Liberty, Monticello Farmers Markets combat food deserts BY NICOLE PERILLO The Monticello and Liberty Farmers’ Markets are both located in communities that are considered “food deserts.” An area is dubbed a food desert when residents don’t live near supermarkets that carry nutritious and affordable food. This results in lower-income residents and those who lack transportation to rely on smaller neighborhood stores, such as convenience stores, for their grocery shopping needs. Some public policies increase access to affordable and nutritious food as well as promote healthier choices amongst residents and provide a better supply of those options. Smaller grocery stores and conven-

‘An area is dubbed a food desert when residents don’t live near supermarkets that carry nutritious and affordable food.’ ience stores may offer healthy foods, but usually at much higher prices than supermarkets. The higher prices at these food retailers only intensify the problem of limited access to healthy foods. In realizing this, it becomes clear that farmers markets are a great solution to this problem. Both Monticello and Liberty’s

Farmers’ Markets are operated by Catskill Mountainkeeper. Their collaboration with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE), Sullivan County Public Health and the Sullivan County Division of Planning and Environmental Management is an attempt to increase access to these markets and provide educational information on nutrition. CCE works to provide cooking demos and nutrition education at their Eat Smart NY and Catskills Kitchen Food Business Incubator programs. They also provide recipes and fun fruit and vegetable highlights on their Facebook page and blog. “Liberty and Monticello are critically important urban areas in Sullivan County,” says Kelly Graham of

Catskills Mountainkeeper. “Having the prosperous and abundant farmers' markets in each of these places is the right thing to do. There's great food, great people, and we are really proud of the markets.” The Monticello Market has always accepted benefits including SNAP, WIC FMNP and Senior FMNP. According to Graham, once the Liberty Market started allowing benefits there as well there was a definite increase in customers. More vendors are to be expected at both markets this year than in previous years. For the Monticello Market specifically, Catskill Mountainkeeper is expecting an increase in customers due to the new location in Joe’s Park off of Broadway (next to Soy Asian Cuisine).
