About the Library PAGE 22

Letter from the Executive Director It’s been almost a year since many of you joined our strategic planning process by taking part in a community survey. You shared some amazing ideas and feedback with us, especially on how we can help support a lifetime of learning for you and everyone in Schaumburg Township. In our current strategic plan, the “future ready” area of focus encourages exploration, lifelong literacies, sustainability and more to help all of us prepare for the future and live life to its fullest. This portion of our strategic plan includes activities we’re really excited about, like expanding our already popular Library of Things where you can check out board games, laptops, microphones, umbrellas and more; and taking our technology training sessions on the road to senior living facilities and community partners for hands-on training where it’s most convenient for you. It also includes a renovation of the second floor of our Central Library. Our Central Library is nearly 25 years old, and with about 1 million visitors each year... well, let’s just say the carpet up there has seen better days. Also, the needs of our community have changed so much in the last 25 years. Back in 1998 when the Central Library was built, Google had just been founded, the very first MP3 player was released and WiFi didn’t exist yet as we all endured the crazy sounds of dial-up modems. Wow! To be able to support your personal journey of lifelong learning, our spaces need to reflect the current times and anticipate the future. We’re excited for newer technology, flexible spaces and, of course, plenty of informative, educational, authoritative or simply fun books on all the subjects you’re interested in reading about. We look forward to this renovation beginning in the spring of 2023, just after we celebrate our Library’s 60th anniversary of serving our community. We know you already have a lifetime of memories and we want to help create new memories for the future. We’ll share news and updates about this renovation as they are available, and we hope to keep disruptions to a minimum for us all. Keep an eye on our website and our social media channels to stay in the loop. I’ll see you around the Library! Annie Miskewitch Executive Director

ALL AGES READ ALL YEAR LONG “I decided to start the programs for my daughters to show them how many books they actually read,” Amanda said. “We read books every night. Having a reading log to track them helps us all stay accountable, even on weekends when life sometimes gets in the way.”

We all think of libraries for summer reading, but we know you love to read all year long. So why not reward yourself for that reading? Our year-round reading programs help you track your reading, earning prizes along the way! After signing her daughters up for the Summer Challenge each year, Amanda Gloria of Hoffman Estates stumbled on our 500 Books Before 5th Grade program, then one of our librarians recommended she sign her youngest daughter up for 1,001 Books Before Kindergarten.

3

The Gloria family comes to the Library just about every week to show their reading logs to our staff. “I can see how proud they are of their progress as they walk up to the librarian to show them what they accomplished,” Amanda said. Once they get stickers for their logs, it’s off to choose new books to check out. “Currently, my 7-year-old is enjoying the series Unicorn Princesses, and my 6-year-old is reading the series Dragon Girls. Friends and teachers definitely have a big impact on what they

choose to read,” Amanda said. “And I choose books with my 2-year-old based on what’s she interested in that week – colors, animals, potty, numbers.” Cardholders since 2016, the Gloria family really loves our Library. Amanda has even been inspired to read more herself lately. “With three kids to keep track of, it’s hard to stop to find a book for myself,” Amanda said. “The Hot Picks section is great because I can easily find popular books without much effort! I started enjoying reading so much, I actually just started my own book club.” Join the Gloria family in tracking your reading all year long. We have a program for every age group, from expecting parents, to kids and teens, to adults. Get all the program details and register at SchaumburgLibrary. org/read.

CELEBRATE OUR 60TH Big news: our Library turns 60 this September! On September 8, 1962, voters passed a referendum by a vote of 430 to 69 to create their own public library in Schaumburg Township. In the spring of 1963, our Library first opened in a 1,000-square-foot house north of the corner of Roselle and Schaumburg roads. We’ve come a long way since then, but we’re forever grateful to those voters who were eager to have a library for their community. We have a few fun things happening this September to help us all celebrate: Interviews with Trustees Head to SchaumburgLibrary.tv to watch interviews with Library trustees past and present to learn about the history of our Library, the importance of public libraries and much more.

Freebie Fridays Each Friday in September, stop by any Library location for a free item! Our branches will have giveaways like tote bags and pens, and at our Central Library, we’re partnering with area restaurants and businesses for free yummy treats. (Supplies are limited; first come, first served.) Here’s the line-up: Sept. 2: Phat Phat Sept. 9: Taco Maya Sept. 16: Crumbl Cookies Sept. 23: Taco Maya Sept. 30: Fruitful Yield Online Shop Show your love of libraries and sport some Schaumburg Library gear! We’ve created an online shop with t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, pillows, onesies and more. A portion of the proceeds will benefit our programs, collections, spaces and services. Shop today at SchaumburgLibrary.org/shop.

COMMUNITY OFRENDA

This fall, we’re celebrating Hispanic heritage by creating a Community Ofrenda, celebrating Day of the Dead and much more. Join the festivities Oct. 1 - Nov. 2. An ofrenda is a display, sometimes called a memory table, built to honor lost loved ones. Traditional ofrendas are full of symbols, many coming from the long history of the blending of Mexican and Aztec cultures. To bring our community together in a celebration of Hispanic heritage, we’re partnering with local Mexican artist Cristina Colunga to create a Community Ofrenda at each of our Library locations. You can contribute photos of your loved ones to our Community Ofrenda through Nov. 2. Just visit SchaumburgLibrary.org/ community-ofrenda to send us a photo and we’ll add it to the ofrenda. Be sure to stop by all our locations to view each ofrenda and see all the loved ones being honored.

COMMUNITY OFRENDA KICKOFF DROP IN • Central Workshop • Saturday, Oct. 1 • 1-3 p.m. You’ll have a chance to share photos and memories of loved ones, participate in crafts and face painting, and enjoy a dance performance by Grupo Folklorico Quetzal as we launch our Community Ofrenda project to celebrate Hispanic heritage.

DAY OF THE DEAD CELEBRATION (DÍA DE LOS MUERTOS) DROP IN • Central Library • Wednesday, Nov. 2 • 5-7 p.m. Enjoy a dance performance from Center of Peruvian Arts, a bilingual storytime and hands-on crafts! Be sure to sample some pan de muertos and We’ll also be handing out Mexican treats to go, while supplies last.

“I consider our library to be a hub of activity for the community. It does not serve a single purpose, but so many and that is what makes it wonderful.” – Lauren S.

“The Library has made a hugely positive impact on our family.”

CREATING MUSIC AT THE LIBRARY

“I definitely did not think I’d ever create and produce music at all, let alone at my Library,” said 15-year-old Chase of Hoffman Estates. And yet Chase is a standout of our Teen Record Label Project, becoming the first artist to release an album on Spotify through the Library. The Teen Record Label Project was started in the summer of 2019 thanks to a Project Next Generation grant the Library was awarded through the Illinois State Library. It was at that point the Library started working with professional sound engineer Jalen Little to help teens learn audio recording, beat making and more. “I really enjoy enabling students to imagine themselves in a position where they can create the music that they have in their mind,” said Jalen. “The

ultimate joy is seeing students’ faces when they look on a music streaming platform and see their music posted for the world to hear.”

about costs of equipment as the Library’s Digital Production Studio is fully stocked with everything he, and other teens learning to produce music need.

Chase, under the artist name Dr. Airwaves, released his first album The Battle Collection, Vol. 1 on Spotify earlier this year. Thanks to the Library’s record label, any and all proceeds made from streaming the song will go directly to Chase.

“This class will get you far. Jalen is so patient and connects with us teens. He’ll help you get to where you need to be,” Chase said. “And the Library has been very nice and supportive. They even play my music in Teen Place!”

“I actually want to be a writer when I grow up,” Chase said. “My first album correlates to a book I’m writing. The album tracks work on their own, but they’re also kind of a soundtrack to the book.”

“Music is for everybody, and I love that Schaumburg Library provides teens with the space to create and be themselves,” Jalen said.

“When I first met Chase, he was shy yet curious about the process of making music,” Jalen said. “As I helped Chase to learn the music production software and develop his sound, he evolved into a brilliant music producer who is pro active, confident and passionate about making music. Chase has opened up more and will make jokes and allow everyone to feel comfortable and enable others to be themselves just as he is himself.” Chase also didn’t have to worry

SCHAUMBURG TOWNSHIP DISTRICT LIBRARY • SEPTEMBER-NOVEMBER 2022

You can find Chase’s album on Spotify, and Jalen’s on all music platforms under the artist name Obs3rve. Best of all? Our Digital Production Studio is equipped to help you with all your media projects - from making music, to recording a podcast, to using a green screen, to creating a video. It’s available for all ages to reserve and use the equipment to take your next project to the next level. Get more info or make a reservation at SchaumburgLibrary.org or email studio@stdl.org with questions.

CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE Join us Oct. 1 - Nov. 2 as we celebrate Hispanic heritage. We’re partnering with a local artist to create Community Ofrendas at each of our Library locations - these are a traditional way to celebrate the memory of lost loved ones. We’ll also have a Day of the Dead celebration, read books together by Hispanic authors, create crafts inspired by Hispanic culture and much more.
