Professor Bolton's editions of famous explorers' journals and contemporary historias in English translation, such as Anza's California Expeditions, Historical Memoirs of New California, by Fray Francisco Palôu and Kino's Historical Memoir of Pimeria Alta, are flawless pieces of craftsmanship. His scrupulous care as editor may be gauged by the fact that, in preparing the records of the Anza party for the press, he personally covered the entire 2,000 mile route and identified practically every waterhole and camp site recorded. Bolton's own writings (Spanish Exploration in the Southwest, The Mission as a Frontier Institution in the Spanish-American Colonies, The Spanish Borderlands, Texas in the Middle Eighteenth Century and Athanase de Mézières) are marked by their originality, sparkling style and dramatic narrative power and have won for him the presideney of the American Historical Association, knighthood in the Order of Isabel the Catholic, and the degree of commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy. Professor Bolton's influence as a teacher of modern colonization has been unequalled. A visit to his class in the history of the Americas, with its 1,200 students, its specially drawn maps eight times normal size, bamboo poles serving as pointers and army of assistants, is an unforgettable experience. The majority of specialists in Hispanic-American history found in the United States today have been trained by him. The sending of two California students a year to Spain has led to considerable firsl hand acquaintance with the archivas of the Indies and the production of a series of monographs characterized by their versatility of subject matter and uniformly high quality. Of particular merit are Cunningham's Audiencia in the Spanish Colonies, Miss Fisher's Intendant System in Spanish America and Vice-Regal Administration in the Spanish-American Colonies, Simpson's Encomienda in New Spain and Smith's Viceroy of New Spain. James A. Robertson's first material contribution to the literature of Spanish colonization was made as co-editor with Emma H. Blair of the monumental 55 volume Philippine Islands, 1493-1898, one of the major historical publishing
