One hundred and ninety young performers, aged between 12 and 16, got their

first taste of treading the boards of a West End stage while the judges enjoyed seeing raw young talent. Graham Norton said “I found them amazing, self possessed and confident in a way that I could never have been at their age. Some of the presentations were so moving they made us cry.”

Help for Haven House

Local children’s hospice, Haven House, benefitted from a fantastic fundraising event at Top Golf, Chigwell, on Tuesday 15 November held by Chigwell Business Group. 100 local business people and their friends came together to pitch up for a few games

of golf, a delicious curry and a brilliant raffle, held in aid of Haven House. Siobhan, a fundraiser for the charity, said, ‘We are delighted to have raised almost £2000 at the event on Tuesday; CBG is a brilliant group of passionate businessmen and women who came together to not only network but also raise much needed funds for our children’s hospice. A special thanks goes to John Mannix of Able Power who was instrumental in organising the event.’

Staff at Holly House Hospital, in Buckhurst Hill, have been growing weird and wonderful moustaches for the monthlong charity phenomenon that is ‘Movember’. At the start of ‘Movember’ eight clean-shaven members of the private hospital’s maintenance team committed to growing a moustache for the entire month to raise money for men’s cancer charities. ‘Movember’ is not just about

raising funds, however, it is also about raising awareness of prostate and testicular cancer and the possible symptoms of these so-called ‘silent killers’. The hospital as well as its staff is committed to preventative healthcare and raising awareness which is why Holly House offers screening to men between the ages of 40 and 75 years to assess their risk of prostate cancer.

BLO Bar Launches On Thursday 24th November, BLO Bar hosted a launch party for friends and family to celebrate the opening of their new Queen’s Road salon in Buckhurst Hill. It was a glamorous affair with red carpet and rope at the door and champagne and canapés for the well-turned out guests to enjoy whilst checking out the cool and stylish new venue.

December In Queensroad words by Jo Fraser

The first mention of Buckhurst Hill was recorded in 1135 when a reference was made to ‘La Bocherste’. The same area was referred much later as ‘Bucket Hill’ meaning a hill covered with Beech trees. It lay in Epping Forest and consisted of only a few scattered houses along the ancient road from Woodford to Loughton. The opening of Buckhurst Hill Station in 1856 saw a rapid expansion in the population of the area; nearly six hundred new houses had been built near the station by 1871. Buckhurst Hill today retains a delightful village atmosphere and benefits from a stunning semi-rural location being just a short stroll from Epping Forest. Alongside Loughton and Chigwell, the town is said to form part of the affluent Essex ‘golden triangle’. There is a thriving and friendly local community here and its main shopping area, Queens Road, has a varied range of upmarket boutiques, cafés, restaurants, salons and speciality shops and services.

My Week with Words by Louise Prew

This month sees the launch of My Week With Marilyn. A stunning adaptation of the Colin Clark memoir about his brief but intense relationship with Marilyn Monroe. With a glittering cast including Dame Judi Dench and Zoe Wanamaker, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Emma Watson, Dominic Cooper and many more, This movie is a must-see for fans of the iconic bombshell and those with a romantic heart.

Set in 1956, the true story hones in on the crucial week that 23-year old Colin graduated from Oxford University. Instead of following in his father’s footsteps and taking advantage of the financial privileges he could so easily have, he seeks out his dream of getting into the movie business. Each day he hounds the Lawrence Olivier Productions Company in London until he lands a gopher job for the man himself. Shortly to go into production is the film The Prince and the showgirl starring Lawrence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. A film that was set to launch Marilyn‘s career in the UK and refresh Olivier’s own. Marilyn arrives in the UK to a rapturous welcome, being the most glamorous and beautiful sex symbol of the time (perhaps ever). The story depicts how fragile and delicate she was and the pressure she was under to perform and do what was asked of her, while she battled with her insecurities, low self-esteem and prescription pills. Her behaviour on set drives Olivier to the brink of madness with her tardiness and inability to learn lines, but she finds a sense of comfort and freedom with Colin, who takes the fragile actress under his wing, protecting her and ultimately falling in love with her, though it can’t last. The story is not so tragic in itself (after all everybody’s first love is a tough call) but more the profound unhappiness in Marilyn that resonates deeply and how enigmatically she is portrayed by Williams. How does one become Marilyn? How does an actress manage to pull off the intricate subtleties that made up this beautiful troubled starlet? It would be so easy to portray Marilyn as the red-lipped, sultry-eyed goddess in a white dress that we all know and love. But this movie does something so striking from the start. Michelle Williams absolutely crystallises everything that I remember in Marilyn. The biographies I read as a teenager, the stunning photographs taken of her in repose when she appeared thoughtful and saddened. Even if you are not a fan, you will remember the photographs. The black and white image of her in ballet tulle, sitting with her feet turned inwards staring out to nowhere. Or images of her dressed down, often make-up less but her face, a science of concentration and beauty. Michelle Williams is so believable in SCENE  29

her performance; it truly feels like we are in the room with Marilyn. She plays her vulnerable and waif-like and has her graceful deportment down to a tee. Talking on US television show, Sunday Morning, Williams exclaimed that she wanted to harness the wiggle first. Marilyn had reputedly studied her body in great detail in the early days making sure she mastered her walk, her pout, her sleepy eyes, her exchanges with people. Importantly she knew what worked and what didn’t. Michelle remarks, “Marilyn was no dumb blonde, she was shrewd with a delicious sense of humour, she knew exactly what she had to do to get the headlines.” Michelle, herself 31 years of age, the same age as Marilyn was in the movie The Prince and the Showgirl, has had a sensational history to date. At just fifteen she legally divorced her parents so that she could affectively do as she wished and choose her own career path. Most remembered for her role as Jen Linley in Dawson’s Creek, she was perhaps the actor that stood out the most with her portrayal of a precocious teen known for her sexual exploits. She then went onto receive acclaim for her role as put-upon wife in the epic, Brokeback Mountain, where she met the love of her life, Heath Ledger. The couple went on to have a daughter, Matilda Rose, in 2005. Three years on, Ledger tragically took an accidental overdose of drugs and died. Is it possible that Williams looked to her own personal experience of loss to approach the character of Marilyn who longed for her parents? ”I really didn’t look for a connection,” says Williams. “I didn’t want to connect those dots.” Further highlighting her fear, she said in the Telegraph this month, “To be honest, the part kind of landed in my lap, although I knew immediately that I was going to challenge myself to do it. I spent the

next six months talking myself out of it – it was daunting – but, in the end, there was a kind of inevitability. It was the kind of part I was born to challenge myself with.” And challenge herself she did. Speaking in the Telegraph, Simon Curtis, the director who is debuting with My Week with Marilyn, says that Williams is “perfect in so many ways. She is one of those actresses that I always want. From Dawson’s Creek onwards, I think she is absolutely marvellous.” After Ledger’s death in 2008, Williams was hounded by the paparazzi and shied away from the intense media interest in her life and her daughter. Is it possible that these similarities with Marilyn helped her with the role? “The important thing with Michelle is trust,” says Curtis. “With our film, she wanted to know that she could go on this journey with people she could trust. Also the fact that this wasn’t the whole of Marilyn’s life, rather it was just one month in her life, made it focused, and Michelle responded to that. No one could have worked harder than Michelle and she was brave to take on such an iconic role.” Michelle Williams is exquisite in her portrayal of Marilyn, but its the subtlety of the acting, the grand supporting cast, and the fashion that bring this story to life...the dressed down classical outfits she wears are deliberately taken from archive shots. The mussed up soft platinum curls, the camel coat over the shoulders, the pencil skirt and loose cream blouse worn slightly off the’s an achingly beautiful image to behold and if, like me, you adore Marilyn, you will marvel at Michelle’s ability to capture her child-like innocence. Michelle encapsulates her closing thoughts on Marilyn in the Telegraph...“Marilyn is an icon, and I must say that I have never been so affected by somebody’s beauty until I started spending a lot of time with her. “There’s this incandescence, this mixture, this woman-child. She gave the impression of having the body of a woman but the mind and the heart of an innocent, and that was an intoxicating combination.

Beauty S py Tranquility Health & Beauty La Sutlane De Saba Gold Facial

Cleopatra was known to have applied a gold mask before sleeping, using these precious, healing gold minerals to enhance her beauty and restore a youthful radiance upon wakening. Tranquility Health & Beauty Salon in South Woodford offers La Sultane de Saba treatments including their signature “Gold Facial”, so I booked myself in to discover and experience this Ancient Egyptian ritual for myself. My experienced and friendly therapist, Leanne, thoroughly cleansed my face and applied the Gommage Gold Exfoliant to energise my complexion. Next, a relaxing gold and honey balm was applied and massaged to work on pressure points and drainage. This felt wonderful and the balm emulsified into a milky gel to further purify my skin. After a while of having this glorious balm hydrate and plump my face, it was time for the gold and caviar radiance-enhancing mask to work its magic. Hot towels were placed on my face to maximise the benefits of the mask and I was offered a choice of head and neck, foot or shoulder massage to accompany this stage of the facial. I went for the shoulder massage which added a nice and

thoroughly calming addition to my treatment. A few drops of Sultane de Saba’s anti-ageing serum enriched with caviar, argan oil and vitamin E, along with their eye and face cream completed this luxurious facial. Does it work? YES! This is a truly indulgent yet effective facial, using products with the finest ingredients to smooth wrinkles and restore firmness and luminosity. My face was literally glowing afterwards with tiny gold particles shimmering on my face. I’d recommend the Gold Facial in advance of a special night out, or simply to try one of Cleopatra‘s beauty secrets. The amazing duo that is Frances Furlong and Ashlene McCormack deliver unsurpassed solutions when it comes to non-surgical Beauty. Passion for their work, combined with a unique artistic and creative approach, sets them apart from other practitioners in their respective fields. By thinking outside the box and taking a fresh look at what you need and hope to achieve, they will create a bespoke package that delivers!

Ready for “Botox is an Eyebrow your best Lift? friend until The best non-surgical without going somewhere options under the knife in your 50’s and then it can become your worst enemy”

f you look at a photo of yourself in your mid 20’s to mid 30’s you will notice that the mid temple and cheek area is a lot fuller and more defined. Think of this as the supporting structure (or shelf ) of the face. After this time the ageing process and other factors such as weight loss, yo yo dieting, stress and illness all contribute to this area depilating and becoming more hollow in appearance. To address this problem you need to replace what has been lost and this is done by the use of fillers such as hyraolinic acid or calcium derivative fillers which give an immediate result. Once the volume has been restored then consideration for using muscle relaxing injections can be discussed. Frances is a regular judge for InStyle Magazine’s beauty awards and has recently featured in Woman and Home Magazine showing the “Sunrise Lift Technique” which was launched last year by Restylane. This has become an extremely popular and successful

technique used with her mature clientele where Botox is no longer the best option. Frances feels there comes a stage where Botox accentuates the look of tiredness and causes eyelids to appear heavier! Heavy hooded eyes and poorly shaped eyebrows can be the result of the over or incorrect use of Botox injections and are so unnecessary, often leaving people thinking that the surgeon’s knife is the only option available to them when in actual fact they need a fresh approach to their treatment. If you look at a photo of yourself in your teens and 20’s your eyebrows were probably a good shape, bursting with colour and framing your eyes perfectly. Over time hair loss occurs, colour dulls and then tweezers and razors destroy what God intended! Thyroid imbalance and ageing can cause hair loss but generally women report it’s by their own hand that the worst happens.

Mature white women will be amazed at how natural their brows can look after Permanent Makeup with Ashlene.

Many women make a good job of drawing, tinting or using stencils, but at the end of the day they worry that they’ve wiped their brows away. Normal activities for many of us such as having a facial, going to the gym or swimming are a minefield best avoided in fear that they will be seen without eyebrows. Ashlene’s signature eyebrows replicate

Why do we need eyebrows? Well they frame the face and make your eyes stand out when they are correctly placed. What’s the benefit of having correctly shaped brows? So many clients come to me with poorly shaped or no brows, and until I have created a new brow for them have forgotten how beautiful their eyes are. Brows are getting a lot of attention in fashion and beauty for a reason! For the cost of a monthly salon service to shape and tint your brows you can invest in Permanent Make Up and enjoy the benefit of having perfect eyebrows everyday! The most common mistakes that women of all ages create at home are the classic “Ronald MacDonald” round brow and “golf club”, alongside brows plucked too far apart or too short at the ends. All these eyebrow disasters create a distorted appearance of the balance of the upper face. Thyroid problems and other hormonal disturbances commonly cause the loss of the tail end of the brow and general thinning throughout showing as sparseness. The ageing process accentuates variations in the height of the brows. And if you are lucky enough to have perfectly placed eyebrows the chances are you may want a stronger brow to reflect today’s fashion trend.

Pure oxygen celebrity With many celebrities swearing by the oxygen facial, including Madonna, Brad Pitt and the Sex and the City girls, this must be something worth trying out.

ith the Christmas festivities there is always the over indulgence in alcohol, food and late nights, combined with many strict skin regimes thrown out the window. As a result the skin begins to look tired, aged and lined. Although there are small things we can do to help such as sleeping earlier and drinking plenty of water, we sometimes need an extra helping hand. The PURE OXYGEN FACIAL is suitable for all skin types and consists of 3 parts: Firstly microdermabrasion, to help strip the top layer of dead skin cells, leaving a smoother surface underneath. This helps reduce the appearance of pigmentation and scarring. Following this the therapist will then apply vitamin based serums which helps with both the repair of the skin and the amount of collagen and elastin formed in the skin to help stop sagging. To help push the serums in the therapist will then infuse oxygen under the skin which helps boost blood flow to the area and allows the cells to become healthier in appearance which then shows in the form of healthy revitalised skin. The benefits of oxygen facials are said to range from thorough pore cleansing to lightened hyperpigmentation. Oxygen is suggested to strengthen skin’s elasticity and help eliminate acnecausing bacteria, as well as reduce fine lines and wrinkles, even out skin tone and diminish pores. Many people who experience the non-surgical oxygen facial treatment see an immediate change in their appearance. For best results, we recommend a series of six treatments followed by monthly touchup visits. Try the facial throughout January - normally £95 now only £49 Or purchase a course of 6 - normally £570 SPECIAL OFFER £285

Deck the As winter draws nearer, many of us start to plan the festive season. We explain how you can create elegant Christmas interiors.

hen we think about yuletide interior touches, everybody has a personal approach to how they should look. Shops are packed full of ideas and decorations. The urge to buy, buy, buy year after year can lead to an explosion of Christmas decorations that we no longer want or succumb to decorating with the lot. Expressions such as ‘OTT’ and ‘TACKY’ begin to appear in our vocabulary. Often, less is more. Opt for elegance, rather than overkill and rethink the way you display classic Christmas tree decorations. So let’s get all posh and deck the halls with some thoughts for your interior decoration this Christmas. Twinkle, Twinkle Create a magical white scheme with a fairytale feel. Use silver candlesticks, cut-glass goblets, white birds and crystal animals. Make sure the table sparkles as much as the conversation by dotting it with twinkling silver confetti, or crystals. String beads on a bracelet-length piece of fine elastic and wrap twice around a napkin for your guests to take home. Or just simply buy cut lengths of threaded beads and drape over the table. Go to crystal heaven with pretty hanging decorations in all shapes and sizes. Stick to silver and glass for a sophisticated yuletide look.

Foliage Favourites Buy three small Christmas trees, pot them in glass bowls and display them together to emphasis a modern glamorous combination. Go all fruity and lavish your home with seasonal plants, red and orange berries, green foliage and golden yellow petals. Carry on the same theme and buy fake fruit like red grapes, apples, fir cones, twigs of berries and red baubles. This looks really good. Or just simply buy lime green baubles to decorate the tree, topped off with a ribbon draped around. Don’t Forget The Lights Set the festive scene with magical Christmas lights that’ll add a touch of sparkle to any room. Drape lights over your banister to light up the stairway, or adorn the full set inside a large glass bowl for a spot of creativeness. Buy a large plastic tub that you can see through for your Christmas tree and stuff lights down the side to add a night time glow. What About The Candles Make a wave of candlelight along the full length of your dining table using pillar candles in increasing sizes to form a crescendo of light. Pamper your scenes and get cosy with sweet smelling tea lights scattered around a

seasonal room. Hang In There For an alternative window decoration, hang a crystal drop curtain at the window or over the mantelpiece to bounce glittering light around the room. Turn Christmas cards into a stylish feature by suspending them on different lengths of silver twine, and weighing down each string with a sparkling decoration to reflect sunlight or candlelight. Buy large oversized baubles and hang them outside for a bright welcoming touch. Hang smaller baubles around ceiling lights or display a selection in an interesting corner. Large amounts of baubles also look good in a reflective tray or glass bowls. Let’s Wrap Up Give your presents a unique touch this year. Wrap them in white doily paper laid over coloured paper, topped off with silver twine and a small Christmas decoration. Alternatively, wrap gifts in plain material and brown paper adorned with fabric flowers and pretty crystals beads. And Finally Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy yourself.

Miller & Carter

November saw the launch of the latest branch of the Miller & Carter chain of upmarket steakhouses to open in Epping Forest. It is situated on the Wake Arms roundabout just outside Epping and takes up the site previously owned by Old Orleans. To the left of the room is an attractive bar featuring a vast range of wines, beers and premium spirits. The name ‘Razza’ translates and reflects the superiority of this restaurant when placed in line with its many rivals in terms of the quality of food, level of service and the grandeur of the venue. A place where the staff are attentive and service is an important element, aimed at making customers feel at home. The great building that Razza occupies was formerly a bank, and has retained many original architectural features including the high ceilings and double length windows. A stairway leads to an overlooking mezzanine level. Razza is the brainchild of leading Essex restaurateur, Sayasta Miah, and it recently underwent a refurbishment to give the interior a fresh new look. More tables have been added to the ground floor dining area, and the mezzanine floor now boasts a lounge bar where diners can

have a leisurely drink before or after their meal, or simply pop in for a drink and an Indian snack with friends. The emphasis here is on the food from the diverse regions of India. Classical and contemporary dishes are cooked with only the freshest of ingredients. These dishes are prepared authentically, as in Indian homes and no short cuts are taken. All spice mixes are prepared freshly and ground individually for each dish. New additions to the menu include a range of sizzling grilled dishes for a lighter and healthier option. Regular Bollywood nights are hugely popular at Razza and their Christmas season and New Year’s Eve party with Bhangra DJ promise not to disappoint. Arabian An Arabian restaurant in Essex? In fact, an Arabian restaurant per se? I’ve eaten Middle Eastern cuisine in London before, but this was to be my first experience of an authentic Arabian eatery, and the fact that it was in my local area made my visit there all the more intriguing. Words by Jo Fraser

Al Khayma, which means “The Tent” in Arabic, is part of a new, two restaurant arm of the well-established London Darbar stable of banqueting suites, catering, functions and events. It is situated on the first floor above their contemporary Indian restaurant, “The Restaurant” on Cranbrook Road between Gants Hill and Ilford. Upon entering Al Khayma, I was immediately transported to the warmth and exoticism of the Middle East. The room, which seats up to 100 diners, is stunningly decorated with traditional, ornate, low wooden seating in the main area, with a number of curtained off private booths around the back and both sides of the room. My guest and I were shown to one of the booths featuring a large table surrounded by sumptuous sofas and beautiful cushions in an array of colours and textures. The booths seat from 2-25 people and ours was huge! Our waitress for the evening provided us with a call button (a nice touch) entitled “Marhaba”, meaning “Welcome” in Arabic. This little device was to be used for when we needed drinks, food, our bill or any other questions we may have throughout our evening. We were offered a drink from their extensive selection of cocktails, mocktails, wine and spirits, so thought we’d try 58  SCENE

out a couple of their Martini cocktails as a pre-dinner treat, and to whet our appetite for what was to come. These got the thumbs up. Al Khayma’s food offering consists of four “Feast Menus”: Vegetarian, Chicken, Lamb and Seafood. Being a rather indecisive menu chooser, this made things a little easier for me having only four to decide from, but I still had the problem of just which one of the four deliciously sounding menus to pick. After much deliberation my guest and I opted for the more traditional Middle Eastern Lamb feast menu at £24.50 and the interesting Seafood option priced at £29.50. A side note here: make sure you’re hungry when dining at Al Khayma as it truly is a FEAST! Call button pressed, food questions answered and our order promptly taken, we were then presented with our first course. Both starters included lentil soup, mixed olives, “Khobz” freshly cooked bread, humus, tabbouleh and mixed Mediterranean pickles. The lamb starter also came with “Kibbe Lahme” – a deep fried lamb and cracked wheat patty filled with minced meat. For the seafood starter we had Falafel Kredis: Prawns, chickpeas, parsley and Arabic spices served with coconut and chilli sauce. It was presented beautifully in authentic dishes, looking almost too good to eat. We would have been more than content with the incredibly tasty and ample starters, but it was now time for the main course of our banquet. For the Lamb Feast main we were given a large dish including Marinated Grilled Tender Leg of Lamb and Charcoal Grilled Boneless Lamb Pieces SCENE  59

marinated with yoghurt & spices, both served on a bed of Arabian rice. The perfectly slow cooked lamb simply fell off the bone and melted in the mouth. Our seafood platter was no less impressive, featuring a mixed grill of fresh Seabass, King Prawn and Salmon Fillet, all marinated with Arabic spices to give a new and exciting twist on the usual fish dishes we tend to find in restaurants. Both mains came with a side of sautéed potatoes, mixed leaf salad and more of the delicious warm bread which complemented the mains well. The addition of a fiery chilli sauce for those with a liking for something hot, is not to be missed. Time to sit back, relax, let our mains go down and watch the belly dancer who took to the floor to showcase some seriously impressive moves! They have live dancing every night at Al Khayma and it is hard not to find yourself escaping into this little slice of Arabian culture and atmosphere. After a brief respite from our food so far, it was time to peruse the vast dessert menu. These are at an additional cost to the feast menus. There was so much on offer including a traditional Arabian milk pudding and fresh fruit platter for two but we opted for the Khayma Dessert Platter consisting of Middle Eastern favourites Turkish Delight, Baklava and Basboussa, a sweet cake soaked in syrup. This was a feast in itself! From behind our curtain and like a work of art came a spectacular three-tiered cake stand with the most amazing looking cakes, sweets and pastries. My sweet-toothed companion was in “dessert heaven”. This came accompanied by a pot of Arabic tea, again presented in an authentic and ornate jug with little glass cups. Al Khayma’s striking surroundings and menu ticks all the boxes with regards to authentic cuisine, atmosphere and a unique offering in the area. Belly dancers, Arabic music, the call button and a life size camel all add to the experience. It’s a fine dining restaurant with an element of fun and is extremely good value considering the number of dishes on offer. Entertaining is fundamental to the Arabian people and Middle Eastern families pride themselves on hospitality. They say “you will be welcomed like a family” into their culture, and this was proved here on our night out. Whether you’re dining for two, on a business dinner or with a group of friend, it’s well worth a visit.

Something’s cooking Nuovo At Frederick Forster, who won the National Chef of the Year title last month, had so fallen out of love with cooking that 18 months ago he was working as a meeter and greeter for Abercrombie & Fitch. SCENE reports on how he got his second wind. Words by Jo Fraser

Frederick Forster has the look of an incredulous comeback kid. “I feel invigorated again,” he says, perched in the reception of restaurant Nuovo in Buckhurst Hill, a framed picture of his victory at the Craft Guild of Chefs’ National Chef of the Year 2011 hung beside him. “Sometimes people peak, go down, then they peak again. I feel like I’ve got a second wind and winning this title affirms that.” To many, Forster’s victory at the prestigious National Chef of the Year finals in early October was nothing out of the ordinary. A former head chef at the Ritz, and the thirdplaced finalist in 2010’s competition, his triumph could seem like a natural progression for an individual with such pedigree. “I just had the feeling when I entered that this would be my year,” he says, sat upright in Nuovo’s reception. “I had done a lot of planning, had some good advice from people I really respect. I thought I really must be in with a shot.” Built like a sprinter and with a Colin Jackson-esque eloquence, Forster could well be a poster boy for UK chefs. In fact, just 18 months ago the 36-year-old was leaning more on his looks than his cooking skill, filling in as one of the honed hunks at clothes shop, Abercrombie & Fitch, after falling out of love with cooking. However, when talking about his title, his self-belief seems somehow refreshed. When the winner was announced at the event, Forster’s success appeared somehow preordained. Positioned in the centre of the stage, with all eyes set on him, it wasn’t until the compere uttered the words “If anyone lives up to the adage ‘if at first you don’t succeed try, try, try again’ it’s this chef,” that his face cracked and his hands clasped his forehead in disbelief.

Forster’s victory represents a remarkable turnaround for someone who was giving serious consideration to quitting cooking all together not so long ago. Up until then, his career had been an accolade-laden rise through Michelinstarred kitchens. After graduating from Westminster Kingsway College, he went straight to work for Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir Aux Quat’Saisons. Amongst his earlier career he also worked abroad - at the Sandy Lane Hotel in Barbados and Le Royal Mirage Hotel, Dubai. He returned to spend four years in a career-high role as head chef at the Ritz and the end of his time there coincided with doubts creeping into his mind: “When I left the Ritz I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I felt I had gone as far as I could go in fine-dining and didn’t know if I wanted to go back.”

After some time out of the industry, it was clear where Frederick’s strengths and passions lay. He went back to cooking and after a year’s stint in Hornchurch, the owners of Nuovo persuaded him to come on board and help transform their Buckhurst Hill restaurant with a line-up of more upmarket British dishes. Forster’s specials board, - featuring the likes of his winning scallop dish and roast partridge, sits amongst Nuovo’s Italian influenced pizza and pasta offering. Both he and the owners know the direction they want to take the restaurant - maintaining some of the Italian vibe but introducing more upmarket British Brasserie food. Frederick seems happy pursuing a steady life in the provinces, away from the Michelin-starred mayhem he spent so much of his earlier career in, and is looking forward to launching his new Brasserie style menu at “Fredericks” at Nuovo, Buckhurst Hill in January 2012. One thing is for certain; he’s adamant that he’s not going to let this second wind blow out. “I feel physically and mentally stronger than I did when I was 22,” he says. “There’s a lot to come from me.”

RGB wins retailer of the year for the second year in a row!!

off. After winning the AAA Award 2010-11, ERT Award 2010, IER (Independent Electrical retailer) award 2011-12, RGB now added the ERT Award 2011 to their collection of awards within the last year.

As RGB are named Best Retailer of the year 2011, becoming the first company in the history of the ERT awards to win it 2 years in a row! Multi awarding winning Essex based company RGB won their 4th National award. The ERT award is the most prestigious award known in the electrical industry. The ERT Awards 2011 took place in London on the 7th of November, with retailers and manufacturers from all over the UK coming together to celebrate excellence and outstanding achievements in the electrical retailing sector. After a record number of entries to the awards, the event, which was held at the prestigious Commonwealth Club venue in central London, was a complete sell-out. Thousands of entries nationwide were filtered down to three finalists. The ceremony was co-hosted by ERT’s Editor, Sean Hannam, and Managing Editor, Andrew Davies. Paul Clarke, Field Sales Manager from LG, stepped up to the stage and revealed that RGB had once again won the award and presented the trophy to Jason and Dennis Digwa. RGB fought off stiff competition to win the “Best retailer of the year 2011”. “To win the award last year was an amazing achievement however to retain the award for the second year is a true accolade” said Dennis Digwa. Many retailers approached the Essex Boys, Jason and Dennis Digwa, to congratulate them on the award. The ERT award was based on many aspects including mystery shoppers, quality and quantity of products on display and ready for demonstration. RGB now also offer home appliances from washing machines to integrated ovens and cookers and with their new price promise gives then the edge in a competitive industry. The prestigious ERT award, described by RGB director, Jason Digwa, as “the Ultimate Electrical industry award” was a great achievement for RGB and shows by continually investing in their stores and customer service, it has paid 64  SCENE

The family oriented business prides itself on great service and amazing offers in the field of electrical retail for over two decades. These qualities have seen the business expand, increasing its turnover four fold since 2000 and now winning another national recognition of the highest form. RGB’s buying power allows them to market exclusive deals which other Electrical retailers cannot offer. “Our commitment is based on two long-term objectives that shape everything we do here at RGB: delivering an outstanding service, that meets the needs of our customers, and delivering exceptional value.” The showroom was designed with the customer’s ease of purchasing in mind, boasting a dedicated Demo Room, numerous lifestyle interactive zones and fully operational products on display. All staff are manufacturer trained, therefore having the abilities to showcasing the full features and benefits of all the available products. “We wanted to create an electrical store that would stand out from the crowd. A store that would personify what a true customer experience is all about. We hope our store shows that we are not afraid to invest in what we truly believe in”. said Jason Digwa, Director. RGB have recently celebrated their 21st Birthday on the 26th November with amazing offers such as an American fridge freezer for only £449, a LG 50” Plasma for £399 and a Samsung 40” LED for only £399. Customers queued from the early hours to grab these plus many more amazing bargains. We asked Dennis Digwa if you had to buy a TV which one would you buy? “There are many offers available at the moment such as the Sony & Samsung cash back and discounted home cinema packages. Personally the Sony KDL55HX923 with a free PS3, 5 year warranty for £2149 is one I am keeping an eye on. However, I would always advise anyone to come and visit the store to choose which TV suits you”.

Spencer Munson Lettings’ £100 Incentive Referral Scheme

With the recent volatile markets, a lot of my clients have been asking me how they should be structuring their portfolios. With the global economy seemingly teetering on the brink, the adage of having a balanced portfolio has never been as relevant. If we take a look back at how various asset classes have fared both before the global crisis in 2008 and the period afterwards, it’s all too clear that holding a balanced, diversified portfolio is a key factor in achieving your long term investment objectives.

Recommend a new Landlord and find yourself £100 better off this Christmas! (T&C apply)

During 2008, UK equities (measured by the FTSE All Share index) were at the bottom of the league table versus other investments, losing ~30% over the calendar year. Yet in 2009, as investors’ confidence buoyed on the back of a more stable economic environment, they led the way, reversing all those losses with a gain of ~30% over the following 12 month period. But is it just these so-called riskier assets that suffer such extremes? Definitely not. If we take UK gilts a similar, yet opposite, pattern emerges. As investors sold off equities in 2008, the demand for, and consequently the price of gilts rose to record levels, making it the strongest performing asset class of the year, returning over 13% over the year. Yet as those conditions flipped, gilts lost ~1% over the next 12 months. The message is clear: no single asset class performs consistently well. The uncertainty that is gripping global markets is likely to be here to stay, at least for the foreseeable future. As the bailout discussions in Europe have shown, there is no quick or simple fix. The best way to avoid these boom-and-bust cycles is to make objective investment decisions – spread your money across a selection of asset types, countries and sectors and your investments stand a better chance of achieving more consistent returns. Marty My

Scene Marty Thornton is the iconic and flamboyant pop artist who is fast gaining notoriety with his latest collection at the Whitebull Brasserie in Loughton, Essex called Loubies, Lips & Lashes. A blingtastic homage to Essex in itself and its patrons; the collection is very rock and roll with its arresting use of glitter, crystal and colour. Illustriously tacky and shamefully excessive, the collection has already been snapped up by the girls from TOWIE and Rochelle from the Saturdays. Well heeled in the industry, Marty is not short on humour, which has come with such varied experience, and his artwork proves it. His comedy, good nature and passion, not to mention that gravelly East End drawl, has got Scene hooked....

Words by Louise Prew What’s Loubies, Lips & Lashes all about? Well, while drinking cocktails at Whitebull, I was inspired by the glamour of the women, so I created a collection of pictures especially for the girls. They’re unique one off pieces designed just for Whitebull. I think I’ve captured the essence of Essex. But I tell you what, when I was invited by Lee Whitelock to showcase my work - nothing prepared me for how glamorous the Essex girls are! If they ever decided to go au naturel, the eyelash and cosmetic industry would crash! Your work is beautifully childlike, is that intentional? Absolutely. I’m self-taught, the technical skills are there but I choose not to use them. I’m definitely Marmite, you either love me or you hate me but I’m done with the technical stuff now. I used to work with Barbara Hulanicki of Biba and I interior-designed her shop. From the stripes we used in there on the flooring -everything had to be perfectly precise and symmetrical so that’s when those skills came into play. But no, I prefer my stuff to look flawed; the wonkiness is the charm of it.

This particular collection is tacky but brilliant... Yes! Definitely! That’s what its about. I did some pieces of Marilyn Monroe and Liza Minelli and I cut up Louis Vuitton bags and used the fabrics and the monograms to give it a twist. It’s a statement and it just works. That’s my style all over. Who or what inspires your work? The master, Andy Warhol. But you know what? Everything inspires me, my partner, my friends... Regards the collection, I think I’ve found my spiritual home in Essex. I get it. It’s the gypsy in me that loves the sparkle! (Marty has a Romany Gypsy background). How do your days flow? I never have a plan. I wake up and thank the universe for being a part of it. I open up my emails and see where the day takes me. Last week I was being filmed at my Soho exhibition and at a dinner with Grayson Perry (winner of the Turner prize). This week I have been asked to do a show in Paris – The Parisians love Pop Art. Another company has asked me to design some furniture and some fabric. Each day is different. Who knows what’s next. I just love the diversity of it all. Describe your environment when you’re working on a piece... I’ve got a full-on art studio. Every tool, every spray, canvasses, brushes, glue, you name it, I’ve got it...I have the radio on ‘cause I like a bit of everything. Someone pops by with a bottle and you know, I welcome constructive criticism, it keeps the inspiration fresh, so if one of my friends say something isn’t working I listen to them. How do you manage yourself? I work with two London galleries and I have four dealers who work with me. That keeps me busy as we have shows from Soho to New York. Will Ramsay (founder of Wills Art House in Putney which showcases affordable, contemporary art) collects my work and that’s inspiring for me because I want my work to be affordable as well

as high end. How long does it take to work on a piece? It varies. Something can take me an hour but it’s taken me fifty years to get it right. The stars that have bought your work are pretty avant-garde. Is that your typical customer? Yeah. I used to design jewellery for the ultra hip and celebrity coveted Voyage. Big beautiful statement rings and necklaces – the ones that you can get ten a penny now but back then they were new and very different. It was a majorly exclusive shop and you had to ring the doorbell to get in. Anyway, Madonna used to come in and she used to buy my stuff. What did she buy? I did these mad Cameo pieces, a massive necklace and a ring with Diana Dors as the siren centrepiece. She bought the whole set in Bazooka Jo Bubblegum boxes. Its funny ‘cause when she did that film with Warren Beatty (Dick Tracy, 1990), she went to the première dressed exactly like Diana Dors in that Cameo piece, I think she bought it for inspiration. That must have been a buzz It does give you a buzz but it doesn’t pay your bills if they’re not willing to pay full whack! So her people asked if she could have it for free, what did you say? Well, what do you think darlin?! What’s up in 2012? I want to go back to 3D. I like to keep my style evolving. Who knows, like I say, I just open up my emails and see where the day takes me. In my bathroom I’ve got a picture drawn by an East End graffiti artist, it says: “I don’t know what I am doing, but I am having fun doing it!” That sums me up really!
