are still to be found abundantly in certain parts ; they are gradually

submitted

to

systematic

investigations

by

the

Government, and we are, therefore, in the remarkable instance of dealing with what might be termed « colonial archeology ». It should be emphasized that the famous « Vinland » voyages of the Norsemen, which are closely connected with the Greenland settlements, are attempts at colonization just as much as voyages of discovery, even if these attempts were nipped in the bud. The re-discovery of Greenland in the latter part of the 16th century was followed by the establishment in the 18th century of a number of mission kingdoms

of

and trading posts by the united

Denmark and

Norway,

and

when

Denmark

and Norway were separated by the Peace of Kiel 1814, Greenland remained under the Danish crown (as did also Iceland and the Fseroes). Greenland has the character of a trading colony, preserving, however, a stamp of its own because the welfare of the native population has been kept in view from the beginning more than momentary profit. The Greenland trade

(apart from

that of the Thule District that belongs to a private company) constitutes a monopoly of the Government, and the colonized part of the country

is rigorously

closed to

anybody who

cannot prove to go there for serious purposes as officials and their families, scientists, etc. In this way it has been possible to protect the natives from many evils otherwise connected with

European

civilization,

and

their

number

is

steadily

increasing. There has been written several works both pro et contra the monopoly and the politics of the Government towards Greenland as a whole, and there are also official reports of especially

appointed

commissions.

Between

Denmark

and

Norway there is a dispute regarding the north-east coast of Greenland, Norway being the only power that has protested against acknowledging the entire island of Greenland as Danish territory. Concerning this point there has been made an appeal to the international tribunal at the Hague.
