SIx suspected UFOs were captured in two astonishing snaps taken in neighbouring counties. The sightings — looking remarkably similar — were just 30 miles apart in the Uk’s UFO hotspot. Close encounter No1 came in Chatham, kent, as Ernestas Griksas, 21, snapped a cherry-picker outside his window.

Close encounter No2 was last Friday at 7am when Josh Cummins spotted four bright objects hovering in pairs as he drove to work through Loughton, Essex. ”I wasn’t a believer in UFOs but this made me think again.” Expert Nick Pope said: “The South East is now the hotspot for UFO sightings.”

Wanstead based men’s designer store, Santa Fe, has been nominated in Drapers Magazine’s “Inspiring Independents” 2012 poll for the Top 100 independent boutiques in the country, as voted for by their readers. Drapers is the trade magazine for the fashion

In January, it was the turn of Woodford Broadway’s Chinese Restaurant, The White Swan, to host the Mayor of Redbridge’s monthly “Come Dine with the Mayor” dinner. As with previous dinners, It was in aid of the Multiple Sclerosis

Society and Newbridge School. Previous Mayor and Mayoress of Redbridge, Jim and Mary O’Shea, joined current Mayor, Chris Cummins, for the Chinese banquet, with proceeds going towards both charities.

She’s the woman at the forefront of the iconic image we have all seen and been mesmerised by. Those big dark eyes, perfectly pinned hair and elegantly-gloved hand – Audrey Hepburn was one of the world’s most notable actresses in Hollywood. And today, nearly 20 years after her death, her romantic illustration from Breakfast at Tiffany’s still lives on. “I have learnt how to live…how to be in the world and of the world, and not just to stand aside and watch.” Hepburn may have been a luminous Hollywood actress but her caring and generous humanitarian work, shaped by her experiences during the Second World War, meant she left behind a lasting legacy. With a career spanning five decades, Hepburn played a variety of roles in nearly 30 motion pictures and her astounding ability to capture the hearts of film directors, writers and audiences landed her 14 awards including a Tony, BAFTA and Golden Globe. But Hepburn wasn’t just an actress – she was an icon for film and fashion of the 20th century. Many of the famous styles she donned back in the 1950s are still around today, on the High Street and still influencing fashion designers the world over. But where did this well-spoken, thoughtful and intelligent woman come from? Born in Brussels in 1929 she spent her childhood between Belgium, England and the Netherlands. With her mother, she even spent time in Kent, England, before fleeing to German-occupied Arnhem during the Second World War. A lover of ballet, Hepburn studied the art before moving to London in 1948 where she continued to train before going on to perform as a chorus girl in various West End musical theatre productions.

After being spotted on stage she appeared in several British films and starred in the 1951 Broadway play Gigi and then gaining Hollywood stardom for her leading role in Academy Award-winning film Roman Holiday. Later performing in Sabrine (1954),The Nun’s Story (1959),Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961),Charade(1963), My Fair Lady(1964) and Wait Until Dark (1967), Hepburn became one of the great screen actresses of Hollywood’s Golden Age, receiving Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and accruing a Tony Award for her theatrical performance in the Broadway play Ondine. But Hepburn wasn’t all work, work, work. She was keen to fall in love and have a family, and it was with American actor Mel Ferrer that she married, just eight months after meeting him. After two miscarriages – one caused after she fell off a horse while filming The Unforgiven – Hepburn finally gave birth to their son Sean. Fourteen years later her marriage ended and she was won over by Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti. Aged 40, Hepburn gave birth to Dotti’s son, Luca, and the pair were married for 13 years. It was over the last decade of her life, before she died of appendiceal cancer aged 63, that she was romantically involved with Dutch actor Robert Wolders. Hepburn’s legacy as an actress and a personality has endured long after her death. The American Film Institute named Hepburn third among the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.

Through her later years and while raising her family, although she appeared in fewer films, Hepburn devoted much of her life to UNICEF. The actress’s war-time struggles had ignited a flame inside her to help others and she actively carried out humanitarian actions, working in some of the most disadvantaged communities of Africa, South America and Asia in the late 1980s and early 1990s. She was even awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She was also the recipient of four posthumous awards including the 1993 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and competitive Grammy and Emmy Awards. Since her tragic death, Hepburn has been the subject of many biographies and the 2000 dramatisation of her life, The Audrey Hepburn Story, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt and Emmy Rossum, was a clear dedication to the influential impact she had on the industry and society. And her legacy still lives on – Hepburn’s image is widely used in advertising campaigns across the world and having been colourised and digitally enhanced, the beautiful image of that starry-eyed woman staring into the lens continues to depict the romantic ideal that many film stars strive to measure up to today. Hepburn lived a real life– she loved and lost, conquered and achieved while playing the part of one of the world’s most watched glamorous stars…undoubtedly her irrepressible charm, precocious talent and selfless actions will continue to inspire.

oday, jeans are the wardrobe staple; the most versatile item that now not only symbolises comfort, but is a style statement of unrivalled proportions – ranging from the high street’s massproduced, ten-pounds-a pair versions; elevating to the bespoke Udeshi London’s made-to-order Heritage jeans, and Flavio Braviatore’s Billionaire Italian Couture jeans. So how has such a simple fabric, intended over a century ago as a lowly cover for wagons and tent material, reached such fashion heights? arly Medieval history portrays St Valentine as a priest who refused an unattested law attributed to Roman Emperor Claudius II, ordering that soldiers remain single. The Emperor did this believing that married men did not make good soldiers. However Valentine preached that falling in love was magical, and that the heart was close to the divine and preformed secret marriage ceremonies. The married soldiers were educated by Valentine’s secret code of placing the left hand over their heart to communicate “I love you” or would draw a love heart symbol to their wives in letters. An infuriated Claudius found out about this and had Valentine thrown in jail and ordered his public execution by a single arrow to the heart. On February 14th Valentine performed a miracle by healing Diana, the blind daughter of his jailer, who he fell in love with at first sight, when she gave him bread and water. On the evening before Valentine was executed, he requested parchment and ink from the indebted jailer, where he wrote the first recorded Valentine

message addressed to “Diana My Beloved”. Inside it read: “Forever, your Valentine”, with a love heart symbol. The next morning Valentine was publically executed with a single arrow to the heart, as a symbol of a broken heart. Today 14th February is celebrated almost globally as Valentine’s Day, a testament or prompt of love for couples and those who seek it. Cards, flowers, chocolates and gifts are very common practice, but do they really express that special feeling of love? The mere anticipation of your lips connecting is like an exploding rainbow of physical, psychological and spiritual emotions all going off at once, and is the magical gift itself I believe that Valentine preached. The Ancient Greeks believed in the divine myths of plants and flowers and also used their art work on pottery to convey the message of love. Archeologists have discovered Ancient Greek pottery dating back to 500 BC, many with drawings and inscriptions of Gods and Goddesses, one in particular being Aphrodite (Venus) the Goddess of Love. Everything from weddings to company marketing videos and talking pets were publicly broadcast and yet none were as gripping or striking as a film trailer. Teaming up with the most inventive photographer (Ricardo Pierre Matthews) we had ever met, we found ourselves locked in a bedroom for days with bottles of wine, a stack of paper and a box of dvd’s. We came out with a vision to deliver a truly unique experience, delivering films for everyone from entertainers, brides and businesses that would conjure the emotions, excitement and intrigue of any Hollywood picture. Quite literally, the most effective off-the-charts promotional tool and a beautiful gift for that special day.” In this brand new year and fast moving online world, A Bat Country Productions are the filmmakers leading the charge. The Bats even accomplished the challenge of transforming a small club night, held in an attic, into the Uk’s largest No.1 party, and many show-reel clients quitting their day jobs and becoming full time professionals as the response had been so overwhelming. On the other end of the visual spectrum, A Bat Country’s spellbinding approach to weddings has made some incredible waves. They’ve handcrafted what can only be considered a modern spin on the dated wedding videography. Long gone are the wide, lifeless shots of guest’s hats and what seems like hours of cream walls, the Bats are bringing the laughs, tears and memories back. Gorgeous, intimate shots of the bride and groom remind us of ‘Gone with the Wind’, the party’s stream with colours and the environments majestic, the true meaning of a Hollywood love story. Personalising is the key to their success with each wedding reflecting the bride and groom’s dynamic. Head of Post-Production, Chris Pennington, told us “the first question we always ask is ‘What’s your favourite movie” followed by “How did you meet?”. You get a real sense of a couple’s chemistry by those answers and it pretty much determines the visual outcome of their wedding film”. These tidbits all point towards what makes the team’s work so unique and why you’ll never see two of their weddings the same, a compassionate process, and extraordinary outcome. SCENE were invited for an on-set visit, filmed on location in Cambridge, for the Bats latest clients, Show-reel, a trip back to the smoky swing and jazz clubs for a jive experience you won’t want to miss. Stepping onto the closed set what caught our attention was the fun and control from the Director and all the way across to the Production team. A Bat Country Productions make a point stating they “utlise state-of-the-art equipment”. An Italian Papillon Ristorante in Chigwell is celebrating its first Birthday this February at their Brook Parade site in the High Road. It’s a family run Italian restaurant, run by owner, Nino, and has all the qualities of a good, authentic Italian eatery: Simply prepared food with fresh and flavoursome ingredients. I’d heard good things about Papillon so was keen to try it for myself, particularly as Italian cuisine is my number one food of choice! Words by Jo Fraser Photos by Emma McCann

dined on a Thursday evening and the restaurant already had the majority of its tables filled when my guest and I arrived for our 7.30pm booking. There was a good mix of large parties sat around the bigger round tables, and smaller tables of twos and fours dotted around the room. We were greeted by Papillon’s charming owner, Nino, who welcomed us in with a smile and asked us to choose which table we’d like. We opted for one towards the back of the room towards the bar. Papillon’s interior is understated sophistication. Clean, crisp white linen at the tables and soft lighting creates a calm and formal, yet relaxed environment. Mirrors along each wall work well to create the illusion of a large space and simple artwork also adorns the walls. For the warmer months, Papillon has a pretty little terrace area at the back, ideal to catch the sun in the afternoons or dine al fresco on summer evenings. A large bowl of fresh olives and warm bread rolls were promptly brought to the table along with the menus. I’m a sucker for a good olive and these certainly passed my test! First on the decision list was which wine to opt for from the menu – mostly made up of Italian varieties but with a smattering of wines from other regions. We opted for the house red: a well-priced Montepulciano d’Abruzzo at a very reasonable £13.95.

The food choice at Papillon is authentic Italian and the well-thought out menu offers a good selection of classic and more contemporary dishes. Starters on offer include Calamari Fritti, Insalata Di Mare “Papillon” and Funghi Ripieni: Mushrooms stuffed with veal, spinach and cheese. Mains on the menu are split into easy to read sections: Pollo, Carne, Pesce, Vitello, Pasta and Insalata. There’s also an extensive specials board which changes on a regular basis. I opted for the Melanzane from the Specials board for my starter: slices of aubergine baked in a rich tomato sauce with cheese melted on top. It arrived as a very generous portion in a steaming terracotta bowl fresh from the oven, the aubergine was cooked to perfection and matched its sweet, rich, chunky, homemade tomato sauce well. My guest chose the Capra Insalata as her starter: warm Goat’s Cheese and Walnut Salad. Again, the portion was large and looked like summer on a plate with its crunchy, colourful peppers surrounding the goat’s cheese which “melted in the mouth”. I was torn between the Pollo Pepe (breast of chicken with pepper and white wine) and the Branzino Da Nino (Grilled Sea Bass with herbs and garlic) for my main course. Nino suggested I go for the sea bass – perhaps as it was named after him! I chose a selection of vegetables and sauté potatoes to accompany my fish. My dining partner was also weighing up a few main options including the Linguine Gamberoni from the main menu and the Spaghetti Lobster on the Specials board. She

opted for the former which was deemed a “good choice” by our waiter. My sea bass came filleted and simply presented on the plate with a slice of lemon and small salad garnish, just as I like it. Green beans, broccoli and sauté potatoes were served separately and was an ample portions for two. The Linguine Gamberoni was deemed a success too. Huge, plump prawns with a spicy chilli kick in a cherry tomato sauce, “bursting with freshness and flavour”. Another bottle of the (very good) house red wine was ordered and we tucked into our food, enjoying the ambience in the restaurant from the surrounding tables and the Rat Pack soundtrack playing softly in the background. The waiters were on hand to ensure we had everything we needed and it was nice to see Nino walking around the tables, chatting to all his customers and enjoying seeing a restaurant full of happy diners. After two hearty courses, my guest and I couldn’t eat another thing so decided against having dessert. If you do have room for a third course, or simply fancy something sweet, Italian staples on offer include Tiramisu, Tartufo Amaretto, Pannacotta and the delicious sounding Crostata di Mele: shortcrust pastry filled with apple purée and topped with slices of apple. Instead we had coffee with complimentary biscuits and chocolates and accepted a Digestif on the house – Amaretto of course! Our meal was a resounding success and neither of us had any complaint about the food or service. Food is reasonably priced and a couple would look to pay around £70 for two courses from the a la carte menu with wine and coffee. Papillon also offers a well-priced lunch menu throughout the week and a Sunday Italian Roast lunch at £15.95 for two courses or £18.95 for three. After dining at Papillon it’s easy to see why the restaurant has built up a strong regular clientele of diners of all age groups. The food sways to the authentic rather than the avant-garde so there’s no big surprises on the menu. However, it’s fresh, well-cooked and well-presented and I would have no qualms about recommending it to friends and family. New dishes are being introduced on the menu for February so I’m looking forward to my next visit to try something new. Happy Birthday Papillon!

When I turned 17 I worked in the Greek Taverna “plate smashing scene”, I had an opportunity to practice my music and also my readings for different people. I became very popular with my readings and people would come back, not to smash plates but to have a reading.

On my 21st Birthday I launched on exclusive west London night clubs as a clairvoyant where I would read for celebrities, VIP’s and many other interesting people. In 1997 I had a serious operation. This created a crisis in my life where I had to draw deeply on my spiritual resources. I came through this fire committed to sharing my insights and had to work from home giving online readings during recovery. I was able to support an increasing number of people through their own journeys by using the spiritual knowledge that ran richly through my family’s history. The need for this operation and my subsequent journey of self-discovery also inspired me to focus on healing techniques. I rekindled an ancient colour therapy to enable aura, chakra balance and self connection. These techniques helped me to swiftly heal psychologically and physically, changing my life for the better. I now apply what I have learned from this experience to help others. Many people have been astounded with the results achieved. Although readings are important; spiritual guidance and self connection are essential! To become a practising psychic and a spiritualist is a responsibility that will take many years of dedication. For me it is has become a way of life.

Carats and points measure a diamonds weight. 100 points make up 1 carat (0.01 carat= 1 point). One carat is equal to 0.20grams. What are the most popular diamond shapes today? Classic, Brilliant and Princess Cut are our most popular sellers. As the name suggests, shape (round, princess, radiant etc.) describes a diamond form. All diamond shapes have different attributes, but overall the beauty of the individual shape is a matter of personal taste. How much should I spend on a diamond ring? How much you spend is a personal matter and your engagement ring should be meaningful to you. But the old tradition is said that you need to spend 2 month’s salary. What about settings?
