main courses on main by Joseph Abraham here’s tons of excitement in the Village of Jeffersonville with a number of new businesses revitalizing the community. Tavern on Main, a restaurant owned by Lauren Seikaly and Michael Huber, located conveniently on Main Street, is one such business. The husband-and-wife team of Huber and Seikaly live and work in New York City but fell in love with Jeffersonville’s small-town pace and people after purchasing a second home there. Jeff provides the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, and now Huber and Seikaly have become immersed in the local community. Tavern on Main Chef John Nichols is originally from Long Island, but has lived in Sullivan County for 17 years. Nichols has cooking in his blood as it was also a passion of both his father and grandfather. He has over 40 years of restaurant experience, including in many five-star restaurants in New York City and the surrounding area. Some of the favorites on the menu include John’s Buttermilk Fried Chicken, as well as the root beer BBQ-glazed sticky ribs, Thai pan-seared scallops, roasted beets and pork belly salad, mac and cheese, and last but not least the Tavern

Burger. Tasty vegetarian options on the menu include the roasted Vegetable Couscous and a Veggie Burger. Chef Nichols also has vegetarian specials every day. Tavern on Main's everyday goal is to be something that every small town needs – a warm, inviting place for the community to gather and see each other and reunite and share ideas. It has a diverse and healthy menu and offers a good wine list and a fun bar with great beers on tap where you could grab a burger and watch the game. And, of course, Tavern on Main has a very friendly staff.

Make sure to try Tavern on Main’s Beaverkill Trout with fingerling potatoes and seasonal local vegetables.

TAVERN ON MAIN 4919 NY-52, Jeffersonville, NY 12748 (845) 482-2380 Tavernonmainny.com Hours: Wed-Thurs 11 a.m.- 9 p.m.; Fri-Sat 11 a.m.- 10 p.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. After enjoying a great meal, you don’t have to go home yet, the taproom stays open one hour after the kitchen closes. Also on the premises, Huber and Seikaly own Sprinkles, an ice cream shop open in the summer and 52 & Vine, a year-round liquor store with many great selections. They also run a seasonal beer garden in the back yard of Tavern. It's called Winkelried Biergarten and they’re open during the summer and fall months and for special occasions like St. Patrick's Day. The name Winkelried was actually the original name for the Village of Jeffersonville. More info about the beer garden can be found on www.facebook.com/WinkelriedNY/.

The restaurant showcases local history. The building itself has been around for more than 100 years, once the Union Hotel, Jefferson Hotel, Salina’s and Mullally’s Pub. The back of the bar is the original piece from sometime around the 20s or 30s. The top of the bar is made from 100-year-old wood planks found on the floor of the attic. The bottom of the bar is the same one the Mullally’s Pub used. The dining tables are made from the wood of the old Jacob Epstein Law Office across the street. And a lot of items on the walls are old things Seikaly collected from the area or discovered in the attic of the Epstein building.

“In this way, when you come into the Tavern, you may not be conscious of it, but you are sitting among history, old souls,” Seikaly said. “The older residents of Jeff get it immediately, and I think it gives us all something to connect to and in turn connects us all to each other.” When getting the restaurant ready to open, Seikaly jokes that she had the theme song of popular television series “Cheers” stuck in her head. Since opening, Tavern on Main has succeeded in creating an environment that’ll make you feel at home, appealing to all visitors, whether you’re a local or just stopping through.

It still might be a little chilly at the start of spring, so warm up with Tavern on Main’s Chicken Corn Chowder Soup.

This tasty chicken breast with whipped potatoes, seasonal vegetables and roasted shallots is one of several great dishes on the menu. C AT S K I L L S C O N F I D E N T I A L 23
