Scaffold & Lace’s vibrant jewellery expresses architectural ideas in miniature. Drawing inspiration from vastly different landscapes and cityscapes, the jewellery builds on the cross-cultural appeal of abstract forms and geometry.
Owner Shaumyika Sharma says “colour makes me happy. Living as an architect in the fashion capitals of London and New York, I was never quite satisfied with the architectural tendency to wear headto-toe black. We all develop a visual language during our formative years. My visual vocabulary was informed by the shimmering beaches of Australia where I grew up, and the rich textile and jewellery traditions of my native India, where colour and individual identity are closely linked. As a student, I subscribed to the Bauhaus ‘total art’ ideal, which enabled me to assimilate arts and crafts traditions into contemporary architectural forms. Using digital fabrication techniques acquired through physical model-making processes, I have created go-everywhere pieces to fit with a wayfaring lifestyle.”
With over 14 years experience in architecture, design and art, Shaumyika Sharma holds a Master’s from Columbia University (Advanced Architectural Design), a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Western Australia, and completed her architectural registration at The Bartlett, UCL, London. In 2012, she established her multi-disciplinary design studio in Singapore, Studio Shaumyika Sharma, and the design product line, Scaffold & Lace.
UNDERWATER FREEDOM S/S 17 Immersion in a body of water is associated with both ritual and pleasure. In the realm of pleasure, it evokes a sense of physical freedom. Architecture – a form of creative freedom - brings geometry into nature. The Underwater Freedom collection symbolizes this idea with the octagon and the octopus – thought to be one of the most resilient creatures of the sea. The use of abstract wave motifs completes a kind of geometric ‘octopus’s garden’.

ANCIENT WISDOM RESORT 17 The Ancient Wisdom collection was inspired by the texture of a date palm, a tree sometimes associated with resort locations, but also found amidst some of the most ancient ruins in the world. In keeping with the juxtaposition of modernity with timelessness, the date palm motif is digitally fabricated, but cast in metals that have been used since antiquity – silver, bronze and brass.

WINTER KINGDOM A/W 17/18 Snow, ski slopes and spruce trees inform both the colour palette and geometries of the Winter Kingdom collection. Greens and whites derived from wintry landscapes, are contrasted against silver, bronze and brass. An abstracted spruce tree resembles a ‘sawtooth roof’ silhouette, the main motif of this collection.
