Morris' History of Colonization, Reinsch's Colonial Administration and Colonial Government and Snow's Administration of Dependencies, all published early in the century, were inspired by recent acquisitions in the Caribbean and Pacific and, while ably serving their immediate purpose of affording elementary instruction in matters largely new to Americans, are now hopelessly antiquated and accumulate dust in our libraries. The findings of the army of specialists now tilling the field will, however, inevitably be synthesized at an early date. On the other hand, works dealing with the activities of one or more groups of colonizing peoples, with the Europeanizing of single continents or with special problems of overseas control, meeting all tests of modern scholarship, are fairly numerous and are appearing with growing frequency. Typical among them are Gibbons' New Map of Africa and New Map of Asia, Harris' Europe and Africa and Europe and the East, Keller's Colonization (excluding that by the British and French), Bolton and Marshall's Colonization of North America, Chitwood's History of Colonial America, Beer's African Questions at the Paris Peace Conference, Donaldson's Colonial Economic Policy and Snow's Question of Aborigines in the Law and Practice of Nations. The need for a thorough understanding of old world conditions leading to the era of exploration and settlement has always been obvious and Cheyney's European Background of American History has enjoyed well-merited fame for a generation. But only recently has it become evident that, with the natives forming one of the two primary constituents of colonial society, their life before the advent of the conquerors must likewise be carefully studied if any real comprehension of the conflict of cultures attending their meeting is to be gained. Much consideration has, consequently, of late been given to the Indians in the new world.
