laerswyck and Zwierlein's Religion in New Netherland are good specialized studies. The enthusiasm for pre-Columbian investigations has led to a careful study of early Scandinavian visits to the new world. Olson has edited the surviving records and Fossum and Hovgaard have written substantial secondary accounts of them. The Swedes' colonizing activities have been exploited by two scholars. Johnson has edited Geographia Americae, based on notes made by Linderstrom in 1654-56, and both he and Ward have written on the Delaware settlements. Westergaard, on the other hand, has dealt with Denmark's accomplishments in the Caribbean and his Danish West Indies Under Company Rule is so exhaustive that the subject need never again be taken up. The outstanding American work on German colonization is Mary Townsend's Rise and Fall of Germany's Colonial Empire which has met with universal approbation. Earle and Jastrow have considered the Bagdad Railroad and Loretta Baum, Teutonic designs on Brazil. Two brilliant books by Golder, Bering's Voyages and Russian Expansion on the Pacific, 1641-1850, have acquainted students in the United States with the Muscovites' truly great achievements. These had been poorly understood and it proved not a little surprising to learn that the Russian movement east closely paralleled our own toward the west, with the phenomenon of the frontier appearing in both cases. Haworth has edited useful accounts of the inside passage to Alaska from the close of the eighteenth century. A singular timidity in acknowledging the existence of an American colonial empire has prevented the publication of any substantial work dealing exlusively with its creation. The subject is, however, well handled in LatanĂŠ's American Foreign Policy, a highly popular university text, and Sears' History of American Foreign Relations.
