even for those not studying creative subjects, Dance and Drama can be equally valuable, adding social, physical and expressive skills.
Key information

Jinga Communities - Capoeira Brazilian Dance and Music
“The combination of music, dance and communicative, noncontact martial arts has inspired and enthused both boys and girls, giving a whole new appreciation to dance as a whole, as well as a different culture and language!” Jen Dyer, Chacewater Primary, Truro, Cornwall
“Craig’s energy and enthusiasm for his classes ensure that the children are captivated.” Ben Orsborne, St Michael’s Primary, Helston
Capoeira is an improvised partner-based activity which improves confidence, social skills, fitness and rhythm; one which also teaches players about the language, history and traditions of Brazil and its roots in West Africa. Movement workshop (KS1-5) – Learn to sway like a banana tree and move like a monkey, cat and lizard as you build new relationships with your partner through movement and rhythm. As well as improving coordination, strength, flexibility and spatial awareness, this workshop improves communication, confidence and social skills through a ‘movement conversation’ with a partner. Using non-contact kicks and dodges, simple footwork and ground movements, the emphasis here is on individual expression, connection with a partner and control. Teachers can use this workshop to create final performance pieces. Jinga Community Cohesion Package (KS3-5) – A flexible curriculum-based project designed to run throughout a term which combines a selection of workshops (see above/below) and includes a national and international link-up with other projects in the UK, Brazil and Africa. Additional tasks for further study also included. Pupils will learn about how music and dance played a vital role in maintaining community cohesion across continents during slavery and how it is still being used today throughout the world to change lives and develop communities. Business seminars (KS4-5) – Director Craig Blackburn talks about his experience in setting up a Community Interest Company in Cornwall. Includes a Movement Workshop for pupils. Afro-Brazilian percussion workshops (KS1-5) – These sessions use capoeira and samba rhythms on instruments as well as hand clapping to improve timing, communication and rhythm. Instruments (provided): Agogo (cow bells), reco reco (guiro), pandeiro (tambourine), drums (Djembe, Conga & Atabaque) and berimbau (one-stringed, bow-like instrument unique to capoeira). Includes a brief cultural introduction to Brazilian history. Singing workshops (KS1-5) – Learn Brazilian Portuguese through call and response songs in a group. Learn about breathing, harmonies and group energy. Through translation of the African slave songs, participants will also gain an insight into an era of slavery and colonization.

Skip2BFit was started by professional boxing trainer John McCormack, a former No.2 ABA ranked Heavyweight of Great Britain. John’s passion for boxing and fitness training gave rise to the Skip2BFit programme, which has now proved a real hit with over 500,000 children (and their teachers). Combining the traditional fun element of skipping with a ‘new generation’ digital skipping rope, pupils are rediscovering the joys of exercise. “It was a FANTASTIC day enjoyed by all (children AND staff!). Our school is still buzzing from the event. Children are busy in the playground trying to improve their scores everyday; I would definitely recommend Skip2BFit to any school!” Vicky Tonkin PLT, Poltair School, St. Austell Cornwall
Make Every Second Count... Skip2BFit has developed their own unique Skipping Programme in a bid to help cut rising child obesity levels. It has been designed to educate children about fitness and healthy eating, as well as improving their maths and computer literacy, and to date has directly impacted the lives of over 500,000 children.
‘I have likened John with Jamie Oliver in that Jamie Oliver reminded us that diet and behaviour are associated, John reminds us that physical activity and mental capability are associated’ Andrew Scott-Clark Director of Public Health
‘The use of specially designed skipping ropes that count the skips proved a valuable tool for the children. Not only did it enable them to see their improvement but also enabled them to work out mathematically the progress they made on successive two minute skips skipping sessions’ Newlands Primary School
Skip2BFit use colourful and easy to use counting ropes that children love. They teach children how to skip like a boxer in five easy steps in a very short time. They then challenge the children to see how many skips they can do in two minutes. Skip2BFit have their own CD with tracks of music all timed for two minutes. After getting a score from their first skip, the children are then challenged to improve. It doesn’t matter what the first was, it may be two or 200, but anyone can improve and the majority do. By doing this, they experience that effort and perseverance can lead to success. We call this the ‘yes feeling’, and this can be transferred into the classroom, to help motivate and achieve.

Allnatt Venues Outdoor Learning and Activities Allnatt Venues have been a leading provider of residential visits for Schools, Colleges and Universities since 1924. They have developed long term partnerships with many educational establishments. All programmes cover a number of curriculum matched topics aimed at all key stages.
The Coastal Discovery and Adventure Programme allows children to discover the wonders of the environment through hands on learning experiences in fantastic locations on the world heritage coastline. Sessions include: Trailblazing along coastal areas, environmental activities, sustainable survival skills, team challenges, sunset walks, creating environmental art and lots more. The Outdoor Adventure Programme balances risk and adventure using outdoor adventurous activities developing self confidence and teamwork. Children are actively involved throughout the session and guided to support and encourage each other. Sessions operate with the challenge by choice idea in mind which means pupils are not forced to participate in activities if they don’t want to as this will have a negative effect. Sessions include: Night Navigation Challenge & Orienteering, Ropes Course, Climbing and Abseiling, Archery, Team Building & Pioneering, Overnight Bivi, and Bush Craft. Team work is a valuable life skill that any person can learn. It is essential throughout life be it at school, in the work place or in a social environment. These programmes are designed to challenge groups in a way which helps them to develop their personal skills and their ability to work in a team with great emphasis on setting goals and using them to build self-esteem and positive relationships within the group. The activities can include: Nightwalk Challenge & Orienteering, Ropes Course, Climbing and Abseiling, Initiative Exercises & Pioneering, Overnight Bivi & Bush Craft, Trailblazing, Environmental games and Environmental Art. Environmental Creativity – is a highly innovative programme that dispels the notion that Outdoor Education is confined to physical activity and uses hands on approach to give children empathy with different habitats they work in. This is achieved through educational games which introduce new ideas and skills through play. The activities available on this programme can include Trailblazing through coastal, grassland, heathland and sand dune environments, sustainable survival skills, team building exercises, sunset walk, creating environmental art and lots more.

Adventure Activities
Hill House Christian Centre Residential Activity Centre Set in 15 acres of rural Somerset, Hill House Christian Centre is a fantastic location for school residential trips, Just 8 miles from Jct 24 on the M5 Motorway on the edge of the Qauntock Hills. The Centre provides a programme to excite, challenge and encourage pupils to appreciate and enjoy the environment around them while also learning to value each other. A residential experience is a great opportunity to explore the whole person allowing pupils to develop personal and social skills, build self esteem and learn more about themselves. “Hill House combines fantastic facilities and activities within a supportive, Christian ethos which perfectly matches that of our school. Children are supported and guided but at the same time challenged and stretched so that they are happy and comfortable to push themselves outside of their comfort zone and try something new.” Janine Ashman, Yr 6 Teacher, Trinity Anglican Methodist Primary School
“This genuinely is a home away from home…great food, inspirational leaders and beautiful surroundings, a memorable experience for all the right reasons!” Emma Charlton, Yr 6 Teacher, St Andrew’s CofE Primary School Weymouth
It also aims to link activities with the curriculum to provide relevant, interactive, dynamic and inspirational lessons that bring the residential experience to life, all within the context of a Christian ethos. Sometimes activities are seen as a separate part of any educational programme but they can be used very effectively to help develop a whole range of experiences. Activities provide a mix of opportunities involving problem solving, decision making, teamwork, etc and whilst retaining the fun element of the activities there are many attitudes that can be encouraged. Your week can be as full and active as you wish. Programmes are a mix of fun and learning, with plenty of on site activities and a day where you have the choice of ‘doing your own thing’, or doing high ropes, low ropes, kayaking, raft and bridge building, or rock climbing and caving. Adventure Activities
The Rock Centre Learning Through Participation The Rock Centre was established in 1979 and is now based at Finlake Leisure Park, Chudleigh. Their aim is to provide a friendly, professional and safe experience while endeavouring to create the most amenable environment possible for participants. They offer a choice of venues from limestone sea cliffs to majestic granite tors with breath taking views across the unique landscape of the Dartmoor National Park.
Working with small, manageable groups enables students to gain the most from their visit. Little time is wasted sitting around waiting for turns. Climbing and abseiling groups work with one instructor to four pupils. Abseiling is a skill which can be learnt by anybody. Abseiling is an exhilarating, challenging and fun part of climbing, mountaineering and potholing and even timid participants can become proficient quickly. Rock Climbing demands very different skills from abseiling. Natural ability coupled with determination and a positive approach, will result in success. The novice routes used to introduce rock climbing are carefully chosen to provide challenge and excitement while still remaining within the capabilities of participants. Indoor Climbing is one of the fastest growing activities and The Rock Centre offer introductory sessions with experienced instructors or more advanced sessions for experienced climbers. Caving can evoke some fear in the minds of first time cavers. Sessions are therefore approached with sympathetic and patient understanding and plenty of encouragement. The two local caves used are Pridhamsleigh and Bakers Pit which offer numerous routes and are ideal for novices, while still providing an excellent caving experience. Caving groups need to be small ensuring easy communications, good group management and safety procedures. This is normally one instructor to a maximum of five or six students, with an extra assistant instructor where necessary. The Rock Centre also offers Tree Top Adventure courses; a new extreme adventure in the branches high above the ground. Spend a fun filled session moving from tree to tree on zip slides, Tyroleans, cable bridges, airy platforms, and balance beams. Enjoy bird’s eye aerial views in complete safety from a unique and thrilling vantage.
30
The Rock Centre also operate a Mobile Climbing Wall that provides an excellent facility with ten routes of varying difficulty. The wall allows schools to enjoy the climbing experience without the need for travel arrangements and guarantees as much climb time as possible for your group. Bouldering is another activity that provides an excellent warm up exercise and learning resource that is particularly useful on wet days or dark evenings.

Blazing Tales Expression Through Arts
Specialist artists and educators combine storytelling, songwriting, visual art and digital media to deliver themed workshops for all key stages. A highly interactive workshop style gives a refreshing, holistic approach to learning and skills development; appealing to diverse learning styles and abilities. Workshops integrate the arts towards an original, achievable goal with pupils. Blazing Tales access all areas, particularly working in the environment or on heritage themes. Excellent workshop organisation provides scaffolding for the artists to guide pupils towards establishing and following through their own ideas. Embedding a rich learning experience with a participatory, encouraging philosophy that helps to build confidence, team working, communication skills and self-esteem. Traditional oral storytelling and story making liven up speaking, listening and literacy. Writing new songs and compositions give a sense of ownership and a quality musical experience. Visual art creates tangible ‘thing/s’ that bring it all to life and pupils can use technology to record or transform. Themes may either be supplied by the teacher or developed through collaboration between staff and artists in order to produce a workshop which provides dynamic and relevant learning opportunities for all involved while satisfying your curriculum demands. If you’re looking to work with two to four artists you can certainly benefit from booking an established team. Blazing Tales suit: arts weeks, heritage celebrations, longer or partnership projects, nights in the museum, for example, and they are experienced at leading residentials and training. Previous projects include: Jupiter and the Changing Animals – over two days Year 5 wrote a musical shadow puppet play based on an unknown fable by a celebrity from the town in 1700’s, and performed publicly. Victorians, WW2, Present day – Three days exploring how these times affected the school and local area. Exploricating – an outside, slow, walking workshop exploring the immediate environment and developing ‘findings’. Promoting knowledge and understanding of the world for foundation stage and KS1 as well as launching a platform for projects such as the ‘Big Write’ or ‘Big Draw’ for KS2.

Mosaic Madness Mosaic Murals for Schools David Bowers is a passionate and experienced Community Mosaic Artist working with schools to create a range of mosaic projects for their environment. He believes the best school art is created by the children/students and he directs and assists them in creating mosaics through the stages of design, cutting, tiling and grouting.
Projects can be inside or outside, floor or wall based and can be created by one class, one year or the whole school. Every child can then say, “I helped to make that,” and this will improve self esteem and motivation, while everyone has lots of fun. School projects include: Wall Murals and Signs – designed to fit any specified location, inside or out. Floor Murals – use concrete paving slabs and can be any design or shape. Column Murals – using recycled chimney pot or ceramic drain up to 1.8m height. Human Sundial – this type of sundial is ground based, allowing children or adults to become part of the mechanism. Cross or Crucifix – ranging from 0.8m, to the most popular 1.8m high. Seating – come in any shape or size and usually based on a brick or block construction and are priced based on surface area. All materials used are suitable for external use. The tiles are swimming pool tiles which are slightly thicker and so offer less risk of cuts and they come in a wide range or colours including different skin tones and school jumper colours. Each project leaves a permanent mosaic for the school to enjoy but participants will also benefit from: • Designing and creating something from start to finish. Mosaics are instant art and accessible at every stage, especially the messy grouting. • Creating something that can be seen everyday from outside the school, for a child it must be great to see something you created even after you have left the school. It also allows the wider community to see the children’s artwork either in situ or in the local press. • Mosaics is just a big jigsaw, which means you can have a whole school project which even the little ones can take part in... sky or grass is always a safe area, although you have to check for upside down tiles!
34
• David encourages each school to have a TA allocated to the project to learn the basics of mosaics so they can then do further in house projects.

Art is about much more than creating images and objects. It has a powerful effect on the way we think, behave and experience the world. All over the UK, schools are harnessing the latent power in their pupils through art workshops. Yes, they’re fun, but their main purpose is to bring about positive change across a huge range of situations, both personal and school-related.

Art Works Puppet and Animation Workshops Art Works was founded in 1996 by artist and puppeteer Steve Newton, and provides a range of creative shadow puppet and animation workshops to schools across the South West and in Ireland. Shadow puppet workshops are preceded by a shadow puppet theatre performance in his shadow puppet theatre that demonstrates to the children what magic can be produced from a simple silhouette of cut card. The shows last for 45 mins and can be performed to the whole school or just to those children attending the workshop. “I believe in the encouragement of personal creativity. Everyone has creative potential. ART WORKS offers high quality experiences in a number of art disciplines, through which I aim to instill confidence, developing communication, creativity and a sense of fun in the groups and with the individuals with whom I work.” Steve Newton
Workshops for the day involve children making their own shadow puppets using card and coloured gels. If time allows, they devise their own simple shows in small groups and can then perform these shows to each other, or to another class. The day is suitable for Keystage 1 children upwards and you can easily see what other curricular activities are involved in such a day and what ‘follow on’ things can be planned. There are three shows to choose from. In addition Steve also provides: Puppet Making – workshops tailored to your groups needs. All workshops are simple enough to enable the less able to produce a workable puppet and yet adaptable enough for the more able to spend time developing their puppets character. Junk Puppets – using recycled milk containers as puppet heads are particularly popular and very adaptable - whatever your theme. I also offer training for those who wish to work with their own groups. Mask-making – simple enough to enable the less able to produce a wearable mask and yet adaptable enough for the more able to spend time developing the masks character. The masks are created from cardboard template designs which can be built into the creature or character, using scrap card, newspaper and masking tape. The end result is remarkably strong and visually stunning. I also offer training for those who wish to work with their own groups.
38
Animation Workshops can be magical, but when the magicians are the children in your classroom it also becomes an enjoyable but purposeful teaching aid for many subjects. The finished animation can possess a visual novelty which helps to make the subject more appealing. The final animation can further increase your children’s self esteem by being shown on the internet or at festivals or even by being used as a direct teaching aid in other classes or schools. Because the production process can embrace varied skills including writing, drawing, sculpting, music, audio-visual design and computer literacy, it can also provide students with an opportunity to explore their individual strengths and interests across the curriculum. Stop Motion Pro is used to create the animation.

Don Newton has worked in West Country schools as a teller of traditional tales and poetry, a puppeteer and craft worker, since 1987. Working predominantly in the primary/pre school sector he adapts his stories and workshops to each age group, convinced that all learning begins with Creative Play, where children can extend their horizons; learn to take risks and imagine solutions to problems but without real life consequences. “I thought I would let you know how impressed we all were with the day you provided us with last week. The children were thrilled with their puppets and the parents were equally impressed. We had the local press in on Friday and they took photos of the puppets and heard responses from The children. Thank you again we would highly recommend your workshops to any school.” Mel Johns Culmstock Primary

Rough Magic Storytelling, Poetry & Craft Workshops
Don’s storytelling and poetry workshops awaken this creative involvement, stimulating the imagination and the joy of words to express feelings. His puppet and craft work does exactly the same while increasing spatial awareness and problem solving. Every craft session and workshop begins with a Traditional Tale which is great fun and puts everyone in a relaxed mood. All of Don’s work can be tailored to any area of The National Curriculum, so if you have a particular request, please ask. Story Telling Performance & Workshops – emphasises that telling a story is ‘painting pictures with words’ and explains how all storytellers use the six magic words to create their tales - WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, WHY AND WHO. The children, working in small groups use chance-picked objects from a ‘magic bag’ to create their own tales and recount them. Poetry Sessions – explore how to think in `images` and brainstorm why a poet writes a poem. Their `drive` to put into words a particular experience and the feelings it evokes. Don reads a few examples to illustrate this and the group choose one poem and examine it in detail. Shadow Puppets – shows can incorporate any theme you wish, within reason and with notice. Jonathan's Jungle Roadshow specialises in providing professional animal encounter sessions that are educational, interactive and lots of fun for all involved. Jonathan, a former school teacher and lifelong naturalist, maintains a large and varied private collection of truly amazing invertebrates and reptiles and travels across central and southern England to provide his unique service to as wide an audience as possible.
“The best teaching session I have seen a visitor provide in my 20+ years in education. Jonathan's manner with the children, the level and content of the information given and the way in which he involved everybody in the room whilst respecting the concerns of a few of our children was exemplary. The use of a video camera to display animals like the tarantula on our interactive whiteboards was incredible.”

Jonathan's Jungle Roadshow Animal Encounters in School
Primary School Headteacher
Jonathan is able to provide age-appropriate presentations for any group from Pre-school through to College & beyond and provides children & adults with the opportunity to gain handson, personal experience of some absolutely wonderful animals as part of a truly memorable educational experience. Some sessions allow Jonathan’s amazing animals to be experienced really close up! By using his video camera's supermacro function and a suitably connected big screen (interactive whiteboard/large panel TV) it is possible to highlight tiny details on the animals which would normally remain unseen.
Whilst many of the workshops are tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Science curriculum for particular year groups, each topic can be adapted for children of any age, including Foundation Stage 2 and pre-school children. Just a few examples of available workshop topics include: • Minibeasts/Rainforests/Animal senses • Life cycles/Habitats & adaptation • Moving, growing & changing/Reproduction • Variation & classification/Wildlife conservation Finally, sessions can be ‘just for fun’ and not have a focus on any particular topic, but simply be an opportunity for the children (and adults) to meet these amazing animals up close and personally!

Our innovative and inspirational learning programme is delivered by a team of dedicated marine biologists, qualified teachers and resident artists. They aim to maintain a reputation for excellence in informal environmental education and bring the marine environment into the classroom.
“The project we were involved with was very well organised and implemented, as well as engaging for the pupils. It was a unique and inspirational opportunity for mixing science with media, which all pupils enjoyed.” Coombe Dean School, Plymouth
“The Aquarium offers a great versatility to meet a wealth of curriculum objectives and the children learn so much without really realising that they are learning.” Ford Primary School, Plymouth
The National Marine Aquarium is dedicated to raising awareness of the oceans, the challenges they face and the ways in which we can all help ensure they have a sustainable future. The exhibits offer an ideal environment for school groups to learn in a relaxed and fun atmosphere, whichever visit type you choose. Interactive Tours – Led by the learning team, the Aquarium visit is brought to life with a two hour guided tour. The tour is informal, learner centered and engaging for all ages while covering a number of key curriculum areas. Teachers can select from a range of topics provided on booking or create their own bespoke package of learning outcomes. Explorer Visits – Alternatively, the needs of the group can still be catered for with a self-led aquarium visit. The group will have the freedom to explore the aquarium at a suitable pace while benefitting from the help of the host team who are on hand to answer any questions about the animals. Factsheets and other resources are available on request. Workshops – Both the above visit types have the added option of a workshop to compliment the trip. These cover a range of topics from classification to water chemistry, dissection to plastic pollution. Immersion Days – These consist of a full day of activities and are designed to creatively challenge students and illustrate the importance of maths, science and media in the working world.

The Alpaca Park is set in 100 acres of beautiful Devon countryside where visitors have the opportunity to observe these uniquely endearing creatures up close. The Alpaca Park is a family attraction catering for all age groups. Visitors can enjoy the two mile Alpaca Trail, a stunning riverside walk which meanders through rare Devon grasslands and wet woodlands where Moorland ponies graze and some of the rarest Devon wildlife, flora and fauna can be seen.
Environment and Nature
The Alpaca Park Nature Walks and Wildlife
The pathway leads to Badgers Rest where visitors encounter an abundance of seasonal flowers and marvel at the beautiful butterflies dipping and weaving around the bubbling stream. Look out for the Deer, Otters and Kingfishers along the trail also. There are shorter pathways which circle the home paddocks where the mums and cria (alpaca young) graze, laze or play together in their herds. Visitors often comment about the peace and tranquility they feel while at The Alpaca Park. The Alpacas are sometimes referred to as Earth’s Dolphins because of their gentle presence and relaxing qualities. The Alpaca Park is available for school visits on every level from pre-school to sixth formers. There are a wide range of facilities on offer and the park can always be relied upon to provide an interesting and varied scope for any of the key stages or specific study areas. For pre-school children, even a "Wellie Walk" through the woods or egg rolling can be fun and educational. A close look at the Alpacas and fleece touching is extremely popular and can be built into any visit. The team at the Alpaca Park is happy to discuss your needs and help you tailor your visit accordingly. Their passion for the care and protection of native wildlife is paramount. You will not find any penned or caged wildlife at The Alpaca Park. They strive to strike a balance between being able to observe the rich collection of wildlife that live on and around The Park and allowing them a safe, free to roam existence. The park cannot guarantee that you will see all the many varied species to be found there but encourage visitors to record sightings or tracks seen in their Wildlife Inventory to help keep track of the population. Devon Wildlife Trust have assessed the park and advised on the many aspects needed to provide such important habitats. They have been extremely supportive and share the excitement of having so many different categories of grasses, flowers, butterflies, birds and mammals there especially in the Culm fields.

Science Shows by Richard Ellam Richard Ellam’s Science Shows are an enthralling combination of good science, amazing demonstrations, audience involvement, storytelling and bad jokes which really bring his subjects to life. Most of Richard’s shows are about physical science and engineering topics, which reflects his engineering background and his love of the history of science and technology. Based near Bristol he travels the length and breadth of the country taking his unique brand of science communication to audiences in schools, museums and science festivals. All Richard’s shows contain lots of curriculum-related material, but their content is never constrained by the curriculum. Richard believes in the importance of taking ideas where they naturally lead, and is keen to show how scientific ideas matter in everyday life. The human side of science is not forgotten in Richard’s shows, and where appropriate he likes to introduce well known scientists as rounded human beings.
Shows for Primary and Secondary schools Seeing Things – What optical illusions teach us about how we see the world. Simple Machines – All about wheels, gears, chains, pullies and hydraulics. The Great Train Show: Forces in Context – science behind trains – forces, friction, gradients, arches, beams and air resistance. The Air Show – Air and the Earth's atmosphere - what air is made of, why it exerts pressure (and what happens in a vacuum), how balloons and aeroplanes fly, and a pillar of fire! The Fire Show – Richard’s most popular show. Answers all you burning questions about fire: what burns and why, what happens when things burn, and what can we do with the energy we get from fire?
Shows for Secondary schools only Galileo and the Stolen Telescope – Did Galileo really invent the telescope? Could it help him to prove that the Earth orbits the Sun? This costumed show investigates the truth behind Galileo’s legend, to shed light on scientific method and how science works. It's About Time – What is time, how do we measure it, and how has timekeeping changed over, er, time? New Shows – Richard is developing new shows on electricity and on inventions which should be available later in 2011. These shows will be suitable for both Primary and Secondary schools. Have a look on his website for progress updates and expected availability. Richard charges a competitive daily rate with no hidden extras, like mileage charges or hotel bills, to find on top. In a day he will present at least three 45 minute shows, He can always bring two different shows with him if required, and maybe more, depending on what will fit in his van!

David Haines Science Through Song Currently songwriter-in-residence with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Millennium Seed Bank, David Haines is a science-mad composer based in Devon. Much of his work is community-based, forging creative relationships with schools, colleges, pre-schools, youth and community groups, theatres and science institutions, writing new and often educational materials either alone or as part of his Workshops and Residencies programme. “What a wonderful thing you are doing, and the songs are very catchy! I wish more people saw science as inspirational!” Amanda Gefter, New Scientist magazine “One of the most intense and magical pieces of public engagement with science that I have ever encountered.” John Durant, world's first Professor of the Public Understanding of Science, currently Director of the MIT Museum
“It was, for me, the most moving school event I have ever been involved with in over 25 years of teaching.” David Gibbard, Headteacher of Dunsford Primary School, Devon (after a performance of Lifetime - songs of the science of life and evolution)
David can offer visits to schools lasting anything from a morning upwards. He works with all ages from pre-school through primary and secondary up to college level and beyond, teaching and explaining his science songs or helping students write their own from scratch. David's songwriting sessions induce a "creative fervour" in the group, a state of shared inspiration which produces brilliant lyrics and catchy melodies. His songs are “educational” in that they help pupils learn facts and figures but also celebrate science; communicate enthusiasm for the endless vistas of knowledge and discovery that science opens up; bring out the humour in science, the weirdness of it, the mystery of it, the wonder, beauty, excitement, and awesomeness. David offers many support materials and resources for a gradually-expanding selection of songs on his publishing website www.singtastic.com. David has worked with thousands of schoolchildren and students as visiting composer or composer-in-residence throughout the UK and the USA, having delivered over 150 workshops in Massachusetts, Missouri, Texas, California and the Washington DC area - where his work Powers of Ten opened the national USA Science and Engineering Festival on 10.10.10.
50
UK residencies include: 18 months at Gatehouse Primary School, Dawlish, where he worked with all 300 pupils to develop singing skills, performance skills, song-learning (from Tudor madrigals to pop songs) and songwriting (including publishing a songbook). He also mounted productions of his own children's musicals and concerts of songs the children themselves had written. Ivybridge Community College where he wrote, rehearsed and produced a full-length musical, The Terrorthon (about a hostage crisis) in a single term; a production described by Deputy Head Alan Howson as "the best school/college production that I have ever attended." Creative Partnerships funded a CARA2 project which saw David spend a year in residence at three rural Devon schools, researching the impact upon children's attitudes to learning of acquiring songwriting skills through workshop processes.

Explorer Dome Hands-on Science Shows Explorer Dome is a portable planetarium visiting schools and colleges across the South West. Based in Bristol, we present exciting, interactive shows which complement the National Curriculum and aim to make science inspiring for all ages and abilities.
Our talented team of highly-trained, enthusiastic presenters are all scientists in disciplines ranging from astrophysics to zoology. Two presenters come to you, keeping the shows lively and interactive. Couple this with fun demonstrations and the awe-inspiring atmosphere of the Dome and you can see how Explorer Dome is one of the most well respected science outreach programmes in the UK and brings science alive to over 60,000 children every year. “Extremely professional and knowledgeable staff covered curriculum-relevant areas with verve and excitement!” Hyde Park Junior School, Plymouth
“Genuinely fantastic – better than a 6 week teaching block!” Bickleigh Down Primary School, Plymouth
Explorer Dome presents shows on a range of science topics – Space, Light, Forces, Sound, Environment and the Human Body, all within the magical atmosphere of the Dome. Our presentations are geared towards specific age groups, from Foundation and KS1 up to A-Level, adult education and teacher training events. We are also regular visitors to festivals, fairs, holiday play-schemes, cub scouts and brownies (not to mention the occasional party!). What is required for a Dome visit? The Dome can be set up in any large room or hall with a smooth, clean floor area of 6x7 metres, a clear ceiling height of 3.5 metres and access to mains power points. How do I plan a visit? The Dome accommodates up to 30 primary or 25 secondary-aged children/adults per show and shows last 40-50 minutes. On a normal day we can present up to 6 or 7 shows, although bear in mind that the Dome will be in the school hall during lunch. It is usually possible to have more than one type of show during the day, so classes working on different topics can often choose a show to suit their requirements. Certain times of the year book up many months in advance, so please see our website for a general guide to our availability. How much will it cost? A visit for schools in and around Bristol costs £180 for the first two shows, then £80 per additional show (plus VAT). For schools further afield, we may have to charge for a minimum of three shows – please enquire for further details. Chemistry Shows – We also have a range of Chemistry shows suitable for all Key Stages. These do not take place in the Dome, so only require a room or laboratory large enough for your audience and a demonstration area. Topics include: ‘The Bubble Show’, ‘States of Matter’ and ‘Science Tricks’. See our website for further details.

Architecture Workshops Building The Curriculum The Architecture Workshops Association are a small not-for-profit educational organisation, working throughout the UK in Schools, Colleges and Universities. Their Reception to Sixth form Architecture Workshops have been making learning fun since 1996. Designed for all Key Stages, these unique handson experiences of integrated curricular activities bring together the six strands of the national curriculum's Pupil Learning & Thinking Skills Framework. “We were impressed at how the pupils were given an opportunity to apply various skills in the workshop and were delighted at how much fun they were clearly having. The staff were highly impressed with the quality of the experience and the way the session was run. They have already requested a return visit and we will certainly recommend you to other schools.” Lindsay Fry, Deputy Headteacher, Corsham Primary Sch. Wiltshire
The workshops engage pupils in 3d visual problem solving, both individually and as a team, using a mix of higher order and creative thinking strategies. Workshops are adapted to suit pupils abilities, enabling G&T students and SEN students to have the same workshops experience. Increasingly used for extension/ enrichment, PSHCE and citizenship activities for KS3, 4 & 5. The workshops engage students in fun activity whilst helping them develop as Creative Thinkers, Effective Participants, Independent Enquirers, Self Managers and Team Workers, through a combination of individual and group work, design problem solving and creativity. Underlying the requirements for communication, co-operative skills, logistical reasoning, critical evaluation and self reflection. The Workshops are split into two categories: ‘Build-It’: Focused Practical Tasks, using design technology, maths, literacy, science, history and drama to differing degrees pupils create large scale reconstructions of famous architectural landmarks, i.e. Egyptian Pyramids; Greco-Roman Temple; Tudor Globe Theatre; Victorian Crystal Palace. ‘Kre8’ workshops stimulate pupil’s imagination, interpretative and visual problem solving skills helping to develop higher order thinking strategies. Focusing on investigation, Disassembly and Evaluation as Design and Make assignments. Working in teams, pupils use DT skills, Maths and Science to design and build large scale structures i.e: Bridges; Shelters; Olympic Sculptures; Skyscrapers. Kre8 workshops at KS 3 &4 are often run as year group or inter-school competitions by our regular clients. Key Stage 1 (inc. reception) – Using number, counting, shape and space pupils work together to build simple modular forms, which go on to form the basic parts of most KS2 workshops.
54
Secondary design course – Developed to help spatial awareness and visualisation skills of older students considering further study in architecture and design. The spatial interventions of 3D art and architecture are explored through precedent study with the students developing their ideas further as abstract art and architecture; introducing site and locality. Students consider environmental impact of their designs in relation to existing urban developments and green field sites.

Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience What was it like during World War II? How did it feel to be a British Citizen? What did people eat and wear? Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Museum answers these questions and more. It recreates the London Blitz with special effects highlighting the sights, the sounds, the artefacts, and even the dust, smoke and smell of an air raid at its height.
“Spot on for National curriculum for all age groups – quite amazing!” Dr. Anthony Freeman, Government, History Advisor
“I thought I was back in the war, it was unbelievable. All children should visit this nostalgic and moving experience to see what it was really like for the ordinary people during World War 2.” Dame Vera Lynn
The museum has an astonishing collection of evocative photographs and an enormous number of actual relics. Everything from toilet rolls and soap to an Anderson shelter, you can sit in and hear air raids overhead. There are shops displaying what was available for purchase during the war years and a feature devoted to Winston Churchill. The education packs available for primary schools include activity sheets intended to support National History Curriculum Key Stage 2 Core Study Unit 4 - Britain Since 1930. The particular emphasis is on the experience and impact of the Second World War in Britain and covers topics including: Sheltering in the Underground, Gas Masks, Anderson Shelters Rationing, Fighting Fires, Evacuation, and The Blackout. For secondary schools activity sheets are linked with the main themes of ‘Britain at War Experience’ and form part of the study programme for the History National Curriculum key stage 3, Core Study unit 5 - The era of the Second World War with particular emphasis on the experience and impact of war, and the home front in Britain. There are four titles: ‘Air Raid precautions’ ‘Andersons and the Underground’ ‘Women in Wartime’ and ‘The Blitz’. Each unit includes an introduction to the area of study and acts as a stimulus to further enquiry. The suggested activities are of varying levels of difficulty and may be used for individual work or group discussion. They invite pupils to develop their understanding of the Second World War, to think about the experiences that are recreated in the Supplement and to explore their own attitudes and reactions.

The museum allows pupils to use a range of historical Artefacts, Documents, Posters, Printed Resources, Pictures and photographs, Film Music and Sound Recordings. Tasks have been designed with National Curriculum Attainment Targets in mind, but are not connected to specific targets or levels, as these will vary according to the age and ability of each group.

Kaya Drums Native American Workshops Specialists in Native American workshops since 1994, Kaya are acknowledged as an authority in their field and offer Native American workshops with a direct link to genuine teaching. We share music, crafts, stories and wisdom with all ages. It is important to us to acknowledge our teachers and many of our workshops are designed around the teachings of the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge.
Traveling the Path of Balance It has long been the tradition of the Wolf Clan Teaching Lodge/Seneca Indian Historical Society and Grandmother Twylah to reach out to the many Peoples of Noh-yeh-ohnjeh, Motherearth, and share the Earth Wisdom, Prophecy and Philosophy of the Seneca. It is a Dream of Peace long in the unfolding of time coming forward in our consciousness and shared from our hearts...
Workshops Drumming – The Frame or Thunder Drum is the traditional instrument for many American Indians and is used for ceremony and celebration. Participants will have the opportunity to play one of these drums whilst singing, dancing and telling stories. Traditional Songs and Chants – All of the songs and chants we share were taught to us directly and have been sung for many, many generations - The Wolf, Bear and Crow songs are the most popular. We also teach chants and songs from other tribes. Crafts – The craft workshops we run are more than just an exercise in creating something wonderful - the process of creating is a way to share and explore ideas of personal growth and understanding. The colours and images chosen all have a particular meaning to each individual and their community, family and school. This approach means that Kaya's workshops have been very effective at engaging everyone, even the most disengaged. Stories – We don't just tell the stories, we make space for the whole group to make the stories come to life with acting, dancing and drumming - everyone is involved in re-telling these wonderful stories with many lessons and hidden meanings waiting to be unearthed. Sharing Through Oral Tradition “Native Oral Tradition, in its very essence, is a heart teaching. When wisdom is shared from person to person; heart to heart the message is sent out and received energetically from one heart to another. This is a direct path with no deviations. The most important aspect of our journey, as guides and teachers, is to touch as many individuals heart to heart as we can, on our mission of Peace.” Nya:weh Sge:no (Thank you for being)

HealthTec South West Hands-on Health HealthTec South West offers hands-on practical experience of science and health & social care through true-to-life scenarios. With its specially equipped centre in Plymouth, students gain valuable knowledge and understanding of skills used by health professionals to enhance the curriculum through interactive learning. They learn how to use real hospital equipment, find out about NHS employment opportunities and discover the exciting role of a scene of crime officer. “Showing the practical side really helped me understand more.” Student “The entire day was excellent – difficult to select the best bit.” Teacher from Truro/Penwith College
A range of full and half-day courses at the centre in Plymouth offer a variety of interactive scenarios, delivered by qualified health professionals and practitioners, covering a wide spectrum of the 14-19 curriculum including Science, Health & Social Care, PSHEE and Citizenship. Facilities include an ambulance, an A&E triage area, a hospital ward, rehabilitation room and a mock bedsit to allow students to get hands on in realistic simulations using authentic professional equipment. HealthTec are working to support the PSHEE and Citizenship curriculum, in particular addressing regional issues including teenage pregnancy, mental health and risk taking behaviour. These issues are addressed in the use of one day, targeted scenarios.
A selection of the scenarios at HealthTec South West The Patient Journey – Students experience the patient journey of a heart attack casualty and help to diagnose the reason for the attack by looking at their lifestyle. They will discover the different roles in the NHS and how they work together, while learning about the science behind the heart attack and its associated treatment. The basics of CPR, A&E staff and equipment, treatment in a hospital ward and rehabilitation are all covered. Care of Older People – In a simulated environment, students learn how to overcome a variety of physical and sensory impairments by experiencing the difficulties of disabilities and impairments through specialist equipment. They will experience what it is like to suffer from the various conditions and complaints that affect the elderly, such as arthritis and visual impairment by wearing ‘age suits’ and ‘goggles’. Forensic Science – Students are tasked with investigating a crime scene, collecting evidence and following the procedures of an investigating team to identify their suspect and put them on trial. The scenario requires students to record evidence and learn various techniques, such as fingerprinting, collecting fibres and analysing footprints. Working together, students will also take witness statements. This is relevant for students studying forensic science but it is also appropriate for the justice element of the SHD Diploma and general science.

JustDifferent Learning About Disability and Difference JustDifferent is a dynamic charity founded in 2007 by Toby Hewson, a young man with Cerebral Palsy. It aims to help create positive social attitudes towards disability and difference among children and young people through free, stimulating and educational workshops. Created and delivered by disabled people, these interactive workshops are designed to help pupils think more imaginatively about the world they live in, and the diversity of the people within it. “Toby is the best speaker I’ve ever seen. I’ve never witnessed the boys so interested and touched by a speaker before. It was brilliant, I’m so glad I came along.” Teacher, Magdalen College School
Aiming to make a positive difference to the lives of disabled and non-disabled people through education, JustDifferent provides innovative, interactive and exciting Primary and Secondary workshops that challenge out-dated or misinformed perceptions. Specifically trained to contribute to the social and emotional education of young people, our presenters are engaging, modern-day story tellers bringing a light-hearted attitude to disability and difference. Why we do it – We see a world in which difference is always valued. The earlier children and young people begin to learn about disability and difference, the more likely they are to accept it as a normal part of the world in which they live. Our workshops give pupils the opportunity to see how disabled people do the things that non-disabled people do, just that they do them differently. We invite pupils to question their perceptions of disability and difference. We shine a positive light on disability and difference. We empower pupils with the ability to change the way society views and treats people who are different.
“We may look or appear different on the outside, but we are all the same on the inside.” Since 2007, we have delivered 1,549 workshops (satisfying the requirements of the PSHE and Citizenship parts of the National Curriculum) and reached 47,000 children, from Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 4. We currently offer: PRIMARY: KEY STAGE 1 & 2 (lasting 30-60 minutes) – Workshops include real-life story-telling, photo-story presentations, practical challenges, personal aids, quizzes and Q&A sessions. SECONDARY: KEY STAGE 3 (lasting 60-90 minutes) – Workshops include real-life story-telling and photo presentations, practical challenges with etiquette awareness and group discussions. SECONDARY: KEY STAGE 4 (lasting 60-90 minutes) – Our disabled presenter will share with the group his or her personal experiences, with particular reference to choosing a career and seeking employment.
