BIBLIOGRAPHIE COLONIALE

of California. Those by Fish, Matteson and Parker cover the American colonies as a whole ; those by Andrews, Miss Davenport and Bell and Parker deal primarily with the British possessions ; those by Bolton, Chapman, Hill and Robertson, with Spain's holdings. One of the most striking aspects of the study of colonial history in the United States since the turn of the century has been the complete reversal of opinion relative to Spanish achievements. The literary works of Prescott had endowed the conquistadors with romantic glamor but, save for Bancroft, members of the older school of historians, bred in the New England tradition, had been unanimous in branding the Iberians as dismal incompetents in the creation of empire. Professors Bourne of Yale '(Spain in America, 1460-1580) and Moses of California (The Spanish Dependencies in South America, South America on the Eve of Emancipation, and Spain's Declining Power in South America, 1730-1806) were the first effectively to demonstrate Spain's systematic elaboration of a comprehensive colonial policy, the remarkable skill she showed in solving innumerable knotty problems then first encountered by the white man, and the permanence of the Spanish imprint in the lands below the Missouri. Their pioneer work has been continued by a host of others, among whom Herbert E. Bolton, James A. Robertson and William S. Robertson have become masters in their own right. The University of California at Berkeley is today famed as a center for the study of Spanish colonization and " the California School " has become the most outstanding historical group in the country. Its members have collected and published source material with scrupulous care and have undertaken scholarly studies on all phases of the subject. While attention was at first focused on those outlying portions of Spain's empire now forming the American Southwest, interest in due course shifted to colonial beginnings and the history and institutions of early New Spain have been more recently studied.
