HAGEN

IN NEW ORLEANS

Nothing makes me happier than traveling the globe. I am most comfortable when completely out of my natural New York City habitat. Getting seriously lost in a Mumbai market, stumbling on the coolest sneaker store in Tokyo, trying to find vintage Persols in Cairo—all of these moments have been memorable. And I still have the thick-framed 1967

IN GIZA

Persols to remind me how much I adore Egypt. Just recently, I flew to Cape Town, South Africa (see page 40). Nelson Mandela had died that same day, and I chucked my luggage in my room at the One&Only Cape Town and trekked to the Robben Island Museum, which tells the story of Mandela's heroic fight against apartheid and his 18-year imprisonment on Robben Island. After that fast history lesson, I found a busy market, got totally lost, yet found the coolest African fabric with Mandela's smiling face on it. The above photos are my #TBTs (hashtag for Throw Back Travel) from trips to amazing places like China, Denmark and Louisiana. For our travel issue, we sent writers to Colombia, the Philippines and the Dominican Republic. We also had some of our friends, like Donna Karan, menswear designer Todd Snyder, and Rande Gerber and Cindy Crawford, share their personal photos from trips all over the world. You'll be wanderlusting from pictures of India, Africa, Mexico and beyond. My bags are already packed and in the lobby. Speaking of taking off, our cover guy, 22-year-old actor Logan Lerman, has been jetting around the planet starring in movies with Russell Crowe and Brad Pitt. Lerman, who was photographed by Elias Tahan, in his hometown of Los Angeles, is a star on the rise. In New York, you can be a star of sorts at the over-the-top interactive nightlife extravaganza Queen of the Night. Laura C. Mallonee (who just joined the SCENE team) gives us the rundown on the decadent, glamorous show that makes even Broadway blush. So if you don't have time to book a flight to try Bogotá’s newest hot spot Gordo, reserve a ticket for nonstop party fun at Queen of the Night, which is truly a world-class escape. lobby of the Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles

tinseltown gets an urban edge Text by shontel horne The Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, located at the former home of Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford’s United Artists headquarters, stars in L.A.’s latest hospitality show. The 182-room property and adjoining theater flawlessly display the Ace’s signature site-specific charm and understated, artist-driven style. The space defies L.A.’s oft-luxurious hotel convention in nearly every way, opting instead for a refreshing, less-is-more approach in both concept and execution. Instead of pricey portraits and blue-chip artwork, the lobby and restaurant walls are flanked with L.A.-themed, hand-drawn sketches by local artists. Each guest room reads more like your first grown-up apartment than temporary lodging, inviting visitors to foster their creativity. Drawing inspiration from Austrian architect Rudolph Schindler’s West Hollywood home, the modern rooms come decked with cozy Pendleton blankets, handcrafted Noguchi lamps and a functioning record player complete with vinyl supplied by Amoeba Music. If the menu at the hotel’s lone restaurant looks familiar, it should: The Ace turned to Jud Mongell of Brooklyn’s Five Leaves for the eatery dubbed LA Chapter, marking Mongell’s first restaurant in California. Don’t think for a second the West Coast outpost mirrors its predecessor: Aside from the signature Five Leaves burger, LA Chapter’s offerings are purely Californian, with signature cocktails and dishes that make the most of regional produce like the avocado toast and the grapefruit brûlée. What the property lacks in grandeur in the main tower, it more than makes up for in the ornate United Artists Theatre, where the original murals have been restored and the theater seats have been carefully upholstered. The venue is already a favorite for postaward show parties and concerts, and Black Swan choreographer Benjamin Millepied has signed up to make the 1927 theater home to his L.A. Dance Project performances.

swept away a parisian escape in the heart of downtown nyc Text by Laura c. mallonee Getting out of New York for the weekend used to mean driving to an upstate bedand-breakfast or unwinding in the Hamptons, but with the newly opened Broome Hotel, you need only venture to bustling Soho for some R&R. ace hotel photo by Spencer Lowell courtesy of Ace Hotel; broome hotel photo by Douglas Lyle Thompson

Photos courtesy of Fontainebleau Miami Beach

Housed at 431 Broome Street in a Federal Revival brownstone, the boutique hotel’s five floors and 14 private chambers are arranged around a seclusive atrium that shuts out the city rush. During a recent visit, my room looked out on that Moroccan-tiled courtyard, its heat lamps illuminating red bistro chairs and a vintage foosball table beneath the fronds of a palm tree. The furniture (by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams) hearkened to the 1960s without feeling like a period set—a tufted, gray headboard and green velvet chair adding just the right touch of French chic. Soundproof walls further convinced me I’d left the city behind, as not so much as a taxi's horn could be heard. Sinking into the plush, queen bed and soft Bellino sheets, I silently thanked the hotel’s owners—Soho denizen Vincent Boitier and brothers Jean-Claude and Stephane Iacovelli—who bought the nearly 200-year-old building in 2006. For the past 20 years, they’ve brought their stylish joie de vivre to the neighborhood hotel's interior courtyard

primarily through restaurants like Fiat Café and Soho Steak. The Broome is the trio’s first foray into hospitality, and it seems to have been a wise one. 35

this boutique retreat proves the grass is greener on the other side Text by Eliza Krpoyan There is no shortage of greenery at the Hotel La Catalina. Tucked in the lush landscape just outside the small town of Cabrera in the Dominican Republic is this tranquil, family-owned hotel. Replete with coconut palms, white sands, coral formations and cliffs, this hideaway serves up expansive views from a choice of 12 hotel rooms or 14 condos. Attracting both locals and visitors alike, the getaway is perched on a mountainside just 15 minutes from the picturesque Playa Grande Beach. A newly remodeled open-a ir restaurant and bar on the premises offers a mostly local menu—think lobster, shrimp and mahi-mahi—with vegetables and spices picked from the property’s own organic garden. Visitors can also find vendors on the beach who prepare traditional Dominican fare like fried plantains and fresh fish. The intimate hotel also offers space for a meditative retreat amid its tropical gardens. While their isn't an on-site yogi, guests can still find their center at a yoga studio equipped with mats or, for a more adventurous vacation, partake in nearby activities like horseback riding, surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and hiking to the island’s waterfalls. But mostly to get to Boracay Island, where you'll find one of the best beaches in the world. The appropriately named Shangri-La resort, situated on a hillside overlooking the ocean from the northern tip of the island, is one of the most sophisticated and luxurious hotels in the world. It's characterized by an immaculate private beachfront, stylish and elegant villas, impressive service, spectacular views and delicious food; you’ll need a magnifying glass to find something wrong. Because the secluded resort is set apart from the rest of the island, it offers an immediate feeling of refuge. Staying in one of its spectacular tree-house villas, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa at night

Fourth quarter closings were lower than a year ago, due to the surge of high-end closings last year (due to tax-law changes) and the reduction in inventory. Both the average and median price were lower than fourth quarter ’12 because of the high-end closings last year. Inventory remained tight, with 18 percent fewer apartments for sale in Manhattan than a year ago. The absorption rate is a measure of how long it would take to sell all the apartments on the market at the current pace of sales. An absorption rate below six months is a sign of a seller’s market. A sharp decline in the number of available apartments and strong buyer demand have brought the rate down to just 3.1 months from 4.9 months a year ago, a 33 percent decline. The west side and Downtown have the lowest levels in inventory, as their absorption rates are less than three months. Upper Manhattan has seen the biggest decline in its absorption rate over the past year.

150 East 72nd Street Located at 72nd Street and Lexington Avenue, this 100-year-old, 12-story property is emblematic of the evolution of the Upper East Side. The building’s entry, lobby, amenities and shared areas have been reenvisioned for contemporary living while continuing to uphold its prewar charm. The building offers 24-hour white-glove service and includes a fitness center, children’s playroom and multifunction room. The address boasts accessibility to Central Park and nearby museums and galleries. The residence features a series of two- and fourbedroom condominiums, with private entrances via elevator. The interiors are an intermingling of the classic and the contemporary—think high ceilings and decorative oak flooring. The bathrooms feature Calacatta marble, custom vanities, glass-enclosed showers, soaking tubs, heated floors and chrome fixtures, and the kitchens feature a butler’s pantry, limestone floors, marble countertops, Franke sinks and Miele appliances. Also available is the North Penthouse, perhaps, the gem of 150 East 72nd Street, replete with four bedrooms and six-and-a-half bathrooms, as well as a 2,500-square-foot terrace and a private entrance by elevator. The condominium is filled with natural light—the eat-in kitchen features a skylight and windows—and its amenities are state-of-the-art.

Above the Clouds

Stowe, Vermont $6,900,000. www.abovethecloudsvt.com

Rarely is such efficiency and ease of living offered in concert with such elegant design and breathtaking natural beauty. This gem is located in Stowe, Vermont, an internationally recognized setting for those seeking outdoor activities and majestic natural beauty. Stowe is located within close proximity to New York, Boston & Montreal, and offers classic New England charm … centered on a white steeple church, where residents greet each other and visitors with the same warmth. The beauty of the natural rock formations and the stunning mountain views which rise from the valley below, celebrate an art form no man could create.

Upon entering the residence, you are impressed by the stunning blend of sophistication and style. The interior of the main living level is flanked by two wings – the east wing is entirely dedicated to the master suite, complete with anteroom, fitness center and a spacious bathroom carved from Statuario marble. The west wing houses the library, lined with black walnut throughout, offices

and utilitarian areas which abound with modern and efficient appliances. Between the east and west wings sits the great room – a sunken affair shaped like the Steinway Grand Piano that graces one corner. The entertainment level includes a studio-quality theater with seating for 18, suitable for premier performances or a cozy movie night with friends. Opening to the mezzanine, a crescent shaped bar sits ready to serve the inviting conversation area which includes a wood-burning fireplace, billiard area, and other game tables. The inviting atmosphere continues into an exceptional indoor pool with marble surround, cascading waterfall and spa facilities. This welcoming property is a tribute to the vision of the owners and their desire to combine classic refinement and spectacular beauty with uncomplicated living. As one would expect from a home barely 10 years old and of such intelligent design; the contemporary systems, from touch-screen control panels to an on-demand snow melt system, make the pure “ease of ownership” undeniable.

Dear Annelise

How do I stop my guy from being a complete social media rat? It’s becoming a real frustration to see him on Facebook when we are out to dinner or to find him picking a filter for an Instagram shot of his latest cheeseburger. Dear Ms. Minnie Bringing the Walt Disney mouse back to your 21st-century house will take a little education. Instead of explaining, perhaps a little training using oldfashioned techniques of suggestion will produce the desired effect. Instead of a Thursday night at a Cinema Society screening, welcome your man home from work with a glass of whiskey, a home-cooked meal and a Steve McQueen classic. If he picks up his iPhone to Instagram his introduction to old-fashioned entertainment, sweetly suggest a little mystery in your relationship. "Would the King of Cool want the world to know what he had for dinner?" How can he deny a little privacy when you have gone the extra mile to seduce with Camembert and wine? Surely, your mouse will understand that every Minnie prefers a handsome Mickey over a social media-addicted rat. With a little inspiration and patience on your end, you may be able to train your man to walk like McQueen as you wear (Alexander) McQueen, becoming the talk of the town versus an Instagram feed. annelise peterson

Dear Lady Lydia Sounds like you want to interpret "black tie" with bows rather than in the traditional sense. Given the classic setting at the Pierre hotel, I suggest you take a more traditional role in this Upper East Side affair and dress from head to toe for the occasion—meaning in a full-length gown. Now that we have decided that a sexy LBD is too short to make the Saturday night cut, let's figure out how to dress Lydia like an elegant lady. Without personally escorting you to Bergdorf, here are a few suggestions for selecting the perfect frock for this regal fete. 1) Understated elegance always gets the right kind of attention. It also allows you to wear your investment in your wardrobe more than once. 2) Lanvin, Vionnet and Rouland Mouret offer full-length silhouettes that flatter most body types. 3) Net-A-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman and Barneys all offer personal shopping services to simplify your search and give you confidence in your choice of attire. And last of all, don't forget to wear your best accessory: a smile.

dear Annelise i have a black-tie wedding at The Pierre this weekend and was wondering: Is it o.k. to wear a knee-length black dress? Its back is a ribbon, so it’s a little sexy but still super basic black. 102

Dear Citi Bikers Welcome to the exciting world of big city pedal-pushing. Since Citi Bikes hit Gotham last May, I’m sure you’ve been finding that it’s not only a lovely way to get around, but it’s also fun, great exercise and way cheaper than cabs. I’ve been riding a bike for decades, loving the chance to get everywhere on time, while also pumping endorphins that make drugs utterly unnecessary. And the whole time, biking gives me the chance to check out changes in the city, catch up with old friends I run into and ogle fascinating strangers. It’s actually good for my work and my personal life! I can’t imagine any other way to transport myself—subways are an aesthetic challenge—and it’s nice to see swarms of other bikers joining me in one of New York’s most joyous activities, taking to the streets like a pack of emperor penguins just learning how to walk. But let me put the brakes on my warm feelings right there and tell you you’re basically a bunch of wusses! Where were you all those years when it was just me, Anderson Cooper, Bill Cunningham and a handful of others realizing the wonders of city biking? It was never that hard to figure out that a bike was as vital a belonging for any mobile New Yorker as an apartment or a rich partner. I’m well aware that in the last few years, Michael Bloomberg added a bunch of bike lanes that have made things safer for riders, but still, I managed to scoot around for eons before that and was amazed at the virtual monopoly I had on the road since everyone else was mortally terrified to participate in what they viewed as a real-life video game. But put a bunch of shiny bikes on racks, and market them as the hot new thing, and people line up like sheep, suddenly interested in biking as if it were the new quinoa sandwich. I thought New Yorkers were supposed to be wildly individualistic and immune to being force-fed mass trends. We’re always griping about how the city has lost its edge and become too generic, but give people a bandwagon to jump onto, and they’re there as surely as there’ll be another chain restaurant replacing the deli on your corner faster than you can get a Groupon. All of the natives whose favorite word is “ownership” are suddenly engaging in bike sharing, paying $95 per year for unlimited 45-minute rides on someone else’s bike. Guess what, kids? I have unlimited 24-hour rides, and they’re free, since the bike is already paid for! And it’s mine! “But it’s so convenient,” crow the Citi Bikers, exuding a pioneer’s brio. Really? You have to walk to a bike station to get your vehicle! (The nearest one from my house happens to be four annoying blocks away.) Or maybe should you take a cab there? Oh, and when you’re through with your trip, you have to find another bike station, then somehow get yourself home. Another cab? Or maybe you can share a horse-drawn carriage before they get outlawed? Don’t you know that it’s quite feasible to own your very own bicycle? You don’t have to spring for a state-of-the-art piece of equipment that will spiral you into bankruptcy. Kmart has perfectly fine bikes, and the last time I looked, one was on sale for $79! (Yes, it’s a chain store, but you might as well take advantage of it for the rare items that will keep you edgy.) “But I have no place in my apartment for such a thing,” you inevitably gripe. Well, you’d be surprised at how effortlessly a bike can be hanged from or leaned against a wall. There’s room! And if you think it’s just too hideous for your feng shui needs, then why were you so covetous of it in the first place? Besides, you can always leave it on the street, chained to a pole or rack on your block. “But it’ll get stolen,” you then whine. No, probably not. Even the most desperate crack addicts don’t want that Kmart bike (as delightful as If you insist on sticking with Citi Bikes, then I guess I can’t stop you—I can only beg you to ride responsibly. Being part of a fabulous trend doesn’t entitle you to be hell on wheels. Enjoy! Love you! Stay away! Michael Musto

it is). And if it is stolen, you can simply get another one for $79—and it’s all yours!
