North West School Select is an annual directory of Educational Services available to schools across the North West. It has been produced in response to the growing demand from schools, education departments and local authorities in Cheshire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire for a practical guide to use when looking to expand or augment the national curriculum or to satisfy the requirements of the new Social Disadvantage Subsidy Fund. Inside, you will find many established practitioners, offering hundreds of unique and exciting services to schools. Each of the featured companies work as educators, providing a diverse approach to enhanced, alternative or extended education provision. School Select employs a uniquely informative layout with each page providing a detailed company profile; an overview of that company’s available services; their relevant qualifications; a testimonial and an outline of practical benefits for schools, teachers and pupils. Each page also includes an ‘at a glance’ guide to indicate those providers who specialise in the following areas of education: Disengaged Pupils, Fundraising, Extended Schools Provision, Inset Days, Pre School Children, and SEN. School Select is a valuable addition to your decision making resources when looking to source external educational services. Whether you need cover for existing curriculum commitments or inspiration for new and stimulating ways to add interest, enrichment, diversity and value, School Select has a broad spectrum of professional, experienced providers to fulfil your requirements. School Select has quickly established itself as the primary source of external educational services in the UK, with each regional edition available to view online at www.school-select.com with regular updates and links to practitioners’ own websites. “It was very impressive how the dancers managed to engage the young teenagers.” Elephant Festival, Bournemouth
Shobana Jeyasingh’s choreography is about living today and reflects a society in which cultural identity; technological change and the blurring of traditional boundaries are dominant themes. Jeyasingh’s work provides an opportunity to explore everyday dilemmas through dance. This is work that encourages people to think and engage with the world around them. Her 2007 work Faultline is currently a set work on the AQA GCSE Dance Syllabus and will continue to be so for the next few years. Workshops enable a deeper insight and understanding of the work to be developed in order to benefit students’ GCSE studies and can be tailored to fit your exact requirements and budget. Although on the GCSE Dance syllabus, Faultline not only appeals to GCSE groups, it is also an ideal professional work for ‘A’ level and BTEC students to study and experience. Additional resources are available to support the teaching of Faultline, including a DVD (£30), which acts as a superb teaching aid to add value to lessons. It contains two beautifully filmed versions of the full-length performance. A wide shot allows the full stage action to be seen in totality; while a second edited version provides a detailed, close up look at the choreography. This is available to order directly from the office. A Faultline Resource Pack is available as a free download from www.shobanajeyasingh.co.uk and also a mini documentary ‘Creating Character’ (commissioned by ResCen at Middlesex University) in which the dancers give their views on the creation process for Faultline. An Interactive Student Guide to Faultline is available on CD Rom from ArtsPool (01622 719467) features include: • An overview and structure • Section by section movement analysis • Key motifs to use and development ideas • Ways to use Faultline for the performance element

Zapparelli’s Circus Circus Workshops and Performance
“Danny’s work at the school has really opened the imagination of the children as well as giving them real life experience of plate spinning, walking on stilts, tight rope walking and juggling. This yearly activity is enjoyed by pupils and staff and as a regular visitor, Danny delivers the workshop with a clear explanation of what a circus is, what it includes and excludes, and the skills necessary to be a circus performer. We thoroughly enjoy the workshops, and would most definitely recommend his services.” Geoff Barlow, Head Teacher and Susan Elles, Director of Arts Prestwich Community High School
“Danny’s show is wonderful he is funny daring and very child centred. I would book him every term if I had enough money.” Katherine Samad, Head Teacher, St Johns CE Primary School Bury
Circus Skills Workshops are a great way to have fun while also developing balance with hand eye coordination. Working together children will gain an appreciation of cooperative team work. The children will also benefit from learning new skills, which in turn leads to a growing sense of achievement and self esteem. There is plenty to keep your pupils entertained regardless of their age or abilities. Workshops can be designed to suit any class size or specific requirements and can be adapted for pupils with disabilities. The workshop can also include an interesting session covering the history and development of circus through the ages. Circus Performance – In addition to his workshops Danny can also deliver a versatile circus performance with unicycling, magic, circus skills, comedy and audience participation. The show lasts 45 minutes and climaxes with a daring, spectacular display of juggling on a giraffe unicycle. This is guaranteed to amaze and entertain pupils and teachers alike! This Circus Show can be booked as part of a skills day or as a stand alone production. ‘The Magic Tree’ is our company’s environmental education show. There is magic in the air and a message in the fun. ‘We all love trees’ is the theme song. This is children’s entertainment which will delight them and give a genuine, clear 'green' message that our planet has to be cared for. The hero Roxy Foxy and the Crimson Fairy contrive to save it with the help of the Wizard of course! There are cuddly amusing glove puppet animals; Slippery Snail, Croaky Crow and Cyril Squirrel who pop out of the holes in the tree. The performance involves lots of audience participation.

“I was very impressed with what children of all abilities picked up through the course; all the children got something out of it. I am particularly amazed at what certain children with learning problems have achieved.” “The activities introduced worked well on a cross-curricular level; the children were even storytelling, which is particularly beneficial to their language development.” “The activities could easily be led by staff because it is not necessary for them to play an instrument, unlike other courses.” “If children were to complete this course before starting instrumental tuition they would progress much faster, and be more likely to continue.” “I would like to know how to extend this project into primary school.” “You could adapt any of the activities to integrate with your planning.” “The development of the programme will enable children to have a greater understanding of musical concepts - particularly children who are socially disadvantaged.”
The benefits of the course include, performance confidence, sight reading skills, social awareness, language and reading skills and increased confidence and self-esteem. The course ticks many cross curricular boxes and ties into and exceeds the requirements for Key Stages 1 and 2. It can readily be adapted for most special needs. CPD training courses are available to introduce pre-school and primary practitioners to this unique and successful course. The presentation is lively and bright, capturing the imagination of children as they enter the absorbing world of The Note Family. The course is fun to teach, fun to learn and the unique nature of the course makes it effective for musicians and nonmusicians alike. The course is designed to eliminate the mystery and inaccessibility of reading music and tackles the most sophisticated concepts with simple child-friendly logic. Confidence is built on success and success is assured because, over the development years, areas of potential difficulty have been painstakingly pinpointed and ironed out so that pupils progress smoothly and steadily with maximum fun along the way. The syllabus is taught with stories, songs, rhymes and games expertly designed to impart musical knowledge and skills.

Bubbles Education Resources cover Foundation Stage right the way through to Key Stage 2.
“We like Bubbles Music because it’s differentiated and reinforces the Speaking/Listening & Thinking skills we want to develop in school. The warm-up games are fun. It links in well to the resources we have for music, especially Music Express. Cross-Curricular and Multicultural links are clearly made. You don’t need specialist knowledge to deliver it. “I have recently been using Bubbles Music with Year 1 and, as a non-music specialist, have been surprised at how easy it is to follow. It gives me clear guidance and structure to enable me to teach music lessons effectively, whilst still allowing some autonomy and creativity as part of my themes. By teaching music as part of our themes, the learning journey continues in a relevant context and the children enjoy the lessons more. I would highly recommend buying Bubbles Music, as I now have much more confidence in teaching music.“ Primary teacher, Preston
As well as common Early Years themes, National Curriculum Science, History and Geography coverage is all linked in with the Bubbles resources and to make things even easier, the Bubbles mixture is the same in Music, Dance and Drama, with the same format and clear links to key skills and concepts. All themes have been given titles - they may not match yours exactly, but that isn’t important. What’s in a name after all! It’s what’s covered in each theme that counts. You can either buy individual resource files, or, by purchasing the complete resource set, you can take advantage of the flexible design of Bubbles and will be able to move and reorder themes to fit in with your own primary curriculum. The introduction section within each subject file is designed not only to act as a guide to the resources, but also to help develop knowledge and understanding of Music, Dance and Drama in a simple, uncomplicated format, suitable for both specialist and non-specialist alike. The information is presented in a concise and creative way and can help with developing subject knowledge and increasing confidence. As all the files are supplied with Skills Ladders, you can design a Music, Dance and Drama programme which is suitably differentiated for all your learners. The Skills Ladder organises the skills for Music, Dance and Drama into a progressive order, starting with nursery level skills going right through to Year 7. This ensures there is sufficient challenge for Upper Key Stage Two pupils, as well as providing small incremental steps at pre-school level. 12

Orchard Studios work with groups from High School, College and Universities from across the country providing a range or workshops to help students to gain a further insight into the commercial world of recording. Each session is devised and run by a professional producer at the studios near Crewe. Workshops are designed to build and enhance the skills of students by offering first hand hands on approach to learning. Workshops are ideal activities for any students considering studying Sound Engineering, Music Production or undertaking any music related or media course. Workshops can be tailored to individual groups with specific requirements or interests and can advance practical skills and experience of industry standard equipment or act as a general taster session. Orchard also operate a unique, flexible and risk free fundraising programme which utilises their particular talents and harnesses the creative and performance skills of your school pupils. Their free fundraising initiative works as a whole school project and involves your school recording a music CD in conjunction with Orchard which you can then sell to pupils’ parents. There are no up front fees to pay. Your school simply pays for the CDs which are pre-ordered from parents which effectively guarantees a profit for the school as there are no minimum order values and therefore no risk
14
After an initial consultation with Orchard professionals, pupils rehearse and practice their performance pieces while also designing artwork for the CD cover. A date will be set for the recording session at your school. It is advisable to include as many year groups as possible in the recordings to maximise fundraising potential. Any solo or instrumental pieces can be recorded at the studios for quality purposes if required. Once the recording is complete the ordered CDs are delivered and your school will have generated a sizeable profit from a rewarding, creative and educational experience. If your school can sell 300 copies you will generate £1050 profit for school funds.

Aimed at the 9-13 age range, this pack focuses on the causes of global warming; ways of reducing carbon emissions and ideas to develop a smaller personal carbon footprint.

The tasks and activities support students putting together a portfolio of coursework for specific examinations.
The pack is versatile enough to teach sustainable development either as a curriculum dimension itself or within the subject areas of geography, design and technology, science or citizenship, and uses photographs and local case studies to meet the new national curriculum requirements.
Here to There Pack Written to support young people with specific needs, this pack promotes independence skills in the community using photo cards, transport-related key tasks with accompanying step-bystep list of skills guide.

With Jungle Parc as part of your school activity curriculum you will guarantee your students an experience which incorporates a rewarding mix of mental and physical challenges. The course has a choice of ‘easy’ and ‘difficult’ routes to meet any students’ abilities. Children will enjoy themselves on the course and learn the discipline of their ‘life line system’ enabling them to accept responsibility and adopt basic safety rules that don’t normally exist in other sports. A Jungle Parc activity day incorporates a range of tasks that will develop balance, agility and mental and physical abilities. Jungle Parc allows children to attain new levels of confidence, self reliance and team awareness while experiencing an activity that is exciting, demanding and importantly, great fun. Another advantage of Jungle Parc over many other sporting or physical activities is its universal attraction among pupils. There is something about the unique nature of climbing among the tree canopy that is exciting and particularly alluring to children, whether sporty or academic and because courses are graded and non competitive, children of all abilities can enjoy and excel. Even children who normally opt out of sport or are afraid of heights will surprise themselves and everyone else by becoming the most enthusiastic once on the activity course. With 10 years experience of building and managing sites across Europe they have an exemplary safety record. All courses are certified under CERES The European Company for safety checks on ‘self belay’ high wire adventure activities. John writes non-fiction books for children. They are in every school and library in the UK, and have been translated into many foreign editions. John is an experienced and popular visitor to schools. His visits are very different from those of fiction authors, storytellers, and poets.
John offers a variety of sessions for children of all ages and abilities. They include: • R and Y1: Reading – picture-book fiction; storyboard recount.
Creative Arts and Literature
John Malam Children’s Non-Fiction Author
• Y1 and Y2: Reading – biography; biography recount; biography workshop. • Y3 to Y6: Talk – Journey of a Non-Fiction Book, from first idea to printed page. Who does what, when, how, and why. • Y5 to Y9: Workshop – Non-Fiction Book-Making in which children carry out the roles of key people in the publishing process to create their own non-fiction books.
What teachers say: “There was lots of excitement researching John’s books before his visit since we had never invited a non-fiction author before. The visit was very successful, with the children learning a great deal about how non-fiction books are created. The Non-Fiction Book-Making workshop was very effective and the children continued with this work after the visit to produce work for a super display. I would thoroughly recommend John to other schools.” Claire Weymouth, Headteacher, St Wilfrid’s CofE Primary School, Lancaster
“John motivated and challenged our children. His Journey of a Non-Fiction Book talk was informative, well-resourced and of the highest quality. During the Non-Fiction BookMaking workshop the children were enthralled as they acted out the roles of the publishing process to create their own non-fiction books. He provided a high interest, informative and inspiring day. I would have no hesitation in recommending him to other schools. In fact, we have already booked him again for next year!” Leanne Cox, Literacy Leader, Shevington Community Primary School, Wigan
“The Non-Fiction Book-Making workshops John delivers are challenging and engaging. The carefully designed, differentiated tasks encourage team work, research skills and time management as well as improving children’s literacy. John works well with children of all abilities and encourages them to be creative and take pride in their final product. We have used some of John’s ideas in our English and ICT curriculum, and intend to continue working with him on similar projects. I would recommend John to other schools.” Steven Taylor, Director of Literacy, Accrington Academy

Arty Pants Creative Art Workshops Arty Pants are passionate about art and promoting participation in art and crafts. Their mission is to make extra curricular art and craft activities easily accessible to all children and young people in Merseyside, regardless of ability and social background. They seek to achieve this by providing a mix of Holiday Clubs, After School Clubs, School Workshops, Consultation days, Community Art Work, Fun days and parties.
“Arty Pants were well organised and equipped and our staff were delighted at how smoothly everything went. The children were excited and enthusiastic and most important of all they were very pleased with their results. Excellent value for money - we could confidently leave the team to set up, run the class efficiently and clear away afterwards.” St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School, Netherton
Arty Pants currently hold five after school art classes in various community settings across Merseyside. They engage up to fifteen children at each session, with a minimum of two experienced artists and teachers supervising. Each supervisor is a qualified first aider and has health and safety training, enhanced CRB checks, and NSPCC safeguarding children. Three local schools currently use Arty Pants to run their after school and lunch clubs. Arty Pants are supported by extended schools both in Sefton and Liverpool, and have been participating in Liverpool’s ‘work, rest & play’ activity days using art as a vehicle to promote healthy eating and life styles. They also work with St Helens council to provide diversionary activities with local children in the holidays. A community consultation projects was also completed in conjunction with Sefton Extended schools where they produced together with the parents a large piece of Art work reflecting the views and idea of local parents. Arty Pants also specialise in workshops with cared for children working in small groups carrying out small calming creative work. In Sefton, Arty Pants target ‘hard to reach’ families, with the help of local Schools and this has resulted in additional children attending after school and holiday clubs. Wherever possible they source external funding to support activities enabling art to be inclusive to all children. Over the last 18 months, they have introduced new experiences to children and young people who attended Workshops, working with a range of materials from modroc to clay and have experimented with a variety of art techniques from screen printing to Aboriginal style painting. Arty Pants specialise in holiday clubs, after school clubs in schools and other community venues, pre school work in nurseries and children centres, projects with local youth clubs and school fun days and parties. They also carry out community consultation work, using art as a creative vehicle to capture pictorial notes.
32
Arty Pants provide all of the equipment and materials required for each project or workshop; asking the school to provide a suitable space, preferably with a wipe clean floor and easy access to a sink. They are looking to provide a long term solution to the shortage of extra curricular art and craft activities available to children. They hope to be able to build relationships with more schools and children while passing on skills, knowledge and enthusiasm for art.

Wild Workshops is a venture started by a science subject leader with a passion for nature. Sessions bring local garden animals (and lots of equipment) into the classroom for a truly hands-on practical experience. These vibrant sessions boost pupils’ learning and encourage investigation with some spectacular audio-visual aids. Have you ever seen a 3 foot woodlouse or heard a mouse’s ultrasonic ‘squeak’?
“Fantastic! One of the best sessions I have ever seen in 34 years of teaching. The children were enthralled.”

Wild Workshops Cross Curricular Classroom Creatures
Marilyn Friend, Teacher, Legh Vale Primary, St. Helens
“The children loved it! They were given the confidence to interact with the animals. The sessions were excellent and differentiated from class to class. Children and teachers learned a lot!” June Amison, Key Stage 1 Co-ordinator, Ince Saint Mary’s Primary, Wigan
Wild Workshops focuses on the essence of science – finding out about our world. A Wild Workshops day is about stimulating children’s innate curiosity, not filling in worksheets or memorising facts. From Nursery to Year 8, children love discovering, first hand, the behaviours of everyday animals with unusual habits. Differentiated investigations can reinforce work on Habitats, Food chains, Plants or Adaptations and will usually involve snails, mice, woodlice, brine shrimp as well as other seasonal guests. Wild Workshops help children to understand the wildlife that lives all around them. Allowing the children to work in small groups with live animals empowers them and they become motivated to develop their own investigative skills. Can a mouse learn the correct route through a maze? Why do some creatures look for light and some shy away? These sessions can be used to enhance any ‘natural world’ class topic such as: Similarities and differences among living things, Plants and animals in the local environment, Variation, Moving and growing, Habitats and Life cycles. A real must for Science week! Through careful liaison and consultation Wild Workshops can create the perfect day for your school and your timetable. They offer a flexible approach to workshops and can cater for all needs whether you require in-depth investigations, general nature sessions or taster sessions for each class. Wild Workshops will bring an array of animals to aid the learning experience! Their workshop leader is a fully qualified primary teacher with an MSc in Animal Behaviour and an infectious and energetic approach to science and nature.

Merseytravel & Climatlantic The River Mersey Eco-Cruise Merseytravel and Climatlantic are looking to develop educational eco-cruises focusing on the coastline of the River Mersey. The cruise could take in the wildlife at Hilbre Island, ‘Another Place’ – the Iron Men by Anthony Gormley at Crosby Beach as well as breezing by the Wind Farm sited along Liverpool Bay and many more coastal beauty spots.
The river Mersey is the focal point of the city region and is itself one of the biggest indicators of the environmental improvements that have been undertaken over the past 30 years. As such it is fitting it should now provide the backdrop for the environmental education of future generations of North West school pupils. Climatlantic develop strategies at regional and local level towards the reduction of the carbon footprint in the European Atlantic Area. Their projects focus in four essential issues: mobility, energy, territorial management and social behaviour; developing concrete strategies to be validated through pilot actions. As a final product, partners will create a common strategy for the Atlantic Area, based on these thematic strategies. Their unique intervention in conjunction with the practical use of the world famous Mersey Ferries and the iconic river Mersey will create a memorable educational experience that will aim to reinforce many aspects of environmental education. First hand experiences like these can help children and students gain a better understanding of the effects the environment can have, not only on us, but the landscape around us and all who inhabit it. To make sure these trips provide a valuable addition to the curriculum, input from teachers is essential. This is a rare opportunity to create a unique and valuable educational resource for local communities and the wider region. All local schools and teachers who would like to participate in one of the project focus groups are invited to contact Chris Murphy at Merseytravel by telephone on 0151 330 1313 or by email at chris.murphy@merseytravel.gov.uk.

( the site is used to deliver Land and Environment courses at GCSE level) This team consist of a specialist secondary teacher of Technology (Food), ICT and Land and Environment and a local primary teacher, along with support from FACE, LEBP and RSPB etc. They can now offer a tailor made visit for every individual school, each visit being free of charge due to support from Natural England. They can focus on food and farming in a number of ways including from field to fork; how the countryside has changed over the years or take a detailed look at habitats, as an RSPB wetland bird hotspot. The extensive garden gives pupils the opportunity to look at plants in a variety of situations, from the raised vegetable plots, wildlife garden, sensory garden to name a few. However the stars of the show are the animals, who both children and adults like to get up close to. There is a strong policy on conservation and the environment at Cobble Hey. The land is a haven for wildlife and through links with the RSPB preservation projects have been flourishing. Habitats of lapwings, curlews, oyster catchers and red shanks on the farmland are protected and monitored, in an attempt to enhance the populations of these farmland birds. For further insight they have created a lapwing walk which makes use of the new bird hide and can be accessed by all, due to our tramper. This allows visitors to view these spectacular birds in their natural environment, while enjoying some breathtaking views over the Forest of Bowland. As educators we have a strong belief that we should ensure that your visit is as safe and educational sound as possible. Our aim is to bring to life topics which you have to cover in the curriculum, by students experiencing first hand that ability to “Get closer to Nature. So with a pre-visit a tailor made visit is organised free of charge.

Helen Clare Science, Learning, Creativity Helen is a poet straying into Science Territory, a Science teacher gone to The Other Side, an educator, facilitator and creative agitator. She offers one-off experiences and projects which combine STEM subjects with Creative Writing and other Arts based approaches to encourage imaginative, creative and inventive thinking and to consider the social and ethical implications of STEM subjects.
“Wow! I’ve been trying some of the things we did at the workshop – and it’s been fab! We made machines with a potentially difficult Year 9 class I have never taught until today and the machines were amazing. Better than ours even!” Teacher feedback
Helen’s works have included a residency at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester, Passing Down, a collaboration with academics, the community and an artist to create a piece of word based textile art responding to people’s ideas about inheritance, and work on the Leonardo Project – a NESTA funded project to explore teaching and art synchronously. Working with Helen, children have sent Maths poetry up in Helium balloons, created robots with poetic hearts, and racetrack board games to explore forces and friction. Teachers have created quasi-perpetual motion machines and life support systems for Numbskulls. Helen’s next project is to work with scientists, chefs and young people to consider the future of production and distribution and to create stories and dishes made out of ingredients that don’t yet exist. Helen works with teachers to reconnect them to their creativity, to consider their own learning and to devise new learning approaches and materials. She offers CPD sessions to develop Creative STEM teaching and also to introduce techniques for teaching science and poetry together. She also writes learning materials for poetry and STEM. Helen offers bespoke services for single sessions or for longer projects. Learning experiences will be designed based on curricular requirements and the learning styles and interests of the children – and the teacher! If necessary she can even arrange for other artistic or STEM practitioners to work alongside her. She also offers the following off-the-peg workshops: Poetry Bugs – Using a series of Helen’s own poems about insects and a collection of toys and puppets, this workshops teaches children about ecosystems, life cycles, adaptations as well as poetry forms and also frequently result in the children contemplating issues within their own lives. Textperiment – These workshops which can fit in with any experiment, use similes and metaphors to explore the imagery and the concepts behind experiments and to communicate about them in novel ways.
44
Poetry Revision – These sessions (which are also available as teacher CPD sessions) look at the different ways poetry can be used to help pupils remember key facts and concepts.

Architecture Workshops Making Learning Fun The Architecture Workshops Association are a small not-for-profit educational organisation, working throughout the UK in Schools, Colleges and Universities. Their Reception to Sixth form Architecture Workshops have been making learning fun since 1996. Designed for all Key Stages, these unique handson experiences of integrated curricular activities bring together the six strands of the national curriculum's Pupil Learning & Thinking Skills Framework. “We were impressed at how the pupils were given an opportunity to apply various skills in the workshop and were delighted at how much fun they were clearly having. The staff were highly impressed with the quality of the experience and the way the session was run. They have already requested a return visit and we will certainly recommend you to other schools.” Lindsay Fry, Deputy Headteacher, Corsham Primary Sch. Wiltshire
The workshops engage pupils in 3d visual problem solving, both individually and as a team, using a mix of higher order and creative thinking strategies. Workshops are adapted to suit pupils abilities, enabling G&T students and SEN students to have the same workshops experience. Increasingly used for extension/ enrichment, PSHCE and citizenship activities for KS3, 4 & 5. The workshops engage students in fun activity whilst helping them develop as Creative Thinkers, Effective Participants, Independent Enquirers, Self Managers and Team Workers, through a combination of individual and group work, design problem solving and creativity. Underlying the requirements for communication, cooperative skills, logistical reasoning, critical evaluation and self reflection. The Workshops are split into two categories: ‘Build-It’: Focused Practical Tasks, using design technology, maths, literacy, science, history and drama to differing degrees pupils create large scale reconstructions of famous architectural landmarks, i.e: Egyptian Pyramids; Greco-Roman Temple; Tudor Globe Theatre; Victorian Crystal Palace. ‘Kre8’ workshops stimulate pupil’s imagination, interpretative and visual problem solving skills helping to develop higher order thinking strategies. Focusing on investigation, Disassembly and Evaluation as Design and Make assignments. Working in teams, pupils use DT skills, Maths and Science to design and build large scale structures i.e: Bridges; Shelters; Olympic Sculptures; Skyscrapers. Kre8 workshops at KS 3 &4 are often run as year group or inter-school competitions by our regular clients. Key Stage 1 (inc. reception) – Using number, counting, shape and space pupils work together to build simple modular forms, which go on to form the basic parts of most KS2 workshops. Secondary design course – Developed to help spatial awareness and visualisation skills of older students considering further study in architecture and design. . The spatial interventions of 3D art and architecture are explored through precedent study with the students developing their ideas further as abstract art and architecture; introducing site and locality. Students consider environmental impact of their designs in relation to existing urban developments and green field sites.

It’s All Chinese Mandarin Language Teaching & Chinese Culture Days Qualified teacher Charlotte Foster delivers Chinese lessons and workshops to schools all over the North West. As passionate about Chinese as she is about teaching, Charlotte runs lively and colourful Chinese Language and Culture Days for classes and whole schools. In addition, she offers structured Mandarin language courses tailor-made for young learners, which work equally well as timetabled classes, PPA cover, or as an exciting option for an after-school, before-school or lunchtime club. “The Chinese Language and Culture Day was so much fun – all the teachers were impressed by you and the children even more so! We would love to book you again for next year!” Sue Gledhill, St Francis CE Primary School, Blackburn “Fantastic! Could not have been better! The workshop was fascinating and extremely well-presented, and you made the learning really accessible.” Teacher, INSET workshop “The children were completely captivated by your boundless energy and enthusiasm... I would highly recommend you to any school wishing to enhance their cultural curriculum.” Sian Hodgson, Longford Park School, Trafford
Progressive schools in the North West have already begun to introduce Chinese studies into their curricular and extra-curricular timetables, motivated by the growing need for our young global citizens to have an understanding of East Asian languages and cultures. It’s All Chinese was developed in response to the demand for engaging language classes and workshops led by experienced classroom managers with an appreciation of the needs of young language learners. Chinese Language and Culture Days These fun, practical 'taster' workshops are great for whole primary schools over 1 or 2 days (30-60 minute workshops for each class), as an immersion day for one group, or split into weekly sessions over a half term. Flexible and differentiated, they are adapted to your timetable, class sizes, and the ages and needs of your children. A typical ‘China Day’ might include: • A colourful whole school assembly to introduce the people, culture and geography of China • Spoken Chinese – conversation, songs and games • Written Chinese – calligraphy and art/craft activities • Tasting Chinese food and using chopsticks • Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy • A range of traditional clothing for children to try on Mandarin Language Classes It’s All Chinese also offers a range of short- and long-term Chinese language courses: as part of the Primary Languages curriculum, as an extended schools provision, or as a structured topic over a half or full term. Chinese is very musical, making it an incredibly fun and surprisingly easy language for young children to grasp. The new script also gives students who struggle with alphabetic styles the opportunity to excel in, and enjoy, a form of written communication. The It’s All Chinese teaching style is practical, interactive and inclusive. Employing visual, auditory and kinaesthetic methods in teaching and learning ensures all children are engaged in the enjoyment of language acquisition.

Cherry Chung is an experienced willow artist undertaking workshops and projects both classroom based and within school grounds. Willow weaving techniques are used to create sculptures ranging from parade lanterns, mobiles and giant insects, to outdoor play structures such as living fences and dens, with the emphasis on the artform as a living learning tool.
The Built Environment
Cherry Chung Willow Weaving Bend Your Imagination!
“The children were extremely focused and calm, the workshops were informative, and over several sessions the group gained new skills, and each pupil made a basket for school.” Matthew Sullivan, Peel Hall Primary School
Cherry Chung works with basketry and living willow withies to make structures and sculptures. Willow and the varied ways it can be worked, lends itself to the creation of a wide diversity of forms, from baskets to figurative or abstract decorative screens and sculptures, as well as functional living art like seating and shelters. The shape and feel of woven willow is very organic and it is a sustainable resource, being coppiced yearly. This makes it an environmentally friendly material which satisfies the requirements of Sustainable/Eco schools status and enhances your school’s green credentials. Projects can be as simple or as complex as the imagination allows, and a living, growing sculpture gives the added dimensions of seasonal changes in colour and form; a demonstration of growth cycles, and a potential harvest for future projects. Cherry particularly enjoys making sculptures that convey an element of surprise in their size, for example 3 foot long ants, 6 foot dragonflies, or an octopus straddling a school playground. Living willow structures are naturally sinuous and curved, and provide a soft and organic form of landscaping. To be able to create a basket or sculpture from a pile of sticks using little more than your hands, is an experience that many people, adults and children alike, find to be deeply satisfying, and therapeutic. As an established and respected artist Cherry has worked extensively, across the North West for the past decade. Many of the willow sculptures she has produced have been in collaboration with groups, including schools; youth projects; residents’ associations; and other community groups as well as with the general public. Within schools, the development of a willow sculpture project can be cross curricular, encompassing maths, art and design, biology, and history. Tailored willow weaving workshops give pupils the chance to learn hands on traditional basketry techniques; design and make indoor sculpture, such as play dens, screens, calm spaces, and lanterns, or extend the art form into the outdoors, and build living willow structures such as tunnels, dens and fences. Living structures have the added interest of a form which changes throughout the seasons, and which can be harvested for its new growth in the winter.

Llangollen Wharf is one of the major attractions in the North Wales market town of Llangollen. From the Wharf you can embark on either a horse drawn boat trip along the feeder for the main canal, or a motorised aqueduct cruise which will take your party across the famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.
Heritage and Cultures
Llangollen Wharf Horse Drawn Canal Boat Trips
Built by Thomas Telford between 1795 and 1805 the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is the country’s biggest navigable aqueduct towering a massive 126ft above the River Dee, supported on 18 stone piers and listed as a world heritage site. Both trips take in the magical sights and sounds of the beautiful Llangollen Canal and are suitable for all Keystages supporting National Curriculum subjects including history, geography, science, business studies - tourism and leisure. Visitors have enjoyed trips from the Wharf for 100 years and the experience is like stepping back in time. There are three different boats trips available from the Wharf: 45 minute Horse Drawn Boat Trip – leaves the Wharf westwards for 1 mile before the horse changes ends and brings the boat back. This length of canal is not used by motor boats so the water is crystal clear and there are often fish to be seen. The boat passes the Royal International Pavilion and under 2 bridges before running alongside the steam railway. This trip is suitable for all ages and can run any time between 10.00am and 3.00pm by arrangement. 2 hour Horse Drawn Boat Trip – goes in the same direction but continues along the Dee valley passing under 2 more bridges and crossing a small aqueduct before arriving at the Chain Bridge Hotel. A scheduled stop here allows you to admire the chain bridge across the River Dee, and marvel at the manmade Horseshoe Falls, created by Thomas Telford. This is the most beautiful stretch of canal and the horse drawn trip is the perfect way to see it. This trip can run at any time between 10.00am and 2.00pm by arrangement but is not suitable for very young children. 2 hour Aqueduct Trip – is a motor boat cruise on the "Thomas Telford" and goes in the opposite direction to the Horse Drawn Boat Trips. A live commentary from your skipper gives you the history, local knowledge and up to date gossip along the way. The journey finishes over the famous and thrilling Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, built by Telford in 1805 and unsurpassed in its simplicity and engineering achievement. The trip is one way so your transport will drop you off at one end and pick you up at the other. The boats are All Weather and the Horse Boats are wheelchair friendly. There are information and activity packs available to complement all school trips. Prices start from just £3.00 per pupil with one adult place free with ten students.

Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Experience What was it like during World War II? How did it feel to be a British Citizen? What did people eat and wear? Winston Churchill’s Britain at War Museum answers these questions and more. It recreates the London Blitz with special effects highlighting the sights, the sounds, the artefacts, and even the dust, smoke and smell of an air raid at its height.
“Spot on for National curriculum for all age groups – quite amazing!” Dr. Anthony Freeman, Government, History Advisor
“I thought I was back in the war, it was unbelievable. All children should visit this nostalgic and moving experience to see what it was really like for the ordinary people during World War 2.” Dame Vera Lynn
The museum has an astonishing collection of evocative photographs and an enormous number of actual relics. Everything from toilet rolls and soap to an Anderson shelter, you can sit in and hear air raids overhead. There are shops displaying what was available for purchase during the war years and a feature devoted to Winston Churchill. The education packs available for primary schools include activity sheets intended to support National History Curriculum Key Stage 2 Core Study Unit 4 - Britain Since 1930. The particular emphasis is on the experience and impact of the Second World War in Britain and covers topics including: Sheltering in the Underground, Gas Masks, Anderson Shelters Rationing, Fighting Fires, Evacuation, and The Blackout. For secondary schools activity sheets are linked with the main themes of ‘Britain at War Experience’ and form part of the study programme for the History National Curriculum key stage 3, Core Study unit 5 - The era of the Second World War with particular emphasis on the experience and impact of war, and the home front in Britain. There are four titles: ‘Air Raid precautions’ ‘Andersons and the Underground’ ‘Women in Wartime’ and ‘The Blitz’. Each unit includes an introduction to the area of study and acts as a stimulus to further enquiry. The suggested activities are of varying levels of difficulty and may be used for individual work or group discussion. They invite pupils to develop their understanding of the Second World War, to think about the experiences that are recreated in the Supplement and to explore their own attitudes and reactions.
52
The museum allows pupils to use a range of historical Artefacts, Documents, Posters, Printed Resources, Pictures and photographs, Film Music and Sound Recordings. Tasks have been designed with National Curriculum Attainment Targets in mind, but are not connected to specific targets or levels, as these will vary according to the age and ability of each group.

Eye witness testimony from Holocaust survivors is the most powerful tool in raising awareness of the dangers of prejudice and racism. London Jewish Cultural Centre’s survivor speakers’ programme enables thousands of school children each year to hear and learn from these compelling stories of human endurance and man’s capacity to ill-treat his fellow man.
Heritage and Cultures
Holocaust Survivor Stories London Jewish Cultural Centre
“Students were unanimous in the verdict that this was the most important historical experience they had ever had.” Vandean School, Kent “Without the visit the Holocaust would just seem like another history topic. It gave a reality to the subject which it is impossible to convey through textbooks.” La Sainte Union School, London
“Your story touched me in so many ways that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.” Arnita Manandhar, Year 11, Preston Manor High School
In 1994 Holocaust studies became a compulsory part of the school curriculum. This led the Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department of the London Jewish Cultural Centre to formalise its visiting speaker programme, formerly run on an ad hoc basis. Over the past 17 years the programme has gone from strength to strength, reaching out to schools throughout the country. In 2008/9 alone, Holocaust survivors gave direct testimony to over 15,000 students. Some 60 Holocaust survivors, not all of whom are Jewish, act as school speakers for us. They have endured a range of Holocaust experiences – kindertransport, the ghettos, hidden children, false passports, slave labour, camps. All speakers are people with direct experience of the Holocaust. They have been helped in the presentation of their story and in dealing with questions from both pupils and teachers. The LJCC Holocaust and Anti-Racism Department makes all the arrangements. Supported by a marvellous team of volunteer drivers, the department liaises with the schools, and requests feedback from students and teachers. Speakers give their time voluntarily, but all their travel expenses are met. Some are able to talk more frequently than others; how often they talk, and where, is entirely at each individual’s discretion. Mindful of the survivors increasing age and frailty, an LJCC Legacy initiative has been launched to enable future generations to keep these testimonies alive, using recorded survivor tapes, personal reminiscences, photos, maps and other memorabilia. Meanwhile, if you have not heard a survivor speak, try to do so. The impact of direct testimony cannot be overestimated.

A Quiet Place Development of Emotional Intelligence A Quiet Place is a room, but it’s not just a room …they design and install multi sensory therapeutic healing environments, and now offer 2 ‘stand alone’ evidence based, personal development programmes from their curriculum – Self Management and Peer Massage. Complementary and leading edge techniques are combined to empower young people and bring about positive change. Your staff are trained on site to deliver one or both of these ground-breaking programmes to your pupils.
What is A Quiet Place…?
Monitoring each result…
A Quiet Place is emotional intelligence in action. It is scientifically proven to aid the development of children with positive self esteem, behaviour management, positive learning and school transition whilst helping to develop personal choice and interaction with peers and family.
The outcomes are extremely powerful and can be monitored throughout the journey with A Quiet Place workbooks and the bio feedback programmes.
• A Quiet Place Self Management Programme During 1 or 2 action learning workshops your staff are taught to manage their own physiology using simple techniques and computer biofeedback software. They in turn teach their pupils to recognise emotional triggers and then to manage their feelings appropriately. The result? “If I hadn’t done my breathing then I’d have smacked you one” (boy overheard speaking to another boy in the playground).
Each school receives a full report that includes quantitative and qualitative information on the impact of A Quiet Place within the organisation and including the effect on students, staff and families.
• A Quiet Place Peer Massage AQP senior practitioner trains your staff in a series of fun, action learning workshops delivered to your pupils in their classrooms. The result? “the children are much kinder to each other” and your staff and pupils can continue using and honing their new skills long after the sessions are completed. • A Quiet Place Environment A beautiful, therapeutic and healing environment… Each unique A Quiet Place environment can be designed within a specified room, corridor, reception or designated sanctuary area. Taken from a detailed analysis of needs and requirements, each space is individually designed and tailored to deliver a multisensory healing space, which can include specialised resources to deliver the extended emotional intelligence curriculum. Within the room, the support programmes and timetabled activities aim to reduce immediate stress within the environment, produce more successful communication and develop relationships at every level. • A Quiet Place Emotional Intelligence Curriculum (only available with the Environment) People who are feeling good about themselves are both eager to learn and more likely to improve their attainment. AQP has created an Emotional Intelligence Curriculum which is a carefully crafted, scripted programme that helps a person develop all elements of Emotional Intelligence by harnessing the imagination through strategies such as visualisation and story telling. “It was wonderful to see the children managing their own emotions and actually taking responsibility for their own behaviour. Taking all of this into the classrooms means our children are ready to learn and that is the most important thing in education.” Linda Bardsley, St Peter’s Primary School

This benefits pupils’ health and underlines your school’s commitment to the pupil’s wellbeing under the ‘Every Child Matters’ umbrella. Our sessions are genuine hands on cooking experience and will allow your children to prepare and taste at least 3 or 4 hot and cold dishes during any of our presentations. Each session lasts 1 hour 10 minutes and our sessions and topics are many and varied but include: The Greeks – taking pupils on a gastronomic tour of Greece exploring the climate, inventions and agriculture whilst preparing a fantastic Greek Meze. Pizza Fun – making their own healthy pizza, incorporating 5 a day fun and the science of yeast not to mention using the fantastic local Walk Mill flour. The Sandwich – The history of the sandwich is explored whilst preparing a hot healthy sandwich including making their bread and preparing a sweet, drink and a mega sausage. This links in very well with DT. India – gives pupils the food knowledge and cultural insight to this fabulous country. Still maintains links to healthy eating, science, environment and fair-trade. Africa – have fun making your own African bread as well as exploring food from Morocco, Mozambique, Cameroon and South Africa. World War ll – an in-depth look at what it was like during the war, how healthy did they eat during the war, what would their rations have been like whilst preparing a complete meal. Italian Bolognese/Butchers versus the Supermarkets (Secondary) – A quick and inspiring session to allow the children to design their own breads and flavours, make a delicious Bolognese packed full of hidden vegetables and see why butchers meat is best.

Classroom Medics Health, Science & Sport Workshops Classroom Medics workshops are delivered at your school and have been designed to engage pupils in the curriculum and enable them to make more informed decisions about their health, career aspirations and life choices. Their workshops cover science, health and sports aspects of the curriculum and present them in a fun and engaging manner as well as providing an insight into career opportunities.
“The pupils were focused and engaged. It gave them the opportunity to explore the body, it's functions and apply that knowledge to interpret their own readouts which will give them the edge in understanding human physiology.” Mrs Farley, Deputy Head, Kesteven & Grantham Girls' School
Their patient simulator, Stan, is used in the Classroom Casualty and the Drug & Knife Awareness workshops. He is a living & breathing medical manikin with a heart beat, pulse, sweat, blink & speach. His vital signs are monitored and during the workshop, he is given a range of drugs and is stabbed (electronically). The effects of these are clearly demonstrated as Stan is pushed towards death. Only your students can save him by making the right decisions in the workshop! It is hoped the experience will help young people have the courage and knowledge to make the right decisions if faced with a situation involving drugs or knives. The Careers in Health workshop brings the health sector to your classroom, so students (and teachers!) are able to try their hand at some of the skills used in this sector and assess the many career paths available. Activities include how to take a set of medical observations, how to take blood from an injection simulator and how to move a patient using a hoist. Health & Fitness MOT is a great way for your pupils to explore how their body can be affected with poor lifestyle choices. The most popular activity is the ageing photography, where pupils can see what they will look like at the age of 72 with the effects of smoking, UV sunlight and obesity added in.

Small Steps to Success Motivational Workshops Small Steps to Success believes that children can aspire to be anything they want to be in life with hard work, determination and above all true belief in their abilities. They provide quality workshops for children that will inspire and motivate them to develop a more positive attitude to life and learning, in a bid to make their lives and futures better. They teach children simple positive psychology techniques which they can use throughout their lives and our workshops help children understand the psychology of achievement. Katie Small set up Small Steps to Success to provide children with the inspiration, motivation and encouragement to achieve success in their lives. Research has shown that motivating children at an early age is the best way of having a long lasting effect on the rest of their lives. Schools are the best place to reach all children and help them to make their lives better and to take responsibility for their futures. Katie began her teaching career in a deprived area of Liverpool where she recognised the talent and potential many children have, regardless of their backgrounds. Her passion for positive thinking and teaching has been life long and she has studied the topic for many years. She couldn’t understand why motivational speaking only existed for adults and believed that it could also benefit children and that having more positive children in the world will have positive results for schools, teachers, parents and society.
• Motivating children to believe in themselves and their abilities. • Raise children's aspirations, hopes and dreams so they aim for more out of life. • Teaching children how the power of positive thinking can encourage success. • Building children's confidence and self-esteem. • Encouraging young people to take responsibility for their own lives.
Many children live in negative environments which are detrimental to their personal development. Negativity breeds negativity but the same works in reverse in that positivity breeds positivity so Small Steps works to make children more positive and to help them believe in a bright, happy and successful future for themselves. Small Steps works in conjunction with a number of Government Initiatives that seek to provide young people with a sense of purpose, personal resilience and emotional stability. They deliver six age specific workshops which are designed for schools but can also be delivered to any youth group or organisation. Year 6 Workshop (Primary) - Small Step, Giant Leap Helping children cope with the transition process, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 7 Workshop - First Class Helping children cope with their 1st year at high school, and working specifically to improve self esteem and confidence. Year 9 Workshop - Your Life, Your Choice, Your Future Choosing options, helping children make the right decisions. Year 11 Workshop - Recipe for Success Helping children prepare for their exams and to motivate them to achieve more than they thought possible. Year 12/13 Workshops - The World Is Your Oyster Encouraging young adults to see what the world has to offer them and to seize their opportunities. Anti-Bullying Workshop - No Victims, Just Survivors Based on a true story and giving children an insight into what it is like to be bullied and the effect this can have. Suitable for year 5 and above. Small Steps to Success's key aims include:
