WELCOME

A

WELCOME!

very warm festive welcome to the Winter issue of The Scallymag - packed full of Christmas cheer!

This issue is always very special for The Scallymag team as it’s our opportunity to give back to the community that we serve. A percentage of all profits raised from advertising revenue will go towards supporting our Charity for 2014, Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice. We’ll be catching up with our friends at the hospice on page seven and helping them launch their ‘Wish Upon Yor Star’ campaign. Shabang will be telling us about their 2015 calendar featuring chaildren with additional needs, sales of which will also help the hospice. There’s fantastic news from the Donate for Daisy campaign and I’d like to join Daisy’s parents in thanking all of our readers who helped to raise such an amazing sum for Birmingham Children’s Hospital - what a fabulous effort from you all! With Christmas holidays fast approaching, we go out and about at Stockeld Park, get crafty with Christmas cards and making Olaf from ‘Frozen’, catch up with The Hey Diddles and fairandfunky show us how to have a Fairtrade Christmas. We’ll be back in March. Until then, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

NEWS £20,000 RAISED!

A

Huddersfield couple who lost their baby daughter to a rare heart condition have raised more than £20,000 for the hospital that cared for her.

Helen Gardner and her partner, Aaron Dawes, of Almondbury organised a whole host of fundraising events across the district this Summer to commemorate Daisy Leigh’s short life. Events included fun days, charity walks, fashion shows, games nights and first aid courses which raised a grand total of £20,191.45. Daisy died at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, just 22-days-old, having undergone major surgery. Helen said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support and generosity from people in our community and we were so proud to be handing over a cheque for so much money (double the amount we were hoping to raise!) in memory of Daisy.”

SHABANG’S 2015 CALENDAR

S

habang Inclusive Learning has released its 2015 calendar featuring children with additional needs.

Based at The Watershed, Slaithwaite, Shabang works with families through Lottery funded theatre and arts projects. The calendar entitled ‘What a Wonderful World’, seeks to celebrate the diversity of the children it routinely works with and includes 12 beautiful pictures of youngsters in the great outdoors. Each page also features Makaton signs and symbols to help children with communication needs and teach others about this unique signing system. “We believe in celebrating our children and young people with additional needs” said Shabang. “Not only does the calendar help to raise awareness but it promotes inclusion, understanding and acceptance in a fun and accessible way “ In September, Shabang won a coveted National Diversity Award for Community Organisation Disability. The profits from the calendar will be split between Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice and Martin House, both of which have helped Shabang families this year. Calendars can be bought from Shabang’s online shop at www. shabang.org.uk and cost £9.99.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS COME TO TOWN

A

t this time of year The Scallymag gets inundated with details of Christmas fairs and markets and while we would love to include each and every one of them in our Winter issue, we can’t realistically fit them all in. So, here are a few of our favourites:

Cathedral House at St Thomas Road, Huddersfield will be transformed into a Winter Wonderland Christmas Fair and Market on Saturday December 6. The event, which is open from 10am to 4 pm will include Santa in his grotto, an opportunity to feed Rudolph, live music, festive foods, market stalls, carol singing, games, circus entertainment, a bouncy castle and face painting.

Also on December 6 from 10am to 12.30pm, Rastrick Library will be holding a Christmas Craft Fair. Organised by the Friends of Rastrick Library, the event at Crowtrees Lane, Rastrick, Brighouse, will include a range of stalls selling bespoke, handmade craft items ideal for those hard to buy for friends and relatives. There will also be Christmas craft activities for children, seasonal refreshments and a raffle. Colne Valley Museum at Cliffe Ash, Golcar, Huddersfield will be hosting a traditional Victorian Christmas Fair on the weekends of December 6 and 7 and December 13 and 14. The fair, open from 1pm to 4pm each day, promises lots of family fun, games, mince pies as well as Santa sitting in front of his fire. Admission to the fair is free.

OUT & ABOUT he Christmas Adventure at Stockeld Park offers a world of Winter fun practically on your doorstep.

T

If you’re feeling really energetic, why not have a go at the Nordic Ski Trail – an artificial cross country ski course through the Enchanted Forest. I must admit, we did give this a definite miss on our last visit!

Okay, so we can’t promise snowcapped mountains or a beautiful Narniaesque white wood. But if Lapland is just a bit too far, a bit too cold and a bit too pricey, then the Christmas Adventure offers a very good alternative.

There is a Christmas shop at Stockeld Park selling all kinds of festive decorations, gifts and lights. You’re even able to buy a freshly pruned Christmas tree grown on the estate itself…that is if you have room with a car full of kids…

Open until January 6, little ones will love the Enchanted Forest - a 1.2km trail through ancient woodland featuring special illuminated characters and animals to spot along the way.

The Woodland Café serves a varied menu of homemade dishes using locally sourced produce.

It combines traditional fairytale and classic stories with the magic of Christmas and in amongst the illuminated figures, children can enjoy the playground areas: Tangle Tree Climb, Tepee Encampment, Woodsands Cove and Dragon Swing. The illuminated Yew Tree Maze, with 8ft high walls is also a great place for young explorers and adventurers. For children over the age of four, there is an ice-skating rink but be sure to wrap up warm with gloves and thick socks for extra comfort. Children’s skates are adjustable and are available in sizes eight to 13. Those not yet confident on the ice can use a skating penguin to steady themselves. These aids are available in 30 minute slots on a first come first served basis for £2.

No Christmas Adventure would be complete without a visit to Santa’s Grotto. Since we were last there, the park has introduced a new digital queue management system, so that you can avoid having to wait in line with little ones. Instead you can keep an eye out for your turn on the screens situated around the site. Santa will be hosting a Christmas party at Stockeld Park on Wednesday December 10 at 10.30am and 1pm. The event is pre-bookable and for £13 includes songs, games, lunch and a gift. For full details of opening times, special events and prices, please visit the Stockeld Park website. By Elaine Jinks

Crafty Kids!

C

hristmas is probably the best time of year to be crafty, as there are so many projects to make for kids and adults alike, most of which involve lots of glitter! Here, Alison Lester of The Rose Garden demonstrates a really simple and quick way of making your own Christmas cards.

Glitter Christmas Cards You will need: Some white card (or card blanks) Glittery card or paper Glue Scissors Black fine liner pen Ruler Something round to draw around

Method: 1. You can make your own card background by cutting and folding some plain white card to size, or use card blanks which are widely available in craft shops.

want to use to decorate your card, and find something appropriately sized to draw around.

3. On the reverse of your glitter card draw a circle using your round template, and cut out carefully using the scissors. 4. Arrange your baubles on the card, and glue in place. 5. Using a fine liner pen and a ruler you can then draw the top of each bauble in place and the string holding them up. 6. With your best handwriting write a Christmas greeting on the bottom or inside of your card. 7. If you are feeling adventurous you can use a range of shapes such as holly, trees, stars or snowflakes. Top Tip: Cut your baubles from last year’s Christmas Cards, as they usually have lots of nice sparkly glitter bits on them. Try this: Make matching gift tags by scaling down the size of you card The Rose Garden is a small business based in Brighouse and specializes in homemade crafts, bunting, jewellery and gifts.

2. Decide on the size of the baubles you

SCRAPtastic Recycling with fairandfunky Make your own Olaf! fairandfunky love to recycle and like many others we also love Frozen! Add the two together and this is what you can create your very own Olaf.

You will need: Scissors Glue A toilet roll Some white paper A pen Scraps of black fabric or paper, And a little bit of orange for the nose!

6

Simply cover the toilet roll with glue and wrap the paper (ideally scrap paper!) around it. Add 3 black buttons, tufts of hair, stick arms, and eyes cut from scrap fabric. Next cut a triangle of orange for his carroty nose – glue this tight – we all know Olaf’s nose likes to fall off! Finally take a pen and draw Olaf’s toothy grin and eyebrows to make him come alive! You can either hang him on your tree or glue him to a piece of scrap card (use a cereal box) covered in snow (scrap paper or felt) so he can hold your pens and pencils.

Happy Christmas Crafting!

FORGET ME NOT CHILDREN’s HOSPICE

F

‘WISH UPON YOUR STAR’ AND MAKE CHILDREN’S DREAMS COME TRUE

orget Me Not Children’s Hospice, our Charity for 2014, has launched its Christmas campaign – ‘Wish Upon Your Star’ and would like people across Kirklees to lend their support.

For children with life limiting illnesses and their families, it is most often the simple things that can make all the difference. Bethanie, just one of the children that the hospice helps to care for, wants nothing more than a magical Christmas with her family. One of the ways you can help make that happen is by holding a Mince Pie Munch – a Christmas get-together with family or friends at home or at work. It’s a great opportunity to catch up, have a cuppa and a mince pie and raise some much needed funds for a wonderful cause. Posters, flyers, invitations and even printable bunting to decorate your Mince Pie Munch venue are all available at the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice

website. There is a whole host of other ways in which you could support the campaign including buying the charity’s Christmas cards, doing your Christmas shopping at one of the hospice’s 10 stores or simply by donating online. Businesses and community groups have organised a series of events

throughout December which will raise funds for the hospice – take a look at our list and pop along to your nearest one! The Scallymag is helping to support the Wish Upon Your Star campaign by donating a percentage of all profits raised from advertising revenue in this Winter issue to the hospice.

These diary pages are the heart of The Scallymag; the main reason the magazine exists and probably the most useful part for parents and carers. We aim to list as many activities for 0-5 year olds in the area. We do our best to ensure the information is up-to-date (there will probably be some changes every issue). However we are not infallible. If you know of any changes, or of any new groups or courses that should be included, please get in touch by using any of the contact details on page 3. Listing in this section is FREE.

FOCUS ON family law CHANGES TO CONTACT AND RESIDENCE ORDERS – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

A

lthough it is hoped that parents will never need to attend court regarding issues relating to their children, it is nevertheless important that all parents are aware of the recent changes to Contact and Residence Orders.

This year, these Orders were replaced by the newly entitled ‘Child Arrangements Orders’. At the centre of a Child Arrangement Order, is when a child (or children) will spend time with each parent and the quality of that time. The main purpose is that the Order should be suited to each particular child’s needs. The terms ‘Residence’ and ‘Contact’ are often viewed as inflammatory, particularly in the context of an already difficult situation when parents separate. Removing these terms will mean less conflict and less of a focus on who has residence and who has contact and instead, a focus on the arrangements for that child. The ethos behind the change is reducing acrimony and making the

whole process less confrontational. The amendment is in line with further changes to the court, such as reiterating the need for parents to attend mediation and encouraging them to reach an agreement between themselves before resorting to court action. The courts wish to see that parents view court proceedings as a last resort and wish to ensure that all other avenues are exhausted before taking such a step. In some circumstances, for example when parents cannot agree, or where there are welfare issues and urgent action is required, taking the matter to court will still be necessary and parents will not have to attend mediation first. The new Child Arrangements Orders still allow for the same protection as the old style Residence or Contact Orders, in that failure to comply can result in a fine, an order for unpaid work or, ultimately a term of imprisonment. Orders prohibiting certain actions and those relating to specific issues (such as where a child will attend school) remain unchanged. If you have any questions about how this may relate to you or your children you should contact a solicitor. We at Barnes Family Law offer free advice sessions, simply reference The

HEALTHY EATING FOR ST THOMAS’ PUPILS

T

he Huddersfield Town Foundation – the official registered charity of Huddersfield Town – has helped to kick-start a new healthy eating initiative at St Thomas’ Church of England Primary School.

Pupils at the school in Bradley can now stock up on nutritious fresh fruit and vegetables during break time at the Half-Time Hunger Hut. It was officially opened by Town’s club ambassador, Andy Booth and headteacher, David Rushby. The Hut has been painted the famous blue and white colours of Huddersfield Town by club partner, PPG Industries. The Town Foundation’s Mandy Taylor said: “It is brilliant to see the charity

12

supporting a new initiative with an existing school partner of Huddersfield Town. “When we initially met some time ago to discuss our successful Early Kick-Off Breakfast Club scheme, it soon became apparent that the school was already running a well-attended club. “However, the passion and pride of the headteacher, David Rushby, shone through on the day and it was imperative that we explored any other avenues of support that we could offer.” The Town Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of children and young people in the community, will fund the cost of the fresh fruit and vegetables that the Half-Time Hunger Hut will serve.

Fairtrade Your Christmas!

t fairandfunky we empower people to take their own little steps to change the world – through workshops, community events and more!

Each and every one of us has the power to make a positive difference on the world around us – locally and globally, and with Christmas just around the corner, shopping is a good place to start.

Fairtrade is one of the ways in which each and every one of us can change the world. The Fairtrade Mark guarantees a fair price for the people behind the product. When you buy a Fairtrade product you are having a direct positive impact on the lives of the producers and their families: from vanilla farmers in Madagascar, to cotton farmers in India; from wine growers in Chile to cocoa farmers in Ghana.

Fairtrade transforms communities in the poorest parts of the world. From empowering women to creating democratic processes within the workplace; from training and education to producers becoming stakeholders within the supply chain. It’s incredible to think that our simple act of shopping, can have such a powerful impact to producers. A product can only carry the Fairtrade label and be called Fairtrade if it has been certified by the Fairtrade Foundation. But your change the world shopping doesn’t have to stop with Fairtrade, there are many fairly traded gifts and toys available in small independent retailers that haven’t yet been Fairtrade certified. As you do your Christmas shopping this year try and take the time to ask where the products have come from and who made them – if the retailers can tell you then it’s probably fairly traded. Buying fairly traded gifts means you are buying something handmade, not mass produced and that the person behind the product is paid a fair price.

F

airandfunky, comprising Helen Robinson and Sophie Bebb, are set to host the very first Fairtrade Conference for Schools in Kirklees.

The event will take place during Fairtrade Fortnight on March 6 at the Creative and Media Studio, Huddersfield. It will bring together primary schools from across the district to celebrate and learn about Fairtrade through creative arts and education workshops for pupils and teachers. Four different workshops will be on offer which will focus on recycling, Fairtrade producers, music and mapping Fairtrade food and producers around the world. The Scallymag is very proud to be sponsoring the very first Fairtrade Conference for Schools.

The Fairtrade Mark shows that we are all connected: the green represents the earth, the blue represents the sea and sky; and the black represents a person standing tall. We all have our part to play in making the world a fair place.

Twenty years ago you could buy 3 Fairtrade products. You could have a cup of Fairtrade tea, or coffee. And you could have a bar of chocolate. Today you can choose from over 4,500 products: from soap to cotton bags, from coffee to olive oil and much more. This Christmas you could change the world: shop local, think global. Buy Fairtrade. fairandfunky is a community interest company based in Holmfirth delivering creative workshops to schools and community groups on Fairtrade, recycling and the environment. fairandfunky also sell a range of Fairtrade and ethical products at www.fairandfunky.com and at a pop-up shop near you!

Entertainment HAVE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS WITH THE HEY DIDDLES

A

s Father Christmas starts loading his sleigh with presents, the Hey Diddles are also busy preparing for Christmas.

The talented trio are delighted to be performing four shows this festive season across Kirklees, in Moldgreen, Holmfirth and Brighouse. For those of you who haven’t yet heard of them, the Hey Diddles are an interactive children’s entertainment group. Performing a one hour show full of songs, stories and dances loved by pre-school children everywhere, the show is especially for children under the age of six. Think The Wiggles crossed with Justin’s House and you’ll be on the right track! The Hey Diddles comprises of Lisa, Sally and Zoe, three mums from Holmfirth, who have spent years treading the boards and who recognised a gap in the market for very young children. Lisa said: “I direct the local pantomime and I realised that people don’t bring their very little children to watch, for fear of them being disruptive, not understanding the plot, needing the loo etc. “The Hey Diddles show is especially for the little ones, telling a simple story based around all their favourite action songs and nursery rhymes.” Now into their third year, the Hey Diddles are going from strength to strength with clients including the Coal Mining Museum, Holmfirth Vineyard and Yorkshire Water. Their Christmas Shows are at Moldgreen United Reform Church on Saturday December 13 at 2pm, Holmfirth Civic Hall on Sunday December 21 at 2pm and 4pm and at Brighouse Civic Hall on Tuesday December 23 at 2pm.

Headteacher, Jack Williams, said: “The children will spend the afternoon at our school with warm-ups, singing in rounds and in different languages, practising some choral pieces and learning techniques and what it is like to sing in a cathedral choir.” Participants will then have the opportunity to perform for their parents at the cathedral.

Tickets cost £5 for children, £4 for adults and those under 18-months-old are free. To book, telephone 01484 222444.

‘ Children’s FESTIVE Reads

‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house…’ Yes, it’s that time of year again, settle down with a festive read on Christmas Eve or consider one of these as a lovely stocking filler. Our friends at The Children’s Bookshop, Lindley, have picked some of their favourite festive books to share with you. And Then Comes Christmas By Tom Brenner (£11.99) ‘And Then Comes Christmas’ is the perfect introduction for 2- 4 year olds. Starting in Autumn, through frosts to snow, it covers Christmas decorations, Santa in the shops, hiding presents, food, carols and finally Christmas morning. This could be a substitute for an Advent calendar.

A Year of Stories and Things To Do By Shirley Hughes (£19.99) Another sizeable collection is ‘A Year of Stories and Things to Do’ which harks back to an earlier age when stories were seasonal. Compiled and illustrated by Shirley Hughes, this is a wonderful selection to be enjoyed throughout the year.

The Nights Before Christmas By Tony Ross (£19.99) In ‘The Nights Before Christmas’, Tony Ross has collected 24 wonderful Christmas stories, from the sadness of ‘The Little Match Girl’, through to lesser known fables such as ‘Why the Evergreen Trees Never Lose Their Leaves’, to old favourites such as extracts from ‘A Christmas Carol’, ‘Wind in the Willows’ and different versions of the Nativity. It is a book for all the family to share and feels really up to date with Tony Ross’s energetic illustrations.

The Magic Faraway Tree By Enid Blyton (£14.99) Enid Blyton needs no introduction and at last the publishers have given ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ the quality production it deserves. This substantial hardback with copious colour illustrations will make the perfect gift for primary school age children and a trip down memory lane for their parents.

Paddington and the Christmas Surprise By Michael Bond (£6.99) No apologies for mentioning Paddington. The film, released in late November, will spark enormous interest. It can be tricky, as the original Paddington Bear stories are quite wordy and just have line drawings, whereas the mass appeal, we find, is to younger children delighted by Paddington’s antics. To cover this age group and interest, ‘Paddington and the Christmas Surprise’ describes his visit to Santa’s Grotto in a large store and the subsequent havoc he creates. Another good pre-Christmas read. The Paddington Treasury for the Very Young By Michael Bond (£14.99) For the definitive present on Christmas day, consider ‘The Paddington Treasury for the Very Young’ which is very good value as it includes six of the classic bedtime stories about this redoubtable bear.

Father Christmas By Raymond Briggs (£7.99) ‘Father Christmas’ is showing at West Yorkshire Playhouse until January. To reinforce a visit to the theatre it is really helpful to have the book in advance to enhance the experience. ‘Father Christmas’ by Raymond Briggs is out now in a substantial paperback edition to commemorate 40 years since the original publication. Santa is Coming to Huddersfield By Steve Smallman (£4.99) Finally ‘Santa is Coming to Huddersfield’ has much local interest with mentions of Bradley, Birkby and Castle Hill. It has actually been written by a very good picture book writer and makes a fun present for locals and ex-Huddersfield families alike.
