Plant a self-sustaining garden ardening is a rewarding hobby with G thousands of devotees. A self-sustaining garden can be an efficient addi-

CPOO-113868

tion to any home, but gardens require upkeep and a certain measure of dedication. A self-sufficient garden is a garden that sustains itself through proper planning and execution. Such gardens can almost take care of themselves so long as the soil is healthy soil, the seeds are reused and organic material is produced. When planting your own self-sustaining garden, consider the following tips. • Start with soil. Healthy soil is essential to a thriving garden. The soil must have the right pH, correct texture and composition, and be full of nutrients. Very often the native soil in yards is not adequate to keep a garden thriving. In such instances, the soil needs to be improved. Adding compost -- which can be produced in the yard as well -- to the soil will enrich the soil with nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. • Maintain proper soil consistency. Soil that is the right consistency, meaning the optimum balance of sand, clay and actual soil, is another necessity for a self-sustaining garden. The ideal ratio should be 40 percent sand, 40 percent silt and 20 percent clay. Having the right

balance of soil can secure root formation and promote proper drainage. • Test the pH. Certain plants need a specific pH in order to grow. A neutral pH range is typically ideal for growing vegetables. A pH tester can be purchased from a gardening center. Amend the soil accordingly to get the soil back to its correct level. • Know the growing season. Vegetables should be planted during the season in which they will thrive. Peas, beets and cabbage, for example, are cold-temperature vegetables, while cucumbers, squash and melons thrive in warm climates. Plant accordingly so that the vegetables will have the best chances for success. • Purchase quality seeds. Use fresh seeds, particularly ones that have been harvested from your own garden the year before, to have the best chances for germination. Or buy seeds from a reputable source, like a garden center or an online retailer who specializes in vegetable seeds. • Start seedlings indoors. You may want to work with seedlings indoors so that you can monitor growth and care for them more easily. Then transplant the seedlings outside when they are stable enough for the elements.

SEEDS in Honesdale a sustainable energy resource:

Solar panels, ‘cheaper by the dozen’

ustainable Energy Education & Development Support (SEEDS) recently sponsored a free three part Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Solar workshop. The workshop, conducted by Martin Young, an experienced local solar installer who got his training from a SEEDS-sponsored course several years ago, was held in the Honesdale Park Street Complex. The free workshop was open to the general public, and resulted in six orders for solar kits for our area. The first night offered an overview of Do-ItYourself (DIY) Solar Installation, including costs, payback, and the return on a solar investment. Evaluation of sites for rooftop solar was also discussed, and tips about new smart phone apps that help with the evaluation were shared. Martin also advised on how to create drawings which are required for local permits. The basic information required to make a decision about whether to proceed with a solar installation was covered. Sixty-four people attended our first session. During the second evening of the workshop, people began to do the actual work involved. All the equipment required to connect the inverters to panels, and panels to racking was there, including a solar panel, weighing approximately 45 pounds. Martin encouraged folks to pick it up and feel the weight of it. Loading these on to the roof top is one of the most difficult aspects of a DIY solar installation.

Members of the SEEDS Solar Committee built a roof top section that was used for demonstration. Participants went through the process of mounting the rack and panel. Many helpful installation tips were shared and the workshop was considered informative and engaging by the participants. SEEDS provided baked goods and an atmosphere for friends to begin to collaborate. A couple of folks were offering their help with another’s installation in exchange for help with their own. The third and final session was a more intimate discussion among the attendees who were most interested in making a DIY Solar Installation kit purchase. Martin addressed individual questions, and talked about the future of solar. In his opinion, the current technology and This is a part of the racking rail that is secured into efficiency in solar panels will the roof. The solar panels are later mounted onto not be outdated for years to these rails. come.

It was emphasized that the decision to install solar is very much a financial one, and the return on the investment of the outlay of money for solar power was reviewed. Martin explained SEEDS could help those ready to purchase now by shopping for the group’s total number of panels. Each kit contains 14 panels. Six people signed up to purchase kits now, for a total of 84 panels. Martin can shop for the larger number of panels and get more competitive pricing than someone buying 14 panels on their own. This group of 6 will join an online forum to communicate with each other throughout the installation process, sharing advice and helpful hints. Six other participants, who were not quite ready to order now, already signed up for a potential second round of orders scheduled for early fall. It was an exciting and successful workshop that provided not only a group rate purchase price opportunity, but also provided group support and camaraderie. More Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels on homes in our area helps promote renewable energy here, and helps homeowners with their energy costs. SEEDS hopes to continue to offer this workshop every year, or twice a year, if there is enough demand. SEEDS will also be making training videos, and improving our workshops based on feedback from those who attended. SEEDS thanks all who attended, Martin Young for the time

Ed Gavalla smiles as he reminisces about his long experience in the nursery agribusiness at his new nursery site in Pond Eddy.

Jesse G’s Nursery in Pond Eddy:

d Gavalla moved his wholesale agricultural business specializing in fully grown trees and ornamental shrubbery to Pond Eddy two years ago, although he’s been in the nursery field much longer. After house renovations, he’s also going to live on the site bordering on the Delaware River. He runs the firm with his son and business namesake Jesse of nearby Eldred. “I’ve been in this business for 35 years,” he reminisced. “First in Montague, NJ, then in Glen Spey in nursery and landscaping and now here.” Gavalla has been living in Sullivan County since 1991. Starting from the greenhouse and garden center back in Montague, Jesse G’s nursery and landscape business has grown to service both local needs and also residents in the tri-

They also

employ several local people full time year-round and more during the summer on apart time basis, mostly high school and college students. Apart from supplying trees and shrubs, the company’s services also include landscaping and design: fences, stonework, fireplaces, “hardscapes” and many more.

“We are establishing a niche,” Ed explained at his nursery full of trees and surrounded by woods. “We can’t compete with the corporate stores.” He added: “I came across the ‘PotIn-Pot’ nursery system of planting while touring nurseries in New Jersey and Virginia. They were using this new technique. Basically, you plant a tree in a pot within a larger pot and when the time comes to sell, you just pull the pot out, instead of the traditional balling and burlap.” Last year, Ed also took a course run by the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management at Sullivan County BOCES and Community College, entitled “Economic Development in Agribusiness and Microenterprise” to encourage business in Sullivan County.

“It was the best thing I ever did!” Ed exclaimed. “It included marketing, research, development, accounting, everything, in three different sections over several weeks. We learned about different types of marketing. It was very business-oriented.” Gardening is all about the seasons, and during our visit to the Tuthill Road site off of Route 97 that runs alongside the river, Ed explained the site has irrigation utilizing a drip system, but it was not yet set up for the season. Eventually, the watering pipes are going to be attached to the trees from the pond on the side of the property. Gavalla walked around proudly showing off his trees, many in spring blossom, including Flowering DogCONTRIBUTED PHOTOS
