Bringing Communities Together Through Business Connections Publisher’s Message Thank you for your interest and support of The Southern California Black Business Expo Directory. We are a unique, purpose driven and action-oriented business. We pride ourselves in knowing that we are continually growing, evolving and advancing our message of support in the Black community. Focusing on businesses, leadership, community involvement, youth mentoring and education are our primary goals. While I appreciate the fact that many small business owners and entrepreneurs may need to jump start their businesses, let’s remember that the quality of our products and services must be superior to the current competition in the marketplace. The success of Black businesses will be based upon the ever increasing spending power and contributions of the Black community. As Publisher of The Southern California Black Business Expo Directory, my objective is to use this vehicle as a resource for inclusion and collaboration between all Black business owners. We are here to support all Black businesses, organizations and individuals regardless of revenue results or number of employees. I want to thank those of you who have worked tirelessly for many years in our communities. Your commitment and contributions are greatly appreciated. In addition, thank you for your suggestions, recommendations and on-going support of The Southern California Black Business Expo Directory. LinkedIn: Part 1 of 4 “Knowing Your Numbers” By now you’ve had the opportunity to look around and try to create a credible profile on LinkedIn. Or have you? Most individuals are so consumed with the rapid fire succession of posts, likes, and inspirational enlightenment mixed with a portion of online cat-fights from Facebook that they’ve yet taken the time to understand LinkedIn and all its potential. Let’s look at it like this: if you want to watch a basChristopher S. Dennis ketball game you can visit any park in America and find a game to watch. The quality of what you see on the court would be semi watchable on a good day. However, if you want to watch a quality production you should probably watch an NBA game. What’s the point? I’m glad you asked! As a business you shouldn’t be placing all of your efforts in a pick-up game on Facebook. You should be where the professionals are and that’s on LinkedIn. By and large LinkedIn boasts a more mature and affluent audience. According to a data analysis by Quantcast.com, 26% of LinkedIn users are between the ages of 18-34, while 70% are aged 35-49 and 50+. If that doesn’t get you thinking, 75% of LinkedIn users are college educated with 29% making over $60k a year, while 39% are making over $100k

per year. Do you get it yet? Your friends are on Facebook, but your customers are on LinkedIn! Statistically if you are employable or in business for yourself the best place for you to spend your time would be on a network such as LinkedIn, but for all of the traditional reasons African-Americans are underrepresented on the site compared to the averages of African-American internet users. So what should you do? I invite you to go where the professionals are making an impact. Update your LinkedIn photo, join a few groups, and write your profile in first person perspective. These three things will increase your visibility in your current market by not appearing to be a sleeping resume. Engage and interact, because your professional life depends on it! Christopher S. Dennis is the Principal Consultant with GAB Brands, LLC in Moreno Valley, CA. He also serves as the Regional Manager of A Better Chance, INC as well as the Inland Empire Coordinator of the National Black MBA Association Los Angeles Chapter (LABMBAA). For more information visit www.christophersdennis.com.

What is AVID & How Could It Help Your Child? Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID), is a college readiness system for elementary through secondary education that was developed by Mary Catherine Swanson in 1980 in San Diego CA. The program is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change. The AVID Elective includes development of study skills, tutoring in collaborative study groups, and a curriculum focused on reading and writing for learning. Training strands are offered for administrators, counselors, AVID Elective teachers, tutors, and teachers of English, history, mathematics, science, and world languages. School wide site teams meet to discuss the teaching practices that are most helpful for student learning. Participating teachers design lessons around the methodologies, share them, pilot them, and refine them for school wide use. Teachers visit the AVID class to see the practices in action and AVID tutors are sent school wide to assist subject area teachers in utilizing the methods. By 1986 AVID was incorporated into all secondary schools in San Diego County. In 1989, Ramona High School in Riverside became the first school outside of San Diego County to adopt the program, which is now adopted worldwide. This successful program is integral to the successful acceptance into universities and colleges of thousands of low-income/at risk students annually. However, many student athletes are left out of the equation due to a propensity for taking classes that will insure a grade point average that will enable them to remain eligible to participate on sports teams and ineligible for college entrance. There is no reason why schools, with careful forethought and planning cannot support student-athletes in the AVID program. Moreno Valley Unified School District has developed an AVID strand for athletes. Other Inland Empire school districts should be encouraged to do the same.

Why Upward Bound & How It Prepares Our Youth? The Upward Bound Program has a rich history dating back to 1964 and continues to open the door of opportunity and access to higher education for eligible students across the country regardless of race, ethnicity or culture. The Moreno Valley College Upward Bound Math & Science Program is a federally funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The Upward Bound Math & Science Program (UBMS) is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and to encourage them to pursue post secondary degrees in math and science and ultimately careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM).

UBMS can help you prepare for college and a career in STEM...and here is why it matters: * STEM-related careers make up one of the fastest-growing segments of the 21st century marketplace * According to a report entitled "STEM: Good Jobs Now and for the Future," released in July 2011, workers in the so-called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) occupations earn 26 percent more than workers in other fields * STEM workers of all educational levels earn more than their non-STEM peers * By 2018, STEM occupations will account for about 8.6 million jobs The advantage of student participation: * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
