Learning Outside the Classroom At its simplest, Learning Outside the Classroom involves young people moving outside their immediate and accustomed environment to learn from first-hand experiences. Wherever young people learn, from the ages of 0 to 19, learning outside the classroom has a part to play as an integral element in that learning.
Photograph courtesy of Martin Mere Wetland Centre - see page 64
All young people should experience learning outside the classroom and its benefits as a central aspect of the learning experience, the curriculum and the courses they are engaged with. By stepping outside the classroom the opportunity exists to transform learning and raise achievement. Learning Outside the Classroom allows participants to learn in context, to learn by practical engagement, and to learn by personal discovery. Students can master new skills, work collaboratively with others and develop a better sense of themselves and their potential. There really is no limit to where Learning Outside the Classroom can take place. Give it a try!
In school grounds Habitats (e.g. a school playing field, hedge, meadow or pond), school garden or growing area, outdoor classroom, storytelling area, adventure play equipment and climbing/traversing walls, woodland.
Outside school Park or woodland, high street, city farm, community garden or allotment, garden centre, library, historic and contemporary buildings, arts venues. Botanic parks and gardens, country parks, places of worship, museums and heritage sites, theatre, adventure activity centres, nature reserves, science and discovery centres, zoos and aquaria. The aim is not only to make clear that learning outside the classroom has significant learning benefits for participants but also to explore how it can be successfully delivered so that more young people develop their knowledge, understanding and skills beyond the classroom walls. Read about the Learning Outside The Classroom Quality Badge over the page.
Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto Since its launch in November 2006, more than 1588 organisations and individuals have signed up in support of the Manifesto for Learning Outside the Classroom vision and aims. The Manifesto leaflet explains more about the aims of Learning Outside the Classroom, along with some examples of good practice, and is available to downloaded for free at their website at www.lotc.org.uk.

Learning opportunities down on the farm Farms are as varied as the food we eat and provide opportunities for learning both in a formal context and by enhancing the social and emotional aspects of development. They may focus on livestock or arable production, or a combination, and be self-contained units or part of huge estates. There are a number that have developed as community and city farms which may be working farms, or smaller organisations that form a part of a community which can be visited by schools. Every aspect of a farm visit gives opportunities for direct and indirect learning, by experiencing the unique sights, sounds and smells. A farm visit gives young people the opportunity to understand where the food we eat comes from, and an understanding of how food production affects the countryside. Farms offer many unique learning opportunities, from the power of simple first-hand experiences, such as witnessing the birth of a lamb in spring or walking through a field of wheat which stretches to the horizon, to getting to grips with microbes in action in a dairy as milk turns into cheese or getting a glimpse into the many varied careers involved in keeping the countryside flourishing. A farm visit might focus on: ‘from field to plate’ — the journey made in the production of one food item such as milk, wheat or potatoes the impact on the landscape of farming operations the people and the diversity of farming careers — farm technology farming methods, perhaps comparing organic with conventional farming the natural environment geography and map work
Learning support Many farms provide learning materials they have produced to support your visit wether in the form of worksheets or activities to be carried out during the visit or on return to the classroom. Farming and Countryside Education (FACE) offers access to resources through its website and its network of regional education coordinators. It also provides signposts to many different organisations who offer support both in terms of resources to support your visit and other possible visits by people to the school or setting. FACE aim to educate children and young people about food and farming in a sustainable countryside. There is widespread concern about the way children, young people, and their families, have become disassociated from where their food comes from and don’t know what is required for a healthy diet and lifestyle. They are also unaware of the many opportunities in the countryside for leisure and social activities, and for employment. FACE aims to meet these educational needs by working with their members and partners to promote visits to farms, and to provide easy access to a wide range of high-quality educational resources and activities to complement both schoolbased studies and outdoor visits. 6
Their work with schools and young people is highly successful because of the immediate and widespread benefits of visits to the
outdoors, and of using food, farming and the countryside to support many aspects of the curriculum and by doing so they aim to:• stimulate interest and excitement;• link to all aspects and stages of the school curriculum;• allow pupils to see rural activities such as food production first-hand;• introduce pupils to a host of leisure activities in the countryside;• introduce pupils to rural career opportunities and the world of work. FACE works with pupils and teachers and provides a one-stop enquiry service, curriculum resources, Regional Education Coordinators, links with farmers and the rural industries and training for teachers. They also provide workshops for farmers and seminars, support and advice, alongside an accreditation system for countryside visits while also forging links between schools and farms. For more details of how your school can maximise the learning potential of the countryside or how FACE can assist with your school’s farm visits see the website www.face-online.org.uk.
The Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge The new Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge is now live. The Badge will be awarded to providers who have pledged to engage in an ongoing process to sustain highquality learning outside the classroom and who have demonstrated that they meet six quality indicators: Have a process in place to assist users to plan the learning experience effectively Provide accurate information about its offer Provides activities, experience or resources which meet learner needs Review the experience and act on feedback Meet the needs of the users Have safety management processes in place to manage risk effectively
As part of their educational resource provision, Merseytravel are producing a pack called Promoting Sustainable Development which is aimed at the 9-13 age range. The pack will contain three sections which will focus on the causes of global warming; ways of reducing carbon emissions and ideas to develop smaller personal carbon footprints respectively. The pack will use photographs and local case studies to meet the new national curriculum requirements. It is hoped it will be versatile enough to teach sustainable development either as a curriculum dimension itself or within the subject areas of geography, design and technology, science or citizenship. The pack will be available from Merseytravel in the summer term of 2009.

The Quality Badge scheme was launched on 2 October 2008 and the first Quality Badges were awarded in February 2009. If a provider is not yet listed in the Quality Badge database, this does not necessarily mean they are not offering a quality experience and they may be working towards meeting the quality indicators and being awarded a Quality Badge. The Quality Badge provides a national accreditation combining the essential elements of provision – learning and safety – into one easily recognisable and trusted Quality Badge for all types of Learning Outside the Classroom providers. The badge is for any organisation or venue that provides learning outside the classroom experiences for children and young people aged 019, where they Offer high quality teaching and learning experiences and manage risk effectively. For clients, the Quality Badge provides an assurance that a provider: Offers ‘what it says on the tin’ Takes account of the needs of users Has an emphasis on ‘learning/skills outcomes’ Operates in a healthy and safe environment For providers, the Quality Badge will: Accredit the quality of educational provision Provide a marketing opportunity Better enable ‘fast tracking’ for client approval Improve consistency in educational provision Provide a useful development tool The Department for Children, Schools and Families has worked in partnership with the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom to develop the LOtC Quality Badge. For more information about the Learning Outside the Classroom Manifesto and the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, please visit www.lotc.org.uk.
Merseyside BioBank (MBB) collect and collate biological and environmental information and make it available to people interested in their local environment. They promote the North Merseyside Biodiversity Action Plan and wider participation in conservation through education by supporting the biological recording community of North Merseyside. The education team at MBB work to support teachers and environmental educationalists to increase the knowledge and understanding of species and habitats across Merseyside and highlights the importance of biological recording. The team will be facilitating educators from key stages 2, through to higher education and are keen to encourage teachers and students to undertake casual records, annual surveys and more regular recording. MBB welcomes and values the contribution that schools can make to recording local wildlife. It is essential to create biological recorders of the future in order to monitor and protect the species and habitats across Merseyside, so that we don’t lose them! We are keen to encourage schools to get involved with recording in the school grounds as part of their Eco Schools programmes or their Learning Outside of the Classroom curriculum.

The Government wants every school to be a sustainable school by 2020. The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) launched their Sustainable Schools Framework in 2006 when the Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Alan Johnson MP set out challenging long-term aspirations for schools to mainstream learning about sustainable development issues and sustainable practices into everyday school life. Eco-Schools is an international award programme guiding schools on their sustainable journey and providing a framework to help embed these principles into the heart of school life. It is one of five environmental education programmes run internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). In addition to EcoSchools, FEE runs Green Key, Young Reporters for the Environment, Blue Flag and Learning about Forests. There are 46 countries around the world running the Eco-Schools programme which links more than 40,000 schools around the world. It is now easy for Eco-Schools across the world to get in touch and explore ways of working together on environmental issues. Visit www.eco-schools.net where you will find instructions on how to register your school and carry out a search. After finding an EcoSchool that matches your criteria, you can then contact the ‘match’ school by post, telephone or email! Joining the Eco-Schools programme is free and it makes tackling sustainable issues manageable and easy for all schools, whether they are children’s centres, nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools or schools with special status. Once registered, schools follow a simple seven-step process which helps them to address a variety of environmental themes, ranging from litter and waste to healthy living and biodiversity. Children are the driving force behind Eco-Schools – they lead the eco-committee and help carry out an audit to assess the environmental performance of their school. Through consultation with the rest of the school and the wider community it is the pupils that decide which environmental themes they want to address and how they are going to achieve them. Measuring and monitoring is an integral part of the Eco-Schools programme, providing schools with all the evidence they need to really shout about their environmental success.
8
Schools work towards gaining one of three awards – Bronze, Silver or the prestigious Green Flag award, which symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity. Bronze and Silver are both self accredited through the website and Green Flag is externally assessed by ENCAMS.
The Eco-Schools Programme is focused around nine key environmental topics: Water Learning how to conserve and reduce consumption Biodiversity School grounds provide an ideal opportunity to introduce children to the natural environment and to biodiversity in a practical way Energy All Eco-Schools must carry out an energy audit as part of their Environmental Review and set targets for reducing energy use through their Action Plan Global Perspectives Eco-Schools offers schools ways of obtaining global perspective with a school link or an international project on environmental issues Healthy Living Schools are key to promoting the health and well-being of young people and the wider community through Litter Many Eco-Schools choose to tackle litter as one of their first priorities following their Environmental Review School Grounds should be developed to satisfy educational and recreational requirements Transport Developing sustainable transport methods to reduce fuel consumption, pollution and car use. This includes cycling, rail, bus or walking Waste Developing policies to reduce, re use and recycle materials
However, by adopting the flexible framework of Eco-Schools and following its seven-step process, your school will also be addressing the following national initiatives: Sustainable Schools Strategy The Sustainable Schools Strategy highlights eight key doorways or areas where schools can become more sustainable. Healthy Schools promotes the health and well-being of pupils and staff through a well planned, taught curriculum in a physical and emotional environment that promotes learning and healthy lifestyle choices. International School Award support Eco-Schools linking with schools overseas as part of their Global Gateway and International Schools Award. ASDAN Awards The first nationally recognised qualification in sustainability for students in secondary schools. Every Child Matters to ensure every child, whatever their background or their circumstances, has the support they need to be healthy; stay safe; enjoy and achieve; make a positive contribution; and achieve economic well-being. Learning Outside The Classroom Often it is outside the classroom that children have their most memorable learning experiences.
The Academy of St Francis of Assisi The Academy of St Francis of Assisi is one of the first of a new breed of ‘green’ schools emerging throughout the country. The Academy is the first inter-faith school that focuses on the environment. Not only are the school facilities highly sustainable and environmentally efficient, but environmental issues have also been incorporated into the curriculum to ensure future generations understand their own effect on the world and how they can live sustainably. Green credentials include: The Academy has been designed so that students and staff learn about the environment and sustainability just by coming to school! An atrium captures the sun, heating the building Twelve photovoltaic panels provide up to 10% of The Academy’s electricity A display panel in the cyber café shows students how much electricity is being generated at any time and how much carbon dioxide has been saved so far Year 7 students are currently undertaking a project to design gardens to grow and sell healthy produce The curriculum is being developed to provide real-life learning opportunities with sustainability at the centre. The buildings and grounds are used in the curriculum Some of the furniture is made from recycled materials, including desks made from recycled yoghurt pots!
Liverpool’s Year of the Environment Liverpool’s decision to adopt a Year of the Environment has set down a marker to the rest of Merseyside and aims to take Liverpool a step closer to becoming a truly green and sustainable city. The theme of Year of the Environment is Our city Our planet which identifies the impact that positive environmental changes can have on the planet. The city is acting to tackle climate change by reducing carbon footprints and by publicising and celebrating many of the great green initiatives already in action and actively encouraging initiation of and participation in others. The Year of the Environment is a great time to enrich the school learning experience with more environmental education. Education plays an important part in understanding how our actions can affect the environment, how we can change our habits, and ‘do our bit’ to conserve the environment. The Environmental Services team at Liverpool City Council (LCC) produces a range of leaflets that provide information on the services on offer, and how recycling collections work in the city. They have approximately 180 schools in the area and most of these schools participate in the recycling service offered by LCC. The team provides advice and support to schools wishing to become more environmentally friendly, and LCC also has a comprehensive range of activities delivered by the Park Rangers that supports environmental education.

Eco-Schools, Healthy Schools and International School Awards are just some of the environmental award schemes on offer to schools. Sometimes it can be a little confusing as to how they all fit together, and the challenge is for schools to integrate the programmes on offer in a way which underpins the school ethos or climate for learning. There is no right or wrong way to do this as it will depend upon the school’s individual circumstances and the interests and passions of the school leadership, staff, parents and of course pupils.
During the spring of 2009, all schools in the city will receive a free environmental education pack, produced by LCC. The pack contains activities, information, a CD-Rom and a DVD to help schools achieve a greener status. Around 75% of schools in the city are registered under the Eco-Schools scheme and in the near future teachers and students will be encouraged to make environmental pledges to commit to changing their environmental habits and to record progress. In the meantime the following are examples of pledges that staff or pupils could consider making. I work at a school, and I pledge to: Organise a waste free lunch Switch off lights if I am the last to leave a room Switch to using recycled paper for all our office needs Ensure electrical equipment is switched off and not left on standby Assist in helping the school gain Eco-Schools status Carry out an energy audit Recyce or compost kitchen waste from the canteen I am a young person attending school, and I pledge to: Switch off the tap after washing my hands Not leave the tap running whilst brushing my teeth Ask my parents/guardian to use re-usable shopping bags Ask my parents/guardian to switch to energy saving light bulbs Recycle my comics or magazines Re-use plastic water bottles Walk to school whenever I can Use both sides of paper Ask my teacher to do some recycled art classes Put my rubbish in a bin or take it home with me Become involved in the Eco-Schools programme at my school 9

Voluntary Ofsted Registration A voluntary side now exists to the Ofsted Childcare Register which allows non statutory, self registration for participating organisations. Voluntary registration means parents will know that an organisation has met basic standards designed to safeguard children. It also means eligible parents will be able to get help with the costs of their childcare through Working Tax Credit and employer-supported childcare schemes. Local authorities offer support and training to registered providers and pass on their details to parents who are looking for childcare and schools using external organisations to provide an extended service are encouraged to work with registered providers. In order to register, the care must be provided for at least two hours a day or joined up to the beginning or end of the school day; or be part of an arrangement whereby care is provided for a continuous period of at least two hours (e.g. part of
extended schools activities or childcare). All staff with unsupervised access to children must undergo a check with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). Staff, premises, equipment and care provision must be safe and suitable. At least one staff member who is caring for children must have an appropriate first aid certificate, and one member of staff must have had appropriate training covering the common core skills. The registered provider must also have public liability insurance. Ofsted will select a proportion of providers for inspection at random, and there will always be an inspection following a complaint. After inspection, Ofsted will write to childcare providers to tell them if they have met the requirements for registration. To make an application, or for more information, contact Ofsted on 08456 404040 or visit www.ofsted.gov.uk.
London-bound for musical inspiration! Forty eight children from Faith Primary School in West Everton, with teachers, family members and representatives from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic traveled to London’s Southbank Centre for an inspirational trip to hear the internationally acclaimed Venezuelan Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. The children participated in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s In Harmony Liverpool music programme. The young members of the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra and their equally youthful conductor, Gustavo Dudamel — one of the most sought-after in the world - are the product of the hugely successful Venezuelan project El Sistema. The project is the inspiration for the DCSF’s national In Harmony programme which encourages participation in music in the form of the symphony orchestra, offering free tuition and instruments to inspire and bring positive change to the lives of children in the most deprived areas of England, delivering benefits across the wider community. El Sistema has transformed the lives of over half-a-million young Venezuelans in the 34 years since it was founded. The Liverpool Phil successfully bid for and won one of the DCSF’s three national pilots to deliver In Harmony Liverpool in West Everton. The programme will ensure that music-making takes place 5 days per week for the children based at Faith Primary School.
10
The Liverpool Phil’s In Harmony team have already been working with the children at Faith Primary School, starting every school day with Shake Up and Sing, a ten minute singing activity with the whole school. The school took delivery of 92 free instruments ranging from violins, violas, cellos and double basses which were allocated to every child, plus every member of staff including teachers, teaching assistants, school head and the school secretary.
In addition to daily singing, the children will receive twice-weekly, expert group instrumental tuition by professional musicians from the Liverpool Phil and Liverpool Music Support Service, supported by musicians, staff and students from Liverpool Hope University. Every Friday afternoon, the children will come together for a full school orchestra session in Liverpool Phil at the Friary, the Phil’s new rehearsal and recording venue, located adjacent to Faith Primary School. Peter Garden, the Phil’s Executive Director (Learning & Engagement) said: “It’s great for the children and staff from Faith Primary School to hear the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra before they start their instrumental tuition and children's orchestra next week. The young musicians are inspirational not only because they receive an ecstatic response for the exceptionally high standard and exuberance of their performances, but because they and El Sistema have completely exploded the myth that you have to be from a privileged background to enjoy, play and succeed in orchestral music.”
Parents, teachers and pupils across Merseyside have been playing an active role in making School Travel Plans a big success. Since the region’s first schools started adopting their own travel plans more than eight years ago, TravelWise has seen the initiative grow in popularity with school communities. 400 schools have now adopted Travel Plans with 40 more to do so this year. A School Travel Plan is a commitment from the whole school community to help reduce congestion, particularly outside the school gates, and to encourage pupils, parents and school staff to choose healthier, greener and more sustainable and environmentally-friendly ways of travelling to school - such as walking, cycling and public transport - instead of relying on the car. The TravelWise Merseyside campaign, a partnership between the five Merseyside local authorities and Merseytravel, works with schools to encourage school communities to walk, cycle or catch the bus to school. Most schools have already seen a reduction in the number of cars outside their school gates. Improving road safety near schools is an important part of School Travel Plans, with initiatives aimed at reducing car use to the school site and giving children the skills to become more independent travellers. The BIG Walk to School event in June has proved to be one of the most popular campaigns. As part of the BIG Walk to School, pupils, parents and school staff are challenged to swap the car, in favour of walking to school, at least once a week during the summer term. And there are always some fab prizes up for grabs for the most dedicated walkers, including stickers and school trips to local attractions such as the Walker Art Gallery. Family prizes have included tickets to the National Wildflower Centre. 200 schools took part in the BIG Walk to School in May 2008 and plans are afoot to encourage even more to get involved this year! Cycling is also becoming a popular way to get to school. With Merseyside delivering the largest cycle training programme in the UK, 23,000 pupils have been trained to new national Bikeability standards since 2006. Bikeability replaces and improves on the old cycling proficiency tests. All year 5, 6 and year 7 pupils are now offered on-road training from Cycling Solutions, a local social enterprise organisation. Children learn important skills to become confident when on their bikes. Training takes place on roads around school and for secondary school pupils frequently used routes such as the home to school journey are used. As part of their School Travel Plans, many schools have installed new secure cycle storage facilities to ensure these new cyclists have a safe place to leave their bikes. Sarah Dewar, TravelWise Co-ordinator, is pleased with the commitment Merseyside schools are showing towards School

Travel Plans. She said: “We’re getting some really encouraging feedback from schools on the difference School Travel Plans are making. “Schools have seen many benefits, from reducing congestion around the school gates and improving the alertness and fitness levels of pupils, to even encouraging more interaction between the whole school community. “Most of the region’s schools are already on board and we’re working with those schools who are yet to adopt a School Travel Plan. We aim to continue offering schools the help and support they need to meet their individual travel goals.” To find out if your school has adopted a School Travel Plan and how you can get involved, visit www.LetsTravelWise.org and check out the schools pages, or call 0151 330 1253 for further details.

Wirral Youth Theatre/Youth Arts (WYT) Music projects WYT is part of Wirral Youth and Play Service and has been succesfully developing leading edge arts education programmes for over twenty years and is currently working with the support of the national charity Youth Music on three exciting projects. The work is delivered in house, at Pacific Road Arts Centre and as part of an outreach programme in schools and community settings. The workshops provide music opportunities for groups of Wirral young people aged 13+ and for those 16+ there is provision for peer educating training, working towards accreditation for V or Arts Awards. This is a programme of skills building for young people which provides fantastic opportunities to develop bands and vocal training. Sound Steps Band Workshops Whether young people play or are considering learning to play an instrument e.g. guitar, drums or keyboards, or are interested in making music using music technology, these sessions are designed specifically around their needs. Young people work with like minded musicians, professional musicians and experienced facilitators towards regular gigs at Pacific Road and other Merseyside venues. Sound Steps Vocal Workshops Working with a professional vocal coach, young people will improve their vocal skills by taking part in group and solo singing. They will also practice harmony skills and work with a mix of contemporary music including Pop, R'n'B and Rock. Whether participants are complete beginners or experienced singers, there is value in completing these fun and energised sessions. Voltage - V Music Volunteer Programme Voltage is a music volunteering programme for young people aged 16-25 supported by the National Foundation for Youth Music. Funded by V, the youth volunteering charity, Voltage gives young people the chance to act as ambassadors for music and make a positive difference to their community. Voltage aims to help young people build confidence and gain new skills with the opportunity to acquire rewards and accreditation for their contributions to the programme. "An excellent day for the whole school. Very well received by staff and pupils, and the assembly was brilliant." Alexandra Park Junior School, Stockport
Skills such as diabolo, plate spinning and juggling with scarves, beanbags or balls improve hand-eye coordination, concentration, manipulation, throwing and catching skills, encompassing both fine and gross motor control and are excellent cross lateral exercises. Larger equipment such as stilts, pedal-gos and unicycles require balance and control of the whole body, activating the vestibular system, waking up the brain and preparing it to take in new information. Pupils will experience pattern, sequence, timing and rhythm through the use of coloured equipment and the rhythmic movement of their arms in manipulating the equipment through set patterns, stimulating both the logical-left and creative-right hemispheres of the brain. Concentration, focus and perseverance are necessary to master the skills which are broken down into progressive, attainable steps, creating a sense of achievement and boosting in selfesteem. There is plenty of scope for co-operative work as, with only a few basic skills, pupils can work in groups to choreograph presentations and develop performance routines. Once learnt, the skills will be lifelong and can be built upon at any time, the benefits spilling into other aspects of life and learning.

It was after returning to England following the 1974 tour with fellow Jamaican 'Jimmy Cliff' which included dates in Lagos, Trinidad and New York that Jesse signed a solo contract and released his first album "Nice and Slow" for EMI."Nice and Slow", the title track for the album was a hit single and shot to No.1 on the US Billboard Disco chart. Jesse has been successfully teaching music since the mid 80’s and specialises in full drum kit and base guitar which as contemporary instruments often have a greater appeal to young musicians than more traditional instruments and which can be used to attract a broader mix of pupils to join in the musical experience. He is also a qualified singing coach with a wealth of experiential performance knowledge to impart and can take beginners keyboard classes. Magical Circus Shows and make-up workshops
Mini Circus Shows are performed by Kuki & Krums the clowns with their mini stage to set the scene. The clowns are on mobile microphones and the shows come with elaborate lighting and sound equipment. A 1 hour fun, colourful show involves acrobatics, clown comedy sketches, music, dancing, puppets, magic, competitions and lots of audience participation. The contents of the shows are designed to entertain the entire school including the teachers. Special Christmas Mini Circus Shows come with Christmas decorations, the theme of Christmas in Circus and a grand finale by special guests Father Christmas and Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer marionettes. The shows are suitable for up to 250 children seated indoors, aged 3 – 11 years. They can be provided as a mid or end of term treat, used to brighten up a Fete, Fair or Fun Day or as something special at Christmas, an alternative to the Pantomime. The shows are renewed each year, so schools return year in year out for more fun with the clowns. Theatrical & Media Make-up Workshops involve skills that are highly challenging to learn as the techniques used are more complicated and elaborate than every day make-up and use unfamiliar materials, which means that male and female participants start at the same level. Theatrical make-up also requires the use of the imagination and artistic talents and a good deal of patience and cooperation. Participants work in pairs and at close proximity so they need to show respect and understanding for one another and they need to be self motivated and self disciplined to achieve the required effects within a limited time schedule. Workshops can be arranged in support of the curriculum, as part of an Arts Festival, in preparation for a School Play or as a fun introduction to a training day. They are ideal for male and female students aged 11 and over. All equipment and materials are supplied and students can learn how to do Black eyes, Grazes, Cuts, Basic wounds, Bruises, Facial hair, Ageing, Illness, Burns, Photographic and Stage make-up. Individual workshops last 2 – 3 hours for up to 30 pupils, workshop days for 4 – 6 hours (30 to 60 pupils) and a full week can be arranged to culminate in a demonstration of work.

RU@SCHOOL Coaching in contact sports
“RU@SCHOOL was excellent in providing a personalized learning program to meet the needs and interests of all pupils involved. We look forward to working with RU@SCHOOL in the future and fully recommend Chris and his team to anyone.” Ms. K Tierney, Teacher Abbots Lea Special Needs School
Despite the ‘Rugby Union at School’ Tag line, they have found the best way to develop pupils is by using a mix of sports. In this way their training sessions allow participants of all levels to take something for their own personal development. RU@SCHOOL coaches have experience and training in boxing, wrestling, judo, Ju Jitsu, weight and resistance training, speed agility and quickness training and have theoretical knowledge of diet and nutrition. RU@SCHOOL pride themselves on leaving a lasting impact on all pupils that they come into contact with. They make great efforts to work with local sports clubs in order to create a strong school/club link and believe that they can do this effectively by committing coaches to “any session at any time”. This is because RU@SCHOOL has a strong network of coaches that really sets them apart from other coaching companies. There is a wide mix youthful exuberance and experience, with the majority of coaches being Semi – Professional players. They can call on full time professional sports men and women to supplement their own delivery and they have access to coaches from different parts of the world like South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. The use of these coaches has proved a resounding success in the more challenging schools, allowing the boys to learn about sport and different cultures.
Key information
RU@SCHOOL has a passionate belief that young people can succeed with the right expertise and the right support. Judo The Olympic Sport of Judo is one of the few sports accessible to almost anyone, including children, and people with disabilities. Because it emphasizes physical and mental development, its influence extends to every area of a person’s life. Physically, Judo improves flexibility, coordination, balance and reflexes. It is a means of self-defence that requires skill rather than just size or strength. Mentally, it promotes concentration, self-confidence and leadership. Because Judo requires a clear and focused mind, it encourages participants to be fully present in the moment. They become more observant and better able to channel their mental and physical energy. With its strict moral and ethical principles, and its humanitarian approach to life, Judo fosters a sense of respect and consideration. Participants are taught to strive for physical, intellectual and moral perfection, so they can not only improve their own life, but also contribute to the greater good. Fencing The Olympic Sport of Fencing is not only an adventurous way to make sure your pupils achieve their five hours of weekly physical activity, the sport also offers an array of benefits to the long-term health of anyone who participates. Fencing provides a perfect form of cardio vascular exercise, as it's a fast-paced activity that gets the heart pumping and oxygen flowing. This leads to benefits including increased stamina, strengthened heart and lungs and increased immune function. It also reduces stress in a safe and enjoyable manner which is excellent during the examination months. With its complex physical manoeuvres, fencing also helps develop muscle strength, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. The positions and movements in fencing must be precise to be powerful. In order to perfect that precision, the body must 36
become flexible and strong. In fencing, as in any martial art, power and precision go hand in hand.

Magical Circus Circus skills workshops
“Many thanks - the children had a ball!” Ruth Spencer, Belgrave School PTA, Chester
Circus Skills Workshops are great fun for all and with determination and hard work the skills are achievable by absolutely everyone. Circus skills are also a great form of exercise and develop the physique evenly, unlike some sports which require specialized use of certain muscle groups. They require flexibility, strength, agility and balance, all of which improve with time through repetition. Circus skills also develop concentration, hand-eye co-ordination, motivation and self discipline. Finally, they necessitate the setting of goals, the development of problem solving techniques and team building skills. The personal rewards resulting from each small achievement are immense and become the driving force to the next level, be it alone, with friends or within a class group. Circus Skills can be taught to any age group but for practical purposes workshops are recommended for pupils age 5 and over. Magical Circus is proud that their workshops are accessible to all. They provide individual attention to each participant and take individual needs into consideration when providing them with suitable skills and involving them in the group. They have worked successfully with children and adults with challenging behaviour, a range of physical disabilities and learning difficulties. Previous customers include MENCAP, Downs Syndrome of Wirral, Underley Educational Services and HM Prison Altcourse. Workshops can be arranged to coincide with a specific part of the curriculum, as an end of term treat, for a special celebration, as part of an Arts Festival, at a Fete or Fair, as a fun introduction to a Training Day or as a Team Building Exercise. Skills taught include, Juggling, Diabolo, Devil Sticks, Balancing, Spinning Plates, Hand-held and Hands-free Stilts, Hulahoops, Rolla Bolla, Tight-wire Walking, Pedal goes, Unicycling, Balloon Modelling and Face Painting. Single workshops are for up to 30 participants and last 1 hour, while a Circus Workshop Day can cater for anything from 30 to 150. A Circus Workshop Week can be arranged to culminate in a performance by the students of their achievements.

Skill Force Instruction and mentoring
“Skill Force is making a significant difference to the lives of many young people across the country. Their teams' proven ability to engage with young people, changing attitudes and inspiring achievement, is having a very positive effect; not only in terms of qualifications gained and employability for students, but also on attendance, behaviour and respect within our schools.” Lord Andrew Adonis, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools
Instruction and Mentoring is provided mainly by ex-armed forces personnel, who develop a close working relationship with individuals and instill a culture of respect and mutual support. Distinct from, yet working in support of teachers, Skill Force delivers recognised qualifications and develops life skills. This produces Positive Outcomes for students, improved results for schools and untold benefits for the communities in which our people operate. Skill Force’s aim is to deliver inspiring programmes that increase the number of young people entering further education, employment and training on leaving school. They can provide a variety of courses to suit your school: • Short and long term courses (6 weeks - 2 years) • Primary School Projects • Vocational Programme KS4 – pre uniform service course. • Key Stage 3 and 4 programmes • KS4- Re–engagement programme 1 full day/week over 2 yrs. • Gifted and talented programmes • Sixth form projects • Leadership programmes • Specialist summer camps There is no 'typical' Skill Force student as the programme is flexible and can be designed to meet the needs of individual schools. Skill Force will arrange a meeting with your school to discuss your needs and tailor their successful programmes to suit your specific requirements. Adventure rope course – one of the largest adventure ropes courses in the UK and ideal for all age groups. This activity builds confidence and the sense of achievement is both exhilarating and rewarding. Jacobs Ladder – will test teamwork, trust and communication to the full as each ‘step’ on the giant ladder is increasingly further to reach than the one before. Leap of faith - develops trust, motivation and personal confidence, with the ‘ultimate challenge’ in the memories of most participants. Climb to the top of a 10m telegraph pole, stand on a tiny platform and jump across the void to the trapeze bar. High all aboard - Teamwork and trust are high on the agenda as four people at a time climb to the top of the 10m telegraph pole to stand on a 12 inch square platform, where space is of a premium! Once there they need to link arms and lean back with just their toes on the edge. Climbing wall – for experienced or novice climber to exceed their expectations, by setting a target and surpassing it. Power fan - Step off at 14m and experience the high speed drop. This spectacular activity allows students to explore new boundaries. Team tasks - A variety of ground based tasks designed to teach skills such as communication, problem solving, leadership and teamwork. Every task can be facilitated to deliver a variety of outcomes, all within a fun and challenging environment. Extreme Safety Aerial Extreme generates a euphoric sense of achievement by pushing students outside their comfort zone and allowing a perceived sense of risk. In reality the risk is minimal as Aerial Extreme employ safety measures that are second to none. Their high ropes courses are built by the most experienced constructors in the UK and they have pioneered a revolutionary safety system called Expoglider® which is a personal continuous belay system that allows the user to pass from obstacle to obstacle, without having to unclip from the safety cable above.

Jungle Parc allows children to gain new levels of confidence, self reliance and team awareness while experiencing an activity that is exciting, demanding and importantly, great fun. Another advantage of Jungle Parc over other sporting or physical activities is its attraction to pupils. She is in the final year of her Early Years Degree and established the company in 1999 to combine child friendly entertainment with a professional service, to create everlasting memories for each and every valued customer.
“A company with great experience of delivering theme days for the private, corporate and school sectors.”
Happy Hippos offer a unique and innovative service to nursery and primary schools across Merseyside. They have created a number of themed days which can transform a school, a classroom or a nursery into a magical world which stimulates the children’s powers of imagination and fantasy to create a truly memorable experience. Themes include pirates, fairy tales, dragons and knight, traditional stories and others can be created in response to your school’s specific educational requirements. The days are designed around storytelling and literacy and children are encouraged to attend in fancy dress while Happy Hippos will research the theme specifically for your day and will decorate your rooms out with appropriate scenery, supply supporting reading material and also costumes and props to enhance the chosen theme. A typical day will involve individual classes of storytelling where Sharon will involve the children in performing the stories and bringing them to life through drama. Many different books and stories will be used throughout the day and the children will have their imaginations tested to the full. Often, themes will have been worked on and developed by the children over the weeks leading up to the day and will have been involved in reading, art, craft and drama sessions, culminating in the actual day. Days can be arranged as a reward day or in support of many aspects of the curriculum, school book days, educational outings or even historical based assemblies. With 3,000 costumes and years of creative experience there really is no limit to the scope of this wonderful service provided by this small but dedicated company.

beadybeady Jewellery workshops
Sessions with beadybeady provide creative and affordable fun with an amazing variety of beads meaning there are literally thousands of combinations to fully extend your pupils’ creative and design skills. A beadybeady workshop can be used to raise money for your school. We can organise a jewellery making session at your school which will involve no outlay from school funds. Children attending the session will simply pay for the items they make on the day (£1 and £2 per item) and we will donate 20% of all the proceeds back into schools funds. All we require from the school is a base room to host the event and where the children can come in classes or groups to have fun and be creative throughout the day (to suit your timetable commitments). We organise everything and print up a master flyer which includes prices and a tick box. We will also handle all the administration and any monetary transactions on the day, meaning you can enjoy a trouble free day and a smooth running workshop where your pupils can concentrate on being creative, making fab funky jewellery. There are specialist workshops and packages for Mother’s Day and Christmas. Alternatively, if you prefer, your pupils can make an extra 100 items of jewellery for free and these can then be sold on their own stand at your school fair or event with the proceeds going into school funds. Some schools prefer this method of fundraising as it allows pupils to learn new skills by participating in their own business project. beadybeady can have a stand at your school fair or PTA event where the children and adults make their own jewellery and purchase pre-made jewellery if they wish. There is no outlay for your school, and they still give a generous 20% of money taken back to school funds. beadybeady is an established, experienced and reliable provider of creative workshops in school settings. Lorraine, a qualified nurse, has enhanced CRB clearance, comprehensive public liability insurance, child protection training, NVQ assessors’ qualifications and NVQ customer service certificates. beadybeady is committed to providing the very best products, service and value to all their clients and workshops can be organised to suit your schools’ specific requirements.

Dominic Kelly Creative storytelling Dominic is a prominent storyteller with a national reputation for performances in schools, museums, festivals, libraries and theatres. Through flowing narrative, vivid imagery, and his dynamic and subtle feel for pace and mood, he draws audiences into the world of the story. His repertoire includes folktales, myths and legends from England, Ireland and around the world.
“You managed to captivate everyone and all came away with nothing but praise.” Moulton School, Cheshire “The children were enthralled and listened spellbound. This led into some fantastic storyboard writing. We will certainly be making good use of the storytelling techniques in our literacy work.” Higham St John’s CE Primary, Lancashire
Dominic’s work in schools draws not only on his professional storytelling experience but also on eight years as a qualified teacher in primary and secondary schools. He gives performances and workshops for all ages from Nursery to Sixth Form. His storytelling provides an imaginative springboard for learning across the curriculum, and helps to develop concentration and speaking and listening skills. For younger years he combines the wonder and humour of folktales and legends with infectious audience participation that involves the children in the telling. For older pupils he performs longer pieces, often with more challenging emotional depth. These include complex folktales from the Irish and Scottish Gaelic traditions, legends of the supernatural, and Norse and Celtic myths. Programmes & Projects In a day of performances Dominic can provide four sessions of up to an hour in length (depending on the age of the group). He can also provide projects combining performances with workshops: through individual, paired and group activities and games. Dominic uses a wide range of oral, kinaesthetic and visual techniques to help pupils develop their storytelling skills and narrative creativity. Projects can culminate in older pupils performing stories to small audiences of younger children in the school in a ‘Storyfair’ event; they could equally lead into creative writing, drama or artwork sessions.
54
Dominic’s storytelling offers an invaluable resource to engage and entertain pupils and to stimulate imagination, interest and activity in a broad spectrum of curricular topics and the storytelling sessions and associated workshops can be tailored to suit your particular educational requirements. Urban Creatives can design and deliver a range of workshops and projects to suit the different ages, abilities and needs of both students and schools across the borough, providing an opportunity to play and explore a range of creative activities. All our workshops can be tailored to enhance or complement the curriculum. “When I was young there were at least three art colleges on the Wirral and now that they have gone” says Urban Creatives’ Director Sue Rees. “We want to try to re-create the pleasure of those days by offering inspiring places and spaces for all sectors of our community to enjoy. We believe that everyone is creative, but that people often don’t have the opportunity to fully explore this side of their personality, concentrating on other roles and careers instead. This is both a shame for them and a waste for the community and society as a whole.”

Urban Creatives Creative workshops
“For all of us, ignoring our creative side can lead to frustration, stress and resentment. So, if this sounds familiar and you have a secret yearning to play the saxophone, throw a tin of paint on a canvas or sing your heart out, then find a way to do it – and maybe we can even help you!” Well run workshops for schools can provide opportunities for achievement which in turn can raise both motivation levels and self-esteem. They are also as much about the process as any finished works, encouraging fresh ideas and ‘can do’ attitudes. They can be just for fun, which in itself is beneficial, or with specific purposes and outcomes. Wherever possible, Urban Creatives like to encourage carers and parents to become involved too, especially in the ‘fun’ workshops. Using creativity as the catalyst, the following is a small selection of the workshops on offer, all of which can be 'mixed and matched' to suit requirements: Arts and Crafts Workshops where students can show up, make a mess and have fun! They are taught a range of skills from painting to textiles; from making gifts to revamping furniture; from creating cards to collages. There are many projects which students can choose to take part in. Workshops to support students in making their career decisions; setting goals; aspirations and confidence building Art based activities to help explore issues around emotional intelligence, communication skills and respect Urban Creatives can also design projects which encourage involvement with older generations and others which help students to develop an appreciation of nature and their own environment, both topics which are very important for students and the wider community Urban Creatives welcome the opportunity to discuss any aspect of our work with you, so have a look at the website, send an email or give Sue a call.

understanding of the world. Arty Pants was very well received by Great Crosby Catholic Primary School in March 2009 when they completed a 6 week after school art club, where the children’s work was exhibited in a local gallery in partnership with The Children’s University and Sefton’s Extended Schools department. They run after school clubs, one off projects and holiday clubs and with the support of ‘Step Clever’ they are able to run subsided workshops within their wards. Their workshops are tailored to meet the needs of your school’s learning objectives. Within each workshop they design, plan and produce art activities for children that ignite their imagination, grasp their attention and encourage their artistic minds to explore a varied selection of art and craft materials. Children also explore different art techniques and build up a variety of skills as well as making new friends. Workshops vary from self contained activities completed in one session, to larger more in depth projects running over consecutive weeks. They provide and store all equipment and materials along with work produced from week to week when necessary, giving opportunities for larger scale work to be produced. Projects will use a variety of medium and techniques to create everything from two dimensional drawings to 3D construction and will introduce the children to different textures, materials and sensations, while also developing their own unique means of self expression. Sessions will include a mix of mono printing, screen printing, painting, drawing, pastels, clay, papier mache, mosaics, textile art, salt dough, natural materials, photography and recycled materials. Church Farm Organics Education down on the farm Church Farm is a working organic farm in Wirral, specialising in school and group visits. How many children know how to grow a carrot? Why can’t sheep bite? Why do pigs like mud? At Church Farm, groups can learn all about how their food is grown. They can also meet the farm animals and find out more about them.
“Church Farm provided the children with an excellent, educational day, filled with interactive activities and lots of opportunities to see the ‘Soil to Stomach’ process. I would definitely visit again!” C. McWilliam, teacher, King’s Meadow Primary School, Southport “I really enjoyed planting my own seeds, and can’t wait to see them grow.” Reece, Year 4, King’s Meadow Primary School
Church Farm was one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, by the Department for Children, Schools and Families. This means the farm is recognised as a provider of safe, quality educational experiences for young people. “We’re not just a farm park - we’re a working organic farm,” says Jonny Bentley, education co-ordinator. “We grow vegetables and fruit to sell in our farm shop. It’s really important for children to understand where our food comes from, and how it’s grown. We take groups on a tractor ride up into the fields, and show them how we grow our carrots, potatoes, asparagus and more. Guests can even plant their own crops, then come back when they are ready, and harvest and take home their produce.” “We explain the plant life cycle from seed to harvest, show how we prepare the produce for sale, and also cover the importance of fruit and vegetables in a healthy diet. The children will also meet the farm animals including our cows, sheep, donkeys, alpacas, ponies, goats and pigs. Groups have the opportunity to help feed and look after the animals, collect eggs from the hen house, and stroke the guinea pigs and rabbits.” Church Farm has an indoor classroom and eating area that can be booked with any trip, and if your group needs to let off a bit of steam, there’s a play area with sandpits and go-karts too.
62

Martin Mere Wetland Centre Autumn visits Martin Mere Wetland Centre is home to over 100 species of rare and endangered ducks, geese, swans, flamingos and beavers. Open all year round, it offers pupils of all ages hands-on learning experiences led by experienced Teacher Explainers, and a safe environment in which to explore the wealth of Lancashire's wildlife. Inquisitive Hawaiian Geese will nibble grain from the hand whilst you tour the world's wetlands through the carefully planned pathways. In contrast, watch, from the comfort and choice of ten lookout hides, internationally important numbers of ducks, geese and swans gathering in winter to form spectacular feeding flocks on seasonally flooded wetlands which enjoy SSSI (Site of Scientific Interest)/SPA (Special Protection Area) and Ramsar status. Contrary to popular belief the season at Martin Mere doesn’t finish at the end of summer. The wonderful natural habitat is a hive of activity right through until October and November. Autumn is a particularly good time for a school field trip to Martin Mere. They have recently built four new dipping ponds, enclosed in a giant cage so the birds can’t get in and eat the pond creatures, that stay alive right up to the onset of winter! Another advantage of an Autumn visit is that with fewer school parties present they can give your group their undivided attention! They also run extremely successful programmes on habitats, food chains and webs, and adaptations, right through to November. Also in November, the geese and swans arrive from Iceland for the winter, and the whole place exudes a genuine buzz of excitement as they welcome back old friends with their new families among the famous Whooper swans. The migration programme ‘My Great Adventure’ includes a trip to the 75m long Swanlink Hide to watch a daily swan feed, plus games and science role-play activities. Autumn is a great time for field trips to Martin Mere as it gives you, the teacher, the chance to get to know your new class in a relaxed and natural environment. A room for lunch and support you while you are here is all provided, and you will find staff very friendly, positive, approachable and knowledgeable. There are days available during our schools’ Living History fortnight, which runs from 23rd September to 3rd October inclusive. Schools can bring a maximum of 40 children and choose either Celts and Romans, or Vikings. You will be sent plenty of information beforehand suggesting how to dress as a native of Mere Tun; all about the roundhouse village, and what authentic food to bring. Martin Mere Wetland Centre caters for groups of all ages, from schools, colleges, scouts, brownies, cubs, and play-schemes.

Gene Journey Supporting biology and ethics Illumination Educational Software has developed a regularly updated online resource on genetics called Gene Journey. The site includes an extensive video library which provides a rich resource to stimulate debate on issues which will affect all our lives. On offer is a range of workshops which use Gene Journey and innovative software they have designed specifically for debates.
“I enjoyed using the Virtual Lab in class; it was fun being told what to do by my friends if I got stuck. I would also like to use it at home where I can work at my own pace.” GCSE Biology Student at Wirral County Grammar School for Boys “We think it is brilliant...It is the best resource we have seen for the teaching of these topics.” Marlene Griffin, Head of Biology, Hitchin High School.
Gene Journey includes video, animation and a variety of interactive tasks. It is being used by a wide range of students studying genetics at school, college and university – from GCSE and A-level biology students to nursing and biological science undergraduates. Gene Journey can be used in class as a group activity or students can work at their own pace either in a computer suite or from home. Many of the tasks work extremely well with an interactive whiteboard. The aim of ‘Chromosome Challenge’ is to identify all the human chromosomes. Oliver, a GSCE Biology Student, from St Anselm’s Catholic College comments: “Really interesting, a great way to learn and much better than the way we did it in class when we had to cut out the chromosomes and stick them in a book”. The site also includes an innovative virtual cytogenetics lab allowing students to carry out a series of interactive tasks, based on how samples of amniotic fluid are analysed in a real laboratory. Tasks include tissue culture and analysing a PCR sample; the experience provides a genuine feel for what it is like to work in a lab. Gene Journey includes video clips of people whose work involves genetics, as well as people affected by genetic conditions. For example, Nobel Prize winner, John Sulston, who played a leading role in the Human Genome Project, discusses the ethics of patenting genes. As well as providing an invaluable interactive educational resource, the site aims to empower young people to play an active part in the debate on how genetics should impact on all our lives now and in the future. 68

Take a guided tour through a section of the network of tunnels and view exhibitions which depict the life and times of one of Liverpool's most eccentric characters.
"Vaulted passageways cut out of solid rock: archways thrown up by craftsman's hands, beautiful in proportion, elegant in form, but supporting nothing. Tunnels formed here - deep pits there." James Stonehouse, Historian
KS2/3 Pieces from the Past Become an archaeologist and investigate the past by analysing artefacts from the 19th Century, found in the tunnel excavations. This workshop develops powers of observation and can be used to support the history syllabus. Supporting material, worksheets and equipment provided. KS3 Tunnel Vision Tour Explore the tunnels with a guide and look for clues to how the tunnels were built. Discover what can be learned about the workers' lives from the features inside. The tour encourages pupils to use their powers of observation and deduction and to consider why the tunnels were built. This session can be used to support cross-curricular study in history, science and geography. KS3/4 Leisure and Tourism (GCSE) and (‘A’ Level) The Tunnels are an ideal case study for the Leisure and Tourism syllabus and can be usefully compared with larger scale and higher budget attractions. Pupils can analyse the public tour as experienced by visitors to the Heritage Centre. This also includes a general background to Williamson, his story and details the centre's future plans. This is followed by a question and answer session with either the Centre Manager or Finance Officer. There is an accompanying resource pack showing the staffing and volunteer structure, funding sources, marketing, visitor numbers, facilities and evaluation procedures. Dance Passion A passion for Spanish
“Dance Passion really made the culture come alive, brought a real wow factor to the conference and showed teachers how they could use simple language in a very enjoyable creative way. It was amazing to see everyone up on their feet and dancing.” Jane Hegedus, Consultant for Primary Languages, Lancashire
Dancing Dancing since the age of 3, Clare began dancing ballet, taking up Latin American in her early teens. She cites the discipline and precision of ballet being the heart of her success as a Latin American dancer. Clare feels dance and her drive and passion come through in every performance with every performance is performed as if it’s her last. Clare has danced on the international stage for a number of years and more recently has had high profile appearances on stage and TV. She has become a leading authority in the world of choreography, won critical acclaim with her original and breathtaking dance performances. Clare’s technical knowledge is second to none and her attention to detail is without compromise. Spanish Days The Spanish Days were designed to link in with the national curriculum and begin with a demonstration of the Paso Doble by Clare and her dance partner. Children will then be treated to a workshop on the dance, based on the dance demonstration. All workshops start with a short warm-up, in preparation for the main activities of the lesson. Children will learn the history of the dance in a fun, lively, creative and friendly environment. Basic Spanish such as numbers 1-8, right and left, boys/girls and instructions suitable for dancing will be taught during the workshop. The children will also be taught figures of the dance, working on the characterisation of the Paso Doble. There will also be the opportunity to talk about, explore and play with, dance and movement ideas. The children will be given specific guidance on choreography as well as general feedback and praise.

“Our goals can only be reached, through the vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” Pablo Picasso
Realising our potential through: 1. Careers Education and Guidance 2. Staff development 3. Workshops 4. Personal coaching 5. Auditing and action planning Sylvia has more than 20 years experience of working with schools across Merseyside. She is a qualified Careers Adviser, trainer, manager and Master Coach having been trained in Accelerated Learning and Personal Performance Coaching. She has extensive networks in the field of Careers Education and Guidance (CEG) and in the business world. She says “When I left school, there were lots of jobs to choose from and I expected to have a career for life. Young people today can no longer expect to have a single ‘career’. Instead they need to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will equip them to navigate the world of work, make progress and manage a series of transitions throughout their life”. These can be developed through an effective Careers Education programme which provides access to up to date, impartial Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG). "A whole school approach to IAG is vital: supporting young people to make decisions that will impact on their later learning and career options has to be central to a school's mission." First and foremost these Focus Days are fun, educational and inclusive. This exciting initiative from ‘Health Matters Education’ has been so well received by hundreds of schools across the UK that demand has now led them to recruit even more tutors, all of whom demonstrate a real passion for children’s health and well being. These hand picked tutors undergo rigorous training and quality assurance to ensure they have the necessary skills to engage everyone and importantly, demonstrate that they can generate a rapport with pupils and school staff. The emphasis of the day is to provide staff and pupils with an insight into the ‘Health Matters’ and ‘Busy Feet’ programmes whilst providing all those that observe with a wealth of ideas and an understanding of how the resources work in practice. Some schools have welcomed this as an opportunity to engage parents into many of the varied workshops on offer. Throughout the day their tutors will outline links between curriculum subjects and areas of learning, as this can deepen children’s understanding and make learning about health and fitness a real and exciting experience. Cost: approx £280 + VAT per full day delivery, depending on the location.

The Junior Chefs Academy has been helping schools to achieve healthy eating status across the North West. Sessions are vibrant and educational and all pupils take home their own masterpiece; personalised chef’s hat; apron and recipe pack at the end of the day.

Junior Chefs Academy Hands-on cookery workshops
“From a head teacher’s perspective, it is a cost effective form of outsourcing. Junior Chefs meets every objective of ECM and also covers many elements across the curriculum, including science, art and drama. Most importantly, it’s great fun for the kids and messages are communicated brilliantly. Across all of our year groups the children have loved it.” Moira Williams, Head teacher, William Stockton Primary School
A typical school day will consist of Junior Chefs running four workshops for approximately thirty children. Classes are delivered by a fully qualified chef/lecturer who will arive at your school, and supply all the food and equipment needed for the day, along with an abundance of enthusiasm and expertise. They can cater for all year groups and will organise the day from start to finish, and like true professionals, leave the designated work area spotless upon completion. Their healthy eating classes include a fully hands on cooking experience coupled with interactive games and activities to engage and inspire your pupils’ interest and imagination. Sessions link in with the National Curriculum including the art of; the science of; and even a multicultural look at the process of cooking and food but most importantly they stimulate children’s interest in the health and nutrition aspects of food. Junior Chef’s Academy worked with 22,500 children last year and are hoping to double that number this year, involving over 250 schools across the North West. The reports from primary schools have been glowing and their success figures are testament to the appeal of their product. The levels of repeat business have been absolutely fantastic and they are building strong relationships with many schools. If the success of a Junior Chefs’ session lies in its all singing, all dancing approach, it is perhaps apt that a Michelin starred celebrity chef with his own brand of fancy footwork, Gary Rhodes, has been quick to champion the cause and says. “It’s vitally important that we educate children about the benefits of a healthy, balanced diet and give them the practical skills to achieve it. Through the Junior Chefs Academy these skills can be achieved while having good fun. I have been delighted with the work done by Junior Chefs Academy. They are helping kids to become educated about nutrition, whilst also having lots of fun.”

“I am so impressed that these resources provides everything – even music. Clearly the health education/science is strong enough to stand alone – well done. Health Matters is well devised, thorough and meets a gap in our current provision.” Head Teacher, Shropshire They support the idea of a flexible, creative and active EYFS and curriculum through a cross curricular approach to health and fitness. They believe making links between curriculum subjects and areas of learning they can deepen children’s understanding and make learning about health and fitness a real and exciting experience. The 'Busy Feet' and 'Health Matters' resources are user friendly, fun and accessible and support many of the national agendas facing schools and Early Years settings currently in terms of increasing levels of physical activity and the Health agenda. Their wide range of resources enhances The National Healthy Schools Status and PE - The 5 hour offer. Resources have been piloted over a four year period in schools and preschool settings which has been central to their success as they have then been refined, using the feedback, advice and support of professionals, including PDMs, SSCOs, Headteachers, Early Years practitioner’s, healthy schools, PCTs and the children themselves. Their range of high quality teaching resources offer a ‘whole school’ approach and are designed to be fun, educational and inclusive. They support practitioners’ and teacher’s planning through the use of unique project maps, which show clear links to the new EYFS and national Curriculum. They include a wealth of material that can be used in practical sessions and in the classroom to reinforce learning. Also included are Practitioner’s and Teacher’s books, music CDs, game cards/lesson plans, children’s certificates, a host of learning activity ideas, children’s worksheets (KS2) ideal for homework tasks and CD ROMs bursting with supporting resources. The feedback received from schools and Local Authorities nationally has been overwhelming. They offer individual resource box sets (from £60) for Preschool, Reception, Year 1/2, Year 3/4 or Year 5/6 which contain the high quality resources staff require to ensure confidence in their delivery. They also have sets which offer a whole school approach, i.e. Infant school package, Junior school package and a primary school package. The Primary school package for example, includes all the resource box sets from Reception to Year 5/6 and for a school with 200 pupils amounts to only £1.24 per child.
