The conversion allows for space to be renovated for a new band room through Permanent Improvement Funds and the Hawk’s generous donation. Currently, PCHS Band students hold class on the Performing Arts Center stage due to class being held simultaneously with the Orchestra class. The Board of Education recognized the donation at the July 23 board meeting. “Earl E. Warnke instilled the love of music to thousands of students over the years,” said David Belden, board president. “Fondly known as ‘Uncle Earl’ to his students, he not only served as the PCHS Band Director from 1957 until he retired in 1985, Earl was also a Port Clinton High School Alumnus and Vice President of the Class of 1946. “He is sadly missed but his memory will live on as the new band room will bear his name and he will continue to be a part of Port Clinton High School music.” Current PCHS Band Director Rod Miller shared a letter from Bob Dodge, PCHS alumnus and Community Band Member (which Warnke also created and directed) that included numerous comments and memories from PCHS Band Alumni. Construction is currently under way and slated for completion at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year. Additional donations for the new band room in Warnke’s memory are welcome. Tradition grows on Peach season off to a good start By ANGIE ADAIR Editor Peaches are in season and the fuzzy fruit is filling roadside stands and pie shells around the county. The harvest this year is looking good according to local farmers — especially after a cold snap last year destroyed most of the area’s 2009 crop. “We are in pretty good shape,” said Dave Howell, who owns a 22-acre farm on Catawba Island. “Last year was like a complete loss.” Dan Bergman, of Ottawa County’s Bergman Orchards and Market, said 80 percent of the crop was destroyed last year but 2010 is a different story. “The flavor is very good this year,” Bergman said. “The flavor is unmatched almost anywhere in the world.” And it’s that flavor and a location along the lake that has made the peach a popular crop in the area since the 1800s. In fact, according to a story in the Port Clinton News Herald published in 1972, “Catawba Island ranked near the top in the fruit industry in the 1880s and as late as around 1914.” Bergman said his family has been growing the popular crop on the Danbury Peninsula since the 1800s. His mom, Donna Bergman, worked

What do you think? For Dan Bergman, it’s peach pie. For Dave and Janine Howell, it’s peach cobbler. What’s your favorite? Submit your recipes at www.thebeacon.net or find us on Facebook and post them there.

Historically speaking An hour of digging at the Ottawa County Historical Museum reveals a glimpse into the history of peach power in the area: “Actually, Catawba Island ranked near the top of the fruit industry in the 1880s and as late as around 1914. Orchardists here are said to have been the first to undertake control of fruit tree pests by application of chemicals. Growers in the states of New York and California followed close on Ohio’s Catawba Islanders’ methods for control of fruit tree pests.” ~ from “’Soup’ house thing of the past,” Port Clinton News Herald, Jan. 27, 1972 “The soil on Catawba Island was well adapted to other fruits as well as the grape, and a number of apple and peach orchards began to spring up as early as 1875.” Also in the article was a list of products that came from Ca

Great time had by all at I-LYA’s New Bay Week What a great time I had this past weekend participating in the annual I-LYA Sail Regatta at Put-in-Bay. They abandoned the races on Saturday morning when no wind came up, so the regatta was shortened to just two races, one on Friday and one on Sunday. But they were great. However, Saturday afternoon I was “forced” to go uptown with old sailing buddy Scott Holzaepfel to watch a couple more

Where are the mosquitoes?

Although it is now mid-August, I have not seen (or heard) many mosquitoes this year? Are you readers seeing them? Did the hot dry weather in July take away the wet places where they usually multiply? I’m not sure. But I do hear the cicadas every evening now. It sounds like late summer and the sound is wonderful. It hearkens back to childhood and playing outdoors at night when the work was done and the heat of the day started to cool off a bit. nnn

It’s fun to take time to go down to the Sutton Center these days. There is a great new coffee house there and an art gallery has been added to the mix. The artwork exhibited will be coordinated by the Port Clinton Artists Club. Some of it is for sale. Purchases may be made at the coffee shop called Common Grounds. It’s right on the premises. Also, Chris Galvin, executive director of the Ottawa County unit of the United Way, is hosting a Saturday morning radio talk show broadcast from the coffee shop. Chris and her interesting guests discuss all kinds of activities going on around our county. I went down two weeks ago and talked about the County Recorder’s office. The Recorder makes a permanent copy of important real estate documents and Chris had lots of questions to ask about the age of the documents, about their historic value and also about how they are preserved for future generations. She is an interesting conversationalist and it was fun to be interviewed. nnn

The music schedule at the Oak Harbor Log Cabin (downtown in the village of Oak Harbor) is Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30. Take along something to sit on — if you want to sit down — and just enjoy the entertainment. There are still three Sundays left, through Aug. 29. This is a chance to enjoy performances by local vocalists and musicians. nnn

Another very successful local endeavor was raising funds at the auction to benefit the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society. There were 80 auction items plus 20 silent auction items

Late this summer Stein Hospice is opening a resale shop at 126 Columbus Ave. in Sandusky. That’s across the street from the Sandusky State Theatre. A “Meet and Greet” at 7 p.m. on Aug. 10 will introduce the shop to the community. Donations for sales items are now being accepted. Call 1-800-625-5269 or visit www.steinhospice.org. nnn

Have you ever wondered how to cook in a fireplace? If so, there will be a demonstration you will want to see at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 25. “Hearth Cooking” will take place at the Keeper’s House, 9999 E. Bayshore Road, Marblehead. A potluck meal featuring some of the hearth-cooked foods follows at 5 p.m. You’re invited. But please call 419-797-2244 and make a reservation with Nancy Dunham. Tableware, beverages and meat (ham) will be provided. Take along your special dish and enjoy the food and company. nnn

I didn’t have an opportunity to see the “new” Island House Restaurant and Inn the last time I was on Kelleys Island, but I keep hearing about it. Recently I have been doing a bit of research into stress and tension. I was not aware that so many people are afflicted with an overload of stress but “The Well Workplace” newsletter observed in its April 2009 edition that not only is it a major health problem in our country but also that one-third of Americans are living with extreme stress. A little bit of stress or tension probably won’t hurt you but if you have stress over the long-term it can make you sick, even to including heart disease. More common results are fatigue and obesity or unhealthy dependence on alcohol or drugs to try to keep the stress at bay. If you feel stressed here are some things that may help you: • Recognize your own indicators such as headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, apathy, anger, lack of energy or other signs. If you know you are stressed you may be able to do something about it right then. • Try to determine when your stress occurs. Is it brought on by certain people, by work situations, by certain events or incidents? If so, what can you do to avoid those stressors? It is worth the time to find out what is troubling you and then to get away from it. • Relaxation exercises, meditation, yoga and physical exercise may be of help. Also try to eat right (and eat more slowly) and drink plenty of water. • Give yourself a break. Listen to some music. Read a book. Take a walk. Go to a movie. • Don’t be embarrassed to accept help from friends or professionals if you need it. • Be less of a perfectionist. Realize you’re not perfect and never will be, so don’t try to be. We are all flawed individuals. Do what you can on a project, job, relationship or whatever. Then walk away from it. • Accept that some people will always be your critics. And criticism hurts and produces stress. Try to brush it off or walk away from it and then let it go mentally, too. • Stay away from people who “bug” you. Are they negative, pessimistic, critical or demeaning? You don’t need them in your life. And even if they are relatives and you can’t walk away, you can find ways to minimize their influence over you. Again, a professional counselor can help with that. • Relax. Unwind. Enjoy the rest of summer! And the rest of your life.

First Tee auction is Aug. 29 The First Tee of Lake Erie is holding its annual dinner, dance and auction to raise money for Life Skills Programming. The event — at 4 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Fremont Country Club — is run by committee members and many volunteers. The evening begins with silent and Chinese auctions with many exciting items. Live music from the band Cruisin, dinner and a live auction caps off the evening. In addition to being a major fundraiser, the auction offers a way for First Tee to introduce itself to people in the area. According to its website, “The First Tee of Lake Erie is a nonprofit youth development organization with the vision to provide the vehicle through which kids can accomplish their dreams, thrive socially, excel academically and athletically, and become productive members of society with integrity, strong family

values and a commitment to community.” Oak Harbor is the organizations main facility with affiliate sites at Eagle Creek in Norwalk, Keys in Perkins, Fremont Country Club in Fremont and Crosswinds in Perrysburg. For the auction, a catalog will be available on First Tee’s website, www. thefirstteelakeerie.org, detailing items for bid. During the Chinese Auction, participants buy a certain number of tickets for a set price, then use those tickets to “bid” on a variety of donated items. Rather than going to the highest bidder, though, as it would at a regular auction, the item goes to the person whose ticket is drawn, at random, from the container. During the Silent Auction, guests have the opportunity to view dozens of auction items and a bid is met by a guest, then that guest receives that

item. On all other items, guests can bid as many times as they wish, as often as they wish until that category of items closes. Whoever is left with the last and highest bid receives that item. Auction items typically include anything from sporting tickets to exotic trips, landscaping services to rare wines, gift baskets to exquisite jewelry, cooking classes to dinners at fine restaurants. There is something for everyone, from small to large. When the Chinese and Silent Auctions close, guests enjoy a seated dinner in an environment transformed by creative auction volunteers. The band will take over for a while until a professional auctioneer announces the Chinese and Silent auction winners and emcees the Live Auction. For tickets — which are $50 — call 877-517-8833 or email credmond@ thefirstteelakeerie.org

There is no limit on the number of times you can vote. The contest is part of a partnership between the National Park Foundation, the official charity of America’s national parks, and Coca-Cola. In addition to the grant, Coke is matching donations made to the National Park

Foundation at www.livepositively. com, up to $25,000. “After my many years in the Park Service, I have come to learn that all parks are special places to be cherished by Americans. However, Perry’s Victory will always have a special place in my heart and in American history as the only international peace memorial in the National Park Service,” said Blanca Alvarez Stransky, Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial Superintendent. “This is a great opportunity for our

visitors, the local community and our park partners who love this place as much as we do to vote their feelings. If Perry’s Victory is fortunate enough to win, the $100,000 will allow us to expand our educational programs and provide innovative learning experiences for children of all ages,” added Stransky. Perry’s Victory is one of 392 national parks across the country. Learn more about your favorite park — or explore a new one — on the National Park Service’s website, www.nps.gov.

Ohler & Holzhauer Financial Focus celebrates TOD can reduce hassles for heirs 95 years

with GARY COON

Among the reasons you work hard all your life may be so you can leave something to your children, grandchildren or other family members. So, naturally, you’d like to make it as easy as possible for your heirs to take possession of those assets you want them to have. And that’s why you may want to consider establishing a Transfer on Death agreement on certain accounts. Once you’ve established a TOD agreement for your account, ownership of the assets held in that account pass directly to the designated beneficiaries, bypassing probate. Why is this important? Because probate has three major drawbacks: • It’s time-consuming. If your estate has to go through the probate process, it could easily take a year or more for your assets to be distributed to your heirs. • It’s expensive. Attorney and court fees could devour up to 5% of your estate’s value —

PORT CLINTON — Ohler & Holzhauer is celebrating its 95th year in business with an open house. The local company, which was recently welcomed into the Carrier family, will be open to the public from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14. According to Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX), Ohler & Holzhauer will carry a full range of Carrier’s residential heating, ventilation and air-conditioning products. “We are excited to welcome Ohler & Holzhauer to the Carrier family,” said Rick Sanfrey, president of Carrier Residential North America. “Carrier dealers are noted for their ability to provide personal follow-up and quick, knowledgeable solutions to home comfort problems. They also stay ahead of the industry by utilizing specialized training they receive through Carrier University. Ohler & Holzhauer will be a strong addition to our nationwide group of core dealers.” Ohler & Holzhauer is a family-run company celebrating 95 years of business, employing 12 and servicing the Port Clinton area with seven fully stocked service trucks. “Reaching out to our existing customers, providing exceptional customer service and expanding our customer base is our number one goal,” said owner Dave Dubbert. For information about Ohler & Holzhauer, call 419-732-2121. For information on Carrier and Carrier products, visit www.carrier.com.

which means fewer assets going to your loved ones. • It’s public. The probate process is open to everyone. This means anyone can obtain a copy of your will, the names and contact information for your heirs, the inventory of assets and other documents filed as part of the probate proceeding. As you can see, you’ve got some good reasons to avoid probate — and a TOD agreement can help. Of course, a TOD agreement can’t meet all your estate-planning needs. While it may be particularly useful in helping you bequeath specific financial assets, such as stocks, bonds and other assets held in your brokerage accounts, it can’t help you deal with estate taxes or address other complex estate-planning issues. And that’s why you also may want to consider creating other estate-planning tools, such as a

revocable living trust. Similar to a TOD agreement, a revocable living trust allows you to leave assets to your heirs without going through probate. Furthermore, when you set up a revocable living trust, you can control your assets during your lifetime and determine how they will eventually be distributed to your heirs. You could, for example, have money distributed to your children or grandchildren in installments, over a period of years. Many people like having this ability, especially if they are unsure of the money management skills or maturity level of their heirs. Plus, a properly established revocable living trust will carry out your wishes if you become incapacitated. Be sure to consult with your legal advisor to see if a revocable living trust is appropriate for you. While a TOD agreement can’t take the place of all estate-plan-

ning tools, it can complement them. And a TOD agreement offers another feature that can prove valuable: flexibility. Specifically, you can revoke or modify your TOD agreement at any time in response to changes in your life or family circumstances. To determine if a TOD agreement is appropriate for your needs, contact your tax advisor or legal professional. It’s taken you many years to accumulate your assets, so take some time to help ensure they end up where you want them to go. nnn

FIRELANDS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER

Family visits doc who saved son’s life

Then 1-year-old Erik Knotts came down with a potentially fatal disease while in Lakeside for annual church convention SANDUSKY — Erik Knotts of Cleveland is an active, 11-yearold boy. He likes to play hockey, golf and read. He is going to be in the sixth grade and his mother will proudly tell you that Erik earns straight A’s in school. But roughly 10 years ago, his parents, Brian and Kristine, noticed their son was becoming ill. The family was in Lakeside at the time for an annual United Methodist Church conference. “I knew he was sick, but I wasn’t sure how bad,” Kristine said. “I called our pediatrician. She told me to get him to a hospital right away. I looked in the yellow pages

and found Firelands Regional Medical Center.” The Knotts family quickly loaded up the car and headed to the emergency room at Firelands where physician Edward Radatz took a look at little Erik, who at the time was just a year old. Radatz said that Erik had a purple polka-dot rash all over his body that progressively got worse. After assessing the boy, Radatz diagnosed Erik with meningiococcemia, which is basically meningitis-type infection throughout the entire body. Typically meningitis affects only the brain. “It is a total body shutdown,”

Radatz said of the type of meningitis Erik had. “It shuts down blood supply to the extremities. He could have easily died.” Erik was given medication to open up the blood flow and was then taken by Life Flight to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland where he spent 62 days in the pediatric intensive care unit. As a result of the meningitis, Erik ended up having both legs amputated, but is a normal, active young boy, his mother said. Kristine credits Radatz and the immediate care he received at Firelands for Erik’s full recovery.

“The right diagnosis and antibiotic saved (Erik’s) life,” Kristine said as she lovingly looked at her son. The Knotts family recently paid Radatz a visit on the 10th anniversary of when Erik came into the emergency room at Firelands. “We worked as a team,” he said modestly about saving Erik’s life. “The care of everyone involved and a lot of prayers gave them their child back.” For information about Firelands, go to firelands.com or find it on Facebook at facebook.com/ FirelandsRegionalMedicalCenter.

donors needed

The American Red Cross Western Lake Erie Blood Services Region has an urgent need for blood donors. Every 2 seconds, someone in America needs blood. The need is constant but the number of people who doBlood drives nate, particularly • Noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, during the sumat St. John United Church of Christ, mer trauma sea1213 Washington, Genoa. son months, often declines. • Noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, This July the loat St. John United Church of Christ, cal American Red 448 E. Rice, Elmore. Cross has seen an 11 percent dip in blood donations which represents about 620 donations. All blood types are needed but currently donors of types O-negative, A-negative and B-negative are needed most. “It’s easy to forget that blood is needed every day,” said Annie Marckel, communications manager for the Western Lake Erie Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. “But you never know who might need blood or when. By giving now, you can help make sure blood is there for anyone who might need it, maybe even someone you know.” Several reasons contribute to a decrease in donations during the summer. Colleges and high schools are no longer in session. Approximately 20 percent of the blood donated in the Western Lake Erie Region comes from college and high school students who are on summer break and are not giving through regularly scheduled blood drives. An increase in vacations and outdoor activities can also keep people from taking the time to donate blood. And even the summer heat can keep people indoors and away from giving blood. “If you have never given before, now is the time to try,” said Marckel. “After you give blood you will receive a blood donor card with your blood type information, too.” The Red Cross holds blood drives across the Western Lake Erie Region every day to meet the needs of patients at 24 area hospitals. Those who come to donate blood now through Sept. 26 can enter to win a Harley-Davidson Sportster from Napoleon Harley-Davidson. For information on upcoming events and how to donate, call 1-800-828-1975.

The 16th annual Stein Hospice Charity Golf Classic will be held Wednesday, Sept. 1, at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Norwalk. Shotgun start is 1 p.m. Registration is $200 per player, which includes a pair of FootJoy golf shoes, green fees, cart, practice balls, lunch, dinner, entertainment and auction. Every third year of the classic, players receive a free pair of FootJoy shoes, choosing from nine different styles. The on-course lunch includes hamburgers from Smith’s and Berardi french fries, with the island-themed dinner catered by Zinc Brasserie, Marconi’s Italian Restaurant and Mesenburg Catering. Guests can attend dinner for an additional $30. The Stein Hospice Charity Golf Classic is a major fundraising event and has raised nearly $500,000 in all since 1994. This year’s goal is to surpass the half-million-dollar mark. “While the event is a big fundraiser, it is also a fellowship and gathering of those who support or have been affected by Stein. It is a celebration of life,” said W. Taylor Hart, Stein Hospice board member. Taylor is co-chairing the event with Jeff Tinker, Maple City Rubber. Registration ends Aug. 16 or when the field is full. The field is limited to 30 teams. Sponsorship opportunities begin at $300. All proceeds from the event will support Stein Hospice, a not-for-profit agency serving patients and families in Erie, Huron, Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca and Lorain counties. Stein provides care to all eligible patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Last year, Stein Hospice provided nearly $700,000 in medical care to patients who were uninsured. Golfers can register online at www.steinhospice.org or contact Julie Yeager at 419-625-5269 or jyeager@steinhospice.org.

Scholarship sends local to Germany NEW YORK — Michelle Hablitzel, a student at Port Clinton High School, has been awarded the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship, which covers a year of study and cultural immersion in G e r m a n y. M i c h e l l e HABLITZEL was one of only 50 students chosen to receive this award, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by AFS, a worldwide nonprofit high school student exchange organization. Michelle will serve as a Youth Ambassador from the United States while participating in special educational, cultural and political events, including receptions and meetings with both German and American government officials. The Congress-Bundestag program begins with a pre-departure orientation in Washington, D.C., this September, where Michelle will visit her representative to Congress, Marcy Kaptur,

and participate in a diplomacy workshop with other scholarship winners organized by the U.S. Department of State, whose Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs supports CBYX. While in Germany, Michelle will gain first-hand experience of German life and culture by living with a host family, attending high school and participating in the community. The purpose of the scholarship program, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Congress and the German Bundestag, is to strengthen the U.S.-German relationship through ties of friendship and cultural understanding. AFS-USA has year, semester and summer programs for high school students in 42 countries around the world, with special programs for graduates 18-24. In addition to sending students abroad, AFS-USA welcomes approximately 2,500 outstanding students from other countries into communities across the United States every year. Friday Night

Theater tickets limited It is dinner theater time again at The Garden Guest Dinner Theater, and Brenda BouSliman has arranged for the Los Angeles professional cast of the hit play, “Polyester The Musical”, to come to the theater. This was all done by the help of the show’s writer, Phil Olson. Olson is the writer of the popular Don’t Hug Me series. Musical score was done by Wayland Pickard. “Polyester The Musical” is the story about the Synchronistics, an over the hill ABBA wannabe group, who reunite to perform at a “save the public access” TV station telethon. It’s “Mamma Mia” meets “Spinal Tap.” In 1979, the Synchronistics were big, really big- big enough to be on Johnny Carson. Their hit single, “Better Together,” had risen to No. 2 on the Billboard charts. Then something terrible happened that drove the group apart. And now, 20 years later, they’re back together to perform at the WKLN public access TV station telethon. Will they overcome their differences, act

professionally and help save WKLN from going under? Probably not. But, you never know what to expect when this dysfunctional group gets together one last time. The world premier of this musical took place in November 2009 in Los Angeles and features 16 original songs including, “The Funk Train” and “Bump Your Booty Rump.” The cast will include, Pamela Donnelly (One Life To Live and All My Children); Christopher Fairbanks (House, Medium, Jimmy Kimmel Live and many others); Gwendolyn Druyor (Appeared in the award winning children’s video, “That’s How We Build a House”); Robert Moon (The Sound of Music, Miss Saigon, and Jekyll and Hyde); and Jim Staahl (Second City Theater, the Tonight Show, Mork and Mindy, King of Queens, Max Dugan Returns, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and many others). Jim Staahl is an Emmy nominated member of the Writers Guild and has written numerous features and sitcoms, as well as some of your favorite Saturday morning cartoon NIGHTLY SPECIALS shows. The finest and freshest steak & seafood available!

To the citizens of Port Clinton and the surrounding area, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who have wished us well and have welcomed us to Port Clinton. I have met a number of fine people in this community and have definitely made some new friends. The Island House Restaurant and Lounge was built by Conrad Gernhard in the year 1886 and some of its history is displayed in detail in the rear foyer of the hotel. In the past, such notables as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Clark Gable, Joe DiMaggio, General Douglass MacArthur, Bob Dylan, and three United States Presidents have graced the Island House with their presence. As you know the Island House Restaurant and Lounge has undergone many changes in the past few years. We come to this area with the acknowledgment of this restaurant’s rich history and we want to return it to its former high level of service and value for your community. We welcome your input, and encourage you to suggest how we might make your visit with us more enjoyable. We will be adjusting the menu and staff as warranted. We ask for your patience while we make these adjustments and most importantly, we ask for your business to bring the Island House Restaurant and Lounge to its full potential for your future dining pleasure. If you’ve made reservations for

the upcoming year, it is important to call our reservation desk (419-734-9271) to confirm the date and time of your event. Thank you, and with highest regards,

Donna S. Smith
