Livingston Manor graduates 35 STORY AND PHOTOS BY JEANNE SAGER
LIVINGSTON MANOR — It could be said that graduations are a magical time – for the graduates, their families,

and the school staff that helped get them there. But at Livingston Manor Central School, folks took it literally this year. In a test of seeing is believing, Principal Sandra Johnson sent Band Director Dan Smith to a spot front and center in the gymnasium, then asked a group of pre-selected seniors to use just two fingers each to lift their soonto-be former teacher into the air. It didn't work. But then she asked again, and suddenly Smith was letting out an “ohhhh,” as the same kids put forth the same effort to hoist him high into the air. “If one believes they can accomplish something with the help of others... they will," Johnson said, bidding students to “please remember this event.” Then came Salutatorian Jeremy Johaneman's magic tricks. Asking junior prom
king and graduation attendant – Evan Madison – to come to the front of the audience, Johaneman pulled out a fresh deck of cards. Asking Madison to fan them out, Johaneman spoke of the ace of spades, the card that to him represents the culmination of a high school career. Aces are, after all, the most valuable in a deck. And as he explained, the spade represents a shovel. “Our years attending Livingston Manor was our shovel. We used our shovel to build a foundation,” he noted. It's a foundation that Valedictorian Khristopher DiBartolo said he'll never forget. Asked what he'll miss most about LMCS, he spoke simply and from the heart. “Good friends and great teachers.” That's what magic is made of.
