BIBLIOGRAPHIE COLONIALE

woman, is one of the most charming travel accounts in existence. The other British possessions have attracted an occasional student. Brebner's volume on Acadia as the outpost of New England has precipitated widespread controversy, especially in France. Wittke was the first American to write an adequate history of Canada. Livingston's Responsible Government in Nova Scotia has been enthusiastically received. Allin's studies of Australasian tariffs are well known. Hoskins' British Routes to India is a highly original work which has attracted even more favorable attention abroad than in the United States. Giffen's recent volume on the Fashoda affair will prove of lasting value. Hitchin's The Colonial Land and Emigration Commission prĂŠsente a full account of a hitherto rather obscure body. With the Americans interested in European expansion in direct proportion to its effect on their own destinies, far less notice has been given to French efforts than to those of the British. But followers in the footsteps of Parkman are by no means uncommon and many of their writings are of a distinctly high order. Thwaites' France in America, 1497-1763, is still the best general account, though now a quarter of a century old. The deeds of the hardy explorers have been duly chronicled. Munro's modest Crusaders of New France possesses singular charm. The voyages of Champlain have appeared in two editions, one edited by Bourne and the other by Grant. Ribaut's classic on Terra Florida has been well handled by Jeannette Connor and Tonty's and others' accounts of La Salle's expeditions by Cox. Steck and Thwaites have narrated the exploits of Marquette and Joliet, Cox the opening up of Louisiana, and Upham the careers of Groseilliers and Radisson. Lescarbot, the French Hakluyt, has been made known to Americans by Biggar. The astounding achievements of the Society of Jesus have been set forth in Thwaites' stupendous 71 volume Jesuit Relations, the publication of which was completed at the turn of the century.
